You sold out darling!
One word, that beautifully describes and explains, why I LOVE this movie SO MUCH:
*E S C A P I S M* ! ! !
Halliday’s final message was pretty classic for old gamers: Thank you for playing.
my tears flowed when I heard these words in the cinema :(((
It's even more touching in the Audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.

If you liked this, I’m pretty sure you’d love Alita: Battle Angel.
Oh yes! Yes, Alita next please!
A collegue once showed me the first issue of the graphic novel.
It was awesome!!
Yes! I just re-watched Alita: Battle Angel and it is still a great movie.
great movie
not even close to the same calibre of movie... alita battle angel sucked major D compared to thsis aka Ready Player One
First and foremost I love the book forever. No comparison. However, I loved the movie too. I had never in my life been so hyped for a movie. Watching it was like a cathartic experience for me in a time when I was not in the greatest place mentally and emotionally. Glad you liked the movie and the tie in with the sponsor was pretty funny too.
Lou: That was a great book. Ever read, Little Brother (by Corey Doctorow)? It's a little like this, but not immersive. It's a lot like Pokemon Go.
Ender's Game is pretty awesome, too, though the movie was so-so
I'm afraid I hate this movie. I find this movie an insult to one of my favorite books, but if you can enjoy it I envy you because this is the only time I ever wanted a way to get my money back from the theater.
Great book. Movie was good in it's own way.
This book was amazing! I read it in 3 days, that's very quick for me, and it only took me that long because I had to work. I read it immediately after reading The Martian, and I remember thinking, "There's no way this book can be as good as The Martian was." It wasn't... It was far better!
Are you all aware that the 2nd book came out a few months ago? Ready Player Two.
It amazes me that this movie was ever made given the sheer mountain of material it draws from be it story's to movie / anime characters... and hell I am glad Spielberg had the power to make it
Exactly, the studio must have had to jump through quite a few hoops to license a lot of the pop culture references, if you write a book you can reference anything you want to but if you make a movie you face a quagmire of legality if you want to portray someone else's characters or creations on screen. This is why a lot of books are regarded as "un-filmable".
Well, having Spielberg on board helps a lot! He directed or produced or has connections to a lot of the movies that were referenced.
this movie was a book. it needed to wait till film technology was able to make it happen. thats why james cameron waited so long to make avatar 2.
They changed quite a bit from the book Sorento's motives, the quest that the players do, Ogden morrow James holidays best friend is way less in the movie than he was in the book. It's not a bad movie it just doesn't really adapt that much from the book.
They did have to get permission for every single reference. Some things didn't make the movie...
This is one of those rare cases where the book and the movie were both wonderful. They were, of course, very different, but still very good. I know a lot of people hated the sequel to the book, but I liked it; despite its flaws. It will be interesting to see if the sequel makes it to theaters.
What do you reckon the main sticking point was, in the sequel, @Rabid Tribble ?
I didn't hate RP2. It's a good book, it's just not RP1, which is almost a perfect book.
@@jkhoover i know what you mean. RP2 was okay but nothing special. RP2 dor me was a bit too fast and didnt go into enough detail. The Arty and Percy thing was a bit forced and later to quick resolved. And i would have loved to hear more about the other Party on their quest (I dont remember their name).
It was an okay book i think. RP1 was much better.
(I hope my English wasn´t to bad ; ))
@@jackpratchett1422 It was the Lo five as the main group was the hi five
I think the second book was made with a movie in mind which kind of ruins it in a way whereas the first one obviously wasn't which is why they are so different. Don't get me wrong I liked RP2 but a lot felt forced and I honestly could have done without the hard on for Tolkien but thats just my personal opinion. The prince stuff as well for me. Didnt click with me like the original books subject matter did. It did a lot right but also quite a bit wrong as well. Also Parzival seemingly didn't learn a damn thing from the first book which is kind of undermines his character development going from 1 to 2.
Ughhh I’m now one of those guys that says “The book was way better!!!!!” Love the movie, but read the book.
Ditto, I think you would enjoyed it.
yes the book and its sequel were really good and i would say that everyone should read them if they like the movie
"One of those guys"? That's everybody. I've never heard anybody say that the movie is better.
I was gifted the book, gonna start reading it!!!
@@javiermonarrez8666 You won't put it down!
