Building a PC for the neighbor's kids

  • I thought this would be short, but alas, I was mistaken! This PC went to two younger kids that live at the same apartment complex that I live at, and thankfully they loved it! I'm hoping to surprise them around thanksgiving with an SSD upgrade, to help the PC feel a lot snappier
I hope you all like this brief look at hardware that is, well, a bit newer than my usual!
Also, I have opened up a Patreon! If you'd like to help support the channel, feel free to drop by! I post behind the scenes content there, as well as unedited versions of the sped-up parts of the videos! Paid supporters will get a shout-out at the end of every video, thank you all for your support!

After spending hours upon hours of windows updates on a budget pc for a family member even with a kingston SSD, I said, we're switching to Ubuntu Mate now and you're not going to complain. These days people are so damned picky that it's seldom worth doing. Kids, however, are generally easy, I just poke 7 on them with something to get them on the net and a cheap controller so they can use nesticle and other easy going console emulators. Getting cases with missing panels are very common. I just get some plexiglass to cut to size with some hinges and fusion paint to hide the edges. BTW, there is no such thing as "too old," especially if ya give them some games for the system that keeps them busy.

I gave away my old Athlon's and Pentium 4's and IDE stuff for free with DDR ram and that fun old stuff, the recycling place here wants you to pay for the items you bring in which is dumb, so threw it all in a box and listed them for free.

@@unknownhuman2012 That is a good idea, I haven't tried that before. This one was going to some kids though, although I absolutely want kids to learn how to use Linux and other alternatives, perhaps not on their only PC lol. Maybe I'll put together a second system for them to learn Linux on!

I would have cleaned that heatsink and fan too, you can see the tar on it, whilst your doing that might as well re-paste the CPU.
Typical PC build though, nothing is straight forward! 😆

I had *mostly* cleaned the heatsinc and fan a month or so ago when I initially tried to sell the PC, they were absolutely completely clogged up, and I repasted the CPU then. I should have cleaned the fan further, but I didn't think about it, or think to mention it in the video. Next time this sort of build happens, I'll make sure to mention previous work!

@@LowSpecActionSquad If this board really came from a smoker's household, I just hope it doesn't stink? That would be really bad if it's going to run in a kid's bedroom.
