- Two voice actors say they were hired by the AI company Lovo to provide voice clips for what they were told would be internal research. They claim the company instead cloned their voices, breaching their contracts. The actors are suing Lovo in a proposed federal class action lawsuit.

I’m a voice actor and I’ve had so many companies say the same thing to me claiming “Internal research”. Always say no. Could be a losing battle but I’m not going without a fight.
Yes, I too have seen auditions and jobs here and there from AI companies. I always say no.
This. I am sure in the fine print this was likely made clear. People would be naive to think they wouldnt use it for this.
From a legal standpoint, internal research may include breaking down your voice and learning how your vocals work. It does not include generating a new voice in imitation of yours and then using that voice for front facing work. They not only have a case, but if this company is smart they will settle immediately.
so i guess voices?? have a copy right now???? voice actors?? copy famous voices all the time. do you think this opens the door for you to be sued for just sounding like some one else?? maybe your name should be copy righted to.. how bout artist sue becuase they are "copying" a color or your color? maybe every word . spoken should cost 1 billion for copy rights??? plus another one billion per letter. so ive "stolen " and even the space bar is on billion so 1 billion per word. on billion per character 1 billion per letter. and now also the sound eacch letter makes plus the sound it make when letters combined.. ( unless it a word or letter not ever have meen created by some one or some group... so now i gues justr responding to you.... as a voice actor( acting/pretending/ changing/ mimicing) sound of anyones voice.. you open to many laws suits too!.. so 100,000,000,000,000 becuase of "damages" so many people have seen even this comment??? 6500 views... so just by responding to you.. 100trillon. by 6500 people or 6,500,000,000,000,000,000 dollars more money then has ever existed in any economy ever!!
get over your selves... you "imitate voces" and your suing a company for doing exactly the same thing you do??? think bout that one dude? "voice actor"
should musicians start suing voice actors for "copying" imitaiting.. the notes or harmonic frequencies/ "tones" that are "theirs"... but keep thinking it thru!!
Even if you not a voice actor this has huge ramifications . It could be used to frame you in the court of law . And there's many more .
Currently, people can claim that an individual or group "said this" via trolling online. Now, not only can your voice be mimicked, so too can "DeepFake" falsify your image. And what can an individual do if THAT goes viral?! NOTHING. Even if you were to later prove it wasn't you... who cares? The damages would already be done, and they can't be fixed by any level of remuneration.
No it can't. It's the opposite. What is going to happen is that video and audio evidence will no longer be trusted. So people that commit actual crimes where there's damning evidence will say "it's AI generated". We only lived in a very, very brief point in history where audio/video evidence was a thing.
There's going to need to be a higher standard of evidence
They said this with CGI btw
Experts can tell the difference
To be honest, I'm more worried about the rich and powerful taking advantage of this to deny any wrongdoing by saying "Nah, that's not me, I've never said that, I've never been there it's all just deepfake", eroding the accountability of billionaires, bigwigs, and elected officials even further and widening the gap between the "peasants" who get jailed for relatively minor offenses and the elite who can get out of pretty much anything scot free.
This is a huge deal. If we don't protect these artists, there will not be anything new created (for AI to train on). My biggest argument is I do not want megacorporations profiting so heavily off of others work.
Sam Vaknin said two years ago in video that Ai is narcissistic because both AI and narcisists pretend empathy, steal jobs, spread misinformation.
You're so right about nothing new being created. It's already been reported in the visual arts community that AI is feeding off other AI's and the results are worse. If nothing changes it will be and endless loop of feeding and regurgitating the same information.
@@jilldlc4423 If what you're saying is true, then the problem will solve itself because the endless feeding off itself is going to lead to worse and worse quality. That's why real people are still going to have jobs.
No one will protect the individuals. Only those with coin, connections, crews, clout, computer code, control, corporate cronies, and criminal opportunities will prevail. That's just how it is. Accept it and move on.
Forget actors .. as said anyone’s voice can be cloned! Could be very much exploited.
Black Mirror’s episode of ‘Joan is Awful’ is a great representation of this new fear.
I am sad that I actually know that reference.
If you're an individual artist or content creator with few resources, you have *NO* chance against the wealthy, powerful, influential corporations. They can do whatever they wish, and that's just the way it is. Algorithms allow them to do even MORE far faster, far more often, too. They can literally destroy and bury an individual artist with one click. One algorithm, and yer DONE. 💪😎✌️ THAT is power. Ultimate power.
@@Novastar.SaberCombat it’s not even that though.
