I learned how to do Corey's vol. 3 scream through a lot of trial and error, and can confirm it's something else entirely when it comes to screaming. It's like yelling really loud at the back of your head, using your soft pallet as a guide you can get some crazy high distorted screams. It's kinda like yelling in your mix voice with tonnes of compression. It's crazy.
@@Hackerpro-qw2ls I mean, the Iowa and Self Titled screams will fuck you up. There is barely any technique whatsoever, just a guy mad at the world screaming his guts out. Chris I’ve been really getting into Stone Sour and some early slipknot because of this video! I’m not in the heavy-metal vocals for myself as a vocalist but I do like the grit that Corey Taylor hats. One of my other favorite vocalists was Ed Kowhlyck from Live! I’d love to see an isolated vocals or study on his vocal chops!
Having just seen CMFT in concert last night, this was a timely video! I've gotta say (what I've gotta say), the man is a machine... 90+ minute set, barely a pause between songs, and full vocal power and quality throughout. Also machine-like in the very precise and consistent way he positions his head and shapes his mouth for various vocal qualities (clean/yell/etc) and vowel sounds.
I love your videos Chris. You and Ken Tamplin are the BEST coaches out there. I watch both your videos all the time and I've learned so much. Chris Liepe+ Great video, with a very original take and explanation. I have some tapes of Corey singing/screaming I recordes back in 1999/2000 when we were driving around Detroit in my car. I will post them in the next few months. Im glad professional vocal coaches have taken notice of his talent. I dont think anyone can touch his screams, its a proven miracle that his voice never goes out on tour, or while recording. Interesting note, far as I know, Corey's 5 ½ octave voice is the widest vocal range or any male singer, aside from Mike Patton who is said to have a 6 octave range. Thanks again for the video!

Hi Chris! Awesome video as always! Since you mentioned throat singing, blending fry, I'd like to just raise the a subject that I never saw here in the channel (might not fit, but, it's pretty interesting) which is singing subharmonics, "easily" providing a bonus octave below our lower notes. Geoff Castelucci would be a reference for that. More versatile singers like Mike Patton make use of that as well for crazy low notes! :) I had a lot of fun with that and, good part is that although it needs a lot of practice, your neighbors won't hate you! lol
Loving this isolated vocals breakdown series, there's so much to sift through between actual singing, arrangement and production techniques. I'd personally love to understand better Devin Townsend's trademark "wall of sound" vocal layering.
Thanks heaps for these breakdowns Chris! They've really helped in working out what techniques exist and how to begin practicing them in a healthy way. I did my own mini Slipknot concert for my Twitch stream (vod also hosted on my RUclips channel) and I don't think it would have been as good as it was without your vids to help. Definitely still some things to learn too like the yelling, that seems super easy to get wrong. Keep up the awesome work!!

Glad you enjoyed my originals! :) Ya, I try to just let my other stuff be discovered... Talking too much about "me" on the channel missed the point. this channel is about YOU and your voice ultimately !
4:49 that was actually a subharmonic note, not fry! That’s way cooler imo! What you did was the classic octave jump. If you play around with it you can go REALLY low into the first octave.
Compare the vocals on this album to Iowa, sounds quite different. When he went back to the lower screams on All Hope Is Gone it sounded like he was able to scream correctly and not blow out his voice.
Wow these isolated vocals were awesome to listen to. Never would have guessed how much clean harmony he was using, almost to a theatrical Queen extent… except in a horror context lol. I just tried doubling my vocals in one of my choruses to get a Dave Grohl type sound after watching that video you did for recording revolution. Might have to try some layering next
Great job achieving that while sitting down! 👏🏾 those vocal performances are 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 and to be able to really lean into them, you almost always need the need the space to be 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 and get the whole body into it. It's part of the delivery. If you're talking about putting fingers through your eyes, you're REALLY GOING IN ON THAT! Lol I think that's also part of the secret sauce, I don't want to call it acting, but 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 it when you say it, even for a moment. It's almost allowing yourself to be bipolar and accessing those two personalities: the subdued side, and the devil you keep inside lol
everytime I watch those video I catch myself experimenting with my own voice. :D Very interesting stuff. There are a variety of ways you can use your voice. I love Corey Taylors screams although I am actually a fan of high pitched screams (fry screams). His scream has something unique. When I do screams I am also more familiar with fry screams. I can do false cord screams but for my voice they are more straining than fry screams.
