  • Jan. 22, 2022 - As we enter the height of winter, the ice in Lake Michigan is starting to become more well-defined. I rode from North Avenue Beach to DuSable Harbor to get a good view of the lake. At the end of the video, you can see DuSable Harbor was mostly frozen over with a few ice fishermen out on the water. It's always a strange sight to see them out fishing downtown in the winter.

That's awesome. Once you get about a minute into the ride, is that ice or salts on the paved path? If it's salts, do you need to do maintenance to keep bike parts from rusting?

That’s all salt! It’s pretty insane how much salt we use in Chicago. It’s horrible for the environment but it definitely does a good job de-icing the roads. I usually clean my bikes once at the end of the winter. I haven’t had a problem yet but they’re durable Dutch bikes so a little bit of rust is probably ok.

Where'd you get your Dutch bike? In Chicago?

Yeah I got it in Chicago. There’s a shop here called JC Lind that specializes in Dutch bikes.