Healthcare was already a major concern before. AI is a whole different ballgame game now because they rely on checking boxes, instead of listening to a doctor’s opinion. Insurance companies can now deny coverage claims if you don’t check enough boxes.
I had a representative deny coverage because what they were asking for was not feasible in the timeframe. They basically denied coverage (don’t worry it went to peer to peer) due to the inability to allow coverage for the very things they were asking for.
Imagine a world where our healthcare system already sucks but the power of companies monopolizing AI to immediately deny coverage, WITHOUT actually hearing a medical professional.
Every case is different but AI is now becoming an excuse to deny medical coverage. Instead of a doctor to doctor consult, the case is automatically thrown out by AI.
You gotta read the terms and conditions!
WOW! This can't be possible! nobody saw this coming...just the beginning of AI taking all the JOBS! Remember how that turned-out for the humans in the movie (Wall-E)2008 film?
Its bad enough they get sidelined for "celebrity" voices in animated movies...
First they steal your info, then they steal your looks and now they will steal your voice. In the end the only thing you will have left is your memory.
Scientists: NAH, WE COMING FOR THAT TOO….RUN THEM NOSTALGIC DAYS PLAYING WITH GAM GAM AND POP POP! 😂😂😂
Imitation is not stealing.
Not a good thing to do, but don‘t overdramatise it.
-It is very artistic to say, you will only have your memory.
You still look the same way, sound the same way.
Just someone stole your likeness.-That obviously isn’t good.
@@antman7673 You don't get it. Imagine not even owning the rights to your own image.
@@antman7673 A voice is your property and there are explicit rules against commercial use without credit. It's not imitation to use a computer to use your voice to make your voice say something.
@@dadevi If I paint someone, and it turns out to be the spitting image of you, what did I do wrong? Did I violate your rights when I didn't even know you existed? AI doesn't know anyone exists, either. We're developing and will reach a point where an AI-generated voice will be completely parameterized, where the user of the AI system can create any voice they want - with 7-8 billion people in the world, virtually any voice is going to sound like someone's actual voice. Who's fault is that? Whose rights were violated if it wasn't intentional or with knowledge?
I remember when Instagram was advertising for voice acting and i just knew it was for ai tech. Blocked that sh!t so fast.
Ai companies need to be regulated. I can't believe politics haven't caught up yet. 😪
Yeah the entire world is watching it, idk why everything is so slow down there
Thats what I’m scared of, we all saw what happened on the 6th Jan🥺🫣 They (AI) can have them say anything😬 I, Robot warned us about this.

everything about a person should be considered private property unless signed away for rent.
These voice actors were paid - they signed their voices away for rent. It'll come down to whether or not their contracts were violated or whether their contracts were misleading or not. So this situation sounds like exactly what you described should happen.
@@babybirdhomethey were paid for 'internal research', yet their voice was released publicly, therefore the contract was breached which is why they're suing.
Corporations are wealthy, powerful, influential, and profitable. Individuals aren't. The individual will always be crushed by group forces. Always. Especially when they're pitted against algorithms which are running 24/7 at processing speeds you can't possibly fathom.

The bigger deal is that Ryan knew he was going on the news with that stash.
Recently I was recruited to participate in a research study that outlined the very details these two actors speak of early in this segment; that my participation would be for internal purposes and no camera would be involved. Upon indicating my initial interest in the study, which would pay $3,000 to participate, I was then sent a release form to sign, and it was for Lovo. The details of the contract were different than what they had initially outlined in their recruitment communications, with the A.I, aspect of it being revealed. I turned down the opportunity, even though I could’ve used the $3,000. The use of A.I. generated narration in RUclips videos is becoming very common, and I hate listening to it. Everyone needs to check themselves when considering using A.I. for anything because while it might make things easier and cost effective for you in the short term, in the long term you are relinquishing your own mental capabilities and all the benefits that self-expression provides to live a full existence as a human being.
Same on AI narration in YT videos. I avoid them because when I listen to them over 25-30 mins, I started to have headache(might not happen to everyone), while I can listen to the channels I know that they use real human voices and audio books voiced by real human 3 hrs long with no problem, might be strange, but true to me.
During the SAG walk-out, this was one of the things Fran Drescher was talking about, how the use of AI could take away away artist's careers across the board (their image, voice, etc.).
Yup. But it doesn't matter. Corporations will do as they wish. That's just how it is. Wealth is health; might is right. Those who control the most cutting-edge algorithms rule all.
And you don't see these same people who fought during the strikes caring now.
