great video..I find it touching that Man O' War's faithful groom, Will Harbut, died about 30 days before Man O' War died; some say from a broken heart. Truly, Man O'War "wuz da mostest hoss" as Will used to say... Man O' War....truly "he wuz da mostest hoss". I find it touching that Man O' War died about 30 days after his faithful groom, Will Harbut, who uttered those words, died..some say Man O' War died of a broken heart...
Just think, it will soon turn 100 years since Man O' War became champion and hero and there has been no other horse as close to perfection as Man O' War. Thanks for posting this priceless video.
I have a three year old registered Quarterhorse related to Man O War, I have had 4 trainers attempt to train him. I have pulled him early each time, as I did not feel the trainers were relating well with him. My gelding is an amazing horse.
I Had the privledge of seeing the great Secretariat and Man O' War was before my time but they have to be the 2 greatest horses of all time. However the horse with the biggest heart was Affirmed my favorite horse of all time.
There was article in the Blood Horse many years ago. I can't remember the jockey's name, but he had seen all the horses from Man o' War to Secretartiat and beyond. He stated, 'Man o' War was, without question, the greatest horse I have ever seen".
This is wonderful, new footage. He is SO amazing to look at, majestic! I love the first few seconds, you get a real good luck as he moves and turns his head toward camera, of his muscular shape and form. Beautiful !!
Along with Secretariat and Eclipse, this is one of the horses I would've loved see run live. He should've ran in the Kentucky Derby, so America would have 12 Triple Crown winners. Thoroughbred breeders should start breeding sturdy builds and strong legs like Secretariat, Man o' War and all those old time great horses had. Too many breakdowns on tracks these days..
Them were the days when horse racing was great. What an animal this horse was! He is totally beautiful also. Greatest of all time? Possibly. There are so many perfect equine heroes. They all want to make you shed a tear. A few other examples of great horses are Carbine, Ribot and Phar Lap. Like Man O' War, no one can doubt their greatness.
I grew up in Eastern Oregon on the back of an Appaloosa. Magnificent beings. They are still highly prized by the Cayuse, Umatillia, and of course the Niimíipu (Nez Perce for the uneducated). God's gift to humanity was the horse.
I just discovered that every one of my 7 horses has this amazing stallion within their bloodlines. He's in our broodmare who started our herd, and three of her foals. Two of her "grand" foals, one of them being our newest colt who has Man O' War on both sides, and then also my Oldenburg that is completely unrelated to our Quarter Horses. Thanks for sharing this video so his greatness may be acknowledged by all. :)
he is my BOY! Love him! Of course there is Secretariat and Ruffian....but before them came MAN O WAR! He is truly the king....he will always be...kudos to those who came after....but...MAN O WAR came first....he led the pack....
For many people who know nothing about horse racing, all you have to do is mention the name Man o' War,and they will know exactly who he was. He was an American icon. He was also a very influencial sire(contrary to some who critized Riddle for keeping him a private Stallion),Man o" War's blood is still instrumental in the modern Tb. That along with his race record makes him a true TB God.
Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Phar Lap and all the other champion Thoroughbred or Quarter horses were definitely fast, but I personally think Man O War could of out ran them all. He was like the foundation of all thoroughbred race horses. There will never be another like him.
I don't know who the "greatest ever" was. Impossible to compare horses of different era's. Man o' War, War Admiral, Citation, Secretariat, etc... Who's to say who would have beat who on any given day? But I do know one thing. Man o' War is the most magnificent looking beast I ever seen.
What impresses me so much is that Man O' War and Secretariat were winning on oats and hay. Horses these days get fed a diff ration of feed and still cannot out run horses years ago.
Pt.2 - "In my opinion the greatest of them all was Man o' War. I rode Upset when he beat Man o' War, the only time Big Red was licked. I laid a trap for him as he came up on the inside and I got him in a pocket. The rules forbid that today. If I had let him out of the pocket he would have won by six lengths."
a dear freind of mine .. had to put her horse down on new years Eve she was related to Man of war thru In reality she was only five years old and had a great season in Louisina last year-her owner had hoped to breed her this year... she had been treating for pneumonia.. and then got colic she put up a brave fight for along time i saw her run on Christams night.. she looked great.. its heartbreaking.. but watching this video made me realize whata great heart she had as well
This guy was awesome. He happened to have not run the derby which he wouldve won anyway, (and this was 1920 so there was no triple crown to go for yet til gallant fox) I go ahead and just add him to the list after sir barton.
