Two cities which, at first glance, seem very similar to each other. Although Seattle is an American city and Vancouver is a Canadian city, both are part of the same region, known as the Pacific Northwest, or sometimes known as Cascadia.
Both have a temperate oceanic climate known for their generally cool temperatures and rainy weather. While both have four seasons, it never gets too cold in the winter and never too hot in the summer. Both can get snow in the winter and get A LOT of precipitation from November through January. Yep, those three months are cold, dark, and rainy.
Both are in the infamous Ring of Fire, an area where lots of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions tend to occur.
Both have about the same population in the actual city limits. (V- 675,218, S- 724,745). However, Seattle’s metro population has about 1.5 million more people. (V- 2.5 million, S- 4 million) But you could say Vancouver is a bigger deal in its home country, as it has the 3rd largest metro in all of Canada, while Seattle has the 15th largest metro. Seattle has been the fastest growing American big city of the past decade.
While both are ethnically diverse, Vancouver is more so. 40% of Vancouver’s population is made up of immigrants. Around 28% of Vancouver residents are Chinese. It’s been called the “most Asian city outside of Asia.”
Both have low pollution and are environmentally friendly. Both have pledged to go carbon neutral by 2050.
I mean, overall both have a high quality of life, and thus...both cities are really expensive.
Which two cities should I compare next?
I got Seattle's minimum wage wrong. Its minimum wage is $15 in general. Employers can only pay $12 if they contribute at least $3 for health care and tips, and $16.25 for large corporations.

Haha that’s insane, I live in the state of São Paulo In Brazil and I took once 5 hours to cross the state. During my euro trip I took only 1 hour and half to cross the entire Netherlands. My fave country in the trip btw!

@?????? I think it got up to like 108 degrees at one point a few weeks ago. People from Arizona might be used to that, but that’s insane for people in Seattle, and to make it worse, lot of people in Seattle don’t have AC because it’s not usually very hot outside.

I live in Seattle. Once a while I'll have friends that are going to Vancouver. I don't even ask which one because I will just see from the photos. But if a friend ask if I want to go to vancouver with them, I always ask "BC?" to clear up the confusing. And ya its always been BC. I never been to Vancouver, WA.

I was born and raised in Seattle and I always felt right at home when I visited Vancouver. It’s a beautiful city and the people are great. Love it.
I was born in Seattle, and when I lived in Texas everyone seemed really mean. They had decorum/superficial politeness, but would get really aggressive and try to dominate if they perceived you as weaker.
Also, always implied im ditzy, and “not common sense smart.” I’m considered an intelligent woman at home 😑 maybe It’s cause im brown.. who knows lol.
I don’t understand when people say Seattleites aren’t friendly tbh. Never living outside of pnw again 😣 Seattleites and Vancouverittes complain without knowing how good we have it ❤️

I think the video is pretty representative. After living in both places. Style in Seattle: flannel, glasses, converse, grunge influenced, still stuck in the 90s. Vancouver: More European, more stylish, simple, hipster, and asian influences.
Lived in both. Currently in Seattle. Can confirm, the cities are both very similar and very different. I like them both, but do prefer Vancouver as it's a lot more walkable and a LOT cleaner.
And Vancouver has a smaller number of homeless people living on the streets.

The different liquor laws affected our family. A 19 yr Seattle resident came to Vancouver for a beer, maybe two, and now we have to go to Seattle to see our daughter & grandchildren

@@ImMamba Like I said, get a Nexus pass. Live in Vancouver, and since you'd be regular crosser, get Nexus express pass to avoid long border waits, work in Seattle, and return home using Nexus again.

Vancouverite, and I love Seattle too. Would be really really really really really cool if that high speed train thing happens to become a reality connecting our region. I think the Cascadia region could become a super-hub of tech and creative culture. Also it would be sweet if Seattle had an NHL team and we could get a good rivalry going on.

In Vancouver most of the waterfront is public park. In Seattle, most of the waterfront is private. You can walk around False Creek in Vancouver, quite a large distance. But you cannot walk around the perimeter of Lake Union in Seattle. The demolition of the Alaska Way Viaduct will help. But there will still be a large road along the waterfront to replace it in Seattle right next to the pedestrians which is not the case in Vancouver. A public waterfront is one of the features that makes walking in Vancouver more pleasant than walking in Seattle. I have lived years in both places.
i mean the lake union park, gas works and the park near sand point i forgot the name are not bad, but yeah there are more waterfront public space in Vancouver bc
Most architects and city planners in Canada are actually from Europe, where land use is at a premium everywhere, so you have to PLAN plan plan. American got sloppy, and even with the (obvious) example north didn't get it for decades. NOW Seattle, San Diego, are going high rise condo, land use, access to waterfront, but they're half a century behind. Arthur Erickson and the Bosa Bros., both based in Van. along with Jack Poole had to go south to show "how it's done".

