Just used the techniques shared in this video on a once declared "irreparable" controller. D-PAD is sitting nice and pretty with this tutorial, and I managed to link over to his "bumper fix" video to solve that issue as well! The directions and tips were so clear, I can't salute you enough. Thank you for this, the disassembly video, AND the bumpers fix video. All were nothing shy of exceptional and extremely helpful! NOTE: To Fighting Game players, this video is for you.
This fixed the exact problem I had with the D-pad..every other time I pressed right it wouldn't actually do anything unless I pressed pretty hard down and now it works perfectly. It is a bit louder when pressing them down but definitely worth the satisfaction of knowing its gonna work 100% of the time. Thank you!
I bought a used controller about a month ago and was impressed that the analog sticks were in really good shape, but when I got it home and tried to navigate the dash I found that the d-pad was responsive only in the up and right directions, and I had to press much harder to get left and especially down for it to register the press. I took it apart and the button membranes were completely fine so I cleaned everything and it still controlled like shit. I must have had the controller apart twice after that to just make sure everything was together right. After doing this cheap and easy mod the d-pad is amazing now, thank you so much for sharing this!
Thanks. Bought an Xbox 360 pad for my PC and am shocked at how terrible the d-pad is. Really have to push for anything to happen. Just did both these mods and it works great now. Cheers.
+Damn Deal Done Same here, glad im not the only one, i actually returned it assuming it was broken (was used to using a ps3 controller for PC) can't wait to apply these mods
Hey, also just bought an xbox pad for the pc and the dpad response was not so great. After doing everything you've shown in the video i can say that it's working absolutely great and how it should work. Thanks a lot for the great vid man
Great advice. I just bought a new Xbox360 controller and found that if I wanted the left direction on the D-pad to register I had to press it much harder than the other directions on the D-pad. I was on the verge of exchanging it at the shop when I found this video which saved the day. For my fix I used 30 thou (0.03") thick plasticard (can be bought at most hobby stores). The plasticard will be much more robust in the long run compared to thin card. I cut out a circle 30mm in diameter with a small 6mm circle in the middle. This completely fixed the problematic D-pad and which is now equally responsive in every direction. BTW, I initially tried 20 thou (0.02") thick pasticard which helped a lot but not as much as the 30 thou.
worked like a charm. only problem was that my d-pad was sticcing on the left side, so i had to use the regular paper to cover both the top left and the bottom areas of the d-pad because just putting it on the left part of the d-pad and not having any on the bottom caused the bottom area on the d-pad to start sticcing, so i really just had to use a longer strip of paper to cover both areas. anyone whos trying to do this for the left side of the d-pad, please keep that in mind , and youll be ok :) veryy helpful video btw.
I just bought a brand new 360 pad for my computer and was very unsatisfied with the d-pad that that didn't give any real haptic response, no 'clicking' when pressed in any direction and that felt really shitty. Then I tried your tutorial and I'm happy as I could be. The shim did it perfectly for me. I didn't ever had a controller that felt so precisely. So, thank you very much!
Playing Super Meat Boy, my directional pad started moving towards the right and slightly up. The right button became "hollow" and unresponsive as a result. I actually just moved the whole pad to the left with some force and was able to get the right button feeling nice and responsive again. It is interesting how the whole pad can moves around like that. It doesn't move easily but you'd think it shouldn't move a fraction of a cm. That way it can stay centered no matter how hard you pound on it. Update: I decided to do the mod anyway, as the dpad just kept moving back to the left and slightly up. So I did the paper slip mod on the top left corner of the dpad (from inside perspective) but with only one layer of paper, and I skipped the cardboard part. I like the way the dpad feels, which is why I skipped it. The mod I did perform perfectly solved the problem. Looking at the design of how the dpad is kept in place, it looks like the engineers could have done better. A few weeks worth of hardcore Super Meat Boy playing shouldn't permanently change the natural orientation of the dpad. Makes me wonder how bad it is for years old controllers. In a week I may need to add a second layer of paper as the first layer gets worked in and crushed. I didn't initially use two layers as the dpad was severely biased towards one direction when I tested it with two.
Hey man. You are a blessing I thank God I found you I am a 62-year-old man with a mind and heart of a 20-year-old man I love to play my Xbox I have pastored for 24 years coached Little League baseball for 22 year. I was paralyzed in a car wreck in 1979 I died twice that night and woke up paralyzed from my neck down the doctor said if I lived I would be that way the rest of my life, after a couple years in the hospital and rehab centers I can walk the length of the gym floor on braces until another car wreck damage me more so I am confined to a wheelchair my hands are a little weak but I love my Xbox 360 and my Àce Combat, Don't freak out on me but I love to shoot l taught my neice to shoot when she was only nine years old just a little background on me for more go to RUclips and watch Pam's cutting board my wife and I have a cooking show I preach occasionally but I also have a video about the night I got paralyzed it is titled when a beautiful day turned tragic watch that but I'm glad I found you so I can get the information I need you for my Xbox and I can shoot the bad guys on TV and save my ammo lol 😅😂.
thanks bro, i will try. i still use a x360 to play SF 6 on PC, the x360 controller is a tough guy, still playing for all those years. But sometimes, i miss some moves or i press back and the character jump xD, i will try your tip.
I found that the "Reese's peanut butter cup miniatures" are almost the perfect size for the disc shape you cut out for the D pad. You just trace around one with a pen on the cardboard and cut it out and the circle comes out nearly perfect! I also took the D pad off and rotated the front of it because it seemed lopsided. I hope this helps you and anyone else out a little because you helped me out allot!
