It’s a critical time for Europe. In the recent European Union elections, voters unhappy with the establishment status quo delivered historic gains for far-right, nationalist parties in countries like France and Germany. But a fractured EU Parliament makes it harder for the ruling centrist coalition to deliver on key priorities like immigration reform and the Green deal. Can the 27 member states come together to address big challenges?
On GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola discusses Europe’s future amid an ongoing migrant crisis, the war in Ukraine, and an economic slowdown. The EU is the world’s largest trading bloc and a regulatory superpower, but Metsola says Europe needs to strengthen its strategic autonomy to avoid getting squeezed by the US and China. Part of that vision includes Ukraine joining the European Union, which Metsola tells Bremmer is unequivocably “win-win” for both sides. But finding consensus among so many countries, cultures, and political parties in the EU government can be a major challenge.
“We’re not yet coherent, I think we've weakened ourselves by being a cacophony of what we think we want,” Metsola says, "We still have not, as a European Union, become better as a whole than individual countries.“

On the EU member states' economic, technological and innovative strength, EU should have been a superpower for decades. But since the 1990's, European political leaders have all signed up to the CIA/Pentagon sponsored retirement scheme. With promises of retirement villas, consultant roles and book deals after their political career, EU have been led to rot since.

Thanks to the US, by provoking Russia for war by expanding NATO to its doorstep, not only has Europe become more dependent on USA for its security, but by banning cheap oil and gas from Russia (by destroying Nord Stream gas pipeline), Europe has also become dependent on USA for energy. Europe still heavily depends on Russia and Ukraine to a large extent for its food security. Remember that Europe follows USA in terms of diplomacy too, but is also completely dependent on China in terms of manufacturing. Especially small member State , like Hungary , Slovakia , Bulgaria , Austria are looking for some kind of of-ramp , to leave EU and join BRICS . And after them more countries will follow and then EU will cease to exist . EU was good project at beginning , but lately became just political tool for US , against Russia , what greatly affected economy of every member State.

Both these characters are deluded. The EU is a trading block like NAFTA, but with delusions of grandeur. It is geopolitically irrelevant. Britain and Germany just agreed on a bilateral defence alliance without consulting the EU. The parliament is a talking shop and can't propose legislation. She represents Malta which has a population of 500,000, it only joined in 2004. It doesn't have an army. Who is going to defend Ukraine? Malta? Bremmer is out of touch. Ukraine's population is no longer 50 million, according to Trading Economics it is 34 million.

are discussing their ownership of resources.
The West will be left out of World Trade by their Fiat Currency lacking support.

Europe was the most developed continent, together with northern India and the Central-Northern Plains of China, in the medieval times. In the mid 1400s, right before the discovery of America by the Europeans, the Italian Peninsula was the second biggest global gdp, right behind Ming China. When Europe was inventing the mechanic writing stamp, automatic fountains, water mills for grain manufacturing and massive galleons that couldn't be compared to any other boat on the planet except for the Ming's treasure ships - the Americas, the African continent, most of Asia, and Oceania were all centuries behind, some even in the bronze age.
So this idea that Europe built its wealth on Colonial Exploitation can only be believed by people who have ZERO knowledge of pre-1492 history. During the Roman Empire, the Romans had the biggest gdp, side by side with the Han Dynasty. In the early 600s and late 800s, the Eastern Roman Empire based in Constantinople was one of the most advanced and prosperous polities on the planet. In the 300s B.C. Europeans were creating some of the most realistic statues seen in the history of arts, out of bronze, in Greece. In the 1400s Europeans were painting portraits and landscapes so precise, detailed and realistic, that no other art style on the planet could compare. Until the 1600s, the only countries that benefited from Colonialism were Portugal and Spain. Until the 1800s there had been only 5 european countries that had successfully established colonies. FIVE. Out of 50 total countries today in Europe. The colonisation of Africa was cemented in 1878, with the Berlin Conference. By 1950 decolonization was in full effect across Africa. That means it lasted for less than 80 years. So...Wtf are you talking about?

