How To Land ANY EDF Jet!

  • In this video we go over landing a EDF Jet in a lot of wind. The most important thing is to learn that plane. Slow fly it up high and see how it responds. See where it will stall, see how the elevator acts. Once you learn the slow flight you can judge how slow it will land. Holding your flair is the most important part. Keep practicing and you will get it!

    I had a guy that has been flying turbines for decades see one of my landings that I bounced and mains touched first then the nose so I assumed it was the spring causing it on the nose suspension. He said, "I bet your holding back pressure on the elevator, let off the elevator as soon as your mains touch!" I did the next go around and it stuck, no bounce. I fly mainly tail dragger war-birds and have for many years so I have to tell myself there is no prop strike or tail over about to happen when flying my EDFs. lol. Been flying RC since the 80s and just never knew I was doing it wrong with the jets. We always can learn if we know how to take criticism and critique from people.

      It’s definitely a fine balance and learning to hold your flair just enough to let the aircraft settle in, but not so much elevator that you can balloon or porpoise the aircraft. Of course, every airplane is going to land completely different, but the gist of it is all the same. For example, landing a big war bird is completely different than Landing jet or piper cub. Lol. We can always learn no matter what. You can never know everything!

    Nah, I think there's some improvement possible here… as a instructor/examinator I teach my students the following procedure.
    The landing starts in the down leg straight in front of you. Throttle at 40- 50%, gear down stabilise etc, than make a nice big flat u turn and on final throttle down to 20-25%. Hold that level until gear on the ground than slowly kill throttle.
    If you can’t land because plane is to high or low go around extend or shorten the down leg. A trick is to count 6 to 9 secs from the point straight in front across the circuit and moment of starting the u turn.
    On final, the plane will fly slow with nose up use throttle a few clicks of throttle to effect hight. Use elevator to controle the speed, nose up will make the plane slow down and nose down will make the plane go faster. At the flare point you can give also 2 or 3 clicks more throttle. This will give the plane more linear stability, so it will bounce less and not tumble over.
    Try this a few times, you will see a more stabile and smoother landing.

      One thing you have to remember with this video is the winds were 35+ mph. Almost every time I land you can never see you touch the ground! I do and don’t agree with a lot, but I understand with what you are saying. I do not like leaving the throttle the whole way down. I like to glide the aircraft and then only add throttle if needed so I don’t over shoot the runway. On a calm day, I can land any airplane at any point in front of me almost every time. But we all have our ways that we like, and or teach to learn better, or everybody learns at a different rate.

    Hey Jeff, hope you have been doing well! Have you tried to set any of your planes/jets up on Vbar yet? I know they make flight controllers but was wondering what your toughts are about them?

      I am doing great! How about yourself? No, I have not tried yet. But I really want to soon! I’m actually going to buy a nine channel RX and see how easy or simple it is.

    Hi Jeff, which receiver do you use for planes? Same SRLX2 as for the helies?

      Hello! I use regular Receivers. This plane has a AR6610T no gyro. A SRXL2 will plug in the 6610T but I don’t use them alone.

    I started in the hobby with heli's and never wanted to fly planes i thought they were just way to "easy" compared to helicopters blah blah planes are for sissys lol i have a buddy that got started same time as me but with planes our rivalry planes vs helis anywsys he gave me a couple planes he had crashed so i precisely glued and pinned them back together because i figured it would be a relaxing break from helis well now a year later im addicted i have all kinds of extreme flight planes and love bush flying the bushmaster etc etc turns out planes werent as easy as i assumed they were lol now i fly helis to get a relaxing break from airplanes!!! Lol awesome flying jeff!! It would be cool to see u get a 48" hybrid skywing plane or something and try a couple 3d airplane videos for fun!!!

      Airplanes can definitely be tricky and hard to learn especially if you’re a helicopter pilot everything you already knew. Kind of goes out the window when you start all over again lol I’m glad you are enjoying airplanes! That is what I learned how to fly on 20+ years ago. I’ve actually got 120 cc yaks 54 that I need to finish. I’ve also got a Beast 60 which is a 3D monster. I’ll get those flying!

    im still trying to master the edf myself so when you say you drop your throttle on approach approx how much do you drop it to?? give me a approx percent that would help me out? Thanks and new to your channel.

      @@DronemanJoeRc Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy the channel. So once I’m lined up I cut throttle completely. I’ll add 10-15% power if need to help slow down as the fan is spinning slowly it create drag. But if you need more airspeed then go 30% power to come in.

      @@westhobbiesrc8051 wow you really cut it off that is interesting! Ive seen cut the throttle before landing and it stahls and the wing flips and hits the ground?? Forgive me if im wrong but i didnt know this fms your flying had retracts? My contact at HH told me they are coming out with a new viper in August and its slightly bigger than 70mm and thats all he can say. Im going to take my viper v3 fm HH tomorrow any advice??

      It is definitely nice to fly some planes. I fly a lot of planes. Actually I just don’t film because I know majority of the audiences helicopters but I still posted videos anyways lol. I just started on the wiring! I will have a video out very shortly! It’s Almost ready for the first start!

      Hello! So in my final right at my turn, I cut complete power and let the aircraft glide in and I control my glide. If I need a little bit more airspeed, I will add power or if I’m coming in a little too hot, I will add power to create drag.

      Yes, a little bit of power creature drag. That is why if you come in “dead stick” you land much faster then if you come in with a little power. The prop or fan spinning, creates a brake.