I had some difficulty with this in the beginning, but I found the right piece of cardboard and it works like a charm. Amazing. Solid and easy fix. Thumbs up!
Awesome video. I've been having issues with my controller since day one. Force on the left part of the D-pad would also cause the button portion to make contact which meant a number of games were either nearly unplayable or simply unjoyable.
In terms of the buttons, wired and wireless are the exact same thing so it should work fine. The only difference between the two is that one has a wireless antenna inside, a slot for a battery pack and charging port where the cord would otherwise be.
just done this to one of my controllers and i have to say things look really promising. it was hard and unresponsive as hell on the left side, now it seems to be all even, clickly and possibly responsive. gotta play some doa5 to be sure but looks awesome so far. alright, done it on two controllers, and now they're both have the best xbox360 dpad i've ever used, from worst and second worst. this works wonders.
This works pretty well! My D-Pad might be a little stiff, but at least it's not an unresponsive, floaty piece of shit anymore - it actually works pretty well for SNES emulation.
thank you. Santiago I have been playing Deadspace in my controller d-pad was doing exactly what I was doing for you and I looked your video up because I had built my own custom Xbox 360 controller and it works fantastic given I have just done it and I haven't really played with it for more than about three minutes but it seems like it is going to work I would have never thought about that dude drops you just got yourself another subscriber and I will give you a shout out on my my RUclips channel when my custom controllers or my custom chaos comes order comes in again thank you dude that was really really helpful
@RetroHunter06 I dunno if anyone did try it with SF4, but even if it was a good 360 dpad, it'd still be too hard to pull of SF4 combos with that button layout.
Should this help if some directions on my d-pad aren't as responsive as others? Sometimes it's "up", sometimes "right". They work, but from time to time require more push strength to react. Then the other time they work fine. But the only one that work good all the time and don't require any additional strength are "left" and "down". I don't use the d-pad much, but this is annoying, not sure what to do with about it, though.
I brought an xbox360 controller recently. All the directional buttons are very responsive. All the diagonals except the top-left (which doesn't even register unless pushed with greater force) and the bottom-left seem very non-responsive. Does your method fix the problem?
really nice! but instead i used small pieces of duct tape on the little lines under the dpad where you put the circle piece. It made my d pad feel so much better to use.
Thank you for this. My dpad DOWN was really insensitive for me. I had I wired controller and it was "normal" crosshead screws which was lucky cause I didnt have the other one :P Aldoh, I tried different amounts of paper and it fixed my down on the dpad, but instead the up got insensitive. So after trying different amounts I ended up with one layer of paper (unfolded) on the bottom AND on the top right and left (cause not possible to set it on top cause of plastic in the way) and now it's almost perfect! A lot better for sure and really worth doing this! Thanks a lot!
Hey there, I know it's a bit late, but do you think this will work with the PS4 controller? Hitting left and right makes it accidentally go up or down. It kills me in MK11
Just did this to a controller I just bought. The difference is night and day. It works great! I was just wondering though, there isn't any chance of the paper heating up and catching fire is there? 0_0
My brand new Xbox 360 Wired Controller only has one tiny flaw: whenever I'm testing my controller, and whenever I press the left d-pad button (>), it would sometimes redirect itself to the southeast position of the d-pad*, up to a point where the left d-pad button (>) would sometimes redirect itself to the down d-pad button (v). Do you think this method will work for me? I really need an answer before I start doing this process. *Whenever I say southeast position I mean the position between the left d-pad button (>) and the down d-pad button (v). I don't know which are the correct terms.
thanks that was amazing you solved my problem, God bless you. there is one more problem my back button dont respond unless i press very hard, can you tell me how to resolve this problem
i bought this crappy shell from amizon andthe buttons were iresponsive, when i saw this i was amazed, after finding this out i finally finished doing it to all my buttons as well, ty.
This mod is fantastic. My Dpad works great, but the thin piece of paper didn't work for me. Also you have to play around with the diameter of the cardboard just right. Make sure its not too big
Hey, my controller's dpad down btn does not work. Period. Will this help, or will i have to replace the board I ask as it's a limited edition Reach controller that I really like
I had the problem that the right dpad key would only register when pushing it down really hard. The circle cardboard thing really did wonders! I took a cardboard-ish gift card which is about 0.2 mm thin and it worked wonderfully! With a bit of silicone spray the squeaking also was almost completely gone. The diameter of the round cardboard piece should be around 32mm to perfectly fit the hole. I took some dividers and drew it on the piece of cardboard to get a nice circle. I recommend making a small hole in the middle, and then just pushing the + shaped spike of the dpad into the cardboard, to kinda make it "locked in".
You can use a 2mm Flat head and it will fit between the torx part(hard to explain better then that without a diagram but if you look at a torx screw you will see what i mean)..Worst case scenario with the flat head is you will break the little peg inside the screw (plus side a regular torx bit will now work). Just be careful about applying to much power as you may bend your bit. I've done it this way many times
Man i have a problem its on left d-pad when i try to hold it it doesnt work. I mean the pad is not responding until releasing it i need to hold it for games like gta v
awesome quick and easy fix. tremendous improvement to the D-pad so that its actually usable in fighting games. previously had to make precision left or right movement or else i would and up jumping back or forward. thanks for the guide.