European leaders all failed to miss the most important point how to becoming a global power. Any nation striving to become a global power, meaning building up super economic strength, it must have a global vision. It must cooperate and be friends with all other nations. It must respect the other nations believing that they have the right to elect a system suitable for themselves and set aside political differences. Let's take motor industry for example. No nation could rely on its internal market even to survive. By inserting sanctions on countries with polical differences, we are ruining that potential market. Furthermore, European leaders must recognise that historically they are imperialists. They have to work twice as hard to gain trust and confidence from other nations specially those whom they have invaded in the past.

Here in germany extremist parties are defined by the constitution as anti-democratic, which are willing to use violence to topple the state, those are forbidden no matter if extrem left or extrem right. We have the Constitutional Protection Agency which should a party become a suspected case, would bring that party under survialance and if viable evidence would be found under our law, then would start a law suit at the Bundesverfassungsgericht aka Federal Constitutional Court, which then looks at the evidence, hears the arguments from all sides and then decides.

Becoming a superpower is not one of the EU's aims. These aims are listed in the treaty of the EU:
    1. The Union's aim is to promote peace, its values and the well-being of its peoples.
    2. The Union shall offer its citizens an area of freedom, security and justice without internal frontiers, in which the free movement of persons is ensured in conjunction with appropriate measures with respect to external border controls, asylum, immigration and the prevention and combating of crime.

It shall work for the sustainable development of Europe based on balanced economic growth and price stability, a highly competitive social market economy, aiming at full employment and social progress, and a high level of protection and improvement of the quality of the environment. It shall promote scientific and technological advance.
It shall combat social exclusion and discrimination, and shall promote social justice and protection, equality between women and men, solidarity between generations and protection of the rights of the child.
It shall promote economic, social and territorial cohesion, and solidarity among Member States.
It shall respect its rich cultural and linguistic diversity, and shall ensure that Europe's cultural heritage is safeguarded and enhanced.
    4. The Union shall establish an economic and monetary union whose currency is the euro.
    5. In its relations with the wider world, the Union shall uphold and promote its values and interests and contribute to the protection of its citizens. It shall contribute to peace, security, the sustainable development of the Earth, solidarity and mutual respect among peoples, free and fair trade, eradication of poverty and the protection of human rights, in particular the rights of the child, as well as to the strict observance and the development of international law, including respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Sofar the EU isn't and it is questionable it will ever be one. Idears, plans and attempts for joint coherent military are in the works for maybe 20 years or so and sofar we have not really much to show for, but Putin knocking at our eastern borders sure renewed and energized those attempts. Question then though would be if it would just be a territorial defense force for mainland europe, would it include holdings beyond geographic europe, would it not just be defensivly usable and many more aspects.
One of the reasons why this is so difficult and this is somethig i repeatidly see US citizens not thinking of, europes 27 member states have 27 different languages, each one with several dialects depending on region. So comunication is a pain. By now i think most european nations have an educational system adopted where at least one other european nation is tought, that though still doesn't gurantee that the soldiers will therefor have all the same language studied besides their own.
Technology is more and more making this a none issue though so i would imagine within the next 10 years some news on that topic.

      Sweden:
Sweden had a long history of neutrality, but after the end of the Cold War, it deepened its cooperation with NATO through the Partnership for Peace program and took part in NATO-led missions (such as in Afghanistan). However, the idea of full membership remained a contentious issue, with a significant portion of the population and political elites favoring continued non-alignment. There were periodic discussions about joining NATO, but the government did not pursue it as a policy.
      Finland:
Finland also had a policy of military non-alignment but shared a long border with Russia and had historical reasons to be cautious about its relations with Moscow. Finland cooperated with NATO through joint exercises and partnerships, but there was no active pursuit of membership before 2022. The idea of joining NATO was debated occasionally, but like in Sweden, there wasn't widespread political or public support for it. Finnish leaders were careful to balance security cooperation with the West while avoiding moves that could provoke Russia.
Key Change After the Ukraine War:
Russia's invasion of Ukraine marked a turning point. Both Sweden and Finland reassessed their security policies, and public and political support for NATO membership surged dramatically. The war underscored the risks of military non-alignment in the face of an aggressive Russia, leading both countries to apply for NATO membership in May 2022. This was a direct consequence of the war, rather than a goal they had been actively working towards before it began.

Should it not go along EU goals or go against federal and democratic principles, you bet this wont become reality or would be removed soon after.
