Burundi and Rwanda, or...officially the Republic of Burundi and the Republic of Rwanda
Two small, bordering, landlocked countries in East Africa. Both in the African Great Lakes region. Burundi borders Lake Tanganyika, the second-largest and second-oldest freshwater lake in the world. And Rwanda borders Lake Kivu, a lake that is one of three known lakes to go through limnic eruptions. A limnic eruption is a rare type of natural disaster in which deep lake waters burst into a gas cloud that can kill any living creature near the lake. So if that ever happens, Rwanda would be very vulnerable.
Tensions have been high between the two for a few years now. However, even though the current leaders of both have been talking trash, the two countries have a lot in common.
For starters, they used to be part of the same kingdom. Ruanda-Urundi, which was once part of German East Africa, a territory ruled by Belgium between 1922 and 1962.

The person earning 700$ in Rwanda can pay school fees for his children, pay health services, buy a family cloths and put food on table and roof over their roof for a family in Rwanda. What other riches other than those do you need? All we work for is to get basic needs. Luxury life isn't richness. Richness is getting basic needs in life easily. And I guarantee you 90% of Rwandese have basic needs in life and that is enough for us. No need of luxurious life to judge poverty or richnes

Most of the poorest countries in the world historically were under the French/Belgian rule. Coincidence? I think not. Just French and Belgian were the keenest to extract their resources so they got nothing left.

Interesting. I've been in Rwanda once, never Burundi though. A few points:
1. Rwanda has low crime, one of the lowest in Africa. This is not just government propaganda, but also seen in the trusting nature of people, lack of reported thefts. Essentially no one was worried about pickpockets or random violence.
2. A possible reason why, but also showing how it is not really a democratic society is the level of security. Armed guards were common not just around embassies, government buildings and even some museums, but there was also luggage checks at hotels similar to airports, armed guard (private security) around ATMs and banks, and fairly heavy police presence.
3. The education was an interesting point, but one could also bring up technological investments which Rwanda has been developing rapidly. Not sure how it compares to Burundi, but they do compare strong with most African countries with the exception of South Africa and Nigeria.

BURUNDI has everything , food .... and they manage to survive for 6 years without any help aid from outside the country .But managed to organize themselves election. Burundi could have much lower unemployment because the population is so much less urbanized. Agricultural work is far less prone to unemployment but much more vulnerable to fluctuating crop prices. This is why heavily urbanized mixed/capitalist economies tend to have a much higher unemployment rate that can still be considered “full employment.” In the US today, that’s 4-5%, and anything less would be a labor shortage, but in a more rural population that would be considered a sign of economic crisis.
Holy crap, that's a really good point. I should have realized that! Yeah, the unemployment rate as an indicator can be incredibly misleading about a country's economic health.
Very interesting video. It was great working with you in this collaboration video. My aunt witnissed the Rwandan Genocide. She was located at a church near the Kivu Lake and saw horrible things. Later they were picked up by an international team via Congo. Her daughter (my cousin) visited Rwanda recently and noticed how closed the people were. Yet, Rwanda was very safe and clean.

Great video! I recently went to Rwanda and it is one of my favorite countries. The people are amazing and I never felt safer. Just a couple things, the Genocide Against the Tutsis lasted 100 days and the genocide was orchestrated by the Hutu government.
OtterDC Captain now the government is control by the Tutsis but the country is doing extremely well, economically speaking!

Rwanda joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 2009 despite having no historic links to the United Kingdom. Burundi has applied to join.

Another major thing is that Kirundi and Kinyarwanda are basically the same, kinda like British and American English.

Not exactly , it's not just the accent that changes . It's more like Portuguese and spanish..same roots I think...these languages are also similar to kiganda and other languages all the way to south africa

I had a friend who was a professor in Burundi stay with me for several months and it was very enlightening. He said many people settled old scores while the civil war was going on in the 90’s (he stayed with me in 1997) and that you could get someone killed for about US$300. He also said he lost a brother because he had chronic diarrhea as a child. When have you ever heard of someone dying from diarrhea? It may have been cholera or some other disease, but still it’s not something that happens in the West. He also said he was on a bus one day when it was stopped. A guy got on with a gun and ordered another man off and shot him right there. People in advanced Western countries have no idea how fortunate they are.

Being a Tutsi originally did not mean that you were richer than a Hutu. The groups started out more like castes that could be freely moved between with the Tutsi being cattle herders and the Hutu being farmers. Also, banana beer and wine is traditional to Rwanda as well and available there. Only a couple of minor errors besides that, still a very good video!

Let give you some context as a Rwandan; first let me just say we love our Burundian brothers, we basically speak the same language too.
So first off the history; the difference between tutsi and hutu in pre-colonial Rwanda was based on wealth which was measured primarily through cattle, this means that your status was not fixed as tutsi or hutu, only after colonisation was it contorted to serve the interest of the colonisers
Second; Burundi from all accurate accounts was birthed from Rwanda; 'urundi' means another, so Burundi in ancient times was mostly seen as another Rwanda it most likely became its own nation through war and dispute explaining the similar culture
It should be noted though; that at no time was Rwanda and Burundi unified as one Kingdom in pre-colonial times...Rwandans and Burundians come from the same people but they went to different lands(make sense)
Third; the figures for Rwanda's growth rate in comparison to Burundi in this video are incorrect. Rwanda has gdp growth of about 8%( 3rd in Africa) and the general level of development of Rwanda relative to Burundi is much higher...this is mostly due to how much more efficient Rwanda's government is and altogether both countries are much more beautiful that what was shown in this video, Kigali, Rwanda specifically is stupid clean!

Rwanda-urundi with it's capital usumbura was created for colonial purposes. Burundians where never rwandese at some point ,There are other kigdoms with whom we share similarities like the toro kingdom.

I'm gonna guess you're Burundian, (Hi there - I'm a friend from up North😄) if you've ever gotten any oral history from your parents or elders I'm sure they would've told you how in the earliest times; Burundians branched off to form another thing (see what I did there)

You got a few facts wrong, in burundi we also had other ethinc groups :Himas , Ganwas...Ganwas where the ones in power (kingship) in Burundi not tutsis and power was divide amongst Ganwa princes and important Families from every ethnic groups expect the twas and the himas. Obviously it did not fit the german's eugenics theories soo they changed it to what you described in the video. Rwanda has a different histrory I think. Interesting video none the less👍

Both countries are not growing similar rates, Rwanda has been growing on an everage of 7% GDP for the last 20 years, this year the World Bank and World Economic Forum put Rwanda among top 3 fastest growing economy in the world.

It feels like comparing Germany and Austria. "Both have" and followed by some random fact. The countries are separate entities, but their geography and people are very similar. In modern times they both have similar economies. The part where the comparison between Burundi and Rwanda is very different from Germany and Austria was at the unemployment rate "hold on, 1.5%? It is Genocide of Tutsi because it was prepared for longtime. Fortunately, now Rwandan are not distinguishing each other in tribes way, they all consider as one person. Shoutout to Kagame he is the man of vision, if you bring things like that in Rwanda you will end up in jail because things like that is ideological of genocide, that is how it began for leading to Genocide against Tutsi in 1994 by contrasting people. God bless Rwanda and Burundi.