This is making me realize with more practice I can probably do decent screaming. Corey has a very good voice, but this makes me realize a decent amount of the magic is production and layering too. Not to take anything away from him
Really great video man, love it! Also as a bonus I learned from the comments here that I can do some throat singing (it's not nearly as difficult as I thought it to be!)
This was really helpful, Id like to make some sort of trap metal but I still struggle to do the "screamo" voice and this helps to make a better vocal overall
Thanks for the breakdown, it's always very interesting to watch those Just a short remark: I believe, there's the hard compression you're missing in the chain
That hard compression/limiting is actually happening on the way in via my manly core reference channel strip. It has a built in opto compressor followed by a FET limiter. Its amazing!
Hey Chris, Im learning a lot watching your vids, and I have to say i'll love to watch a vocal analysis of Joe Duplantier from Gojira! Cheers from Brazil!
It sounds to me like he might have been laying down on his back, maybe with something under his head, for those subdued vocals. That restricts air flow and throat opening but allows some relaxation. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey chris, i love your videos and you attitude towards singing! It helped me a lot developing my voice and i Wanted to thank you very much for that :) I would like to request a song in which the vocalist does impressive things: "Drown" by Banks Arcade. Really grateful for these tutorials, Please do Serj tankian next!!
Awesome breakdown Chris!!!
Lol
I think that's also part of the secret sauce, I don't want to call it acting, but 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 it when you say it, even for a moment. It's almost allowing yourself to be bipolar and accessing those two personalities: the subdued side, and the devil you keep inside lol
I just learned so much! Great video, Chris!
You are awesome for doing this analysis
You make me love music in a different way omg your great 👍🏻
everytime I watch those video I catch myself experimenting with my own voice.
Nice as usual! Your work is great Chris, thank you. Greetings from Brazil.
This is making me realize with more practice I can probably do decent screaming. Corey has a very good voice, but this makes me realize a decent amount of the magic is production and layering too. Not to take anything away from him
Exactly!! Production does a LOT for what we think is just a voice!
when you broke down the “ache” reminded me of an old italian guy
haha
Really great video man, love it!
Also as a bonus I learned from the comments here that I can do some throat singing (it's not nearly as difficult as I thought it to be!)
This is such a comprehensive analysis!!! Loved it
Dude. This is my second watch from you (just watched Static X push it before it). You legit earned a sub. SUBSCRIBED.
I got some insight from this video into how I can sing and record some spoken verses on heavier parts of a rather dark song of mine. Thanks
Fuck, I love corey's hyperdrive singing 🤩
This was really helpful, Id like to make some sort of trap metal but I still struggle to do the "screamo" voice and this helps to make a better vocal overall
Wow very interesting production lesson!!!!! Dope this helps in so many ways...🔥
I allways thought Corey's voice was broken during the album because the way it sound a lot louder compared to Iowa (my fav album).
Tremendously helpful breakdown! 🤘🔥🙏
Dude, you're fire! Loved your analysis!
Thanks for the breakdown, it's always very interesting to watch those
Just a short remark: I believe, there's the hard compression you're missing in the chain
“Slowly stops the egg”
I’m not gonna bacon
*edge*
Fantastic work! Great video!
working on a cover for this song after watching this video hahaha great video as always Chris
Hey chris, i love your videos and you attitude towards singing! It helped me a lot developing my voice and i Wanted to thank you very much for that :)
I would like to request a song in which the vocalist does impressive things: "Drown" by Banks Arcade. I would really like to hear your thoughts on this one and your analysis! But of course only if you like to do it :))
Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out!
Be cool to see you do more killswitch engage
That slowly stops the egg :) - nice approach dude, sounds close
These are so much fun!
Btw has an artist ever reached out after seeing one of your break downs?
Slipknot is the best Band for me 😃
Like the new intro in the corner!
How the hell did you manage to get isolated tracks from Slipknot? Or is this just a cut up version through Izotope or something?