I am so glad you got to catch this one, it felt like a return to Spielberg-style adventure and warmth. Sure, it's a lot different from the book (which I think is a good thing), but that's why it's a movie! The only thing I don't like is I can't get into this OASIS myself, I wanna get me a Megaman arm cannon and a Terror Mask from Splatterhouse and a Streets of Rage length of pipe and a Castlevania chain whip-- man, what would YOU want? I remember seeing this in theaters and people randomly going bananas from various references. The Zemeckis Cube bit made the whole audience like, inhale at once.. and my friend is a major Gundam head, and when the RX-78-2 leapt out of the Serenity, he went NUTS! good god, I love this movie, thank you for playing!
I never read the book but as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s I had the same reaction you did lol. I smiled for days. This was what we used to call a
“feel good movie”.
I was skeptical about this movie at first but now it's one of my favorites.
The Iron Giant was not in the book. Instead it was the classic '66 Japanese 50 foot hero Ultraman. But the rights are so convoluted that they couldn't get permission to include him in the movie, so enter the Iron Giant instead.
Genuinely fun, poignant, and surprisingly earnest movie. I love the touch of mystery over what the hell Anorak/Oasis!Halliday even was. I love the performances by Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg, especially Pegg when Wade tells him his insight into Halliday's biggest regret, just the right level of emotion
If you loved the movie, you HAVE to read the book! It's totally different and way better! The movie is really good, but it's more or less a whole new story. They are both good but the book wins in the end because it have more of EVERYTHING you loved in this movie. It helps to have grown up in the 80:s I guess. 😉
The book is so good!
You are completely correct my friend
I'm not a reader at all but I got this book in middle school and absolutely loved it. I always dreaded putting it down to go to the next class
I'm an 01 kid, but it was still such a fun and amazing book
The book was fantastic but I was so dissapointed by the movie. A lot of it was filmed in my city Birmingham and people were tweeting that they saw a guy that looked like Steven Spielberg in Boots the Chemist, and they were indeed correct, it was him. Nice reaction though. xx
@Gerald H absolutely. As a stand alone movie I enjoyed it, but being of a certain age hehe, I was more absorbed with the book, and ironically it was a youngish guy in Waterstones book shop that recommended the book to me.... I'm now thinking he must've known the many references in the book would appeal to someone of my age haha.
Steven King didn't hate his novel Shining, he hated the movie.

Stephen. Not Steven
@@themiIes Im not sure there is anyone out there that actually calls him Stephen.
@@noble_hermit2133 normal and respectful people do because that is his name
Just gonna drop some key differences form the book:
All the riddles were different
Parzival was a student who cracked the first riddle while daydreaming in class
I-Rok was a friend of Aech who was only in a few chapters. He found out Parzival cracked the first riddle and sold him out to IOI for a ton of money then was never heard from for the rest of the book
Parzival and Art3mis did go dancing together and Parzival did reveal his real name, but they were there because it was Ogden Morrow's birthday and he invited them
Daito was murdered by IOI
Parzival was the one who was captured by IOI. This was intentional as he wanted to steal information, and he was using a false identity so they didn't know it was him
There's a lot more, but I'll leave it at that
Why would you leave these spoilers? Why is everyone so determined to spoil everything? Why not just say, "Hey, the book is amazing, and is really different. I highly suggest reading it! You'll love it". But no, you have to, I guess, demonstrate that you read the book? I don't understand it!
Sounds like I lucked out in seeing the movie and not reading the book.
@@jkhoover The persons RUclips Name alone answers your question that is because
EvilOdysseus is Evil 🧐
Sounds great, it's cool how the movie managed to use original material with new circumstances.
@@IvanTeslenko They weren't spoilers for me. I read the book years ago. I'm just tired of people being determined to prove they know something you don't and spoiling books, movies, etc. There's no reason to leave a complete list of spoilers in my opinion, but maybe I'm just being too sensitive.
This is a fun movie so many references from Back to the future to Star Trek to Mortal Kombat to LOTR to Godzilla to Chucky just so many its ridiculous. Great reaction Vicky! 😊
“I can’t look a this.”
*continues to look.”
Literally the best type of moments right there!
My favourite pop culture reference: When the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman TV show hits the breaks in the opening race scene, it's tires squeal in the rhythm of the Batman theme song.