@@joseaguilera9533 its no beach. Lake union like she said is a Lake not a waterfront. Even our downtown waterfront overlooks the puget sound and is not very walkable. You can go to the other side of Seattle, west Seattle and its extremely walkable. Plus there are beaches in West Seattle. I cannot accurately compare it to Vancouver but it looks like Stanley park but farther away and much much bigger. (from what Ive seen in the video)

I was born in Vancouver but live in Seattle. The cities are substantially similar except there is far more business in Seattle (10 fortune 500 companies are headquartered there) than in Vancouver (zero). Also there is more a focus in Seattle on the water (people regularly have boats) whereas Vancouverites usually look to the mountains (Whistler)
Exactly. Vancouver is a resort, not a real city. There's the obscenely rich; the ones serving them, who can barely afford rent with roommates (or live in a van); and there's the homeless addicts who are offered free drugs by the government, instead of help. Seattle on the other hand has some serious industry and more well-paid jobs.

Vancouver is my absolute dream place to move to from the UK. IMO its the most beautiful part of the world
I moved here myself from the Canadian prairies, many years ago, and I've never regretted it. I'd never live anywhere else. English Bay, the mountains, Stanley Park, cultures and cuisine from all over the world.... It's an expensive city, especially real estate -- but if you've ever walked down Beach Avenue on a sunny July afternoon, you know what heaven looks like.

Vancouver has much better urban planning than Seattle, making for a much more lively city. Seattle's not bad, but you drain so much life from a city when you build a 10-lane highway in the middle of it.

Yeah... but try and get to downtown Vancouver, and then leave.
I mean.. I guess it works for me. The traffic is so horrible that I take the Sky Train from the airport to downtown when I fly and usually park at a park and ride in Surrey if I have my own car and need to go downtown. But man it is ever inconvenient if you have to go off the Sky Train or Sea Bus. You can’t easily bus it to Stanley Park, or Granville Island, or Kitsilano, or to take a ferry.
Had to take a cab from Langley to YVR. Haven’t been that way in a decade. Take the #1 west (which was chockablock) to the new Port Mann Bridge... but get off onto this new section of Hwy 17 to go to the Alex Fraser Bridge. Cool.. neat.. because the HWY 91 east west connector is always the fastest way to get from east to west in Richmond as long as you can get to Richmond. But from 17 you need to go through two traffic lights rather than interchanges to get to the 91. It was gridlock. Each light change would get one or two cars through. You had one fricken job!!
2.5 hours. I literally could have driven 30 more minutes and made it to Sea Tac!!
Most Canadian cities are more liveable than most US cities. The States destroyed their cities when they put their 'freeways' through them.

Seattle is surrounded by water. The other side of the lake is where the rich people live. There is simply no place else for the roads to go.

Hi From Scotland I lived in Vancouver for 2.5 years and loved it!!! I visited Seattle several times and enjoyed it. At first glance I found the 2 cities very similar, but later started to notice the differences. Vancouver is much more like European cites, I noticed in Vancouver that people lived, worked and played in their city, the city centre was very busy in the evenings and weekend, like European cities. When I visited Seattle we tended to stay in hotels in the centre, but realised the city centre basically shut down in the evenings and weekends, and we had to get buses to other areas of the city to visit pubs, cafes, entertainment etc, which I found sad as there was some great places in the city centre we wanted to go to in the evenings but they were closed. This may have changed since 20 years ago, although I also lived in St Louis for 18 months and it was basically the same there, deserted city centre in the evenings and weekends, so seems to be a feature of big US cites. ...I don't know. I also found the food/ restaurants were much better, more varied and cheaper in Vancouver. Loved both cites, but if I had to choose, where to live again, i would pick Vancouver every time.

