  • SUB-ZERO Winter MOUNTAIN ICY Wild Camping
    I head to the mountains in some sub-zero temperatures to experience some winter wild camping. The ambient air temperature dropped to minus nine degrees celsius (-9) and windchill the next day was forecast at minus fifteen (-15). A mix of budget and expensive gear was used on this trip, with plenty of layers making for a warm and cosy night, despite the winter cold.
    Some fine beers, lovely food and fantastic company made for a very enjoyable night in the mountains.
    (Links to Ant and Andy's channels below and also some of the gear I used)
    Have a fantastic Christmas all and I will see you on the next adventure - Chris

    They're the best conditions....no wind, rain or biters!! Great views and atmoshere, good choice of music for the different scenes aswell.
    Special mention to Ant for keeping it real in the bobcat....as long as no heavy wind, rain or snow is forecast one tent's pretty much as good as another (weight is is relevant depending on fitness, what else you're carrying etc). My winter tent I've had a couple of years is the Vaude terra hogan 2 person at 2.2kg, it's stood up to some serious conditions and I think I paid 200 pound for it. Thanks for sharing once again Chris....really enjoyed to the max.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  Год назад +1

      Thanks John - agree re the Bobcat..... I think it would shed snow due to the blade shape, I'd like to see how it fares in very strong wind - as in my book, that's the main test for a 4 season tent. A great camp out and thanks for watching 🏕️🎄

    Better (but colder) day that we got about 6 weeks ago when we were up there. I had my spikes on last week in -10 over on Sheffield Pike and it was thick ice on the way down on the path. Superb views when the mist parted and what great setting to pitch. You defo looked cramped in that tent, especially cooking but I do not know how you can have a cold drink in those conditions, a hot chocolate for me or possible a few chest warmers with a few whiskey (purely medicinal). What am amazing morning to wake up too, worth a cold nigh just for that. I hope you have a Wonderful Christmas, cheers Alan

    I do enjoy your posts and the reality of what you say.
    Thank you for the intro to Andy’s channel.
    I won’t watch the other one as I only posted once on his channel which resulted in an uncontrolled abusive tirade. (I gave my opinion of Hillebergs being over rated - they can be very good but not to the point of worship - AW really didn’t like reading an alternative opinion). I’ve owned several black labels and believe viable alternatives exists offering really decent value. I consider Hellebergs to be over priced.
    I camp with a Fjall Raven the same as yours which is brilliant, especially when double poled but my preference is for for my Crux Assault. Each to their own.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  Год назад +1

      Never tried the Crux mate - sounds like a good tent! I do like the Abisko Lite 1 - took a while to be able to use it as the first two I was sent last year had holes in the inner! • @AndyWardle
      @AndyWardle Год назад +1

      Hi again. I don’t remember being abusive to you. If it made you feel like that I apologise. It’s merely a difference of opinions. I recall saying I wanted a crux tent too. So basically agreeing with you. I still don’t think the hilles are overpriced (for some people yes) but I’ll get years out of mine. I’ll never need a better tent. Also did you know Chris has also got a BL soulo?? You don’t need to watch my video. That’s fine. But go and give ant survive the night a watch. I’m in it but you can skip those bits. 😂😂.
      Just thought I’d defend my corner 👍 no hard feelings. And happy Xmas.

    • @chrishamilton2527
      @chrishamilton2527 Год назад

      @@AndyWardle thank you, Andy. It takes a gentleman to apologise.
      Yes, I also had BL Soulo and sold it. I also sold two other Hellebergs that I owned. As I said, they are pretty good but in my opinion they are too expensive for what they are. My Crux is a great tent but everyone wants / needs vary. I’m a pretty big bloke (6’6”/118kg) and finding a tent big enough for me and my mutt, a large Dobermann) is not easy; the Crux, so far, is the best I’ve found. It doesn’t work brilliantly in as far as condensation in freezing conditions as it then can’t breath effectively but we learn to manage. The issue I had with the Soulo was waking up in a mini lake despite venting the tent including having the door part open. The Crux is no where near as wet. I even tried hiking with a Nammatj GT which was twice the weight of my Crux (and substantially larger inside).
      Regardless, thank you for the commentary and I wish you and yours a very happy Christmas and New Year.
      You never know, we might bump into each other one weekend and laugh at this (I’m easy to recognise by size and with my dog).
      Best, C.

