Wow, a car review with real detail, (but not bogged down) and stated in plain language - keep it up mate!
I love the car. The only thing I wish it had is the proper Mazda design. Though, this design, inherited from the Yaris, is nice too. The interior is very functional, and obviously the economy is superb.
I do like most of it, I don't like the front end and the lack of padding in the armrests leads to sore arms.
I own this exact car and achieve 81mpg driving on the a6 for a 50 mile round trip, and 90+ around the city. £50 to fill up shows 500 miles on the screen. I love it
That's amazing economy.
500 miles in my Kia EV would cost me around £20..... and I don't have to *drive* to a petrol station to get my fuel....I can fill up on my drive while I sleep.

American here. Can confirm that rear view cameras are compulsory here, but unfortunately, this car isn’t available here yet! Manufacturers seem to have decided to not sell small cars like this in the US anymore, and they have chosen a rather inopportune time to do that because the SUV trend has abruptly reversed over here, and pretty harshly. Manufacturers really don’t seem to want to respond to this change yet.😂😂😂

Thank you for excellent review. I think this is the most accurate and precise review of this car I’ve seen. (I have owned the Toyota version for almost a year so it was interesting to see your perception of the rebadged Mazda, which matched with my experience. I think it’s a near perfect car.)

Back watching this review now that Mazda have refreshed - and differentiated - the design of this car for 2024. Still clearly a Yaris sibling but slightly less obvious now. Impressive car!

It's funny to see how the Mazda 2 hybrid in the UK is a rebadged Yaris, whereas in the US the Yaris is a rebadged Mazda 2.
Great review Richard, the first I have seen from your channel. I have a Corolla Hybrid and a new Yaris Hybrid on order (both GR-Sport spec) and this car is just wonderful. I know the Mazda 2 is a rebadged Yaris so it will serve Mazda well and no doubt they will have many a happy customer.
Eco mode though is next to worthless in the Yaris/2, same with power mode tbh. You will get the same efficiency in the default mode, and yep lane assist is annoying 😂
I also drive my 2.0 GR Corolla on the Cruise Control as often as possible, it’s such a lazy man’s tool but works great 🙂
Toyota hybrid owner here. Never bothered with eco mode beyond trying it when I first got it. It’s already very efficient compared to its competitors in normal mode, so I’d rather enjoy driving with a normal throttle mapping instead of the odd delay in power. I think you might have been more impressed with the acceleration response if it wasn’t in eco mode.
I didn't notice a difference, but I'm not used to the car which is probably why. I guess the throttle is less sensitive but when learning a car changing the sensitivity a bit isn't very noticeable to me.
I think eco mode is okay round town, if thats what I mostly did but I agree with you in that normal mode would be my daily choice. Ive driven the Prius and the Yaris hybrids and eco just feels a bit wooly

Great review very informative. One thing that no one except yourself has mentioned is about the actual comfort of the seats! I originally test drove a Mazda Agile several weeks back and apart from the way it drove etc, far quicker by the way than the Mazda 2 Skytronic, which was pedestrian from starting off compared to the Agile, very disappointed, is that the seats were very comfortable, like my current Mazda of 2011. This morning I went to test drive the similar spec Toyota Design model with my son. Again it drove really well same as the Mazda, my son also put it through it's paces and he agreed very good drive, with one exception, the back of the seats were really hard and not that comfortable. Both of us were of the same opinion that the seats were too firm and we wouldn't want to take this on a long journey due to that. I spoke to the Toyota sales consultant when we got back about this and he sort of agreed that the seats were a bit firm, so we sat in the next model up, but to be honest it wasn't much better and quite firm, unlike other Toyota cars which are firm but with nice cushioning and very comfortable. So thats a big and major difference IMO between the two cars, as comfort is a priority, especially on longer journeys as I do suffer from back trouble. My son also agreed and he is going to come with me when I test drive the Mazda again, so he can also give his opinion on this issue.

Our 2016 1.3 iVtec will do 60mpg on fast A roads and 48mpg around town.
Also lots of back seat space, it's huge.

