  • 1915 SAN FRANCISCO (March Song)
    (P. I. Jacoby)
Sung by Henry Burr and Albert Campbell
    Columbia, A-1623 (39596), 1914.
Please watch in high-definition (720p) for best picture quality.
Quite a few songs were written for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, held in San Francisco from February 20 to December 4, 1915. This rousing "march song" was the first-prize winner in a contest held by a San Francisco newspaper for an Exposition Song. It was promptly recorded in October 1914 to herald the opening of the Expostion. How fortunate that the inimitable Henry Burr was chosen, with Albert Campbell, to record this obscure song of special interest to Californians!
I have used postcards and other images of the Fair to illustrate the song. I have included four examples of "autochromes," pictures taken with color film, that were published at the time in a history of the Fair.
My family went to the Fair often, and, in anticipation, had visited the site as the buildings were being constructed. After it opened, my great-grandmother was there almost once a week (judging from what she wrote in letters): to meet friends or attend a special event. In May 1915, she and her friends from the San Francisco Tea Club were thrilled to act as hostesses at a grand reception at the California Building at the Fair.
Her daughter-in-law, my grandmother, told us how she was captivated by the beauty of the Exposition, and especially by the Palace of Fine Arts designed by Bernard Maybeck. Fairgoers had their first breath-taking glimpse of this romantic structure from across its reflecting lagoon. My grandmother would take us as children to see it (the one building that was saved from the Fair).
I have also included a few family snapshots taken at the Fair, as well as my great-grandparents' season passes with their photographs attached.
Other images from the 1915 Fair can be see in these videos: "In Old Madrid" and "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise," both at this channel.
Thanks to Betty for this special record from her collection!
    "1915 San Francisco!
    Certainly we'll make things hum!
Pack your grip, boys, for the trip, boys,
    Surely, everyone will come!
    Sail right through the old canal, boys;
Or the train will take you there!
    Loudly cheer for 1915,
    San Francisco, and the Fair!
    1915 San Francisco!
Time and place we'll all remember!
    Months of pleasure,
    Without measure,
    February to December!
Send my mail to San Francisco!
All the world will sure be there!
Meet me out in San Francisco,
    At the 1915 Fair!
    San Francisco's waiting for you!
    Pretty maids and sights galore
    Boys, come early!
    Bring your girlie!
    To the grand Pacific shore!
See our Golden Gate wide open!
Health and wealth are yours to share!
    Don't forget old 1915,
    San Francisco, and the Fair!"

Thank you for sharing this with me, Carissima Genia. It's as if one were transported back to 1914, and found oneself sitting on a tufted horsehair settee, viewing the slides on the family Steriopticon, while listening to that EXHAUSTING song on the Victrola.

At the same time, my great-grandfather was killed by Germans on battlefield in Lorraine.
It must be a great exposition! Interesting recording too, to record a duo in these years was very hard, no micro, only a "cornet" in front of which they sang.

All this while WWl was being fought in Europe. I only wish we could still be so insulated from the world's quarrels. By 1917 we were in and on the path to the present.
