  • In this vieo you will see how I conclusivly prove a faulty variable displacement compressor.
    I replace the original Delphi compressor with a Direct Fit MAHLE Compressor.

    Great video. thanks for the upload I used a tool called a CLT-1 that connects directly to the battery and then to the compressor, you can actuate the actuator and gives the compressor a PWM signal. I haven't had a chance to use it in a real case, but have used it on my partners car and it works really well. you can cycle it between 4% - 100%.

    Had a 2005 A3 where the climate control would never blow cold, but sometimes if set to manual it would. The ambient air temp always showed very low readings even when say 20 degrees outside.
    Had the car into several places, not 1 of them had a clue.
    This would be a good video to see, that is if one of those cars ever came into you workshop.

    I was wondering, when you evacuated the system 11g of oil was also drained.
    Do you catch that I a separate container (that you can examine for swarf) or can it potentially be reused in the same or other car?

    Fantastic video buddy and really well put together 👍🏼
    I didn't manage to notice but with the old compressor fitted did the radiator fans kick in once the a/c button was pressed to on?

    • @intelligentauto737
      @intelligentauto737  3 года назад +3

      No, there was no reaction by the vehicle to the AC button being pressed.
      Just a point here though, this is the beauty of variable displacement compressors, they don’t have the system running at full belt so often the fans don’t need to run. Less load on engine, less fuel consumed, less harmful emissions. Win win win

    How would I kno the right amount of gas to put in a variable compressor

  • @davyboucher6826
    @davyboucher6826 3 года назад

    Good video showing the diagnosis process. 1 question however did you check the solenoid valve in the compressor, these have issues on many of the VAG vehicles. It may have just been a faulty solenoid and not the internals of the compressor at fault ?

    • @intelligentauto737
      @intelligentauto737  3 года назад

      Using a power probe I energised the solenoid, I could hear the audible click of the plunger moving.
      This compressor had a drive issue.
      The spline drive was non existent

    • @TeezerDriz
      @TeezerDriz Год назад

      Clicking of the solenoid doesn't guarentee the plunger inside moves. You could remove the solenoid and apply 12 volts and by using a balloon of air find out if the plunger moves. I had this experience with my denso compressor solenoid. New solenoid is ordered.

    Hey, i got the same problem but, sometimes like 1 in 15 times it start.. but after 10 minutes it shut off.. . What do you say, is a compressor fault? Everything match the video.

  • @the_retired_mechanic
    @the_retired_mechanic 3 года назад +1

    Gary can i ask 2 questions. As its power side switched is there a danger to the ECU in supplying 12 volts to that cable during testing? And as you put oil into the compressor before fitting is there a risk that your machine will suck some of that back out when it does it Vacuum test before filling with gas?. Thanks again for this video a great watch as always.

    • @intelligentauto737
      @intelligentauto737  3 года назад +2

      No danger at all putting 12v to wire that ultimately supplies 12v. You would put jump leads from one battery to another I’d assume?
      90% of the oil in an AC system is held within the compressor, by me turning the compressor it’s getting oil into the body of the compressor rather than into the cylinder of the compressor.
      No more risk in vacuuming a system that has its original compressor fitted
      If you recover & vac from the LP port there’s less risk of extracting oil from the system as most of it lives on the HP side of the compressor & in the Condenser

    Love your vids. Are you using recycled refrigerant for recharge? Does the compressor manufacturer not require receiver/dryer and expansion valve service?

    • @intelligentauto737
      @intelligentauto737  3 года назад

      The Texa Machine I use has a refrigerant quality sensor inbuilt, it won’t recover contaminated refrigerant so anything that’s recovered is 100% pure

    • @intelligentauto737
      @intelligentauto737  3 года назад +1

      The system was not leaking and pulled and held vacuum at 1mbar so that would indicate the desiccant was not saturated in the dryer.

    • @nobb1euk1

    If I see correctly on a pulley on an old compressor bolt is missing its T30 if I remember correctly. But it's an M6 bolt. Just a little bit of lock tight and bolt will fix this one. That's a common problem. Most of them just came loose...Cheers.