As someone that lives near Seattle, I can say that the last few years (since 2018 maybe?) we've had unreasonable amounts of snow. Like, I know people that got very close to a foot of snow in a day and a half. And that's been the case every time we get snow for the last 3 or 4 years. One year the snow stayed on the ground for a whole ass month.
Also live in Seattle but am from Spokane. Reading this I wanna say “suck it up, buttercup” so bad, but yeah I feel ya there. The roads here get horrible when the snow sticks and it sucks.
Working for a tow truck company that has locations in both Spokane and Seattle: Spokane gets more snow for sure, but when Seattle snows, all hell breaks loose!
@@BMXICANx462 yuuup. Even if there's just a freeze, all hell breaks loose. We had a really cold week back in February, and it got down to close to 15 Fahrenheit in the morning. Just sirens constant for an hour from first responders going to accidents. Even the road by my house was just COVERED in black ice

From what I’ve heard... it almost seems like Seattleites think Vancouver is bigger and fancier, and vancouverites seem to think Seattle is bigger and fancier 😂
Vancouver certainly seems bigger, not sure about fancier but that is probably just because it seems more contained whereas Seattle area is more spread out. Here you don't really hit country until after tacoma, everett, and redmond (or issaquah) so the sudden density of humans doesn't hit you as hard as when you go to Vancouver.

I lived in Seattle for 10 years and in Vancouver for 20 years both, and there are a few more differences that strike me. First, Vancouver has done a much job of reserving ocean shorelines for everyone by creating parks all over the waterfront. Second, Vancouver feels like a bigger city when you walk around in it. Third, Seattle has far more fresh water swimming access because of Lake Washington. Fourth, Vancouver drivers seem more polite. And fifth, Seattle has a significant Black population while Vancouver has a large minority who have emigrated from India. Both are delightful cities, and I love them both.

And now, Seattle has an NHL team with the Kraken set to play next year. In the same division as the Vancouver Canucks. So that should make for an interesting rivalry for Northwest Hockey.

Couldn’t agree more. Basically I have lived Seattle and loved it. However, 5 years and $10,000 in medical debt later (with good insurance) and they still won’t send me to a specialist without 2 more tests that I don’t have but it’s required..so I gave up cuz I can’t afford it. No point in falling in love if you just fall apart.
My friend with the same condition who married in Canada and moved to Vancouver misses the architecture and hills, but is much healthier and actually sends me some of their meds so I can feel better some days too. Wow kinda dark now that I look at the words.. no you definitely right.
Quite the opposite you would make more money working in tech or minimum wage in Seattle of course it's US dollar so you could visit Canada or anywhere else and the U.S. Dollar is always worth more. The minimum wage in BC will go up to $15 but that's only about $12.50 U.S. Pretty much everything is more expensive in Vancouver even with the dollar. Websites like Numbeo don't always give the full picture for cost of living u have to do your own research.
Vancouver doesn't really have that many large companies compared to Seattle, so it is harder to find good paying jobs. Vancouver has better architecture and scenery than Seattle does, so it would be a better place to visit. Additionally housing in downtown Vancouver is more expensive and it is harder to get around if you live outside the city itself or Richmond.
It is the opposite. Seattle offers better job opportunities and cheaper homes to buy or rent. Vancouver is more modern and sexy.
Seattle has WAAAAY more job opportunities. Canadian economy SUCKS --- coming from a Canadian.

Best thing Vancouver city ever did was to not build ugly, noisy, barrier, gridlock freeways!
Also, Vancouver hosted the 1986 world exposition, and has one of North America's largest Chinatowns, which is also a huge tourist draw along with Lonsdale Quay/Shipyards, False Creek, Commercial Drive Yaletown, and Queen Elizabeth Park to name just a few.
Also the SkyTrain in Vancouver is one the of the best transit experiences in the US and Canada. It is so much better than Seattle’s Link light rail. Seattle should’ve modeled their transit after the SkyTrain.
@@eriklakeland3857 unfortunately translink (the company that manages skytrain and other transit in vancouver) is currently underfunded so we don't have as much skytrain as we should

Seattle was the first city I visited in the States, and I was flabbergasted. It seemed to be a dream. It reminded me a little bit of Europe. Some neighbourhoods reminded me of London, actually. But then I started seeing dozens and dozens homeless people and beggars. They were everywhere. That was as if someone had thrown a cold glass of water on my face. The USA spends millions in building up an image of a superpower modern democracy, but the truth is that there’s a high percentage of their people living in extreme poverty.
Funny thing is I’m from Vancouver and watching this in Seattle.

I have lived in Vancouver for one month. Man did I go broke. I am living in Ottawa. It is not so exciting but lots more reasonable to live in. Yes Vancouver and Seattle are beautiful cites. British Columbia is called BC for a reason = Bring Cash and lots of it when you go there.