Superb review. This is a great car. The Mazda wins if you want better ride comfort because of the smaller alloys available. Its not a cheap car, neither is the Yaris hybrid although it depends what you can afford but for me, 20 - 22k for a car is about as much as i'm prepared to spend. The thing is, this will last a long time. I would be looking at keeping it at least 10 years, even longer once it's paid for. I don't do a lot of miles but as its a Toyota underneath it should be ultra reliable, although Toyota has the 10 year warranty (so long as you get it serviced at a main dealer each year). The other thing is the engine will last so much longer because it's not always on. The Prius can do 500,000 miles easily because of that. NOTE - If you get the Agile model because you want the smaller more comfortable alloys, its worth paying for the comfort pack (£980) which gives you LED lights front and rear plus digital speedo readout. This model doesnt show 30mph and 70mph on the standard dial, its just grey markers. Odd for a UK supplied car. If you get the next model up so you get the extras included, there isn’t an option to downgrade the wheels to 15inch by the looks of it.
To be fair most engines will do many hundreds of thousands of miles when looked after. Toyota had a piston ring problem a while back which meant engines burnt oil with not that high miles. They did sort it though. My Leon now has 194,000 and the engine still feels strong. This video may be of interest: ruclips.net/video/v4JS7PybV2k/видео.html
@@RichardFanders A long time ago with the Toyota problem which is why I probably hadnt heard about it. The choice between keeping an older car running or replacing with new is always a hard one. Plusses and minuses to both choices. A new one would cost more than my current 65 plate Subaru, but these hybrids are way more economical, my round town MPG is rubbish and would be far cheaper in the long run as regards fuel and maintenance with a new hybrid.
Been interested in this model for a while. As long as its easy to turn off all those driving asists I think I might get one primarily as they are so good on fuel.
You can turn off lane assist by holding the button for 3 seconds, but as far as I could tell, you have to do this every time you start the car.
Excellent details….this is what people need when thinking about buying a car.
So I see a car here which is very good but let down by some penny pinching.
My Honda has a lot of plastic but not that much…and the arm rests are padded.
Forgot to add-
My Honda with cvt auto doesn’t easily “pin” the rev counter like that Mazda/Toyota….its very well contained in 99% of situations-feels almost like a traditional automatic….but this is a regular car, not hybrid or turbo.
Being a bit older it has lane warning but not assist.
I was getting nearly 52mpg average in that short period of spring weather in feb 2024….but fell quickly to 51 when the temp dropped. This is without turbos or hybrid…only idle stop. It’s also a hilly area.
I paid £19,000 for mine which is the category above….so not happy about smaller car now costing more.
And with that tho I would get an upgrade in some areas such as radar cruise instead of plain cruise, I would get a downgrade in others…the Mazda 2 + Yaris is smaller (quite a lot smaller, no flat floor in the boot, and manual height adjustment for headlights). The fuel tank is too small…..I’m sure my fuel gauge wouldn’t fall back as quick as the one in the Mazda, even tho my car is less economical.
I haven’t seen an engine temp gauge in a new car for a few years.
And what’s with the blanking buttons for the rear window winders.
Here’s a thought….the old Mazda 2 uses the Mazda sky active-g engine…..very economical in its own right.
Is that still worth considering instead of this new Toyota-Mazda 2?
The mystery slowdown with radar cruise is because it saw a car in front of you that was stopped.

Hey Richard, I've recently picked up driving again after many many years, and your videos have been very helpful even if I drive on the other side. I've recently ordered one of these (actually the 2024 Yaris) and was wondering if I did myself any good as a "new" beginner. I've tried both this and a cheap EV and they both feel really nice to drive, while actually I'm still a little tense when driving with parents in their manual. Am I cheating? :3
Hey Richard, I’ve been watching for a long time and you helped me pass my driving test! Recently I bought a car which is manual transmission, it has a small petrol engine, and also it has electronic parking brakes which you need to press on the brake for a second to deactivate the parking brake. My question to you is how is someone with a car like this supposed to perform a hill start as the car can easily roll back? Thanks a lot!
Thank you for watching. Usually when you add gas and lift the clutch to move electronic parking brakes automatically disengage.

