fun fact: the RIM-8 Talos, that glorious flying telephone pole, is stored in the magazines without its fins attached. When the missile is due to be loaded, it first goes into a preparation area where the technicians run checks and bolt on the actual fins. Only then does it go out to the rails. That's why it takes longer to reload than the RIM-24/SM-1
@@NoStupidZone1 The RIM-8 is indeed a big missile, even bigger with the fins. I guess storing it without the fins means you can pack more into the magazines
@@NoStupidZone1 The Talos has a diameter of 2ft without the fins and was 9ft in diameter with fins on top of being 32ft long. @@Stealth17Gaming Also, apparently the late RIM-8's, which are apparently what's in game, were really hard to shoot down or spoof with jamming or chaff. In fact testing of the later missiles showed that it was more likely to hit targets that were jamming than targets that weren't

The RA-5C was one of the fastest aircraft to ever deploy from the carrier. Same engines as the F-4, but because it was so "clean" could easily out run any MIGs that went after it.
I did 2 deployments on the Ranger 1987 and 1989. I was in VS-38 CVW2 24 F-14A - VF-1 and VF-2 24 A-6E - VA-145 and VMA(AW)-121 10 S-3A - VS-38 4 E-2C - VAW-116 4 EA-6B - VAQ-131 5 SH-3 - HS-14 I worked on the flight deck both deployments as a troubleshooter final checker.
Our interceptors used to go vertical from runway up until stalling then flatten out to regain speed to a tanker and on to target but yeah it wasn’t common. Entire area knew when Lightnings and Phantoms were on a shout.
Edit: After the release of sea power and getting access to the manual, my original comment was incorrect (sea power's WRA is different to that of C:MO), and in the interest of not spreading misinformation/confusing newcomers, this is what is in the sea power manual: - Weapons TIGHT: Unit will only defend itself or formation against threats (only engaging missiles/torpedoes/converging hostile aircraft) - Weapons FREE: Unit will engage at any confirmed hostile target and engage in self/formation defense - Weapons HOLD: Unit will not fire at all, but still defends itself with CIWS from missiles Original comment: Really enjoying your videos! You seem to be a bit confused regarding weapon authorization, this is how C:MO defines it (I assume the same in Sea Power): - Weapons TIGHT: fire on contacts classified as HOSTILE ONLY - Weapons FREE: fire on everything and anything, including contacts marked as NEUTRAL - Weapons HOLD: don't fire on anything, even if classified hostile. Not sure if this is the same in Sea Power, it might allow firing in self defence, or it may only allow manual fire. I don't currently have my hands on the game (*shakes fist*), so I can't test it. In your case (Weapons TIGHT) the ships had range to fire on the Mig's, they were classified as hostile, so they had the authorization to engage.
Weapons free does not mean that they'll engage neutrals. It means all contacts identified as hostile can (and will) be engaged, wheres weapons tight means only defensive fire is permitted. The Oklahoma was defending the RA-5C here, which was already fired upon and being intercepted by the MiGs
I wonder if the final game will have dates on availability of weapons? Like GBU-10 came into service in 1976. In other scenarios I have seen players using aircraft that was not yet in service.
They've changed this scenario in the release to Early Access. They've removed the carrier group and the recon flight. Makes it a little more difficult, not much, but you need to spot the targets without getting into range of their costal artillery.
One thing I want to see, can you choose the loadout of aircraft an airfield or aircraft carrier has? Because I was planning to make the Falklands Islands war and set up an Argentinian airfield with A-4 Skyhawks (assuming they are modeled in the game). Either way this game has so much potential once its released.
Also "Weapons Tight" is not "Do not fire unless I, the player, order you to." It is, "Do not fire unless you perceive a direct and active threat to friendly forces (such as planes for your task force, or the ship itself)." So they are still able to independently engage targets. If you don't want them to fire at all unless you say so, you need to put them on weapons hold.
Level bombing any AA battery with dumb iron and no ECM, or even a coordinated attack with multiple assets is wild. It is simulation/game, but I don't know....
