The nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll were bad, too. They didn't have the means to keep the soldiers safe. It wasn't an experiment on the soldiers, they were just collateral. One of my uncles was there for the testing of the first nuke with solid/dry fuel. They didn't give anyone time to get to safety before detonation. They were just told to turn their backs to the explosion and to cover their eyes with their hands. My uncle told me that even doing that, he could see the bones in his hands when it went off. He died of leukemia from that, about 18 years ago. And the gubment denied any responsibility for decades, and when they finally owned up to it, they did so VERY quietly. There's a fund to compensate still-living vets or their children with a modest sum of money as an apology.

I'm so sorry for your loss even if it was a while ago. That sounds so crazy how he could see the bones. I heard even if you cover your eyes, it's impossible to not see the explosion.

    Operation Plumbbob:
A plumb bob is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a vertical direction as a reference line, or plumb-line. It us made of stone, wood, or lead, but can also be made of other metals.
The instrument has been used since the time of ancient Egypt to ensure that constructions are "plumb", or vertical. It is also used in surveying, to establish the nadir (opposite of zenith) with respect to gravity of a point in space. It is used with a variety of instruments (including levels, theodolites, and steel tapes) to set the instrument exactly over a fixed survey marker or to transcribe positions onto the ground for placing a marker.
Thank God for engineers and surveyors.

Gandalf was actually killed by the Balrog.
Thats why he is sent back as Gandalf the White, who is a loy more powerful than he was as Gandalf the Grey. The Valar decided to create another body for him and send him back since he was the only Wizard who was actually doing their job.

I went to school in a school/fall out shelter!!! I believe it was the 1st in America! It was called Abo Elementary School/Fall out Shelter located in Artesia, NM. You can fund a video about it on RUclips! Hope you check it out! It is no longer used as a school but used for federal training. It is completely under ground, coolest school ever!!

I don't remember which relative remembers seeing the glow and feeling the ground move, probably my uncle because he was in the military and spent in time in that area. I wasn't around or aware. Incredibly ignorant and using our troops as guinea pigs. " Here, hide in this ditch, what could go wrong?"

At least the folks in the films volunteered to be there (George excepted) and were given some pre-film training (not terribly useful, but still). This is from an NPR story in 2010.
None of the service members got any extra pay to get nuked. It is the military way. Alternate Sun, no problem just give me some Grunts. Army for life.
Nevada used to use see a nuke for tourism in the 1950s.
(America dropped the nukes to have fun. I think after like 10 drops they had the data they wanted, and just were playing with the biggest firecracker they could get away with).

Quick note...one thing that Fat Electrician is a little bit off on is that the Germans put the first manmade object in space with the launch of a V-2 rocket to an altitude of 176 kilometers on June 20, 1944. So no matter what happened to the manhole cover, it was definitely never going to be the first manmade object in space. It is also possible that he is just thinking that the manhole cover would have gone into orbit, which it would not have...but it just proves he is still human and can make mistakes. LOL
