- Box art, posters, marketing material in general, they say something about the intentions and emphasis of a work. Today we study what Nintendo decided to highlight in the Super Mario Box Arts, specifically which characters are the most important in the series.

The official stance of CMeeCraft Gaming is that fake blocks from Super Mario 3D Land are mere objects unworthy of being counted as a character. However, IF you were to consider them as a character, they'd have 1 appearance giving them a tie for 28th most appearances. Their weighted score would be 0.95 placing them between Co-star Luma and Plessie.
If you do another one of these videos, I was initially thinking the Zelda series since it’s the logical next step considering your channel, but I realize a lot of the box art from older games don’t feature much, so my thinking is that Sonic should be the next logical step. Though I don’t think I’ve seen you play Sonic.
@@YoloYester94 he could do the Kirby franchise because the box art of those games shows a lot, including characters
What are you talking about, invisible blocks are on All the covers
@@Ch1mpens fake blocks are the guys that look like blocks with eyes. Invisible blocks are... Invisible.
George Michael Bluth would be disappointed at your dismissal of the fake block.
Objection: Counting the swarm of fish as 46 appearances would be like counting both Mario and Luigi as the same character because they're both human. Instead, each of the ~46 fish should have counted as one appearance and had their own spot on the ranking.
So there should be the koopas divided in koopas and paratroopas, and goombas divided in goombas, paragoombas and tanooki goombas for example
But then it would only be fair to the same for every other character that isn't one of a kind
That would be a very long list. And it’s not like Mario and Luigi only appear together which the swarm of fish in their one appearance do. I do like this idea though.
It should count for each NDC citizen too, then
Normal fish is now officially more important than Peach
And now the real question: which is more ecologically important, fish or peaches?
@@StarshadowMelody i mean, the creatures that roam the ENTIRE ocean (and are a very important part of the food chain) or a singular type of sweet fruit, obviously its the fish
Weirder still, Tatanga is officially more important than Bowser!
Literally never even noticed the words on the sunshine box
I’ve never noticed the Boo on the M64 box art 😭
ive seen it multiple times, again and again, heck i even have the box at home... but i swear, that ive never ever noticed those words lmao
As somebody who loves to look closely at all the details on box art for some reason… I actually noticed the words and feel called out in this video lmao
Guys let's give him a break!!!
The fake brick block was just too difficult to find, it's its entire job after all.
The camouflage was too strong. (Also I've never played 3D Land so I didn't realize a block based enemy was a thing 😅)
@@CMeeCraftGaming It was a game I played religiously as a child, was so bummed out when I lost the cartridge, I feel it still holds up today, and it's sad it's not really talked about.
But yeah I understand, I mean, the hills have eyes but they're not enemies, so I get what you mean!
@@Gemarald"as a child"? How old are you? How old am I!?
@@blau6832 bro 3D Land was released 13 years ago
I’ve played 3D land, and I do not remember that
the text on the sunshine box art is both practically unreadable and genuinely incomprehensible
The fact that Daisy appeared on a non-rerelease box art but Wario didn't.
Real human arm got robbed of a spot on the list
What's funny is that there's a zoomed outversion of the 3d World artwork, and Bowser is JUST out of view from the box.
Oh my god XD
To be fair, normal fish saved marios life at least 20 times so the recognition is deserved
Huh? When?
What even?
@@TyGuy2462cmon you know what fish do
@@moosesues8887 They swim?
Am I missing a joke here?
5:52 I can't believe you would blatantly ignore the appearance of iconic mario enemy "fake block", clearly distinguishable by its open eyes
wait where is it i cant see it
@@NoobyTheGamer above the "o" from "mario"
@@moodle6500 They were making a joke about it being camouflaged
@@gferrol118 I see, it is not always easy to spot sarcasm in text
Luigi: Had to wait 30 years after his first game appearance to be on a box art.
Yoshi: Be on the box art of his first game appearance.
Nintendo clearly being Luigiphobic during many years.
can’t believe you didn’t count invisible bowser. he shows up 274 times, he’s just really hard to see
I am so surprised that Daisy and Peach have the same number of appearances.
It's amazing how Bowser is literally only on the Mario Maker art
Can't spoil who the villain is on the box art.😉
Bowser's fury literally exists (and cmeecraft forgot about it)
@@Queen_Of_Discord He said at the beginning that he's excluding remakes and re-releases. He probably counted Bowsers Fury as a re-release since it can only be played from the 3d world port on switch
Doesn't the Japanese art of SMB1 have him
The extended version of the sm3dw box art has him but not the actual box art we got
Everyone’s talking about him missing the fake block but no one’s talking about him missing the saw on the SMG2 box, or the fork person from that one kingdom in Mario Odyssey
This exactly!
