  • As Election Day approaches, freedom is on the ballot. Trump and Harris offer starkly different visions for the country and what freedom means to them. The question is, which version of freedom will voters pick?

On GZERO World with ‪@Ian_Bremmer‬, we're mere weeks away from Election Day in one of the closest and most tumultuous national elections in American history. Both candidates are making their pitches to voters, and show guest, author and historian Timothy Snyder, argues that what they're really pitching are two different versions of freedom. Snyder discusses the election by drawing from his latest book, “On Freedom,” an exploration into how freedom is used-and often misused-in society and politics.
Snyder argues that America would do well to think about freedom in a more positive light, particularly in terms of freedom "to" rather than freedom "from." Freedom "to" vote, to control your own body, to love whom you want." Rather than freedom "from" oppression, for instance. “Freedom is about a future which is better than the present. Freedom is about all the good things that we might know about and all the good things we have yet to discover. It's not about anger, it's not about barriers.”
In taking a bird’s eye view of the many ways freedom can be interpreted, Snyder zeros in on Ukraine. He reflects on how Ukrainians often use the word “de-occupation” instead of liberation, because he believes that freedom is means towards a better future, rather than the end goal. “The word de-occupation reminds you that that is still just the beginning. You have to clear the rubble, and rebuild the playgrounds, and the buses and the trains have to start running again.”

I wonder if that is not freedom but privilege... The privilege to ignore genocide vs. the freedom to act in the interest of collective freedom, including the goal to expand the freedom of others' based on the view that freedom should be collective.

"Freedom" is just an slogan american politicians use to exhaustion for electoral purposes.
Higher interests that seldon relates to "freedom" are at play when politicians rise to power...

What about forced mobilisation, it's definitely not "freedom from", is it "freedom to" then? What happens if a person looses a limb?
What freedom does they have then? Do you know how much veterans are paid in Ukraine? Is this a freedom?

I am concerned that "freedom to" involves government wealth redistribution. In principle it's taking from some to give to others. I don't think people should be forced to do that. If they don't want to. I get that it's politically necessary to some degree. But it carries an intrinsic moral issue that "freedom from" does not. Freedom from doesn't require you to take something from anyone to work. It's just requires the government to not tell people how to live their lives.

Freedom from the abuse of private power requires regulation of wealth and social status aka telling someone what to do. Not every tyrant is a government officer.

As a veteran, I will only vote for candidates that support the rule of law. Harris does, as she has demonstrated as a prosecutor, attorney general and VP. The orange felon does not, as demonstrated by criminal offenses, sexual assault, attacks on confidence in our election systems and attacks on immigrants. 🙏🏻🇺🇸

Abortion is clearly freedom from as well. Freedom from the government stopping you from having whatever medical procedures you want. While we're at it on that one, they should legalize most voluntary medical treatments and substances. They need to keep out of people's personal business.

Let's explore (muddy) "freedom" with a little division of "freedom from" and "freedom to". When really, those are the same thing being convoluted with other unrelated "pluralist" concepts. Like, the chickening and the egging.
Look. You people accept unfree society. And this is you justifying it.
