POWER Tom Drums! | 5 Reasons They Are Awesome!

  • We often don't give enough attention to our tom drum sounds and sizes, but they're still a very important part of your drum kit. In this video, I give you 5 reasons why POWER TOMS are awesome and are primed for a comeback!
    POWER TOMS!
    5 Reasons Why!
    1. It’s the tom sound of 80’s metal. You can get that 80’s ballad tone, especially if you throw a bunch of reverb on the toms
    2. If you tune them high with coated heads, you basically arrive at the John Bonham tom sound
    3. More depth and sustain in your tom sounds, which in my opinion makes it easier to get a fuller sounding recording
    4. Effects, effects, effects!
    5. This is the most shallow reason on the list, but simply put, in an era of shorter toms coupled with a strong sentiment of 80’s nostalgia, these simply look awesome because they’ve been out of style for so long. They’re going to stand out on the stage and catch attention, and let’s be honest, we’re drummers, it’s not like you’re playing a 100 decibel plus instrument so people can ignore you.

    Idk if anyone else has mentioned this, but part of the reason I love power toms are the feeling you get hitting it vs. a more shallow shell.
    It’s kind of indescribable but if you hit both a shallow and a power tom, you know what I’m talking about!

    In fact, that stainless steel rack tom that JB used was actually a 12x15 which is considered standard. It seems deep due to the long mach lugs and the high position and angle. Power toms are awesome! I hate fast and hyperdrive toms!

    Classic example of a power tom user/player from the 80s up till now is nicko Mc brain from iron maiden.
    I love power toms.
    I'm also in the process of building my own kit at work from scratch and yes bass drums 20 inch deep and toms all square sized, floor tom's over square sized, same depth as kick drums.
    Yeah so square size rock mate.

    I'm 52 and just bought a late 80's Granstar, 24 x 16, 16x16, 13x12, 10x9. I was only able to get it because it was cheap. And I've played for years but this is my first 24" bass drum which is cool. I'm just trying to decide what heads to go for and what type sound I want. PS - Bonham did play CS black dots at some point in the 70s with the vistalite kit.

    I have several kits, and though the tone of my kit with the power toms is nice... the reason fast toms became so popular (IMHO)... is the fact that you can get them to sit way closer to the bass drum, and actually hit the drum at a far better angle (flatter). The disadvantage of power toms is that they either have to be set at an extreme angle relative to the snare (See Lar's kit @ 1:50) or you need to sit lower than you'd like to hit them at a more appropriate angle. By "appropriate angle" I mean that the distance from the snare to the upper toms should be minimized as much as possible. Everyone plays differently, but fast transitions between snare and toms is very difficult at best when the upper toms are set high relative to the snare. To counter this... drummers had to angle the upper toms drastically. You also run the risk of poking holes in your heads :-( I honestly think that these are the main reasons they went out of style. Power tom kits are great for groove rock, because you're playing at a slower tempo with feel. The distance between the snare and the upper toms is less important for this type of drumming, and you can set your toms at a better angle of attack. Thanks for the video!

      I just put my 13 x 11 on a snare stand in front of the snare. Then have the ride nicely over the kick.

    • @footnotedrummer
      @footnotedrummer 3 года назад

      @@timbretrent113 ... yep. That technique works well if you only use one upper tom. If you add another though, you have to completely alter your playing style by having two toms on stands to the left of your kick drum. Either that... or put your toms at extreme angles to minimize he distance between the snare and the tom for quick transitions between them.

    • @timbretrent113
      @timbretrent113 3 года назад

      @@footnotedrummer I have actually started putting my 12" tom to the LEFT of my hat on a stand, at the height of a floor tom so it's more like a cross pattern. The drums are also spaced out more so it's more challenging to run a fill down the toms but I don't do that very much and find I get more creative with this set up. Mine goes, 12", Hats, 13", Kick/ride, 16" FT

    • @footnotedrummer
      @footnotedrummer 3 года назад +1

      @@timbretrent113 ... you can't argue that your setup isn't unique. That's why experimentation is fantastic. If you're not playing speed metal, with fast tom rolls... it really doesn't matter. However... if you want to see something unlike any other setup that you've ever seen in metal... check out Jinjer's Drummer, Vlad. You can really see his setup clearly in their live song Pisces. Very unique, and he plays quite fast/technical. Keep it up, and have fun.

      @@footnotedrummer I only wish I had the left hand control to be able to play like that. I'm stuck crossing over to the hat for now. Interesting set up! I have both shorter and power toms and i prefer the shorter one because it has more power and resonance since is less body to vibrate from the drumhead, also you can fit them easily for giging and definitely in your drum set, power toms are heavier and well bigger so is not cool to move around, if you want to go smart go for normal shells

    I love power toms, and by the lack of it I use a 14' floor tom as a rack, and I can't play anything lower than 13' anymore, it's just too small, and Dave Grohl it's my drum hero, so that kinda explains a lot, but it's also because I really like alternative rock, so I really enjoy more punch and deeper sounds, and FU if you say that no one is looking for that anymore because I am, and so a lot other drummers do, I believe

    I sometimes get lost in terms... what depths are we exactly talking about when we say "power toms", "fast" ,"standard", etc...?
    For example, you say the floor tom is 16" deep instead of the normal 14" (being a 16" in diameter). Well, for me the "normal" sizes are 16"x16", 18"x16" or 14"x14" (FT). With the 13" rack tom, you say it's 12" deep instead of the normal 9"... again, for me a "normal" one would be 13"x11" or at least 13"x10"... anything shorter than that, I would consider it as a shallow size. In fact I think those terms change with time, what today is considered standard is not what it was years ago.... I don't know, maybe it's just I'm an old dog.
    My tom set is 10x9, 12x10, 14"x12 (rack), + 14x14 and 16x16 floor toms. For me they're pretty standard sizes (and so it was considered when I bought it, back in 2000), but now the trend is to make them shorter, so I guess today they're not "standard" any more. However, by no means I can consider them "power sizes" (well, with the floor toms there can be a coincidence). So, how would you call them...?🤔🤔🤔

    More sustain in a power tom? I disagree. It's just a different tone compared to short-shell toms. You get more low-end out of a shorter shell. As John Good of DW pointed out, the time it takes for the vibration to get from the top to the bottom of the shell is shorter. I think longer drums were mostly a marketing thing. In the late 80's and 90's, big drums meant a big and powerful sound.