@@kingcrimson2643 You work in the creative industries? I'm an animator. I know artists, writers, actors, vo actors, musicians that have been working with governments around the world for 2 years, none stop to set precedent for AI and labor in general.
Fran Drescher is a hero. How much do you care about this issue since you think actors have stopped?
@Novastar.SaberCombat you sound like a broken record repeating the same thing on all the threads of this comment section. Are you a troll or a bot?
Of all people, I think her voice is one we don't want to hear more of! 🤣
That mans mustache. ... holy sh*t
It looks like a halfassed disguise lol
it's so AI can't steal his upper lip 😏
Came here for this comment. It's like a parody of someone trying to use an unconvincing fake mustache to disguise himself.
When I was in acting the contacts you would sign said that could use your likeness or voice for future projects. But the AI company is a different issue.
Have you watched the Black Mirror episode ‘Joan is awful’?
And that's why union contracts forbade this.
I thought we were entering the "you own nothing" future.
That ChatGPT voice sounds nothing like Scarlett J.
AI needs to be regulated ASAP! Legislation needs to be in place to protect the work of creatives everywhere.
For now you can simply license your voice but forbid ai use
I sure hope everyone is paying attention. Unregulated AI might be affecting acting for the moment, but it's expected to affect lots of jobs. Tech companies have openly stated AI is not a tool, it's a way to reduce labor costs. That's jobs, which could lead to mass unemployment, which could lead to the collapse of entire economies. AI must be regulated to benefit all of society, not just a section of society, business. Don't look at this as a rich person's issue or you don't like Hollywood, or it's too woke. Remember the poem, "First they came..."
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a communists.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.
That’s a good way to look at it. There are a lot of times where people will say to others that the issue is not theirs so why do they care? But small pinpoint problems end up becoming real gushers at some point. Best to stop the beast before it consumes everything.
Cry about it.
One aspect you're forgetting, you can regulate AI in one country but it has no power over another
@@killerbee1974 I mean, that's not really a new thing though. Artists have always had to deal with international piracy.
@@killerbee1974 Not really, those that don't regulate AI are going to drive their economy off the cliff. A few countries have come to this realization and are conducting studies on AI as they don't want to deal with high unemployment, political instability and economic chaos just so tech shareholders can be trillionaires. China has stronger AI laws to protect citizens than the US already.
So if you are worried other countries will "win" the AI race if your country regulates AI, don't be unless you want to be 1st to oblivion. Actually in a California state assembly hearing a couple weeks ago, this was a question, if AI is regulated to protect workers, what's to stop companies seeking tax subsidises in other states? The answer was New York already had similar laws and are fine. But the big picture answer is government self preservation.
Again, first they came...
Just imagine somebody being at a club and saying to somebody they have to leave because their voice sounds too similar to the artist under the spotlight.
thats why i dont support ai honestly. it has its place but never in replacing creativity. this company is extremely unethical and there should be federal sanctions for what they do. plus her real voice is a lot better than her ai counterpart. these "start ups" need to pay for what they do.
I've seen ads here on RUclips with AI-generated voices of Donald Trump, Megyn Kelly, Joe Rogan, Morgan Freeman, and probably a few others. Why is RUclips allowing this?
I hope it gets to a point where we report it to get it taken down.
Probably bc there is no law against it. Yet.
I wonder where the boundary is between YT allowing a thing and YT/Google doing the thing itself.
Personally, I don't think that the AI voice that Scarlett Johansson thinks is her voice is her voice like her voice has a little bit more raspy tone, whereas the ai has only a subtle raspy tone to it.
But this couple are legit though. And some scary stuff. And it's basically people's livelihood and any potential individuals who would like to go into voice acting will have a harder and harder time being able to find work.
I agree, is not at all, is actually from a voice actress that open ai hired and that was going to be paid for life, but scarlett and her ego ruined that for her, cause apparently nobody is allow to sound even close to her, I don't like her anymore after that.
Open AI asked if Scarlett Johansson could voice for them because they liked her voice in "Her." She refused. Open AI easily believed they could get around that by hiring someone else to sound like her. It may not have the same raspiness, but the tone and cadence are similar.
Mind you, a higher-up from Open AI really went out there and said yes, certain creative jobs will lose their jobs but maybe it's deservedly so. That's a messed up thing to say.
AI companies want to make money for themselves (it's not about saving money like they want their consumers to believe). And they do it by stealing without permission or compensation.
