I wanted to run the Midstate for the third year in a row but the military put me out in western NY. So, I'll be running a 50 miler out here at the same time you guys start tomorrow. I'm going super bare bones on this one. Just a vest, nutrition and an extra pair of shoes. It's all road miles so it'll be the Torin 5's as well (same colorway as yours). Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. May the weather forever be in our favor!
I live in Asia at the moment, I love the T8 they are the only shorts that don't chaff on me during the long runs in very very hot and humid weather, brilliant shorts. Good luck on your race.
Wow, I am so excited to see you prepare and the support from your family with the new addition- I am so believing and trusting you will finish strong Dave!! You got this!
Get it brother, love your videos! I'm stationed in Germany and your videos have inspired me to start running more and look at ultra marathons! Good luck, keep your head up!
Good Luck! Great prep video! Looks like you have most everything covered. On long adventures, I pack a compass just in case I lose GPS. I also like to have a knife and a lighter in case I need to start a fire.
Good luck Dave for the race this weekend. Talking about T8, while I am not sure, the company seems to be based in Hong Kong (where I live) and the Sherpa Shorts is super popular here. It is cheap and causes no chafing. I have 3 personally and definitely like it. I will tty out the Lululemon shirt. I learnt from one of your old videos about injini toe socks and they are my go to now. Thanks for your recommendation 🤝
Find it really interesting you're running in a LuLu top. I have one as well and it's sneakily become my favorite shirt. I think men in general are sleeping on LuLu; they're kicking out some REALLY nice stuff.
For sure! They actually sponsored a video on my channel not too long ago and sent over a handful of items including the surge shorts and tops. I've fallen in love with the shirts because of how comfortable they are! I always assumed they just made women's leggings!
@@ChaseTheSummit That's awesome! I'm running in a... Metal Tech Vent I think is the specific one? Running tops are my extreme nit, and so far, they're number one. Makes my Nike tops feel heavy and clunky. Properly good stuff.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. Made me think about things. Love the biolight, but way to expensive for me at the moment. Looking for something to replace my headlamp, which charge is enough just for couple of hours. But I need something much cheaper for now.
@@ChaseTheSummit I got the headlight with a deal on Amazon. Absolutely love it! Thanks a lot. It has all what I needed + extra battery life + red led which is absolutely awesome when I run on the track in total dark and my eyes adopt to dark environment. Do you have any advice for rear strobe? I checked some on Amazon but these are looking not good. I now use bicycle strobe strapped on my running backpack, but I wonder if there is something more suitable.
Please put the Celsius on the screen when you mention temperatures. A nice touch for us, viewers from Europe 😉. Awesome comprehensive overview of an equipment set for a 100 miler. I'll be coming back to it.
I highly recommend Leukotape in lieu of duct tape when treating blisters or larger wounds. The Leukotape stays stuck to your skin, even when wet, and isn't too difficult to remove when you're ready.
@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks Dave. The only affected are bottom of the feet. I will give foot glide a shot and see how it goes. paper tapes helping a lot at the moment.
@@ChaseTheSummit oh you must try inov8 shoes they light and awesome. If your feet wide might be narrow but if not they worth a look. I like the zero drop or low drop helps my ankles. If muddy race they do x talon with huge grips lol
Great video - in the UK, in some races, they stipulate that we bring hard copies of the maps and a compass for navigation when technology fails. Are you planning to do the same or just rely on the gpx file?
Iove these videos Dave!! The one thing you didnt mention was what watch you are going to use and the setup for it. But my guess is Garmin Enduro? Fenix? Or did you go Coros? Do you have any goals for this Ultra? Or is it just a get it done thing? Good luck out there dude
I ended up using the COROS Vertix 2 with the GPX file uploaded with waypoints for aid stations. The goal was to just get it done because my training hasn't been great due to family obligations... The race didn't go as planned. I'll have a recap video soon.
Only thing I can you you’re missing is some proper food like a sandwich. You know how you get bored of gels and bars. Have a brilliant race, all the best and enjoy.
For speed. Flasks are easy to take out and re-fill at aid stations without removing your vest. With hydration bladders it's a more cumbersome process. I also like how I can distribute the weight of the water with some in the front and some in back rather than all of it in the back which can put added stress on the shoulders and make you feel back heavy. It's all personal preference though, lots of people still use reservoirs!
I've only ran 100's which... have taken longer than 24 hours but not an actual "24 hour" challenge. I can't imagine it would change my strategy too much unless it was a small looped course in which case I might ditch the hydration pack in favor of a handheld if the aid was a short distance away.
I haven’t started trail running (yet) but I know from road running that you should never wear brand new shoes for such long distances but always have some miles on them! I would guess it’s the same for trail right?
Typically yes. But I've been through so many pairs of these shoes that it wasn't a huge concern and my other pair was pretty trashed. I packed the other pair as a backup in the event something happened.
Sadly it maxes out at 14:00/miles for some reason which is actually a pretty fast pace for a 100 mile ultra! I will use my track from 2019 as a virtual partner though.

Camelback soft flasks are clutch. I actually hate the Salomon ones that came with the vest as well, lol. Glad you mentioned the ones you use!
I love that they have an on/off valve! Makes those annoying dribbles down my shirt less likely lol.
Interesting to see what it takes to run 100 miles... good to get recommendations for new bits of kit too. Good luck, hope it goes well for you

Yeah, because in all the European videos, they always translate to Fahrenheit (NOT) 🤣
@@toadlguy most mountaineering/trail running videos from EU are in French, German and Italian. This probably means very little audience from the US...

This race isn’t in the backcountry but the trails can be pretty tricky to follow. I’ll be relying on my watch and GPX file to guide my way.
(Also UK and old school so still use and love a proper map, but for a 100m that’s a lot of copies of a 1-25,000 OS😉)
@@nikhoward What do you in the case of a 100 miler? Do you just rely on your GPS watch without any paper copies and compass?

I'm hoping to leverage aid stations for real food. I didn't want to leave soggy sandwiches in a duffel bag!
It doesn’t look like those OR gloves are available nowadays. What’s your current go to running glove? Thanks!
Crap, I’m running the 50 tomorrow and now have to adjust my gear after seeing this 😬
No no, you do you!
Good luck my friend. What would be your race watch?
Thanks! I ended up using the COROS Vertix 2 for this one.
Great channel, just subscribed. I see you like your Altras. I'm debating going Vibram V-Trails. Do you think a 100 is too long for those?
Those would be way too minimal for my feet but it's really up to you. If you're comfortable for long stretches in them maybe they'd perform?
I guess I’ll find out through training. Thanks
Do your feet not ache on ultras with the LP's?
Would have thought the Olympus may have been your choice.
I like both but tend to reach for the Lone Peaks for some reason. The Olympus certainly offer more cushion though.
Beginner question: why do folks use vests instead of a traditional CamelBak/bladder system during ultras?
