    Totally agree …. No shoes make the impact force disappear. Posture, cadence, form (as you said ) is key.

      Yeah but the super cushion shoes do help tremendously to lessen impact and prevent injury

      It’s not about making impact force “disappear”. Nobody claims this. But it *is* about force *dissipation* - In physics terms your aiming to lessen the moment of impact or the impulse force on the tissues by first dissipating a percentage of the force through the shoe material. This is called dampening. Max cushion shoes DO dampen forces and spread the forces out over time which DOES dampen the load on the body. If you don’t believe me just go run on pavement with no shoes totally barefoot and report back your findings.

      @@thepatternforms859 Like I said in the video, cushioning definitely helps when it comes to muscle impact and muscle fatigue. But running impact has to go through your joints, it can't take impact away from your knees and hips! What you are saying about running barefoot on pavement prove my point. If you ran barefoot you would feel all the impact and try and run lighter on your feet because of that. With a deeply cushioned shoe on you don't feel it because of the loss of proprioception and connection, but the impact is still there 👍
      There's been lots and lots of studies done by people a lot more clever than me proving this theory 😊

    Great vid!!
    Interesting to hear about how cushioning is not as important due to being in a more natural environment (trails) that are more forgiving. When using my Salomon shoes i felt the underground alot better, alot less than the Speedgoat due to the cushioning.
    With trailrunning (as compared to road) the big challenge is to train in similar terrain in which the race will be.

    Another great video, Loyd to bust those myths we all ask ourselves at some point. I recall a friend got some Hokas & got injured and a physio told her the Hokas were the cause as their cushion and “slow roll” was not for her. once out……injury cleared up. “Miles in the bank” is another one my friend says when it comes to training i.e. don’t panic about volume of training on one day, think of all the miles you’ve already done in your running life. have a great week, Loyd!

    #4. Watched a vid with experienced ultra runners giving advice and one that stuck with me was the older lady, has run hundreds of Ultras, saying something along the lines of “don’t run junk miles, adding miles, just to add miles is garbage, cut out the junk and focus on quality”. I throw in a fun free flow run, but during training I try and have a focus to every session. As always, thanks Lloyd!!

    Nice little video there, Loyd. Completely agree about 3 runs per week being enough and varying terrain. I’m no expert, but from what I’ve picked up over the years, it is much more realistic and less likely to get injured or risk overtraining. Rest days are so important and that’s when the adaptations happen. One thing I’m interested in is form. How important is it?

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 года назад +1

      Rest days sure are important 👍
      I think it's important to think about our form while we are running, how's my posture, how's my foot strike, things like that. Obviously as runners we all run differently and I don't think there's a wrong or right way to run but there's definitely more efficient ways to run 👍

    Outstanding video and some great advice. After my London marathon disaster in 2013 after I overtrained and had nothing left on the day made the decision to completely change my training for future marathons. Long a short did half the training and focused on quality and no momentum busting taper the result 4 successful under 4hr marathons in the bag later. Oh and on long runs I often do half trail half road with a quick pit stop in the middle to change shoes !

    Completely agree, running is very personal, footshape, weight, terrain...there is never 1 shoe for everybody...for me as a lighter runner I prefer the middle ground regarding cushion, not too much as this gets me loosing my posture, not too less as my old knees get too much pounding...in general I think the shoe you don't "feel" after 20k is the right one...great video, good music, interesting topic...I think it's important you cover also the basics as this will help others to read reviews between the lines also, sometimes I feel some people wait for reviews to tell them which shoes to buy and as I wrote above, reviews are helpful, but even if yours are very balanced, it's still personal :)

    Only way for the force from ground to be attenuated from travelling up to knees and hips is for work to be done by foot and ankle muscles which is maximised by minimalist shoes. I learnt this after developing knee and back pain.

    just throwing my anecdotal experience out there. i used to run in normal shoes in the early '00s & always hated running. in my early 20s, i got a pair of vibram fivefingers & it completely changed my view towards running - it became FUN. i mostly wore barefoot shoes for almost a decade & ended up working at a specialty outdoor shop & got to work with some of the best boots & trail runners in the business. but i didn't like most of them because of the heel to toe & heaviness. i started running in a pair of salomon fellraisers since that's all i had & used those for a while until finally trying hokas when i was like 32 (im 35 now), & running was still just as FUN as barefoot shoes but my street times were so much better. im well aware of my body & how shoes make me feel & i had zero issue with them. ive been running exclusively in hokas for road & older technology salomon's for the last couple years. my proprioception is fine in max cushioned shoes, but i still like the minimal heel to toe. knees are doing great (i had an ACL replacement in my 20s that had always given me issues. i still walk barefoot a lot or wear minimal shoes, but i wear Blundstones for daily wear now most of the time. im going to get a pair of Altra's next for my trail running to see if i like them any differently than hoka.
    i always said my job working in footwear - i talked people OUT of gear way more often than into it. there's so much misconception between marketing & youtube reviewers or backpacker's gear or the year or something. it's a lot to learn, but the more tools you have in the quiver, the better.

