I test drove this car today and Richard's review is spot on. A really enjoyable drive. You do have to use the gears but If you get the gears and the clutch right it didn't feel flat at all. I didn't need to over rev the engine, and yes I am buying one, confirmed the order, with the Toyota dealer today.

When I was first considering this car, alot of other reviewers put me off, with the main focus being on the 1.0 litre engine and rear space, no mention on things like the excellent safety kit that comes as standard. I actually did think I wish there was review from Richard on this one, and now here we are 😊. Very informative as always thank you!

The problem with many reviewers is they don't focus on the purpose of the car if it doesn't fit their purpose. Namely it's launch time against a Lambo, flashiness or expense. What most people want to know is if a car will fit their needs from an impartial reviewer. Which is what we have here. Great review.

The one and only reason this car has a 1 litre engine is because of fuel economy the fact it doesn’t do 0 - 60 in 4 seconds is obvious there’s two much emphasis on top speed and acceleration driving on uk roads is top speed of 70 mph if it didn’t do that it would be a problem but it does. Very good in depth review Richard I’m definitely in the market for one of these thanks for sharing 👍

Probably the best review of a car I have ever seen! The car itself is one of the best looking cars you can buy at any price, shame the dash (speedo/rev counter are not better designed) and the engine is not a bit more powerful, but apart from that its a great looking car.

Saw one recently for the first time and thought it looked pretty cool. Small yet chunky. Toyota are to be applauded for still offering a relatively cheap A segment product. More interesting than a VW Up or an i10 and as you mentioned that 3 pot engine sounds sweet.

I have the CVT. It's great - super smooth, and easy to dose the revs. So long as you don't drive aggressively, it's lovely. I've road-tripped mine a lot. From Northern Poland to Italy and back a couple of times, through the Alps; around Croatia, and also to the South West of Germany. It's very planted at speed, and effortless with the motorway assistance systems. Would be nice if road noise were a little lower at 125-130 km/h, but not too instrusive, and good for a tiny car. Main problem is lack of steering reach adjustment! At a solid 125 km/h - including over the Alps - I get 4.9 l per 100 kms without AC, and about 5.1 with.

The previous Aygo feels like cheap rubbish compared to the Aygo X. I can tell because I have driven both. You really notice that the Aygo X basically is a shortened Yaris. That also justifies the higher price in my opinion. You get a high and very comfortable driver position while still having a compact car that fits into any parking lot without trouble.
It's a matter of opinion though, this car gets as much love as it gets hate. I personally like it.

I've owned both the old Aygo 2021 and this new one and at first I thought I wouldn't like it, But now I like way more than the last version. The CVT is a massive improvement over the automated manual in the last model. All the additional features, tighter turning circle, the build and height are great. Was an interesting review particularly as I'm a previous Aygo owner. I bought an Aygo Blue 5dr back in 2008 which I used for driving tuition. There have obviously been considerable improvements made since then, you mentioned the quietness at 70mph, my car had high levels of road noise and driving at 50mph on the motorway for an hour used to give me a headache. As to reliability I was unfortunate enough to have the water pump seize which took the drive belt with it when the car had only done 8k miles, managed to get it to the dealer just as the overheating warning light came on. Dealer said it would take 3 days to get the part, highly inconvenient as I had a pupil taking their test the following day, after some pleading they said they would remove the water pump from another Aygo they had in the showroom 😅 Have to admit I didn't have much faith in the car after that. Agree that the gearing holds it back, 5th gear was fine but the other 4 would have benefited from being lower. In general pupils liked it but when I eventually sold my private use car it had to go, swapped it for a Skoda Fabia VRS 1.9Tdi, now that was a fabulous car 😊

Not enough demand for Aygo-sized cars among new-car buyers. Prices for new cars are going up (whether due to safety and emissions regulations or just inflation) and the sort of buyer who would buy the old Aygo is likely going for used cars. But demand for higher-riding hatchbacks (crossovers) is strong and so car makers are tapping into that market instead as people are willing to pay more there.
I also suspect the Aygo was built taller this generation to prepare for an EV version as the floor would need to be higher to accommodate the battery. But that’s just me speculating.

The same could be said for any new car vs a used car. It depends how much the buyer values being the first owner.

This will be my first car and I've put a deposit down for a second hand CVT (auto) Pure trim at around £14k, the reason is the insurance :) I could get an older Yaris for that price but costs twice as much to insure. I test drove an older Aygo and didn't like the way auto worked in that one. Dealer tried to sell me PCP which had a lower interest rate for a new Aygo X than a used one, so if I had chose PCP I would have gone with brand new as over the term it was the same as a 2 year old car anyway.

Great comprehensive review. The 3-cylinders, lack of proper rear windows and odd exterior styling puts me off. I think the Hyundai i10 has it beat on all these points. Gotta hand it to Toyota for the economy and 10-year warranty though.

The car is aimed at retirees for the odd jaunt to the garden centre/supermarket....I have not seen anyone driving it under 70 years old. With that in mind I have some advice for Toyota....drop the silly leccy driver `aides`; Cruise control, hill assist, sign recog, steer assist, auto lights etc....then make the base model £13,900....then you will sell 35% more units.

That's good advice for Toyota ( and probably a few other car makers ) unfortunately I don't think they will listen.

No, buy an older used car. In my opinion, a new car is not worth the risk of being damaged (more likely as a new driver).

I can't find any reason for anyone to buy this car over a Picanto X-Line for basically the same money. Even the basic Picanto seems better, to be honest.

It's a massive downgrade on the previous Aygo that came before it which was quicker, more fuel efficent and more comfortable to drive. The raised ride height and the silly tall narrow wheels make the car want to roll over for which Toyota compensated by fitting a stiffer suspension so you get a rough ride and poor handling at the same time. The tall narrow wheels have a weird tyre size so they have to be ordered in no same day fitting and they are £150 a prop on what's meant to be a simple economy car. The only advantage this car has is a much better turning circle thanks to the tall wheels. It's still a mechanically sound car and relatively efficent but I see no reason why if you have a MK2 Toyota Aygo you would drop it for this car.

I think it's a bad idea to make cars with names that people can't pronounce or will say incorrectly - simplicity is key when it comes to naming cars in my opinion.
