Fun fact about the costuming: it's even more brilliant than you initially think, because this is the movie that actually CREATED a lot of these late-90s fashion trends. The costume designer didn't have a budget for tons of expensive labels and current-trend looks, so instead she researched and innovated a bunch of looks that she thought would be the next big trends. And then when the movie came out and was a big hit, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy, because teens and 20-somethings wanted to dress like Cher and her friends. :)
These styles definitely became a statement of 90's fashion. I even had the fluffy collar shirt, it was like over 100 bucks though like...wtf 😒 It was by Betsy Johnson I believe.
Yeah Alicia said the plaid outfit was the most expensive. She also said she got to take a lot of her wardrobe home but gave them all to friends cause she wasn't into fashion

Hey, listening to you guys talk about 90’s era nostalgia has given me a GREAT idea! Have y’all ever seen the cult classic series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’? Not the movie, the t.v. show? You guys should totally put it on your channel! Your first foray into reacting to episodic television. It’s always looked down on because of the title but it’s really meant to be tongue in cheek; a great watch! Now, it does have a spin-off you’ll want to check out eventually but by that point you’ll be hooked and looking for more, GUARANTEED!
@@awmperry not their current format maybe, but reaction channels can evolve and grow to cover t.v. as well as film and I think they’d react wonderfully to ‘Buffy’. I’ll keep my fingers crossed :-). 🫰
I just love this movie so much! It's aged SO well too, and I think a lot of that is because of the tone. Like you guys said, it feels kinda nostalgic for the 90s even though it was made in the 90s, and because it has that kinda of stylised tone it just really doesn't age much and still feels really relatable. I think this was the movie that introduced me to the magic that is Paul Rudd, and as much as I love the whole cast, I especially love Dan Hedaya - the dad - and of course Wallace Shawn.
i am surprised you guys didn't notice, but the guy who played Travis is Breckin Meyer. he played Jon in the Garfield Movie, Nick Shaffer in Rat Race, and the voice of Joseph Gribble in King of the Hill!
i was a freshman in high school in 1995 and all my friends were dressing like this movie. the plaid skirts, the knee socks and tiny backpacks lmao. fun fact: this movie is a modern adaptation of the jane austen novel Emma
90s movie dads were just such a mood. Growing up watching these as a young girl I thought them so mean. As a now nearly-40-something year old woman I'm just like "Sir, same."
Every time you guys post a video I have to make time to sit down and watch it. You guys are great and I have discovered and re-discovered so many movies through you guys. Stay nice dudes.
I watch a number of movie reaction channels because I'm in my mid 40s and I don't know anyone who hasn't seen the movies I like. Your channel has really shot up in my list of favorite reactors. Thank you.
You guys were so much fun to watch. As other's noted, this is based on Jane Austin's "Emma". It's obvious, too. I'm an Austen fan. I watched this movie a few years back. About 3/4 way through I noticed the similarities.
Lol we also had the gum on our finger when we were teenagers, except I was an 80's teen with a piece of Blue Sugarless Dentyne gum on our fingers while we were smoking a cigarette xoxo
This movie is amazing. I’m a huge Jane Austen fan, and I think she would approve! PS, in case you haven’t seen the other 50 people pointing it out, the “far, far better” quote is from A Tale of Two Cities.
"Doing a lap before committing to one place" at the party is very much Jane Austin. People back then just... walked around a room during visits. Granted, they usually had loads of art on the walls... Also, I love that Cher recognizes Alaia. It wasn't exactly the most mainstream fashion line back then, and it's got influences in fetish, so it shows just how invested in fashion Cher is that she would even recognize Alaia.
Can we talk about the gym teacher for a moment? Julie Brown of MTV's Just Say Julie, appeared in the movie Eart Girls Are Easy and contributed the theme song as well as "Cause I'm a Blond". Released an album: Trapped in the Body of a White Girl (featuring the song "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun". And for you Millenials: co-wrote the first Camp Rock. Even appears onscreen in it.
I went to see this in the movie theater only because I heard it was based on Jane Austen's Emma. Had no interest in a teen movie otherwise and it ended up becoming one of my very favorite films. Loved watching you guys reacting to it!
look up lip sync battle with alicia silverstone...youll see the iconic outfit again...also look up the song " Crying", "Amazing" , and "Crazy" by Aerosmith. That is how her career really started. Also in "Crazy" it features Liv Tyler
Love this movie. When this came out, it actually felt like a throwback to the 80s teen comedies.....except better! The 80s teen comedies usually were raunchy and very much influenced by "Animal House" (great movie, but what it wreaked was not as distinguished more often than not!). In fact, Amy Heckerling (the director) had done exactly such a movie back in the 80s: "Fast Times At Ridemont High", one of the better of that ilk. So yeah, it does feel very 90s, but it definitely felt like a throwback to the 80s when it came out. There hadn't been a teen comedy in years, probably since "Ferris Bueller".
