  • CHRIST CHURCH AMHERSTBURG - ONTARIO'S OLDEST MILITARY ANGLICAN CHURCH IN CANADA AND ONTARIO'S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING CHURCH IN ONTARIO
    Built: 1819
A wonderful quaint little church sits on a quiet side street in the town of Amherstburg.
Constructed in 1819, it has become a unique part of the area's history.
The land for the church was originally part of Fort Malden's burial ground.
Col. William Caldwell donated one acre of land as well as 100 guineas to the church under the condition that a pew be marked and held for his use.
His pew is still marked today.
In 1819 , the walls were erected by the Royal Army Corp of Engineers.
The bricks (which were a gift of Robert Reynolds of Bellevue House) were floated down the river by barge from River Rouge. A plaque denoting his kind gesture is still visible in the church today.
Inside the church, the wonderful array of stained glass windows dates back to the 1800's with each window having its own story and unique part of history.
The 10" square red oak timbers supporting the roof are still visible today made possible by the loosening of the plaster when dynamite was used during the construction of the Livingstone Channel in the Detroit River (1912)
Two hundred and five years later, Reverend Lisa Poultney welcomes everyone to the small Anglican Parish. Despite increasing costs, declining attendance, the church is still standing and is a testament to the resilience of the small nucleus of people that support it.
If you would like to attend a service, support the church or find out more about this historical church, please contact the Reverend Lisa at 519-736-7636 or visit the church on Facebook at Christ Church Amherstburg.
