Thank you. This video was very helpful for me. I'm doing the Superior 100 in September. I also really enjoyed your monthly live videos during the pandemic. Keep up the good work! -Doug
I've long since given up on gels and now prefer real foods like boiled eggs, dried fruits, small rice packs with anchovies etc. My takeway from this excellent sharing is the ginger candies (which I love, but never brought along on races) and the way you plan your race using ultraPacer -- thats neat! Thanks!
Hey Ryan! I just wanted to say thanks for sharing this ultrapacer website. I signed up for my first 100 miler a couple months back and have been furiously planning and training. I spent so long wracking my brain to remember where I saw the tool you used and wasn't coming across anything else. This website is going to be an absolute help in training. Without you showing me this powerful tool I'd be a very sad guy. So thank you!
Just saw the spreadsheet. With vert and sunrise/sunset. Genius. That is a keeper. Those Sea to Summit bags I use. Great durable water resistant bags. Always a sharpie!! And toothbrush.
this was an excelllent video covering drop backs. first 30 miler is in september, so this was great for helping me think through what to put one or two allowed drop bag.
I'm so glad I found this video. I'm running my first 100k and I needed a bit of feedback on what I was packing. This gives me a better idea of what to pack since I won't have a crew during this race. Thanks
Running my first trail run in under a month, a 50 miler, so this information is really helpful. I really had no clue what to put in and sure I would have just piled too much in. And the website is pure gold.
Made it to the end. I need to pick up some gin gins....and the mini cliff bars look great too. I grabbed ginger ale at every aid station and it really helped to settle my stomach. Didn’t have any issues throughout Mohican.
Dudddeee i found your channel through Daves podcast and Ive been binge watching everything. You got some SICK content. I would love to see I video where you place the different Altra shoes? From Lone peak to Olympus etc etc they all seem similiar but also... different? You seem to have a lot of knowledge on the Altra shoes series. Cheers Ryan!
Awesome, so cool you came from Dave's podcast!!!! I have actually been thinking about doing a video exactly liek you mentioned, like and Altra shoe matrix or something. Thanks Pieter, see you around!
This video wasn't boring at all! I only recently got into running a few months ago. Doing my first half marathon this Sunday, then doing a 12k trail run the first week of December. Something about ultras is intriguing, even though I can't say what exactly. Gotta make it through this half, then a full marathon first! haha
Great video Ryan. I really appreciated the honesty and thoroughness you shared when explaining what you prepared for your run. I'm facing 100mile in cool conditions and was concerned about exactly what to pack. You've provided some great insights to help me plan better for my run. Cheers from Down Under!
Picked up a few new things from this: ginger candy, Tums, and extra Buffs.. The only thing I carry you didn't mention is a small aluminum trowel and a little paper in a water proof bag in my vest. It's lightweight and if you've ever needed one in the middle of nowhere - you know. I also put an extra headlamp plus extra batteries in the night bag. I know its mental but in the first bag after halfway, I put in a sleeve of fig newtons! One thing that has helped me with the gel burnout is different flavors and different brands in each bag. (Only do this if you have tested them all before).
Awesome Michael!! So glad it helped. And oh man I guess I forgot to put that in there but I do carry some baby wipes in a little plastic bag!! Fig Newton’s would be great too!
Ran the Never Summer 100k this past July. Loved it. Living in Oregon, I’ll be doing a west coast 100-miler next year. Thanks for the video! Have my eyes on No Business for 2022.
Just started watching all your content and it's really an awesome channel. Preparing for my first 100ks and 100 miler hopefully both this year and probably somewhere in Europe, your videos will be of great help I'm sure!. Thanks and greetings from Amsterdam, Holland.
Have you ever tried a long distance race with foods with longer lasting nutrient profiles? Like less or no carbs and sugar and more fats like avocados and peanut butter?
I haven’t, mainly because I don’t crave those things during races. My diet is pretty high carb in general so it’s what I’m used to. Could be a fun experiment though!
Great video Ryan! :-) I like prepping bags as you have as I think it also gets you thinking about the race and getting in a positive mindset. If your drop bags are organised, you are organised and it's all under control when you get to a CP as you know exactly what to do and what is in your bag that you need. I also took an idea from one of your other videos to have CPs/distance etc on piece of paper in ziplock so I could keep eye on progress & what was ahead. Now to run a race.....!
Very informative. Thanks so much for sharing! I’m preparing my 1st 50-mile in September and 1st 100-mile in November this year. I’ll take your advice into practice.
Thank you for your videos! Picked up running a few weeks ago as I got inspired by Courtney Dauwalter and David Goggins and your videos really help me prepare step by step in terms of equipment, nutrition and even the attitude to conquer my first marathon. Sub!
Great video. Still learning the actual race preparation part so this helps. One thing I learned from a friend is to add in your nutrition a treat of some sort. Gives you something to look forwards to. I put 100 calorie packs of mini Oreos in the drop bags for my 100K. DNF but those Oreos tasted great.
Very good video, I like that, I am the one who ran until now for the year 2020 only, many races and many thousands! miles 😊😊and I have to do one more on December..
SO HELPFUL! I probably won't have a crew when I start doing ultras after the pandemic, so this is EXACTLY what I need to see. Great production and information density, too! Do you have a specific sequence you go through at the dropbag stations? I'll have to pack checklists at the top of the bag because I can be scatterbrained, I'm curious what your checklist would look like. Thanks!
Sweet, thank you!!! Good luck to you as you give it a shot without crew. It really was a good experience to go through. I just memorized what i had in each bag, kinda rehearsed beforehand a bit, but most of the aid stations I just filled bottles first, then grabbed some food and drink and tried to get out as soon as I can. After about 50 miles I always sit down for a couple minutes, seems to help me a lot and allows me to run more. The simpler you can keep everything the better. Even though having all this stuff might not seem simple hahah
Wow, that is a lot of stuff. I appreciate how organized you are for your 100 milers. How much does the stuff you carry typically weigh? Hey Ryan, thanks James
Thanks James! It does get kind of heavy especially when you are trying to carry everything for a long section, but never got to be so much that it was unmanageable.
Super helpful Ryan! Two questions: 1. What proportion of your calories do you plan to get from your own food vs aid station? Sounds like you plan for nearly all calories with your own food, until things go a little wrong. 2. How many total calories per hour do you target? I managed to get a little over 200 for my first ultra (a 50 mi) and I think maybe it was a little low. But it sounds like that's in your ballpark.
Yeah I always try to plan for using my own nutrition since it’s predictable and controllable, but definitely switch the majority for aid station hot food at some point when I lose interest in my gels and bars. I try to get about 200-300 per hour. A lot can come from your drink mix, so I try to account for that if it’s hot or cold, will change based on that. It’s a moving target and hard to get right!
I'm really late to this video but thanks for the information. I've ran a few ultras and never thought about using tums. Also I love altra but have never tried the Olympus. Do you ever have ankle rolls with the high stack height? I just ordered a pair. The last ultra my feet were killing me in the LP 4.5s. Thanks for sharing 👍
Great video! I really enjoy getting down into the nitty-gritty of logistics of running ultras. That’s where the rubber meets the road and can make or break your run. Quick question... what is the size of your drop bags in the video? Thx!
I'm doing the NB100 2022 in a few weeks, same direction as you did. I have the same dry bags you use, and they are 20 liter size. What size did you use? The manual for the race gives the maximum dimensions as 10"x8"x20", and am not quite sure my 20 liter bags meet the criteria. I have smaller bags, but it's impossible to get size 14 shoes plus extras into them. Great video.
What flavors of Spring Energy do you like? I've found only Canaberry, Power Rush, and occasionally Hill Aid to be palatable, actually having to spit out the others. This doesn't include Speednut or Koffee as I haven't tried them yet. I've found the taste of Muir Energy to be more enjoyable (all except Sweet Potato Oregano) and is similarly a healthier alternative to other traditional gel brands.
I like all the spring flavors, but sometimes your palette does weird things during 100 milers. Muir is great but I don’t like how hard it is to get out of the package. Spring is a lot quicker and sometimes you need that. The three flavors you mentioned are my favorite too!
The official race website had a GPX file that we could download and use, so got lucky with that one. But in the past I've joined a facebook group for a race and usually someone there will have a file they can post.
Yeah if you bought it all at once it would certainly be a lot of money, but if you buy good gear it will last a long time. I’ve collected all this stuff over the years and it has all lasted really well. I really like Salomon clothes, they are great 👍
"go ultra running, you'll be in touch with nature", they said. look at all this equipment and plastic packaging for 1 day. there's got to be a better (meaning more sustainable) way! but it's less convenient, that's for sure...
Thank you. This video was very helpful for me. I'm doing the Superior 100 in September. I also really enjoyed your monthly live videos during the pandemic.
Keep up the good work!