Nice reaction. You should read the book. I know everyone says that ‘the book is better’ whenever there is a film made based on a book but in this case it’s really true. They changed a lot but I understand why they did it as the book wouldn’t translate to a film that well
It’s one of Spielberg’s worst movies. Just utter rubbish
Sorento: murders a lot of people
VKunia: Wait. That's illegal.
Hey I have to confess, as a 80s kid when I saw the RX-78-2 Gundam appear (19:16), I burst into tears. It was my childhood come to life.
I genuinely lol'd at the part when everyone is running over the hill at the final fight scene and you played that royalty free music instead of can Halen and when they're playing adventure and you super imposed the commercial on the tv 😂😂
There are so many pop culture references in this movie, it's almost impossible to spot them all. Right around the time you mentioned them using Tracer and Overwatch characters, I saw Halo Spartans and grunts, Spawn, a gremlin, etc. Aech's shop had Lonestar's Winnebago from Spaceballs, a classic Battlestar Galactica Viper fighter, ED-209 from Robocop, a space pod from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and probably others. The gun that Parcival uses to shoot Artemis is a blaster from the classic Battlestar Galactica. In the background of the apartment at the end, there was a Klingon Batt'leth and Robby the Robot visible.
This is a fun movie. Different than the book but it stands on its own. Glad that you enjoyed it.
Pt 2 is on the way :):)
It's true what they say. Almost no movie/ series can ever live up to the book. Having read the book before, I couldn't even complete the movie. I found it that unwatchable
When they had that race, I had enough... Who made that movie, not only read the book but chose to do something that the book clearly stated that it shouldn't happen
The race triggered me too. That combined with Percival's mansplaining attempt to Artemis in the archive made me not finish the movie.
The book is better…
You should react to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It’s so similar because it has every character you might know.
Oh god no
"So this man is in love with a twitch streamer, huh ?"
*Me sitting here watching your video* 😐😅

Ohhhh I am getting some good gifs from this one. I can already tell.
Show of hands: How many 80's geeks recognized the "code" as Merlin's spell from Excalibur (1981) and want VK to put it on her list?
not only recognise it.. know it by heart. You never know when you need to call the breath of the dragon.
On the movie, loved it, because it not only touches on every pop culture icon I loved, including Merlin's spell, but i also found my way into the secret room on the Atari 2600 back in the day. It felt like this movie was speaking to me, but I have 2 gripes. 1. the Krull blade didn't get enough recognition 2. He misused the Holy hand Grenade. The Holy Book of Armaments CLEARLY states that one must count to 3 (they were quit clear on this point lol), so the grenade should not have worked and they should have lost the Oasis!
Excalibur indeed should be her next

The effects are amazing and all the pop culture references are pretty fun. You really need multiple viewings to catch them all. Also it seems Spielberg was living vicariously through his lead actor, as he looks exactly like him when he was younger. 😆
Maybe that's the lesson.. Follow passion rather than money.
I know, I wonder if Spielberg was already searching for actors for Fabelmans and remembered this guy because he was considering him for Fabelmans. 😆
The irony is the "Easter Egg" isn't really what it is called. Its just a quest. It has a clear objective and value. Plus... he talked about it, making it less of an Easter Egg.
Also got to love Hollywood's "Ugly" girl Artemis. She's supposed to have a really messed up face and that's how Hollywood interpreted it.
Well how "ugly" was her face in the book?
In the book her avatar is nearly exactly like her IRL. Her avatar doesn’t have the wine birthmark on the face is really the only difference.
right, it's this supposedly hideous birthmark that is so light in color it can only be seen in direct sunlight and only if the girl pulls her hair back. Other than this grotesque deformity she's one of the cutest girls you'll ever see.
@@BrianNIL oh I get it. It's barely noticeable but she thinks it's god awful.
@@TheMrPeteChannel right! The op also makes the point that Hollywood ugly isn't the same as real life ugly, in other words most actresses are beautiful so the most minor flaw is "ugly"
Now imagine that you grew up in the 80's and that this is how you want to actually live the dream :P
To this day people are still finding Easter eggs in this movie. xD
This whole movie is "Oh that's from the thing I love!"
[ hate that you don't know that this is a book...

I been trying to watch this reaction for days but work prevented me. Anyways. I love this movie. Watched it multiple times. It's too much fun. If only vr was that immersive and free flowing. It's just so underwhelming after watching this movie. I really wish the movie had a second part.
