- In this romance, a lovely young debutante falls in love with a jazz violinist. Her mother wants her to marry a wealthy young man, but the strong-willed girl initially demurs until the night of her debut. Her social adviser fills the debutante’s dance card with partners, which inflames the violinist.
Frances Dee was married to Joel McCrea when this movie came out. They were married for 57 years when he died. Gorgeous & happy couple.
I hope they were happy.
Thanks for sharing this movie. Seeing Nigel Bruce in an uncharacteristic role is a treat. Alison Skipworth, Jessie Ralph and Harry Green is an added bonus.
And Gene Raymond and Mrs. Joel McCrea !
WONDERFUL hidden gem, all my favourite character acting ,Nigel bruce and Jessie Ralph together was magic.
Thanks for curating a fabulous playlist of pre-code films. Keep it up!
Love this sweet innocent love story ! Thank you for a taste of the wonderful past .❤️🙏🇨🇦
No disrespect intended: This film was made during a global depression, Jim Crow flourished in the southern US and Hitler was appointed Chancellor in Germany. Just a few of the occurrences in that “wonderful past”. Nostalgia is a mental trap that is mostly untrue. Looking back is counterproductive to a happy life in the here and now.
The reason I love pre-code movies: more honesty, deeper stories mixed in with message. Sometime the good guys and the bad guys aren't as well defined. Class distinctions means different rules, different friends. Someone is given a reputation if they aren't in the top class. Someone has a protected reputation if born right. I get so tired of the movies because we know what will happen, the tale has been told so much. The bad guy can't win, the poor girl turned wife who has a child can't leave (without leaving her child with them). In this film, we see that both sides come with complications, expectations, and no way to turn except inside. She suffers in silence, does the best as she can while waiting to see who she ends up with because it's clear that's not her choice. Our heroine was not treated well by any of her men in my opinion. Both deputante and struggling artist say they never intended to fall so deeply in love. I guess they knew ahead of time their choices would be hard. Thank you for the movie, really engaging. I'll watch it again.
Dee deserved an Oscar for this. She is not only compelling at every but makes us care, draws us in. Her beauty is exalted. Who does not want to adore such a woman. This film simply astonishes.
I may have never witnessed a more consistent display of the fineness of love by an actress from one scene to the next. Never a flutter or a falter. Dee must played herself
Tres magnifico...splendid extraordinarily exquisite..never seen so many white minks... the worst minx is the scoundrel who knows not himself nor the damage he lives and lies with, himself.
Loved it 🇬🇧
At 25 Dee had mastered female ways to perform. The greatest ones direct everything from their eyes. Here, she overwhelms. Tell me I am wrong.
This film rises above all sentimentality, which is seemingly impossible. The trials of young love. Reckless abandon threatens everything. This film shows us two characters who must prevail, or we are all lost somehow. Love had better conquer all for our sakes.
I didn't think dial telephones go back as far as the early 30s. There are some films from 1940 that I've found on the Internet where Bell Telephone representatives explain how to use their (presumably) newly introduced dial telephones.
I must add. To the last moment her acting is consummate perfection.
A wonderful movie with a great cast. I rate this a 9.
WHAT A MOVIE, WHY WAS JOY, SO UPSET? I GUESS A REASON. WELL DONE NOT MENTIONING THE TRUTH. GOOD MOVIE. THANK YOU.
Interesting....and here all along, I thought I was pretty smart. Well...this film pre-dates the concept of the notion of reality. Thank you for sharing.
It is clear to me that when Francis Dee smiled she lit uo Hollywood from top to bottom. A more radiant beauty never was.
Couldn’t watch because Raymond’s in it but I love Frances Dee
This is the silliest movie that I've ever seen. No woman would run off and marry a man that she didn't love on a whim like that. I never would, and neither would my grandmothers have done such a thing, and they were the same age as the young people depicted here. We come from privileged backgrounds, made our debuts, etc.-----but we had emotional strength, and would never have conducted ourselves like these pitiful characters.
With Frances Dee, gene Raymond.,Alison skipworth and Nigel Bruce- a lonely young debutante falls in love with a jazz violinist, her mother wants her to marry a wealthy man,but the strong-willed girl demurs until the night of her debut! Her social adviser fills her dance card with partners which enrages the violinist!! I was surprised to see Nigel Bruce-Dr Watson in the Sherlock Holmes movies 🍿 without a moustache! Gene Raymond was in the musical 🎵 going to rio with Fred Astaire and ginger rogers- which was their debut in as a duo! The flick was good 👍!
🔵A MOVIE WITH NO ENDING.🔴
Love Pre_Code 🎬 MOVIES FRANCES DEE AND GENE RAYMOND ARE A LOVELY PAIR!!
If you heard that title today ...
Try actually living through this and you won't be entertained by it.
Did Frances Dee marry Joel McCrea?
She did! On October 20, 1933. They were happily married for more than 50 years, until Joel's death in 1990. He died on October 20, 1990 aged 84, on the exact day of their wedding anniversary (it would be their 57th year together). Ms. Dee passed away in 2004 at age 94.
The McCreas owned a ranch and raised cattle. So Joel truly was a cowboy. And Frances did her share of hard work on the ranch and raised a few children as well.
Can’t believe I sat through this movie that could barely be heard....
There is a control in the bottom left of the viewing screen area. Set that at the maximum. There is a second control in the bottom right of the full viewing screen . Use that to adjust to your liking.
@@leelarson107 Tried everything, believe me. Not sure what the problem was with this film's audio in particular. Twas very odd.
Such a great movie thank you so much
Frances Dee was charming and a very accomplished actress. She was excellent in The Silver Cord... I enjoyed her more than Irene Dunne. ❤
🔵FRANCES DEE IS VERY CUTE. I LIKE HER ALSO IN THE 1935 MOVIE 'THE GAY DECEPTION' ALSO STARRING THE ACTOR FRANCIS LEDERER.🔴
Yes he would be an actor!!!!!doh!!!!!!
In her debutante gown she is a Joshua Reynolds.
Dreadful song just after the hour mark.
And Jessie Ralph !
Jesse Lasky split from Paramount and made this one at Fox, which was also in financial trouble at the time.
I never watch this film. Thanks!
Can you hear it?
I Cant Believe That's NIGEL BRUCE!!
No that's Jessie Ralph you are looking at.Nigel Bruce is a man with a moustache!lol
Francis is seeing Chris Hansen. To catch a predator all those years ago.
❤
All too tragically fatal in most cases.
And I just knew she was going to die in a devastating car crash with the sot. Sorry if I blew the ending for someone who reads the comments before they watch...
🌬💀🏴☠️
The ending wasn’t what you thought it would be - the girl didn’t get killed- but she had a nervous breakdown and she was reunited with the violinist at the end of the movie!! 😮😮😮😮
cant hear