That is so nice, thank you!!!

All those little things can add up to big results. Thanks!!
River bags are an excellent choice for drop bags. Can compress down and (obviously) weather proof.
Yeah they are really great for drop bags!
Thanks for sharing! Didn't think about TUMs and gin gin. Crew last weekend and saw my friend had TUMs. Great suggestions! Thanks man!
Yeah it's great! Easy to eat, I always get the berry flavors so they taste good too. They've helped a lot in my last few races.
this was an excelllent video covering drop backs. first 30 miler is in september, so this was great for helping me think through what to put one or two allowed drop bag.
That’s awesome Cameron thanks for letting me know, and good luck at your first 30 miler!!!
Lots of good stuff in this video, thanks for making it 🙏
Very helpful content as I am getting ready to run my first 100 in few months from now. Thanks

Great video, Ryan. Really interesting and insightful.
Much appreciated! Thank you!
Loved the video as always! I usually pick something up:)

Awesome!! That’s so cool!
Appreciate how thoughtful and thorough you were here will definitely help me as I gear up for my first Ultra.
That’s awesome, good luck during your first ultra Gabe!
Thanks so much for this! I have my first 100 in two days and This was a tremendous help! Now I am a little less nervous! thanks again!
That’s awesome Ashla!!! Have a great time and remember all the training you put in, it will take you to the finish line!!👏

Great video, really interesting 👍 going to subscribe, looking forward to getting through your other posts.
Awesome, thank you so much!!!!
Thank you 👍👍👍
I appreciate this BIG-time. Thanks Ryan.
You are welcome, thanks for letting me know Daniel!!

That's awesome Stephen, good luck!

@@RyanClaytonFilms 14k+ of leg loving elevation gain. Seeing the sunrise on race morning...surrounded by mountains, spectacular!
cool, i've often wondered what to put into a drop bag, spare trainers, socks, vest, food and drink where the only tings I could think of.
Yeah it can be different for everyone but there are some things that are common. Glad you found it useful!
Just started watching all your content and it's really an awesome channel. Preparing for my first 100ks and 100 miler hopefully both this year and probably somewhere in Europe, your videos will be of great help I'm sure!. Thanks and greetings from Amsterdam, Holland.

Thank you for this video. I ran the 2019 Run Rabbit Run 100 due to your video of 2018, so any ultra info you provide, is much appreciated!!
That’s is really cool, hope you had a good race at RRR! Good luck with your next one!

Yep, sometimes you get it right and sometimes you get it wrong. Every race is a learning experience 👍