Except there's more to BC than just Vancouver, and once you get away from the Vancouver metro area, the rural parts of BC tend to have inexpensive housing. (Cost of land is the biggest variable in housing cost, and there's a _lot_ of land to go around in rural BC.)

Live in Bellingham so I'm smack dab in the middle and I've spent a lot of time in both places. My opinion on both:
Seattle: An amazing tourist town, awesome place to visit. The Space Needle, pikes place, Amazon building etc etc. One of the best tourist towns but it does get old after awhile and you do sort of run out of things to do. Great place to live if you're in software development as pay is almost as good as silicon valley but not nearly as expensive.
Vancouver: Not as good of a tourist city but grows on you over time. Like the person that's sort of boring at first but has a lot of depth. You will never run out of things to do. People are extremely friendly and also have that laid back west coast vibe going on.
Overall I love both cities but Vancouver wins for me :)

Love Bellingham. Vancouver used to be a laid back city back in the 80's. But since we felt the need to double the population, not so anymore. We must make sure all this scary overpopulation going on everywhere in the world, should be referred to as economic growth. That way no one notices.

I love Vancouver!! When i was in the Navy, my ship visited there in AUG 1987. We visited Seattle in AUG 1988.
I don’t know why but I started to laugh when Mr Beat said “folks immediately started sticking their chewing gum on the wall again.” I guess it was the way he said it! Also at the very end where he said "it feels like you're in a whole other country, because you are." I love these kind of videos with the comedic undertone. It makes the video fun to watch.

When I was a teenager we used to drive around the woods in a truck looking for grouse, jump out, then shoot them. It was really that easy. There was a spot on the trial we called "killer grouse corner" where one would fly up to the truck and try to attack us through the window. As a Vancouver native who is (unsurprisingly...) familiar with Seattle, the biggest difference I always feel is that Seattle is an integral part of the U.S.A., while Vancouver is its own little bubble largely alienated from the rest of Canada.
Seattle is a lot hotter in the summer.

Interesting to hear that perspective, as an American from the north east who has been to Seattle, I feel totally differently... Seattle always feels like a strange alternate universe version of America. It's in my experience a very separate place....crazy to think Vancouver is even more separate from her home country!
From having been to both places (and living in Montreal, spending quite a bit of time in the US Northeast and Ohio, and having been to much of Canada), I could indeed attest that Vancouver is utterly different from the rest of Canada and is in its own little corner along with Victoria and Vancouver Island. And yes, Seattle does feel quite a bit different from the eastern US - even the vernacular residential architecture in the Pacific Northwest is different from the Northeast and Midwest.

Definitely agree that Seattle feels very different from the east coast, but it feels fairly similar to the rest of the west coast (I also lived in LA and have family in SF). Strangely, the admission at 5:31 during the advertisement was the most informative part of the video for me. As an avid (or rather, passionate) reader of classics, memoirs, letters, historic literature, etc, I have wondered oftentimes how many teachers have actually _read_ the texts they teach, or do they simply read extracts in textbooks that they in turn teach out of textbooks? And if so, how long has that been going on? Awesome video! As a Vancouverite and also a follower of this channel for about a year now, it makes me happy to see you cover my home city. There’s a few things about Vancouver you could’ve touched on a bit more detail on though - we’ve also hosted Expo 86 which showcased the site of the worlds first driverless metro system in what is now the SkyTrain (part of our public transit, although it’s pretty outdated compared to other systems). The Waterfront area (Canada Place, Convention Centre) is also a great place to visit for tourists. Also, Grouse is pronounced with an “ow” sound... but other than that, very happy to see this.

Vancouver also has an NHL and CFL team while Seattle doesn't. But Seattle has a MLB and NFL team and Vancouver doesn't. But both cities have MLS teams.

I've visited Seattle for a week. decided to hop over to Vancouver to see what it's like for 2 days. I'd say Vancouver's a little better but then I got my rented-car towed over some stupid parking violation, so I'm gonna say Seattle's better out of spite. (they're both still pretty similar though). plus Seattle has the Starbucks Reserve - which was one of my favorite things when visiting

Love Seattle. One of the greatest cities in the US. Educated, urban, most beautiful landscape in the country, tons of high paying jobs, we have some of the most important companies in the world... the list goes on and on. It’s just awesome.