I have to admit, I am not a big fan of this adaptation. I understand things need to be changed from a book too a movie, and I am very forgiving of changes as long as they try to keep the tone the same. But in my opinion, this movie changes the core experience too much. Don't get me wrong, it is still very enjoyable and has some outstanding visuals! But the book came across to me as a 'puzzle adventure' where it was more important too be smart with plenty of riddles along the way. The movie is much more of an 'action adventure' where speed and big explosions are par for the course.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the movie. (I watched it 3 times in theatres!) But I love the book so much more. The book has so much more of an adventure vibe than the movie. No spoilers, but the way they finally all meet up in the book is so much more satisfying also. The tasks for the key (and the subsequent tasks after each one) are so much better in my opinion also. To me the book has a bit darker side to it also.
Yes! So agree with you. There was a sort of mystery and riddle type motif for the book and it was more about solving it and taking its time. The people behind the movie didn't trust the audience and ditched all that for razzle dazzle.
@@OUsniper1 Oh I completely agree. It was a good movie... I enjoyed it a great deal. But it had a very different feeling from the book, and comparing the two, the book was much better. Don't get me wrong, the battle scene at the end of the movie was outstanding! But I much enjoyed the plot, direction, events and general feeling of the book.
@@RedKytten Nice! High Five! (pun intended)
This movie is fun, i kinda wish it was a tv series so that: the hunt is longer, the characters more developed and more cult worlds get explored. Its a killer concept.
This movie Is basically a copy of Sword Art Online so if you want to watch a series you might as well watch that, lol.
My guess would be that it'd be too expensive. Its a show that has all of these other movies, games, etc characters/concepts within it would be a lot of work.
@@fnx427 Actually, it's an adaptation of the novel by the same name, which came out before Sword Art Online.
It may be very dated but you absolutely need to watch The Last Starfighter from 1984. A must for any gamer and it's so earnest and charming. Disney's Tron is pretty good too, way ahead of it's time.
The thing the China town before King Kong shows up if you probably don’t know this, is the Tyrannosaurus Rex from Jurassic Park
Edit: and if you have the time, I highly recommend you watching the Jurassic Park movies
I didn't like it at first but the more I rewatch it through reactors I have actually really begun to love it. I am a big fan of the book and so when they didn't follow a lot of things like the Lance fight and so many of the other turns or things like making Artemis's scar smaller etc I got really defensive.
This is truly a charming and good movie like you said, the book is still different and really good!
In real life, there is a saying that goes like this: "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away." I guess in the dystopian near future of this movie, it's more like: "When seconds count, the police are only hours or days away."
imo i enjoyed the film but for sure there is decent amount of changes. this is from what i remember from the book. note: very long time i last heard the book so maybe missing.
-the irl world: the world is much more bleaker and depressing then what you saw in the film. about all vr gear isnt moveable like what you see here but mostly on chairs. so most ppl spend 90% of their life sitting on the chair in the oasis.
-pop culture: so the book is also filled with pop culture stuff but you dont see stuff like say overwatch for example and thats mainly bacause on when the book was release. the big fight involving mecha godzilla did happen but some major changes. 1. daito did not fight mecha godzilla in the gundam.... because he is dead. will explain that below. 2. sho augmented power mech is Brave Raideen. unless you are super into vintage mecha animes you will know this mech. 3. there was no iron giant fight instead wade was ultraman. another known japanese series. for artemis this i kinda forgot but i think she also picked a gundam called noble gundam from an old series titled G Gundam. the book is filled with other vintage animes, games, dungeons and dragons references which one of them was the first puzzle they changed which will explain that too.
-daito dead: so similar to how they tracked wade here in the book they found daito in irl. they broke into his apartment, grabbed him and tossed him over the apartment railing and he died when he hit the pavement. im not joking. sho had to lay low when he heard daito "died" but knew he was murdered since some ppl including daito parents think daito commited suicide. how sho knows? because they were online together when suddenly sho heard what sounds like a scuffle, daito character stopped moving and from the mic heard a drop which indicates daito tossed over the railing. when he met up with parzival this is where sho gave parzival the ultraman augment item which daito was gonna use in the future.