    Nice to see you out Chris and the clouds looked a treat 👌 just a got a question regarding the Abisko and your thoughts on it compared to the scrap 1. I currently have a Scarp 1 and have only used it a handful of times so far, if I’m being honest Im finding it to be fiddly tent and a fair bit of hassle, but I do like the size and space it offers. So I’m not sure if i should stick it twist. If you have an opinion/advice on the matter it would be greatly appreciated. ATB

    • @keithsmith549
      @keithsmith549 Год назад +1

      @@MCMOutdoors I found threading the main pole through the sleeve to be fiddly with it being tight, can’t simply push it through, it has to be worked through which can be a task in high winds. The second issue I’ve noticed is the zips on the flysheet door can roll around the arch pole. This may we be a case of to much tension running through the tent, which then pulls the zips around the pole, but from my experience it’s not being pitched excessively taught. Other things like the guys at each end being, imo far too short can be swapped out of course. Just a few niggles so far, admittedly it could just have a learning curve to the tent. I’m just curious to know if others find it a fiddly tent in general. Cheers mate

      It's not a perfect tent - and as it happens, I've spoke with Henry Shires personally about 'issues' pertaining to the 2022 model of the Scarp - the main bug bear being the fabric loops for the cross poles are too short, resulting in abrasion to the pole sleeve arch..... They've released a fix, namely a loop and toggle to add some length - solves the issue, but not ideal.
      Onto the pole sleeve, yes it is a snug fit, but not overly so. Not noticed any issues with zips to be fair. The end guys are short, but no major issue - can be swapped, but not really necessary given the carbon uprights which add huge rigidity and strength.
      I too, was a bit miffed when I first got mine and discovered these issues..... But...... Having used it more and more, including in some dodgy weather - it's an absolutely superb shelter! The strength to weight ratio is insane and it's held up with a BL Soulo just fine.
      Take your time threading and removing the centre pole and you'll be fine - there's a knack to it.
      I wouldn't get rid of mine mate. A top shelter - light weight and very, very strong. The cross poles make it insanely so.

      @@MCMOutdoors Cheers Chris some great feedback and advice there. Yeah it sounds like it’s a case of gaining abit more experience with the tent and getting to know what it does and doesn’t like. Learning curve to everything, I just didn’t want to hear someone else say they’ve experienced the same problems with no work around haha.
      I am going to swap the end guys out however. You are correct about the end poles offering strength and rigidity. On a recent trip though I found the end catching the wind and because the angle of the guy is so severe it was pulling the eastern stakes clean out, despite being soundly placed.
      Thanks again for the feedback, really appreciate the time taken. ATB, Keith over at Border Raiders

      @@MCMOutdoors Why would you choose a heavier and more expensive tent instead of the Abisko Lite? The Soulo would withstand heavier snow loading, no doubt, and would provide more space, but there would be the weight penalty. Which is better in your opinion, Chris?

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  Год назад +2

      It's subjective. I don't care about weight penalties as I don't care about being an ultralight wild camper. I just enjoy lots of tents, irrespective of their weight. I'd probably choose the Soulo over the Abisko if room and "liveability" were my priorities. The Soulo is a stronger tent than the Abisko - in either red or black label guise as it has a semi geodesic pole structure and uses stronger fabric. Abisko obviously wins the weight battle, but at the expense of room. The Soulo is also much simpler to pitch 👍

    - Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm MAX