I've been a big fan of Nornal Fish since their first appearance. I am so glad they got the recognition they deserve.
I wonder how different the scores would have been if the Japanese box art was use, for example, the Japanese box art of Super Mario Bros. has Peach, Bowser, two Toads, and 9 different enemies.
So happy that "Normal Fish", my favorite Mario character, is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
There's only two appearances of Mario in the SMM artwork. Two of them are afterimages, so unless you wanna count shadows (effects of light), there's only two.
Also Goomba Toad in Wonder is just Toad. It's like a power up, he isnt controlling a Goomba, he just is one.
8:16 You turn into a goomba in SMB Wonder by touching certain wonder flowers, not by taking the body of an existing goomba like you do in SM Odyssey. Therefore, I don't think the SMB Wonder goomba should be counted.
It's still a depiction of a Goomba though
6:32 technically it's only 2 Mario's but I guess it works
I have seen only one other video mention the Sunshine words. It didn't have many views, so it makes sense why no one else found it.
2:53 I guess I'm not part of the history of mankind, because I actually did read that when I got the game lol.
You will be erased in 5 business days
@@lucas_br9592 NOOOOOOOOO--
I wonder what a ranking based on the size they appear on the box art would look like.. Like, adding up the total pixel count of each character
what is nintendo's obsession with putting goombas coming out of pipes
Seriously. They don't even do that that often in the actual games.
it implies that you can do that in the games for new players ig
Can't believe you would do my boy Block With Face so dirty like that in the 3D Land box art
What about the 3D Land fake block? Note the eyes on one of the blocks.
I can’t get over “normal fish” im dying here 💀💀💀
Just you wait, next game those pigeons are gonna be the main partner saving mario from countless dangers.
11:20
Imagine getting outclassed by “Witch” as the main villain
It’s crazy how closely you analyze the box art, even reference places in game for some of them!
Wait! Blud gave them a weighted GPA lmao!!
The fact that there’s a chance that with a recount normal fish might be more important than Luigi
Yesss I love these random super specific Mario statistic videos
I knew noko bombette was more important that bowser, people kept saying i was wrong
We all knew it in our hearts to be true.
loved how you spelled "pranha plant."
There are more octoombas on Mario mod art than Luigi 😂
i really appreciate the ranking at the end, because a lot of youtubers seem to just go over each thing (in this case, box arts) without actually logically weighting them. when they're actually weighted, it makes it way more interesting.
If generic fish counts, powerups shouldve counted. They all have eyes after all
Ah yes my favorite mario character, normal fish
2:18 i think you would only refer to something being younger or baby if the older version came first and vice versa
like old man logan, or young sheldon, OR baby mario
7:12 PAN BRO NOT HAMMER BRO
I love the way this guy pronounces Pompon Flower
Well, akshually, koopas are different from paratroopash 🤓👆🏻
Koopas are just post-stomp paratroopas
@@KylerGreer Could it be that every koopa starts out as a paratroopa, but they're all already pre-stomped by the time Mario gets to them? 🤔
7:53 also a volbonan you missed as well
Normal fish finally getting the love they deserve
Octoomba fans eating good today
wouldnt 3d land's block with eyes count as an enemy?
I LOVE normal fish!
Great, now go over the Japanese box arts next. The Japanese boxart for Super Mario Bros 1, for instance, is actually very different with _loads_ of characters (but still no Luigi).
Zelda would be the obvious place to go next.
An alternate weighting algorithm might be using prominance on the boxart in terms of size and location (...There are two approaches you could take for location - serious analysis involving action lines, rule of thirds, etc, i.e. doing proper analysis of the framing - or emulate the Pokemon Snap algorithm and go strictly by how close to the center the character is. I think both would be pretty funny in basically opposite ways)
5:55 Hah! Tanooki block strikes again! It's camouflage is too powerful for our eyes to see!
don't forget that all the blocks and coins are canonically cursed mushroom kingdom residents
I do not understand your maths at all, but this was highly enjoyable to watch, thank you cm
So happy to see normal fish finally getting the recognition they deserve!
6:45 you missed the Maker.
