this was a song that they have never played live because the vocals could not be duplicated! so lets not diss on it they dont play it for a reason they didnt play it in 87 when they were young enough to pull it off. i enjoyed it for what its worth.
Nice as it is to finally hear such a great song being played live, a couple of points: Edge on piano serves to highlight a glaring lack of guitar. The song is missing "something". Also, with the Arklow Silver Band recording the brass on the actual album, it just doesn't look right seeing these images on the backdrop..... It would've been a nice touch for some footage of the Arklow Silver Band to appear on screen. Every jigsaw needs all its pieces, lads!
I think its a great rendition, key dropped for bono to hit high notes in F, stripped back and thematically nostalgic.. in time it will be appreciated more i think
The issue with outdoor concerts is mainly the sound being lost. Remember seeing U2 both inside and outside during the ZOO TV tour and there is a big difference. I would always chose indoor if at all possible. Just getting a ticket puts pay to that idea :-)
Bono's range range is obviously much more limited than 1987 (the dude is 57), but he still sounds great when he's within his range. I think guitar would add a lot of the energy this rendition is lacking. It sounds good, just doesn't quite pop like most U2 live versions. Keep in mind this was the 2nd performance EVER of this song, the kinks will iron out in time
I'm really impressed with how Bono handled the chorus. Yeah I hope that the guitar replaces the piano even though the piano is lovely. To those slamming Bono for not matching the original version: If the younger Bono felt he couldn't sing it live, what makes you think today's Bono could match the original? That's such a stupid standard to hold.
Rez Agreed#!!!!! Plus, after all, it is 30 years later, and after watching this a couple of times and listening, I think it's AWESOME!!!! I think Bono sounds great!!!!! His vocals always get better as the tour goes along anyway. The only time his voice really took a beating was the 360 tour because they just simply made that tour too long!!
His voice actually sounds good to me. Of course he can't sing it like on the Joshua Tree. Its pretty different than the way it should be sung but he actually singing it with some serious power and his voice sounds good.

I'm still missing guitar but Bono sang it better than opening show.
It's not a bad version, but the original it's so good that it's imposible to say that this it's far from good if we compared both. The thing it's that they never have played this song because of the key of the voice and at the same time Bono have forced his voice a lot during the 80's and then it was getting worse and worse... although since the last tour he has recovered it a bit. If only Bono could play something the cover would be better than this one, but in my opinion it's not bad at all.
I felt Bono still has enough voice and breath during these songs, but he lost some artistic intensity. I can hear his voice but details, nuance, and emotion.
Still great cos this is fucking U2, the greatest band in the world, but, it is a different song completely. I would preferred if Bono lipsynced to the original to be honest. Still love u guys though!
What would make this a tad bit better is guitar in the chorus. It's just missing that extra punch to it when the band really picks it up. Not a bad version, just not great.
First of all: I think Bono delivered a great live performance here! Rez allready came with the reasons why comparing 2017 live Bono with 1987 studio Bono, is stupid standards to hold. Second of all. «Expected a version closer to the cover Dream Theater did???» James missed alot of notes on the version I heard from Dream Theater. I love Dream Theater, and had high expectation of their cover. But to be honest: In their cover, the band lacked soul, and James sucked by missing notes even in the verses...
cvachon7 Bono has said that he'd write songs that he couldn't sing live even back then. He said that this song would wreck his voice. So young Bono would likely be impressed that older Bono would have the balls to sing this at 57.
i love u2 but man this is really heartbreaking, where is the passion, people keep sayin but its not 30years ago, wll dont fukin include a song that needs full emotion. In my honest opinion i think u2 really needs to o back and listen and watch performances from years ago, fuk they might of aged but fuk they cannot forget what it means to sing these songs.
I meant with guitar, distortion, overdrive and more like the studio version... Anyway, diehards are hard to please. I hope it will get better by repetition and getting used to it.
I think the same. Shit version. Many covers bands sing better then this..and I don´t care if someone see this version as A FAVOR for us. This version is far far far far far away to be a good version.
Thank you!!! Nice job!!! Excellent sound!!!!

Jamie McManus totally agree. "Looove" 3:55
Hâte d'être à Paris !! :)
they may change the arrangement
this is still good.
Edge plays the guitar and it will be perfect ! Good vocals from Bono, I love his courage
The issue with outdoor concerts is mainly the sound being lost. Remember seeing U2 both inside and outside during the ZOO TV tour and there is a big difference. I would always chose indoor if at all possible. Just getting a ticket puts pay to that idea :-)
or just a smaller outdoor venue...
... like Red Rocks...
3:55 where does this new note come from... I love it.
Edge is good with piano, but he is a genious with the guitar...

Please bring the guitar back. I agree, this sounds better than Vancouver but still missing guitar.
I actually think the vocals are great and it's a pretty solid performance. They could improve it by adding the guitar but it still sounds good to me!
Logitec 2k4 I agree with you. Better with guitar.
I'm really impressed with how Bono handled the chorus. Yeah I hope that the guitar replaces the piano even though the piano is lovely. Rez absolutely right man!
thank you! my sentiments exactly!

Senti a falta da guitarra nessa versão
Love, slowly stripped away
Love, has seen its better day
Hanging onguys!!!
Welp...no change yet. I wonder if they are married to this version. Still hoping they revert to guitars before the Cleveland show.
Pale imitation of the Studio version
Bravo Bono dire molto meglio della prima:)
What kind of phone/camera is this? Great quality film considering it was a huge football stadium
Panasonic TZ81 30x Zoom
I missed the guitar in this version
This song is very beautiful
epic
from father.. to son...
jah live

This sounds pretty good actually.. I was expecting a much worse performance, it seems like his voice has recovered a little compared to last year
its so hard to sing well done bono
I felt Bono still has enough voice and breath during these songs, but he lost some artistic intensity. I can hear his voice but details, nuance, and emotion.

also time for promenade, elvis and MLK after all these years ffs
disappointed with all the 2017 live music there not going to last like the stones sorry guys but you still my favourite

If 1987 Bono could see what 2017 Bono is doing to this song, be would beat 2017 Bono and then piss on him.
cvachon7 Bono has said that he'd write songs that he couldn't sing live even back then. He said that this song would wreck his voice. So young Bono would likely be impressed that older Bono would have the balls to sing this at 57.
Bono's voice has aged well, arrangement is weak and piano waters it down even more. I was disappointed with the 2017 mix, this is even more so.
i love u2 but man this is really heartbreaking, where is the passion, people keep sayin but its not 30years ago, wll dont fukin include a song that needs full emotion. Same Trump's hairs color.
So? What makes that relevant?
Era solo per sottolineare il colore osceno dei capelli di Bono, ma stai tranquillo...tutto a posto!
bono man retire.
Ruairi O'Neill 👎
horrible version (considering the song's potencial). I was expecting something like the cover dream theater did.
Then they'd be imitating Dream Theater.
I meant with guitar, distortion, overdrive and more like the studio version... Anyway, diehards are hard to please. I hope it will get better by repetition and getting used to it.
Horrible face that you take me lol
I think the same. Shit version. Many covers bands sing better then this..and I don´t care if someone see this version as A FAVOR for us. This version is far far far far far away to be a good version.
Jota Oliver So you're holding them to their original album version? That's not unreasonable from your POV?
Terrible
Would you like bono 1987?This version is nice, not all songs sound so well live
Father Damien Karras Don't worry guys this king size dickhead comments on a few U2 vids..
Bono didn't even want to sing this in 1987