I have nothing against Mazda but I would purchase the car with it's original badge. Why should I give al credits to mazda when is toyota the one I should give my money to?? 😝
Toyota is more expensive and also you can't do a finance agreement for 4 years with toyota, only 3. I recently said the same and did some shopping around both dealers before purchase one 😂 I mean I'd rather of had toyota, but mazda have saved me a small fortune haha
It's a nice car... I also think it's good that Mazda, as a smaller car company, has teamed up with Toyota for this project. Would be a good choice for my daily 70 km commute to and from work, because I pay extreme attention to my fuel consumption. The design is not bad... but also not Mazda at all, although I must say that I like the interior very much.
Would I buy the car? Absolutely not... at least not now and not new. I am currently driving a 10 year old VW up! with which I get 52 mpg (4.5 L on 100 km) and my goal is to buy a Mazda MX-5 for the summer, I am a big Mazda fan and the MX-5 is my dream car. My up! will easily last another 6 years and until then I could well imagine this Mazda 2 Hybrid used as a second car.
I have a 2015 Mazda2 and recently managed 76.3mpg on the 14 mile commute to work recently. Them N/A 1500cc petrol Skyactiv engines are fantastic on fuel. I reckon I'll average over 100mpg in this hybrid version.

@John Hall Yes agree. Plus if you buy the proper Mazda 2 with skyactiv g engine you can have a very slick manual box so it's fun to drive as well as being super economical if you drive it sensibly.

Very good review. Just weird to see a different logo glued onto a Yaris. Interior looks very plasticky on video- 12:04 that looks like it belongs in a Dacia Sandero or base trim Aygo
I have ordered the Mazda 2 hybrid agile (with the comfort pack) as I didn't like the heads up display on the top of the range model. However I have to say for £23,000, they could have included all round parking sensors or had it as an optional extra like the Toyota Yaris do.
Good choice. Better ride comfort on 15 inch alloys though than the 16 or 17 inch on the Toyota Yaris Hybrid. Ive tested the Yaris, you feel every bump. Sporty look is not always the best.
@@oddities-whatnot totally agree and that was my reason for choosing that spec. Also more economical too as less drag. Only benefit to big alloys and low profile tyres is they look good.
Not many people know if you long press your adaptive cruise button it reverts to normal cruise which I prefer. This is usually the case with alot of manufacturers.

I am going to order the mazda2 select because it has 16 inch wheels instead of 17 inch which is on the Toyota Yaris excel model, plus I like the on screen display, plus the biggest bonus is it’s a Toyota and not based on the Ford Fiesta like the old model mazda2
The Mazda 2 hybrid (Yaris) is an excellent car, I've hired one for my holiday and my other half has ordered a Corolla Hybrid (needs a bigger car than the Mazda 2/Yaris) because the Hybrid system was so good. I think the petrol Mazda 2 is a bespoke Mazda platform, I could be wrong, I know the old shape was a Fiesta but the current Mazda 2 was made after Ford's ownership.
Good point. Im not bothered about spec levels though, its comfort for me thats important. We managed in the old days with basic cars so I dont need one full of gadgets. The Agile model is my choice for the 15 inch wheels which would give a great ride quality.
You buy a mazda because of their clean and premium looking design both in and out, this is a weird car imo, i would buy a Mazda 3 design with the prius hybrid system under the bonnet, not the other way around
You need to use the indicator which temporarily suspends the lane keep assist. As the car then knows it was a deliberate input in the steering. At least that's how my 2019 Vauxhall Grandland X seems to work
Sometimes using an indicator when for example passing parked cars can be misleading when there are junctions around. I prefer to turn off the system when I can
Indicating left to come back to the correct side of the road after passing parked cars makes it look like you're pulling over or about to turn left.
@@RichardFanders yes, I more meant what the system understands though in order to not do the centre lane correction. If the signal is on it seems to understand that the driver is in control and will not auto adjust or give a warning beep.
At least that’s what I have understood how the system works on my car.
This lane keep system is meant to prevent you from drifting out of lane, not control the car instead of you, and it does that extremely well.
That's lane departure warning. Lane trace assist is Toyota's auto steering. The Yaris (Mazda 2) has generation 2.0 but the 2023 Corolla has generation 3.0 and it seems much better. It's part of the Toyota Safety Sense package.

14:23 Asian Cars get cameras more easily than sensors. For european cars, you first get sensors then you get camera
16:16 I think you get those mixed up because there are CV-shafts which stand for Constant Velocity Shaft
It is more the constant sound than getting mixed up with the CV joint.