-the easter eggs: so the first two are vastly different from the film. note: i only remember the first puzzle. i forgot the second one but for sure it wasnt shining involved. puzzle 1 involved finding a old dungeon from the dungeon and dragon book called The Tomb of Horrors. this was a well known adventure mainly it was meant for max lvl characters and many traps/monsters were design to kill the players fast. so max lvl players need to be fully prepared. parzival went in and met the lich which was the last boss in ToH and instead of fighting it hand to hand or spells the lich challenge him to a game of Joust which is an old arcade game.
-the 1up coin: so the coin he got from the robotic butler is different. in the book he got it from playing an arcade game i think was pacman mainly he thought it was the 2nd puzzle. when he beat the high score all he got was a game token and he thought was useless but kept it as trophy. he didnt realize that when the server was wiped that the coin revived him.
-the final battle irl: so it wasnt a car chase. literaly if i remember right they went to the mansion thats owned by haliday old friend. wade and his friends stayed there, go into the oasis and fight at the battlefield.
-captured: here artemis was captured and sent to the company facilities but in the book it was wade that got captured and he did it on purpose. he planned ahead so he can get in, grabbed something which i forgot and get out which he succeeded.
there is probably more major changes im missing but those the ones i can remember the most and best of my knowledge on it.
Coming up soon... Ready Player Two.. Covid put it on ice temporarily ..
Fact: the real VR nowadays is not developed to that point
Unless you play the omni it's super similar

Vr chat is the closest we have to the oasis right now
I never read the book. What pulled me in was the trailer I saw and I could hear a background music in the trailer...a familiar chime and later I realized rewatching it I was hearing the soft chimes of "Pure Imagination" from the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The comparison between Halliday and Willy Wonka was a genius mix. After that, I was hooked and wanted to see it. The parallels are spot on and sometimes I've even called it a sci-fi reinterpretation.
Spielberg actually wanted Gene Wilder to play Halliday. Gene couldnt as he was too old
VRchat is somewhat of an oasis today :) Also the book that this movie was based on is absolutely amazing. I loved the adaptation though! Great movie.
Idk if anyone else has mentioned it but you should react to "Ender's Game" it's another great Sci-fi

There are so many comments on videos about Ready Player One with people calling it their favorite movie or one of their favorites. I saw it in theaters, but I recognized that the marketing didn't really find a good hook, or bombard people enough to get them to see the movie. It had a March release date, which isn't the best time of the year for creating hype. I hope people keep discovering it and it builds up a bigger and bigger following over time. It seems to be slowly happening, but it's uncertain if that momentum can continue when new movies are constantly being put up. I thought Ant-Man: Quantumania shamelessly ripped off major aspects of the final battle in RP1 (the broadcast speech rallying all the citizens to come to Kang's HQ, and the energy bubble protecting it), so at least someone in Hollywood still remembers this movie.
Released in 3D in cinemas
Thank you for this review, but I feel I must point out a minor error you made right at the beginning, in saying that it was made in 2018, as it was actually shot in 2016.
I know this as most (although not all) of the real-life street and building scenes were filmed in Birmingham in the UK, and as I lived in an area they used for most of the location shots, I can remember the road closures that were needed for the filming.
I actually have an off screen photo (I didn't take it) of Tye Sheridan while walking on Ludgate Hill in the Jewelry Quarter in the city, just around the corner from Livery St, where they filmed the van/'IOI car chase towards the end.
Finally, when you see Wade getting the egg and you see the police turning up at the Stacks, that was filmed underneath Junction 6 of the M6 motorway in Birmingham, the famous Spaghetti Junction.
2016 was an interesting year to drive around the city center.
For other great movies that feature VR I nominate Tron, Tron 2.0 and The Lawnmower Man 2, The Lawnmower Man is an exceptional movie in itself but only the sequel features VR.
15:55 "Cease" mean's to stop..... So when you say "This movie ceases to amaze me" meants it stops your amazement lol. I know you meant to say "This movie NEVER ceases to amaze me." K thx bye
You should watch Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories on NBC (originally 1985 to 1987).
The final scene when Halliday says “Thank you for playing my game”, always hits me from hearing a line from someone you look up to and know everything about.
Try looking for RUclips vids trying to ID each pop culture reference. It’s mind numbing.
The worst part of this movie was the people who read the book whining. As with most books that are turned into movie, it will never be exactly like the book.