P.S. I LOVE that you knew who Wallace Shawn is, and as usual, you guys are not just film novices, you're filling in what you haven't seen before, or haven't seen in a while, LOVE that! PS: Would definitely be interested in your reaction to "Animal House" one day! Also your reaction to a couple of next level "teen comedy" masterpieces: George Lucas' "American Graffiti", which takes place last night of summer 1962.....and Richard Linklater's "Dazed And Confused" which takes place last day of school 1976. A total object lesson on how much changed culturally in just a decade. Fantasic movies with stacked casts of then-unknowns who went on to become big stars. Would be fascinated to see what you thought of those. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! LOVE YOU GUYS! You guys ARE nice guys!!!!!!
The Christian character looked like he was copying Brandon Walsh from 'Beverly Hills 90210.' Brandon and Dylan on that show both sported a James Dean look/style.
Nice job guys. You not only did an entertaining reaction, you noticed a few things I might have missed when I saw this movie. You're right the wardrobe was outstanding. Alicia Silverstone was perfect for this role. RIP Brittany Murphy. I've seen other younger reactors criticize the movie and dwell on the brother in law aspect. I will admit looking back on it now it was an odd choice to make the step brother the love interest. But it's Paul Rudd and he's so likable we'll still give it a pass right? 😆
It's based on Jane Austen's book Emma, where the love interest is her closest neighbor and a close friend of the family, even before his younger brother married her older sister. So he was a sort of older brother figure who was constantly stopping by and who tried to bring her back down to earth unlike everyone else in her life who thought she was perfect. I think the ex-wife's son who still has a great relationship with the main character's dad was a pretty neat way to translate that for modern audiences(the 15 year age gap would have been hard to swallow), although I personally would have made it clear she was in her last year of high school and he was in his first year of college.
Fun fact: When Cher mispronounces Haitians that was not intended for her to do so, but Alicia Silverstone really had no idea she was pronouncing it wrong. They told her, but decided to have her keep saying it wrong because it was just a great scene WITH the mispronunciation. Also, not to get too political, but whenever immigration comes up, my friends and I always share that line... . "It does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty!"
Him and Brittany Murphy did the voice of Joseph Gribble on 'King of the Hill.' Brittany did both Luanne, and Joseph before he hits puberty voices. The skateboard guy does Joseph's post puberty voice.
The first time I saw Paul Rudd in a movie. This typified the mid 90s, as things were changing from the quasi-80s feel to the more "extreme" stuff that we know the 90s for. It's a chick flick that is intelligent, despite the name. It's good teen satire.
"The Crush" is another Alicia Silverstone movie that is a must see, if you haven't already. She is fantastic for the role and the movie is great! Clueless was made in the 90s for the 90s (we and those of my generation, were teens in the 90s ourselves). It's nostalgic now.
Why does Tai have a cellphone on the movie poster when they never once show her character having one in the movie? Only Cher and Dionne are shown having a phone.
I love you guys reaction to the line, If anything happens to my daughter I own a 45 and a Shovel. You both where so shocked something like that was Said. I think what you fail to realize is how often Fathers actually said that to boys in the 80s and early 90s. Or how many may or may not have ended up in ditches. Though more like at the Alter weather they liked it or not.
Instead of pronouncing her own name, Alicia, like Alisha, she wants it pronounced Ahleeseeah. Seriously, that's how she pronounces her own first name. 🙄
@@TheBOG3 because Alicia is pronounced Al-ee-shee-ah. Which is different from how Alisha is pronounced because there is an extra letter i. They are two differently pronounced names, although they are somewhat quite similar. Hope this helps!!! :)
@@sketchycat6223 Alicia says her name is Ah lee see ah. No sha sound. Marcia and Marsha are pronounced the same but spelled different. Marcia Brady from 'The Brady Bunch.' @@TheBOG3 You realise there's this thing called "accents", right? The name Sean can also be spelled Shawn and Shaun, and it goes the other way as well. My name is pronounced one way in my language, another way in English, and when I went to Spain on holiday people pronounced it a third way. Americans are descended from a whole bunch of different countries and cultures, Alicia might be named after a grandmother from a country where it's pronounced Ah lee see ah for all you know.
