    I love that you’re a “regular guy” and just out there doing this for the joy and challenge of it. It’s one of those great sports where the barrier to entry is low, but the challenge can be as great as you want it to be. There is no limit yet to how far we can run. I stopped running for about 15 years and have just gotten back into it since the quarantine started. I’m up to about 25-30 miles a week and hopefully can get up to running a 50K in the next couple of years. It’s therapy just being out there and letting my mind wander, see scenery, and get away from everything for a bit.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 года назад +4

      That means a lot, thanks! I'm glad to hear you're running again. It's certainly a form of meditation for me. I'd be lost without weekly miles. Good luck with your future 50k!

    Huge congratulations Dave! That’s an amazing accomplishment that not many achieve.
    I was just talking with a guy I work with yesterday about your midstate run.
    Also great RUclips presentation you put together here to explain. It answers many questions.
    I’m also extremely proud of my “stepson” Dave Ring’s personal achievement (35+ miles) and his ability to assist you with yours.
    All this makes me want to get up off my lazy ass, and do some running.
    Looking forward to future events, your subsequent presentation, and analysis.

      It’s the Glasshouse 100, in the Glasshouse Mountains, Queensland Australia. Super excited and nervous about the distance, I only started running in March last year... so it’s a big step up from the 100km I did a few months ago.
      That said I hope to do a few 200 milers next year if I survive this weekend.

    My friend and I were looking into this race. It will be my first 100 and her 3rd but our first time running this. I found your video to be very helpful and inspirational but it does bring up some concerns. About how much of the coarse was on road? I loath road running. And my other concern is the navigation and lack of markings. What are your thoughts? Did you find any one thing to be helpful, your watch, a map, etc?
    Any advice, thoughts, or recommendations would be appreciated as we consider this race.

      Hey Christine! The Midstate Massive is a fantastic race run by an excellent director. This was the first year the race happened so there were a few kinks they needed to iron out but overall I was impressed with how it was organized. Due to some last minute issues with permits the race had to re-route onto the road a lot more than they had planned. There were course changes just a few days before the race that had us all pretty shaken up! Hopefully for the 2nd year things should be a little more predictable. For my race there was a good bit of road running... probably 20-25 miles or so. Some of it was painful, in the dark, on super hilly pavement. Fortunately my Pacer kept my spirits high . This may change for the 2nd year... the course is probably being worked on.
      Navigation was tough mainly because a lot of the race was only marked by very old "Midstate Yellow Triangles" and due to the race being in october the leaves were covering the trail and made it hard to follow. This isn't a very highly trafficed area. However, the whole experience did make it feel more adventurous!
      As far as tips. Yes, having the map on my watch was HUGELY helpful. Also, having a pacer was really nice and got me through the night. Also, if you use facebook check out the "Midstate Massive Runners Group" It's a fantastic place to get day-by-day information directly from the race director.
      This is a really unique race. There aren't a lot of point-to-point events in our area!
      If you'd like to talk more about the race find me on Facebook or Instagram... I'd be happy to chat! Hope that helps. Good luck!

      Thanks for the suggestions! Those are all great ideas. I have a large list of reviews to cover but unfortunately not a ton of time to film and edit with my full time job and family so they tend to trickle out slowly. Is there something in particular you're interested in that I can prioritize? Thanks for watching!

      If I had to choose id like a headlamp review (if been looking to buy a black diamond or Petzl one for months now for rock climbing, trail running, mountain biking and hiking and I just cant seem to choose one )
      And a running pack as well.

    Wow! Congratulations, man! Midstate has been on my radar for a while now too, as WAS Vermont. Incredible accomplishment by you in a great time and NINTH!! Very impressive! I know doing the video was hard but you did a great job there, too. Would it have been nice to see more of the race, sure. But for those of us that are still working their way up to 100 Miles, your video was very informative as it was. Thanks very much-I'll be watching more in the future. One question-were you satisfied with your nutrition for the race? I wouldn't have touched half the stuff you ate, but if it worked for you..Keep on truckin'!