It's amazing and a bit terrifying and euphoric riding a race horse in his racing gait. Like being on a locomotive! I had a manowar great grand baby and he was SO fast. Won a number of starts at miami before retiring as a hunter jumper.
I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE SECRETARIAT AND MAN O WAR COMPETE, I THINK HALF THE TIME MAN O WAR WOULD HAVE WON AND HALF THE TIME SECRETARIAT WOULD HAVE WON. MAN O WAR IS FOREVER REGARDED AS ONE OF THE GREATS, BUT SECRETARIAT BEAT ALL OF MAN O WAR'S TIMES. SECRETARIAT IS GENETICALLY RELATED TO MAN O WAR ,BUT TO ME SECRETARIAT IS THE GREATEST WITH MAN O WAR A VERY CLOSE SECOND. TWO KINGS OF HORSERACING.
@holybulz27 - Man o' War was primarily a frontrunner according to his PP's. A slow start can end up affecting frontrunners more than horses with other racing styles. Also, Upset was carrying 15 pounds less than Man o' War. Regardless, “Upset”, what an unintentionally prophetic name for a horse.
Pt. 1 - I don't know why this story is never mentioned but in the November 9, 1959 Sports Illustrated there is an article titled "The Question: Which Was The Greatest Race Horse Of All Time?" In it Bill Knapp, the rider of Upset (and the great Exterminator) gave this story - (please read Pt. 2)
I saw MOW's grave at the beautiful Ky Horse Park a few years ago.Tour the place someday and see the museum too.I wasn't able to see Secretariat's as you have to make a reservation to see the grave at the farm and we didn't have time. The farm is two some hrs from Lexington and we weren't gonna be in that area.:(
@Valkyrie91a At least Man 'O War and Secretariat are buried whole.I saw M O W's grave at the Ky Horse Park ten some years ago. They also had statues of the two big Reds and M O W was bigger.
LOL, he certainly has an air about him! You can tell by the way MOW stands with his head held high and something about his eyes that he thinks he is really something! I do believe he is a little bit conceited, LOL!
It is pointless (although at times fun) to argue about who was better than who. Man o' War's impact was felt all over the world. He played a part in Britain finally abolishing the ridiculous Jersey Act. Which basically made almost all US TB's non pure bloods in the British stud book. They finally gave in when US and French breds(they used some US blood) were coming over and winning top races in Britain. Funny thing was that was why they did it the first place, they feared we would clean house.
One quibble: at 1:29 a horse who's not Man o'War (who had a star AND a stripe) nuzzles a jockey who's not wearing Sam Riddle's silks, yet we're supposed to believe that this is Man o'War.
Carly, what is this from? ESPN or something? I don't see any of those rare RACING MOW films that I thought ESPN had access to. Also curious because some of this is misleading. It's safest to say MOW (and others) were left standing at the start in the Sanford, possibly backed up or skewed. Also, "older horses" is misleading as he only ever met Sir Barton once, the only elder. (He did win the JC Stakes for elder, but none entered the race.)
of Lexington, right? What is the name of his trainer? He looks familiar. Where was Secretariat trained again? Adding to stuff I need to look up. sigh...but kewlios!
Wonderful horse, great video, but I surely could have done without the image of the great champion dead in a coffin. Having just lost my own horse at age 35, I would much rather see them alive.
When you introduce a horse to a saddle, bridle, and rider. The term is unpopular due to its association with old cowboys (and being fair, many other types of riders), using very brutal methods of breaking in a horse, including starvation, lack of water, whipping, tying their legs together, and sitting on top of them while tied to break their spirit, and other types of abuse. It's also forgotten that the trainer who backed him (which is more appropriate now) had trained a lot of horses, including the Man O’War line, and knew if nothing else that abusing the horse would not work, also it would probably kill someone because horses like that just wait for revenge. He was also an expensive purchase (he was the fifth highest price at the auction), and not advisable to cause abuse. Most people like to say he was badly treated to cover the fact he just was extremely difficult to handle and hated the tack. He took it from his grandfather and passed the genes to his children. One famous tale is that one of his sons stomped a groom to death as a foal.
i just found in a book in an old book i got two articles about man o war one about his death (the day it happened) then one about the statue that was built in his honor please message me if u have an info on how much they might be worth i am just curious :)
@MelC54 Hoodwink was not a stakes horse. Probably not even an allowance horse. I heard he gave up before he got thorugh middle of the race, not sure. Nothing to bragg about beating a horse like Hoodwink I wouldn't believe.
My Hero when i was a kid, reading Walter Farley's books.
Man o' War must have been Fire!
i LOVE MAN O'WAR! I have a lot of books on him. I voted for him as horse of the century! Thanks for this!
I would have loved to see to see Man o' War in person. He is the greatest horse of all time!
great video..I find it touching that Man O' War's faithful groom, Will Harbut, died about 30 days before Man O' War died; some say from a broken heart. Truly, Man O'War "wuz da mostest hoss" as Will used to say...