@@korganrocks3995 Yes, I do. I was making fun of the Alicia Silverstone for being like Demi Moore who also pronounces her name differently than the masses do. Instead of Demi she says it's pronounced Deh mee. Jon Cryer made a film with her and had a short fling while filming the movie with her. He said that's how she says her name, but funnily enough he said her mother calls her Demi, just like the masses do.
"as if" didn't exactly come from this movie. This movie incorporated real life California valley girl slang in it, and then the movie was so well liked people everywhere started talking like that, but people were actually talking like that before the movie.
This movie was so ahead of it's time. Starbucks in the morning, Cellphones, wanting good grades, organic foods, touch screens, diet/working out, etc. Everything about this movie that was 'rich people' is basically the norm now. Except for the picking the lemons out your window for your tea lol.
Since you guys enjoy this movie so much, I highly recommend reacting to the 2020 version of Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy. Many other people like other versions better, but I personally think that one is the best--it's vibrant and hilarious, with lots of physical comedy. The themes and character arcs that you mentioned at the end are all in the original. Her love-interest is her brother-in-law's brother, rather than an ex-stepbrother. Now, it does have a spin-off you’ll want to check out eventually but by that point you’ll be hooked and looking for more, GUARANTEED!
The series might not fit their format, but perhaps they could at least watch Once More With Feeling.
@@awmperry not their current format maybe, but reaction channels can evolve and grow to cover t.v. as well as film and I think they’d react wonderfully to ‘Buffy’. I’ll keep my fingers crossed :-). 🫰
This, right here. And there's a raving fanbase that's constantly seeking out new blood -err, reactors. Ha.
Actually, I'd push for the movie over the tv show.
@@Lellela Can’t they do both? 😉
😂 "Tis a far far better thing doing stuff for other people" is from A Tale Of Two Cities. Just like Cher, I also had to read it in ninth grade.
Hey, Altaf here! Chris actually pointed this out the Garfield role after we were done shooting
@@NiceDudeMovieNight oh XD that's good at least.
anyway, ya'll have a good time. hope someone puts Rat Race or something else cool on the next poll.
Brittany Murphy was also on King of the Hill as Luanne
i was a freshman in high school in 1995 and all my friends were dressing like this movie. the plaid skirts, the knee socks and tiny backpacks lmao. fun fact: this movie is a modern adaptation of the jane austen novel Emma
“As if” was already a thing but this movie made it iconic
I was so in love with Alicia Silverstone back then!
I really enjoy your reaction video Nice Dudes. You're always so positive and maintain such high energy. Keep up the good work Dudes!
🙏❤️
Same here. Again and again, I have a blast watching movies outside of my usual comfort zone largely because I am watching it with you nice dudes.
I forgot Wallace Shawn was in this movie. When seen him i has like hey it's that weird Dr. Guy from young Sheldon
This was the prep 90's movie. For the alt 90's movie, see Mallrats.
90s movie dads were just such a mood. Growing up watching these as a young girl I thought them so mean. As a now nearly-40-something year old woman I'm just like "Sir, same."
"Dan Hedaya yelling on the phone in the background" appears in several movies. I look forward to you guys seeing Joe vs The Volcano.
This seems like our favorite kind of sub-genre hahaha
@@NiceDudeMovieNight I'm not arguing that with you
@@NiceDudeMovieNight - He also had some appearances on the TV show Cheers.
@@NiceDudeMovieNighthe's also great as the dad in Night at the Roxbury
it's not your film anymore
Every time you guys post a video I have to make time to sit down and watch it. You guys are great and I have discovered and re-discovered so many movies through you guys. Stay nice dudes.
You're very kind!! Thank you for hanging out and watching movies with us
Exactly!!XooX
I watch a number of movie reaction channels because I'm in my mid 40s and I don't know anyone who hasn't seen the movies I like. Your channel has really shot up in my list of favorite reactors. Thank you.
What an honor! Thank you so much
You guys were so much fun to watch.
This movie makes me love humanity.
That transition into the Babbel ad read was perfect!
Alaia was popular with the bandage dresses and Naomi Campbell was the designer's personal muse.
Austen*
This movie is actually based on Emma by Jane Austen which explains why as you mentioned, the values of the movie seem timeless. It's because they are.
I love this movie. This is like if mean girls were from the perspective of the popular girl character and make the popular girl character likable
This movie is actually a modern version of Jane Austen's Emma!
I went to see this in the movie theater only because I heard it was based on Jane Austen's Emma. Had no interest in a teen movie otherwise and it ended up becoming one of my very favorite films. Loved watching you guys reacting to it!