As one who lives on ceded Coast Salish lands just about smack dab in the middle between Vancouver and Seattle, it is intriguing to hear you pan the 'dark, wet winters' here. At the same time you perpetuate the stereotype that this is an undesirable region in which to live, 'I wouldn't recommend visiting both cities during that time' (November through January) you highlight that both cities are growing faster than, have cleaner air, and are more 'environmentally friendly' than other cities. Something in there doesn't compute.
Yes the PNW (Pacific North Wet?) is a varied and complex geographic region with a challenging history with regards to indigenous people and the environment. It is also a wonderful place to live, work, and recreate. Many of us who choose to live here embrace those aspects of the climate and geography that make this region unique. We interact with the environment as it presents itself to us, and adapt to the weather, hours and seasons of light and dark, terrain... and thrive!

At one time they probably would of been more similar, but Minneapolis is huge now and continues to grow in population and attracts alot of people, but no one in Canada wants to move to WINTERPEG, because its so damn cold...colder than the Minneapolis area

This was great. I'm a Seattleite looking to relocate. I've been a Portland resident (and loved it) and spent time in Vancouver (and loved it). One thing not addressed here that I've noticed and would love to see discussed somewhere: the Seattle Freeze isn't replicated in Vancouver (or Portland) in my experience or, from what I can tell, most people's. I've found Seattle VERY difficult to connect with, in terms of finding friends, and that was not my experience in Portland; Vancouver seems to be as friendly as most Canadians are rumored to be. I made more friends in two weekends in Vancouver than I've made here in Seattle in five years! If there's anything I'd fix about Seattle, it's the icy professional sheen most people have here, and the expensive healthcare. I'm not alone in that, if the Seattle Times is accurate; a lot of people seem to leave here because they find it as lonely as I have. Seems like both issues will change if I head up north a bit, but I'd love to see someone address it directly.
Have been in Seattle about the same amount of time as you (at least you from 8 months ago...). At this point my conclusion has been that its the stress and time suck of working at places like Amazon and Microsoft on people's mental health. These places deliver a lot of good things to the world, but it comes at a price. For a lot of people that "icy professional sheen" is merely all they can do, to hide the just-trying-not-to-drown that's happening underneath.

Yeah I messed up that. It's really disheartening that I can't seem to make it through an entire video without making one mistake. Being a one-man show, it can be difficult to get it all 100% right. I did have three different people read over the script, but apparently all three people missed that. When I can someday afford it, one of the first jobs I will hire out to is a fact checker.

The rainy season in Seattle is more like Jan - March. Nov still fairly dry and Dec gets wet more at end of month into Jan. According to a local Master Gardener site PNW is also considered a type of Mediterranean climate because of its mild weather.

The city of Seattle reminds me of a Nickelodeon sitcom called 'iCarly'.
I was stationed south of Seattle in the mid 80s. I quickly fell in love with the area. I would drive up to Vancouver occasionally with friends. I always wanted to return and stay,. You're correct, I felt like that whole area was a different country.

I lived in Seattle for three years. I miss it, my wife and I might move back to the PNW but we couldn’t afford Seattle. If you don’t make a tech worker salary there it is hard to afford. Seattle has really changed from 2000 to 2010s.

You know there are great cities outside of the Seattle area with affordable housing.
I've made it work on a salary of $26k. It's hard though because there's a culture of spending money here - expensive restaurants are way more normal than I'm used to, for example - that hasn't been the case in other cities (most of which had an artistic underclass that I'm used to hanging with - those guys can stretch a dime). But if you find a small place outside the center of the city, and you cook at home, and you keep most things in walking distance, you should be fine. Just don't buy things you don't need.

I'm from Vancouver and all my mom's family is from Seattle. They do have similar feels. Coffee culture. Emphasis on outdoor activities. Vancouver is more scenic (in my opinion) because of its proximity to the mountains. But Seattle probably has a smaller problem with homelessness.
The biggest difference between the two countries is really the difference in culture between the US and Canada in general.

“Safe”. I went there once in my life and my car got broken into, they stole a lot of records, my passport paperwork, they broke both the drivers and passengers windows, and snapped the neck of the pet canary in my car. This was at a Costco, which has a pretty good reputation here in the US

@@2hot4u97 there is tons of petty crime like that in Vancouver (having your bike stolen or window smashed is a right of passage), but almost no violent crime especially compared to any American city. sorry about your bird though, that's really heartbreaking, poor canary :(

I live in Burnaby but grew up near Winnipeg pal. Not sure about the not too hot in summer thing, it was blazing crazy hot for me this year