@@fleur_and_flower Yes and that would be an issue if the voice actress actually sounded exactly like scarlett and not similar. Scarlett took someone's income away cause apparently nobody is allow to sound even similar to her, that voice isn't scarlett is the voice of the hired actress and it should be seen as that, but anyway she got away with it.
Watch people care way more about actors being copied by artificial intelligence than visual artists.
Cause cloned voices can be used for fraud, scams, defamation, making people think you did or say something you didn't.
Cause cloned voices can be used for fraud, scams, defamation, making people think you did or say something you didn't.
@@kibathefang6022 I agree that’s a bad thing, but that’s not really what they’re saying in this piece. The actors’ voices are what give them the ability to have a career and make money. Visual artists face the same dilemma with their intellectual property being absorbed by AI to essentially replace them. My point/fear is that more people will care about putting safeguards and permissions in place for actors, and visual artists will remain doomed to having their work collaged without royalties or any say in the matter.
Cloning your voice is legal but cloning the sticker on your pants is illegal.
Who is going to want to work with something that when published can be trained on and re-created for free? NOBODY. - So what happens when everyone stops working on things that can be trained on? Well we will forever recycle the same old train data. But hey... it will be cheap.
Also if you are a Art Directory. Movie director. AI developer. Who thinks "Oh this is good for me.. my job is not in danger" - Well don't you think millions of people are gonna just start to compete for YOUR role? - I'm not saying AI is bad. I'm just saying we need a new system.
In the old days you would hire musician to come and play for you. Then the CD was invented. Then suddenly we needed copyright protection which we otherwise never needed before. Because you can hire anyone to play any kind of music in your own home, but when new technology came new ways we had to do things.
Human voice belong to human, not machine. I avoid any YT video that use the AI voice like a plague these days. It's disgusting that those voice work narration should be a job of human voice actors/artists, no, they decided to use the soulless AI voices (which personally cause me headache) for convenience and low cost. They probably didn’t read their contract with a lawyer. I don’t this will go anywhere.
I mean they said that they were assured by the people at Lovo that their voices would only be used internally and likely have a copy of the contract to be assured in doing so. Even if their contracts didn’t say that specifically, they could still argue for deception where they were told their contracts were for one thing when it was for another. The fact that Lovo didn’t respond could be telling that there’s some ambiguity in the contract because it would be easy and desirable for a company like Lovo to just come out and say “we didn’t breach our contract, the plantifs read it wrong”, but the fact that they didn’t shows that it’s not an open and shut for Lovo.
That's the beginning of AI... It would be able to create EVERYTHING
Curious to know, without using AI at all, is voice impersonation/impression considered a theft to the original voice actor? Individual's voice isn't as unique as you think. What about drawing an art of someone's likeless, such as fan art or rule 34, without the use of AI, is that considered theft or violating? If not, is it only considered a theft if AI is involved?

Find a new career, with AI, no one needs voice actors anymore 🤷🏻♀️
It wasn't imitating it copied.
This is a hard case where those who are on the side of AI and not humans will always say it's not the humans' voices. Not realizing that companies can always tweak a voice the same you can edit your writing. A company can then have plausible deniability that will make it hard for people to claim it's their voice.
It's not a hard case if you care about the economy. Literally tech companies have said the end goal of AI is to replace labor costs, not generate new AI jobs, eliminate jobs. And I've heard Sam Altman when pressed to explain the new jobs that would offset mass unemployment double what the 1930s Great Depression was, mention something about UBI. He's not lobbying for UBI mind you, he's just saying, maybe we'll need UBI, how that comes about, he doesn't care. Replacing labor with AI is his goal.
So you can look at AI impacting actors and say, this is a hard case, but you are laying the foundation for them to make more profits to invest more in AI, and replace your job and most people around you leading to the collapse of the modern nation state that has been with us for centuries. This is like the German poem, "First they came..." Actors need our support so we all can protect the economy.
@@jmhorange I think we're on the same side but I've worked at tech companies -- we're all disposable in their view and with the money they have, it's a tough fight, not especially when maybe a few could call them out -- and others will just be ok being railroaded to the so-called benefits of AI. It will disrupt people's jobs, for sure. Now as for UBI, that could happen in Europe as they even have imposed stronger guardrails against AI. I have set my sights on moving to Europe, particularly Spain, where UBI could be seen as a solution, not a handout. They're more for the people, if you know what I mean. ;-)

This is why these jobs need unions and labor laws to prevent all that. Newer actors are gonna want to take all thr jibs they can get a d wont think or care about giving away their likness and voice.