Another way to count them would be once per box art they appear in as that should give more weight to unique characters and reduce the weight of things like a swarm of generic fish or generic Mario enemies
What do you mean? Normal fish clearly are very important and deserve a lot of weight
I personally would’ve also taken into account the size of each character relative to the box art-after all, the more important a character is to a game, the more you’d want to have them stand out in some way
Would love to see a second one with the spinoffs
4:46 if the colored roads are different then the colored yoshis are also different
5:20 If Starship Mario counts as a depiction of Mario, then this planet counts as another Luma, since it's the one that the hungry Luma fed in Good Egg Galaxy transformed into.
I appreciate the effort that went in to finding this data and making this video. I think it’d be cool to include the spinoffs like Mario RPG and the Mario&Luigi series (maybe the original Mario Bros. should count too) I would also like to see the addition of the spines and back of the boxes and covers from other regions included (only alternative versions/no duplicates).
I have many criticisms of your methodology, such as not scaling according to prominence (size and position) on the box art, but the sentiment that Daisy has had more prominent box-art appearances than Peach in mainline games does appear to be valid.
Also I never noticed that the Sunshine logo had words on the edge despite having looked at it my whole life, what a mindscrew.
I swear you got a salemen voice, like a sell ice to my in the north pole kind. Keep up the great work love the content
This is the type of useless yet facinating content I absolutely adore. Keep it up!
This video is extremely important.
5:58
you missed the Brick Block Mimic! (I do not know their official name) but it is an enemy that shows up in 3d land
you can tell what it is since the brick block there has eyes
You missed the purple fork in the odyssey box art
Great vid! You should do this again with spin offs (mario kart, mario party, mario sports games, etc)
Very enjoyable, underated
"Every mainline super mario game" and you didn't even include I'm A Teacher: Super Mario Sweater
I'm sure it wouldn't have changed the final numbers all that much, but at 7:37 you can see a purple blob at the edge of the sidewalk. That's a Volbonan (the fork people from the Luncheon Kingdom)
I think instead of giving a bonus for appearing earlier in time, I would give a bonus for how much of the physical box they covered and possibly for appearing on boxes with fewer other characters.
It'd be cool to see a video like this with the legend of zelda's box art :)
I think it's worth noting that despite the fact that he's wearing a blue cap, Toad in Super Mario 3D World is actually Toad, like, the character named 'Toad'. He just decided to wear blue that day, but it's not the same character as Blue Toad from the New Soup games.
Could you share the calculations you gave the final weighted appearances? I’d like to do this for other game series and want to be faithful in my adaptation
You… missed a Volbonian on Odyssey’s box art
i love how normal fish is more important then almost every playable character and it´s just 1.54 points beheind luigi, we need a normal fish spin off like luigis mansion or captain toad
I find this ranking ridiculously absurd, and thats why i love it lol
I knew about the Mario sunshine text because I have a poster of it and it's a lot easier to notice at that size. Checkmate.
Surprised that the size of the character on the box art for each instance wasn't taken into account (or at least wasn't mentioned in the rankings)
5:54 there are actually 3 things, Mario, a goomba, and a fake block (similar to a block hopper from smb3)
4:41 you missed a butterfly on the bottom planet, it´s on the flowers between the bunnies
It's harder to calculate, but I feel like there should be weighting according to how much space they take up in the image.
Awesome video man! I might be wrong but I think on the Super Mario Galaxy 2 boxart you might've missed that spiky plant enemy on the same island you spotted a piranha plant.
This is really impressive
Not the purple fork not being counted in Mario Odyssey’s cover in new donk-
3:09 I’ve never noticed this
Was expecting spinoffs to be taken into consideration...
Probably someone has already noticed it. But you forgot a Volbonan (a resident from the Luncheon Kingdom) in SMO's box art. They are in front of the 9th New Donker who is crossing the street
I cannot believe Bowser is lower than normal fish 💀
Perhaps a little too hard to measure, but total percentage of box art real-estate taken up would be interesting as well.
3:38 that bunny is master luma
New Super Roughly 36 Normal Fish U was a high point of the series
Random trivia: Nep-Enut spelled backwards is Tune-Pen.
05:45 Mario and a goomba, good... but you missed the block enemy!
When I think super Mario, I think normal fish
Me: thinking mario will take the cake
Also me: Seeing the 36 fish on the Mario Odyssey box 😰
Can't BELIEVE you forgot the most prominent character on the Galaxy Box Art, our beloved "Mr Gay"
You forgot the fake block on the Mario 3D Land box Art! How could you forget it!