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 года назад

      Thank you! Yes, I think my nutrition worked out pretty good. For the most part I relied on gels but later in the race I was consuming more and more "real food". Tortilla wraps with avocado seemed to really hit the spot and give me an energy boost during the night hours. I also drank some ginger beer my crew had brought for me and about a tube of pringles. If anything I might have eaten a bit TOO much, but in my prior experience its better to consume too many calories rather than bonk out as long as your gut can handle it. Like you said, it's different for everyone! Thanks for watching!

      @BeardVsTheWorldUK1 4 года назад

      @@ChaseTheSummit I read about the gels and the switch to real food below, and a part of me would like to argue that that was a sign your body decided to go after the food it needs and not the stuff you're taught to want. Since I've switched to real food I haven't bonked once, at any stage of any race, which is why I asked about your nutrition. Thanks for your reply, and of course I'll watch your videos-us New England? MA? dudes gotta stick together. My mom lives in Milford, we grew up in Sharon. What do you do now? You kind of touched on it in the video but I'd be curious to know what you do once you reach this incredible milestone. What comes next? Really appreciate you taking the time to answer, but if it's too much trouble, I understand. My wife has the same problem as fitness/life coach.

    Hey Dave,
    I really enjoyed the video, thanks! I have been running for a while now, and have a number of marathons and trail ultras as scars on my soul. Haha! I've been toying with the idea of a self-supported 100 miler (only feasible option considering the pandemic). Can you offer any tips on what you would include in drop bags? How long should long rungs be? Did you train differently for the 2 100 mile attempts?
    Thanks, and I really enjoy your videos! (I just ordered a Polar Grit X after your reviews!)

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 года назад +2

      Hey Robb! Scars on your soul! That's deep! I've also been thinking about a self supported 100 but it's hard to commit to. For me, I like to have a spare set of shoes, socks, extra layers for cooler night hours, gels, body glide, blister kit (duct tape, syringe, etc..) a portable battery charger, and a few other items in my bags. I don't go too overboard as I typically carry the essential stuff in my vest. My long runs before the 100 were a maximum of 50 miles. I used a couple 50K's and 50 Milers as "training runs" leading up to the race. On my on, I did a couple of 30-40 mile runs but this didn't happen weekly. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and subscribing!

    Looking at the .gpx file, seems like there's another awful lot of road running? What's your guess percentage?

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 года назад +1

      Yeah there was a lot more than expected! They were forced to make some last minute changes to the course due to permits that forced us out on the road more. Some in residential neighborhoods, others more like dirt/jeep roads. And loooottts of hills on these roads. I'd guess maybe 20-25 of the 100 was road.

    Great video! Thank you. I am considering signing up for this race but have had two 100s cancelled so far this year so am hesitant to sign up for a 3rd. I have completed 4 official 100s and one "fat-ass" 100 last month, but this one scares me. I worry most about getting lost. How did you get the course loaded onto your watch? I have a Coros, but never really use the navigation. Also, I've read that most of the road miles are in the second half. I have never changed shoes during a race, but wondered if it might make sense to change to a road shoe at some point?? But then it seems like it gets technical again at the end, right? I guess another question I have is about your phone and the tracking system. Did you have to bring a portable charger? More than one? Are you DQed if your phone dies?
    You did an excellent job on what appears to be a really slow course (only one runner under 24 hours). Be sure to return to VT. It's a great race to finish, and you'll love it when you do. You were a victim of the extreme heat.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 года назад

      Hey Chris! If you have a Coros Apex, Apex Pro, or Vertix you should be able to import a GPX file into the app and then sync it with your watch. Last year the RD of the race provided a full GPX course a couple weeks prior to the race which was great. In terms of shoes... yeah changing into road shoes at around the half way point would probably be beneficial. I did the whole thing in trail shoes and it wasn't the worst... but road shoes would have been nice for the long road sections.
      As far as the app goes. It was calle d"Race Joy". I personally left a small USB charger in my drop bag and picked it up when I needed it. The nice thing is that the Drop Bag's move with the runners so you can store all kinds of "maybe" items in there and grab/drop as needed. A lot of runner's phones died and as far as I know no one DQ'd. I will say that I actually liked having the app as it gave my crew a real time look at how far behind/ahead I was so they could plan accordingly.
      Hope that helps! Feel free to reach out with additional questions.
