- I LOVE YOU, CALIFORNIA
(Abraham Franklin Frankenstein)
Played by Prince's Orchestra
Columbia, A-1623 (39597), 1914.
Please watch in high-definition (720p) for best picture quality.
"I Love You, California" was published in 1913, and at the height of its popularity was adopted as the official song for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915, as well as for the California-Panama Exposition held simultaneously in San Diego. By legislation, it was named the official song of the State of California in 1987.
To illustrate this recording, I have chosen scenic images (mostly postcards) that show California around the time the song was written. Several pictures of the 1915 Fair in San Francisco (some from published color photographs) close the video.
Through the years, I have often encountered the work of a San Francisco artist, W. H. Bull, whose illustrations graced the pages of books and magazines of the early 1900s. His painting of a California live oak is the best I have seen. In assembling the pictures for the video, I discovered that some of the most memorable images of California are W. H. Bull's work.
Here, the vertical illustrations of California landscapes (each with an automobile) are his, as are the painted illustrations of the 1915 Fair: the California Building and its flower garden, the scenes with crowds of people, and the night views of the Palace of Fine Arts and the Tower of Jewels. The picture showing the rainbow illumination in the night sky is also his. And, lastly, the sunset through the Golden Gate at the very end was painted as the title page for a college yearbook.
The drawing of the young couple at the 1915 Fair is by Louis Rogers: a magazine illustration for a World's Fair love story.
If you want to hear the words to this song, a great, early version can be found on the channel of Ken Gentry.
Once again, thanks to Betty for this record from her collection. "I Love You, California" is the other side of "1915 San Francisco." Видеоклипы
you could spend a lifetime exploring this state and never finish...
8040 your kidding? Well apparently I’ve only explored 2 great places of it! (Hollywood and Los Angles)

California is so damn diverse! In the south you have scorching deserts like Death Valley, and in the north you have miles of forrest that shiver with rain. And then central California is the sweet spot between northern and Southern California
Don't forget the nice beach's of San Francisco Hollywood and much more (i live in California so I know these things)
Julian Oropeza-Alcaraz you forget the rugged and sandy cold and hot coasts. The Miles of farmland in The Valley, the beautiful sierras riddles with lakes and snow, and the high desert Wild West ghost towns, the Mid East is good country. Rolling foothills! The delta with plenty of fun stuff to do.
@Ramen Lover I guess
So glad I call this state home!
Love this! My entire childhood and early adulthood was in CA, and I never knew of this song :(
Most Californians sadly don't the one thing i dont like is that videos of the song with her lyrics are often changed to sound like Rock N Roll, I personally really don't like Rock music.
Zenerax I’m glad I found out we had a state song, it should played atleast a little more often
As a foreigner, its pretty shocking to know many Americans don't know their state anthem as students in my country sing our state anthem every morning and everyone knows it.
Why did this bring tears to my eyes? I felt like it was a lost land... but my home has never been a picture postcard, has it? So many people now... I suppose we all long for an idealized place and time. .. I love you, California.
what a beautiful sentiment
I love what it was when my great great great (great?) grandma came here in 1867, approximately, after leaving New York after the Civil War because she was an Irish maid and her wages were undercut by ex-slaves from the South, so she went to San Francisco to try her luck. The new state, the Golden State!
If the NCR becomes a real thing this would be the national anthem.
a prideful and cheery anthem contrasting the hellish wasteland in Nevada
Well, it’s already the state song of California
Marvellous recording - great sound.

I'm glad you liked it!
I'm Californian, this is the national anthem I'm going use for my country. The music it self can be a piece of what my country will be once part of. Love California 💖.
I keep coming back to this video -- this beautiful recording makes me feel proud to be a Californian!
and i know when i die i shall breath my last sigh in my sunny California
Love the montage of pictures which accompany the music.
Very amazing and interesting with great period illustrations and period music. ... Thank you very much for this. It's all perfect.

I'm a native of Louisiana but we moved to California I was 5 years old and I never heard this song until now. I work at a elementary school and I work with the textbooks and just happen to be looking through a 4th grade social science textbook and saw this song and decided to google it. I love it.

Nice travel in California and in the Time. The sound is good for a 99yo record!
What song do you use as the introduction to your videos? It sounds lovely; I’d love to hear the whole thing, if only I knew the name!
It is called Serensde to a Wealthy Widow.
@@abendstunde49 thank you very much! It’s a wonderful song

Who in the world was or is Abraham Franklin Frankenstein!! Right out of the mind of Mel Brooks!! Wonderful!!
California's natural biomes and ecosystems are one of the most beautiful on earth, all politics aside, california is one of the World's best places it has to offer.
If the original version from 1914 is an instrumental version, then where did Jeep get the vocal version for its TV ad? That version sounds like it was about equally old with the scratchy needle on the record sound. Like it was played on a 78rpm. Maybe a version from either the 1910's or 1920's? But I can't seem to find that version here on RUclips.
***** This is NOT the first recording of the song, but it is an early INSTRUMENTAL version. Here is a link to a wonderful early version with lyrics: ruclips.net/video/giLxEvWfB-E/видео.html
Okay thank you. I wasn't sure which came first. I just noticed there are a lot of versions out on youtube, and none of them are the Jeep commercial version.

@Ramen Lover aye plenty to explore and one should explore as much as possible. But rather the lack of grandeur comes from the woes of homelessness, Silicon Valley, and the politicians who reside there.

Juan Favela You bet I'll be out in the streets armed and leading the rebellion to rejoin the United States of America. You guys realize that America would simply steamroll California too. With all the gun regulations there would be no armed and effective militia. The national guard here and the army here would be challenges enough. But hey, maybe the ensuing fight would leave enough liberals dead that it may change the course of California's political future. Assuming that the liberals do fight that is and don't cower.
No thanks, you can take and keep your communist slums. #NewCalifornia