When you say boring, I disagree unless you want a sports car, in which case get one then ! Did you know you can enjoy driving and keep to the speed limits, yes ? I have an Impreza and I go slow so I can wave at all the bell ends flying past burning fuel.

The car slowed you down as you turned on the adaptive cruise control and you had a stationary car in front and then that car pulled off on the round about.
At the time it started slowing down the car at the roundabout was quite far away and as the road wasn't bending it wasn't really in front of me. If it was picking that car up I'm impressed.

Very impressive economy.. + it didn't really seem like you were trying to get good economy either, just driving normally and accelerating quite hard in some places.

Those assists aren’t really meant for anything other than dual carriageway/motorway. Imo the Yaris hybrid/this are the best car in the class on sale today.
Would you recommend getting the mazda over the Toyota I know it's a bit cheaper but is the Toyota quality a bit better or basically the same
They're basically the same, I would check out the trim levels of both and both dealerships and see which on you prefer. Toyota offer a good warranty if you service it with them.
Richard, when do you think you would commit to full electric for your own car?
For my other half we will as soon as we have somewhere to plug it in at home - currently we don't so it doesn't make financial or practical sense. For me, well I teach manual so I need to stick to manuals, but I also enjoy manual so my fun car will be petrol for a long time yet. Be intersting if someone makes a hydrogen combustion manual sports car, I would be very interested.
I find it ironic Mazda selling the Yaris hybrid in EU/UK. Between ~2015-2020? Toyota sold a Mazda based "Yaris" in North America.
I wonder if they will also sell the Yaris hybrid based "Mazda 2" in Australia as well, though I think more likely they will just stop sale of any "Mazda 2" entirely as unfortunately in Australia light class new cars are becoming unpopular, despite holding their value really well in the used market.
There are far fewer small cars available in the UK now, user prices do seem strong.
probably should be obvious given that you are in the UK, but is this US miles per gallon, or UK miles per gallon (literally got no clue on what the difference is, i use km/l)
Can you please tell me: am I correct or incorrect in saying that the 2023 facelifted Mazda 2 Hybrid now as a 4 rather than a 3 cylinder engine...?
It's a 1.5 3 cylinder for the Mazda 2 hybrid (Toyota Yaris) and pretty sure the 1.5 in the Mazda 2 mild hybrid is a 4 cylinder unless it has recently changed.

The Americans get a Mazda 2 badged as Toyota Yaris oddly enough, and Mazda themselves don't sell the Mazda 2 over there anymore, the USA is really SUV country now
My wife took her driving test some years ago at 50 years old , but refuses to drive our Volvo v70. Desperatly trying to get her behind the wheel. Would you say this little Mazda would be a good choice for her ?

I did three tests for the consumption, urban, rural and motorway and I reset it each time.

Been having my Yaris since May and averaged 4.4 litres since (varying between 4.0 and 4.9) , but with a lot of country roads and some motorways. Would probably less with more city driving. When I had a rental for a week on Sicily last year, the indicated average was 3.5 litres, so probably 3.8 in reality, but that car was the lowest trim level available while mine is fully equipped.
@@Sellerieknolle76 thanks for this explanation. I am waiting for my in December, I heard that consumption depends on wheels size and type of tires, I count on consumption between 4 to 4,5l per 100km
@@miko3937 At these low numbers every little thing could have a relevant impact. So I blame it on the 17 inches and all the extras that I couldn't get below 4.0 yet.
So it's just a base model Toyota Yaris with a slightly more Mazda interior?
The interior is exactly like the Yaris. The only differences between the cars are the badge and the available trim levels.

This won't be my new car, I'm very happy with my Leon, now has 187,000 miles on it and I've managed to keep it in like new condition. I need a manual also. We are thinking about a hybrid for my other half though as it would suit her needs.
Queues are not great for normal cars, but for hybrids like this they are advantageous. Ask me how I know…😂😂😂

Mazda and Toyota have a partnership, if I'm not mistaken, so from a financial standpoint it makes sense to utilize your partner's technology rather than develop your own.