      I worked in the running shoe industry for 10 years at a specialist running store and you are right, there's so many misconceptions when it comes to shoes. The one thing I definitely learnt after carrying out 1000's is Gait assessments is everyone runs differently. Every shoe will perform differently for every runner and its not as simple as the big brands try to make it sound. I was the same when it comes to talking people out of buying product! I use to get some funny looks when I'd tell a customer that thy don't need a new pair of running shoes and maybe a bit of strength and conditioning would be a better option 👍

    I enjoyed 'Born to Run' but I do think it's important to mention the book is filled with pseudo-science as well as some really solid and strong points. It's great as a motivational book but the science behind it is paper-thin.
    The one thing I missed is that running needs to be hard. Running needs to be fun more than anything. It does tie into training frequency and volume. Don't push beyond what you enjoy or feel comfortable with because some schedule online tells you need to run X says for Y distance at Z pace. While there is certainly method to that madness it's also really important to listen to yourself.

    • @jacklurcher5813
      @jacklurcher5813 2 года назад +1

      Agree completely about 'Born to Run', it's an enjoyable read but over simplifies the 'your body is designed for running barefoot' idea. This is built on the premise that thousands of years ago people ran down prey barefoot, ergo start wearing minimalist shoes and your injuries will improve. Early man didn't wear glasses either, so will my eyesight improve if I stop wearing mine? Early human adults were indeed fantastic, efficient runners (possibly with 20/20 vision). That's because the one's who weren't had been eaten by furry bitey things. That's how natural selection works.
      Fast forward to today and we have all sorts of joint issues, and wearing shoes with lifted heels since pretty much birth has massively weakened our feet (this is where I agree with 'Born to Run') and altered our gait. However for most people it takes a lot of work to strengthen your feet and learn to run correctly 'barefoot', (or rather in minimal shoes). Possibly a year of very slow jogging and correcting form before you can even think of upping the speed, (Or maybe you're lucky and can just go out and do it - people vary considerably). It's doable, and I do seem to be picking up less injuries as I progress. However it's not as simple as 'Born to Run' suggests. 'Older yet Faster' is a good read regarding running form and injury prevention.

    I also noticed aggressive drops on shoes tend to screw with my knees 4 to 8mm of toe drop feels ways better. There is a point were there is to much cushioning some new balance and hokas feel weird partialy for this reason. I need some ground feel but not to much as going to low the ground will not protect your feet. I do not think everyone should go barefoot either especially if you live in a urban area the concrete will wreck your feet. I have tried altras. I noticed that those shoes are better on grass but since I rarely run on grass they are not as useful for me personally. My favorite shoes tend to be daily trainers like the saucony ride 16 or a nike pegasus. I like being able to feel the ground a little bit when I run plus I like shoes when they are light weight.😊

    100% agree but I think you will light a fire with this one ;-). I thinknof it like this: Punching a wall with a boxing glove is more forgiving than bare-knuckle so you can and do generate harder impact forces that are transferred up the kinetic chain. Its the same with cushioned shoes.

    I've got a pair of Saucony triumph 20s. They have been a good shoe untill recently. I've started avoiding pavements because they feel so uneven underfoot. Any advice would be appreciated Lloyd.

      Hi Neil
      The Saucony Triumph 20 is a pretty soft neutral road shoe, do you think you need more support? Have you ever had your running Gait look at before? Sometimes if you're running in a neutral shoe and you need a bit more structure, the medial side (inside) of the midsole can collapse as you run miles in the shoes. It will make the them feel uneven and not that comfortable. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊

      Took your advice Lloyd (sort of). Filmed myself running down the hallway then played the video back frame by frame . My foot strike is flat to outside and then rolls alarmingly to the inside. You were spot on.

    Hi Loyd...Max Cushion.. max stack height shoes are actually the fashion lol...a too soft shoe for me is firstawall not really good for my anckles after a couple of kms about over pronating ....i do préfer a bit of firmness...that s maybe why i prefer my adios pro2 over my VF2 or that i really enjoy my new Boston10 that a lot of reviewers disliked about the firm lightstrike midsole..in fact they are a bit firm but have the right amont of cushioning for me which gives me à good stability ride with a nice propulsion...great video 👏👏👏👍😀🇫🇷

    None of the brands make pronation control shoes anymore because it doesn't work. A rubber medial post is not going to stop an 79Kg runners foot pronation when they hand with a force 5x their bodyweight. All the brands have been moving away from that for years.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 года назад

      You're right a lot of the brands are moving away from a medial post system. I not sure its because it doesn't work, I think it's more to do with the whole running shoe industry getting softer? Over the years I've carried out around 6000 Gait assessments and I've seen the medial post system actually work well for a lot of runners that needed it. It doesn't work for everyone and I'm not necessarily a fan of it but it can make a difference for some 👍
      We all need to pronate to get through our Gait cycle but some runners really do heavily over pronate. When you sit them on top of just soft cushioning, crazy things can happen to their motion! 😲

    6:26, but as I think I read in "Born to Run" (but maybe someplace else), sun-baked dirt can get almost as hard as tarmac, and our bodies can handle it to some extent. For me, I'm more concerned about toxins from the road leaching into my body. There's a lot of nasty stuff out there.

    Do deeply cushioned shoes stop,calf aches after running?

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 года назад

      Cushioned shoes can take a bit of impact off your muscle groups so they could help with aches after running. Obviously there could be another underlying issues there that are causing the problems. It could be running form related, it could strength related, it could be many things causing the problem and a cushioned shoe probably isn't going to magic it away 🤔
      Hope this helps Nathan, thanks for watching 🙏