Clueless is genuinely one of the best movies ever made
look up lip sync battle with alicia silverstone...youll see the iconic outfit again...also look up the song " Crying", "Amazing" , and "Crazy" by Aerosmith.
Your reactions are just really fun - you're so engaged and interested and always look like you're having a great time!
I'm pretty sure "you're a virgin who can't drive" is the movie line I've quoted the most of all time
A good Alicia Silverstone movie is Blast from the Past
plot based on jane austen's 'emma,' and does it better than 'period films' ever did.
When yoy said, " He's a James Dean type." in my head I went, "More like Rock Hudson. " 😏
The Christian character looked like he was copying Brandon Walsh from 'Beverly Hills 90210.' Brandon and Dylan on that show both sported a James Dean look/style.
The first time I got on the freeway was an accident and I got off at the first exit I could and then broke down crying lol
Possibly one of my favourite films ever. It’s funny and kind of sweet.
The stoner skater boyfriend was in a 2001 movie with Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan “Kate and Leopold.”
Sweet movie!!!
“Do you like Billie Holiday?”
“I love him”
I haven't seen this movie and you know it's 90's when the Bosstones make a cameo.
Exactly right the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
This movie is legitimately amazing
You guys are so fun to watch react just genuinely having a good time and not taking it too serious! Subbed
So glad a new one came out, love both of y’all’s work
Fun fact: Alicia mispronounced the word Haitians for real, but the director thought it was so funny that she kept it in.
I laughed out loud at your Danny Ocean heist line 😂
"The Crush" is another Alicia Silverstone movie that is a must see, if you haven't already. She is fantastic for the role and the movie is great! Clueless was made in the 90s for the 90s (we and those of my generation, were teens in the 90s ourselves). It's nostalgic now.
I saw this movie with my cousin in 1995. I don't know what we were expecting, but he was lukewarm about the movie afterwards. But I loved it!
just randomly stumbled upon your channel but you guys are so fun to watch!
I got that pen when I was in 4th grade BECAUSE of Cher. They sold them at Limited Too. I had a pink one and a blue one
I was wondering when you guys would get around to reviewing this !!! Awesome 👏 movie classic !
I love this movie. Paul Rudd so cute❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was 21 when this came out. I feel ancient now. Love this movie though. Paul Rudd was lovely in this.
Breckin Meyer is an American treasure.
Great reaction guys! I really loved how you inserted film stills when you were reviewing. Thanks for sharing with all of if us 😊
Boys - _please_ tell me you know this was a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.
Your "movies that end on a kiss" line makes me recommend Pacific Rim. Great movie.
The fact that Alicia actually mispronounced Haitians when reading the script and they decided to change it to keep it in the movie as a funny moment
Marcia Brady from 'The Brady Bunch.' Traditionally Alicia and Alisha are pronounced the same. No one pronounces Felicia any way other than Fah lee sha. Patricia is Pa trish ah.
@@TheBOG3 You realise there's this thing called "accents", right? The same word or name can be pronounced very differently in different parts of the same country, not to mention in different languages.
Paul Rudd was ny first celebrity crush and it was because of this movie.
So nice your video guys! Thanks a lot!
Another great 90s film to watch is Jawbreaker
Clueless to Mean Girls:
Cher Horowitz=Regina George
Tai Frasier=Cady Heron
Dionne Davenport=Gretchen Wieners
Amber Mariens=Karen Smith
My sister watched this movie so many times growing up.
If I remember correctly this was Rudd's breakout role.
Did you guys already watched A Night at the Roxbury?? Is the same dad and he is even better 😂😂
The Brady Bunch Movie is also top 3 for most 90's looking/sounding movie. Definitely recommend lol
This is a modern version of Jane Austen' Emma.
"as if" didn't exactly come from this movie. This movie incorporated real life California valley girl slang in it, and then the movie was so well liked people everywhere started talking like that, but people were actually talking like that before the movie.
I love how nobody says "literally" in the whole movie. Miss those days.
Did you also recognize Jeremy Sisto from Law and Order? That one trips me out.
This movie was so ahead of it's time. Starbucks in the morning, Cellphones, wanting good grades, organic foods, touch screens, diet/working out, etc. Everything about this movie that was 'rich people' is basically the norm now. Except for the picking the lemons out your window for your tea lol.
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist will definitely make you guys laugh. My friends and I watch it every guys night and it never fails to make us bust up
I remember a version where you could see the boom mics in the first kiss scene with cher and josh.
love you guys, always look forward to watching your stuff. Keep up the good work!
It would be fun to see a reaction by someone who already knows the modern-day version of the story!
"It's like the cast of a Scream movie." I laughed so hard at thar! LOL!