Peugeot and Citroen actually merged to form the "Groupe PSA" or Peugeot Citroen Group (Now they are part of Stellantis) whereas Toyota and Mazda are seperate companies, who in 2015 signed a "long term partnership" deal which saw them sharing parts and manufacturing.
Only get a 3 year warranty with Mazda 10 year warranty on a Toyota
My only concern for this car is the CVT. How long will it last? What is the service interval as well as the cost of servicing CVT? I prefer original design of Mazda2 latest gen. Great video. Many thanks.
This car does not have a CVT as you may know it. It's an e-CVT, incredibly reliable and efficient. I think it's a fantastic piece of engineering, if you're interested in mechanics and engineering I recommend looking into it. So simple but clever.
Its an Ecvt, no belt. Even if it had a belt I wouldn’t worry. My last Subaru had one, no problems.

It is a bad place to put the buttons. By fake I mean blanked off, this is where a button would be on a higher spec model.
I would get the normal Toyota Yaris Hybrid instead.
This is literally a Yaris with Mazda logo which is interesting.
@@cnbkyn4139 They’re doing this so that Mazda can reduce their overall carbon dioxide emissions in their European fleet, reducing costs. It’s gonna cost them a lot for Mazda to make a completely different vehicle.

Looks like Mazda rebadged a Toyota Yaris there as a Mazda2, similar to how Toyota rebadged a Mazda2 as a Yaris for a couple years here in the USA.
It's funny how they have both been rebadged.
Sorry to say but if you try to judge the economy of a hybrid on a motorway in such a short trip, you can't get real measurements. Of course it will be as economic as on normal roads as the battery never runs down but if you try a bigger trip, like 100 or 200km things will be different because the car doesn't have so many chances to recharge and there will be time when you will just be dragging that battery weight around and mileage will go down.
It would be good to see how it performs in a longer trip, specially because it looks like a decently comfortable car, with nice ride and we know it will more than be capable of handling a lot of miles up and down a motorway as it is a Japanese car and it will be expected to be reliable.
This is true, I did ask to have the car on a 1000 mile journey but it was not available. I am looking into this though.
I see your point but if someone is buying a small little hatch they probably won’t be doing long journeys all that often. They might do, but I think shorter trips is more representable of the people who’ll buy this yaris “Mazda 2”
The previous gen looks so much nicer imo, both Toyota and Mazda have solid reliability as Japanese brands so I can see why the collab occurred but the 2 has lost its character and sporty looks with this rebadge sadly, looks cheap too.
The older Mazda 2 is still available.

First of all whatever mpg shows on the dash it's a lot lower in reality
Second you need to drive over 1000 miles for a close to accurate mpg
And the best part is I drive a 15 year old gen2 prius that does 75mpg on original battery try and match that mate in that little box
For my other half it would be as soon as we have somewhere at home to plug it in - we don't at the moment. For me, it will be a very long time, I enjoy manual but also teaching manual is my job.
75 mpg is absolutely possible in this car and what the bord computer says is very accurate actually in this one. It's about as efficient as the Prius 4. Slightly more when driving slowly because it's smaller and has a smaller engine and slightly less when driving faster because the Prius has the aerodynamic shape which the Yaris doesn't have. I own the Yaris hybrid with the Toyota logo, almost top level configuration (Premiere Edition in Germany lacked parking sensors, glass roof, blind angle assists and navigation) and the big 17 inch wheels which are bad for fuel economy but I already got 3,8 l/100 km which is the equivalent of 75 UK mpg. You would probably get even better fuel economy if you can already drive your Prius II so efficiently.
Great review. I feel like it is too cheap feeling. I would definitely advise someone to go for a Peugeot 208 1.5 HDI if they want economy. Actually feels like it warrants the price you pay.

this is not mazda .this is toyota ..mazda 2 is what i have ,2008 model naturally aspirated and above all not hybrid ..this is mazda for me .four cylinder and NOT hybrid
A good review, but I don't really see a purpose for it nor would I ever buy such a car. It is not a Mazda, it is a Toyota Yaris with a Mazda amblem. Nothing more. It doesn't even fit into the product palette of Mazda, the "normal" Mazda 2 looks different.
I suppose the styling's a matter of taste, but I think it's ugly outside and not attractive inside. The switches seem to be scattered around in a random fashion, too. It bears no resemblance to any Mazda I've ever seen. I can't understand what Mazda were thinking. If they wanted to use Toyota's undoubtedly sound system, why throw away all the styling cues and superior interior design and quality for this!