When I drive thru Lexington I always see the Man O’ War Blvd. 😊
beautiful horse...I have been fascinated by him since I was a child...
Just think, it will soon turn 100 years since Man O' War became champion and hero and there has been no other horse as close to perfection as Man O' War. Thanks for posting this priceless video.
Thank you. I'd never seen this kind of footage of Man O' War. He was my first horse crush. :)
My horse has Man o' War in her bloodline and Secretariat :)

What a gorgeus, gorgeus big stallion he was. RIP Man O'War, you're always one of the greatest =)
Thanks much for posting this video.

My heart is so full of love and respect for this greatest Athlete and Equine hero of ALL TIMES

A great warrior and champion !
It is fun to watch the festive mood of the crowd . :)
Thank you very much for posting this fantastic footage cf :)

My TB is related to him :) her star it the exact same as his, it's cute. :)
great video! both of my horses are direct descendents of him.
my horse is his great great great granddaughter! they look EXACTLY alike!
What impresses me so much is that Man O' War and Secretariat were winning on oats and hay. Horses these days get fed a diff ration of feed and still cannot out run horses years ago.
I have the book "the most glorious crown" and it came with it. It's called "Win, Place, Show: The History of Horse Racing."
Man O' War was his great grandsire! He was the greatest!
Pt.2 - "In my opinion the greatest of them all was Man o' War. I rode Upset when he beat Man o' War, the only time Big Red was licked. He was the mostest hoss!
Hail this magnificant horse! Now he was an American Idol!!!!
Man O' War's grandson was the best :)
BEST VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN OF THIS INCREDIBLE HORSE!
Man "O" War was a beautiful horse!
Magnificence is motion.
This is why I love horse racing ^3^ Also one of my race horses are related to him. :3
And to be honest I almost cried at the end xD
a dear freind of mine .. had to put her horse down on new years Eve she was related to Man of war thru In reality
she was only five years old and had a great season in Louisina last year-her owner had hoped to breed her this year...
she had been treating for pneumonia.. and then got colic
she put up a brave fight for along time i saw her run on Christams night.. she looked great.. its heartbreaking.. but watching this video made me realize whata great heart she had as well
Wow, winning by 100 lengths?
This guy was awesome. He happened to have not run the derby which he wouldve won anyway, (and this was 1920 so there was no triple crown to go for yet til gallant fox) I go ahead and just add him to the list after sir barton.
Man oWar was great!! Hope someday i can ride a good race horse, but there will probably never be another horse a good as him.

if i can ever go back in time in my life im goin to see him run n im filming it with my HD camcorder... dont worry, ill bring it back ;)
is the loss to Upset where the term entered the sports terminology? Thanks for posting, was nice to see this great horse in action!
I saw MOW's grave at the beautiful Ky Horse Park a few years ago.Tour the place someday and see the museum too.I wasn't able to see Secretariat's as you have to make a reservation to see the grave at the farm and we didn't have time. The farm is two some hrs from Lexington and we weren't gonna be in that area.:(
MAN O WAR was ,,, is ,,, and will continue 2 be the greatest horse ever 2 set foot on this planet.......there will be none like him,,,,,,,
@Valkyrie91a At least Man 'O War and Secretariat are buried whole.I saw M O W's grave at the Ky Horse Park ten some years ago. They also had statues of the two big Reds and M O W was bigger.
Is there a second part to this? I would love to see the rest of it.
Talk about personality plus!
LOL, he certainly has an air about him! You can tell by the way MOW stands with his head held high and something about his eyes that he thinks he is really something! I do believe he is a little bit conceited, LOL!
@MelC54
and he also broke the track record in that "race" In reality he was in a race against the clock, and won easily.
It is pointless (although at times fun) to argue about who was better than who. Man o' War's impact was felt all over the world. My horse has him in his ancestry too :) Pretty cool :)

Hi,
"Breaking" a horse is an unfortunate term for teaching a horse to tolerate a saddle, bridle and a rider.
Best wishes
i live on man0war blvd lexington ky,
SOOOOOO much agree! he beats all of em' other horses! :D
The perfect horse
1919?? Wow, it never really occured to me he lived THAT long ago...
I have a decedent of man o war, man they look alike

What documentary did this come from? I would like to purchase it in it's entirety at some point.
His tail-male line is carried on today by Tiznow.
of Lexington, right?
What is the name of his trainer? He looks familiar.
Where was Secretariat trained again?
Adding to stuff I need to look up. sigh...but kewlios!
what race did he win by 100 lengths!?!
Wonderful horse, great video, but I surely could have done without the image of the great champion dead in a coffin. Having just lost my own horse at age 35, I would much rather see them alive.
Out of curiosity, is she fast when she runs? It would be very interesting to know what a horse with both of the greatest champs’ blood is like.
can someone tell me PLZ " whats breaking a horse"
thx
When you introduce a horse to a saddle, bridle, and rider.

God What a horse!!!!!

that's sweet..

@JaxRun That is a very well put comment.
@cf1970 i LOVE your videos
THE GREATEST RACE HORSE EVER!!
omg he's my mare's grandpa too! but like her great great great (lots of greats) grandpa lol
Too bad he didn't win the Triple Crown.
Some horse.
He may be fast but read he had attitude problems & was mean. Don't like that about him.