Thanks man!

Protectereli It does work. I just did an half arsed job though by tearing bits of paper by hand. Will do it better when I have some more time.
This video deserves a HD remake!
Jesus christ, that I never found this earlier (still fixing controllers btw).
Hey, also just bought an xbox pad for the pc and the dpad response was not so great. After doing everything you've shown in the video i can say that it's working absolutely great and how it should work.

This is best best getto fix i have seen in years , to get the d-pad working ... then having to buy a xbone pad

I hate the Xbox controller but it actually clicks more than the GameCube's hahaha
I wish I knew about this years ago.
It really makes a massive difference. 360 d-pad has gone from the worst d-pad to maybe my favorite.

Bro after 10 years you showed me a way to improve a looooot this controller! very nice hack bro, Thanks from the future!

Thanks so much for the video and techniques! They helped me to repair my old 360 controller. It's now better than new!
You're a life saver! That little paper circle made my d-pad 100% responsive
I had some difficulty with this in the beginning, but I found the right piece of cardboard and it works like a charm. Amazing. Solid and easy fix. Thumbs up!
Had the exact same problem with the lower button hitting the plastic rim and not registering input. Now it works perfectly, thanks.
Awesome video. I've been having issues with my controller since day one. Force on the left part of the D-pad would also cause the button portion to make contact which meant a number of games were either nearly unplayable or simply unjoyable.
Don't come to the future, it's bad here.
Thanks for the video man.
my new controller had a shitty D-pad , i applied this fix and now it works flawlessly.
Just did this and the responsiveness of the d-pad is now excellent! Great tutorial and fix, thanks! Now back to Dark Souls II :D
Thank you so much for this I'm USELESS at this stuff but I managed to do it and now it's like brand new. Have a sub 👍
wow that little circle ring made my controller sooo much better! thankss!
Was having to press the heck out of the right d-pad, but this fix did the trick. Thanks!
Amazing. This guy deserves a reward
Not gonna lie, didn't expect this to work but it did, saved me from buying a new controller
Mad respect my guy
My dpad had never been better
In terms of the buttons, wired and wireless are the exact same thing so it should work fine. The only difference between the two is that one has a wireless antenna inside, a slot for a battery pack and charging port where the cord would otherwise be.
Great video, man! Just did this and my controller works perfectly now. Thanks!
Go to 3:00 to skip to the tutorial.
Lifesaver
Thanks
just done this to one of my controllers and i have to say things look really promising.

alright, done it on two controllers, and now they're both have the best xbox360 dpad i've ever used, from worst and second worst. this works wonders.
I've just done this mod - it's really effective. Getting much better scores in Spelunky! :)
Thank you very much..You saved me from going and buying a new one..It seem working fine..I had to put 4 papers to hold the gap....
This works pretty well! My D-Pad might be a little stiff, but at least it's not an unresponsive, floaty piece of shit anymore - it actually works pretty well for SNES emulation.

Remove the usual dpad, and add one from a Sega Saturn. :P
I put a piece of paper all the way around and it helped all the way around and it works so much better
For Brits, drawing round a 2 pound coin gives you just the right size
Muito obrigado, em pleno 2020 testei e deu certo, fico SUPER sensivel com toques leves e deu certo, obrigado meu caro =)
Boa
Damn thanks, managed to fix my dpad, finally i can play tetris

really nice! but instead i used small pieces of duct tape on the little lines under the dpad where you put the circle piece. It made my d pad feel so much better to use.
Did anyone try this out who plays Street fighter 4 on the xbox 360? Just wondering if helped.
It actually works!! Thanks mate.
Thank you for this. My dpad DOWN was really insensitive for me. I had I wired controller and it was "normal" crosshead screws which was lucky cause I didnt have the other one :P

Me salvou...
Thanx man
So, my d-pad, down became mostly unresponsive. How do you fix that?
Just did this to a controller I just bought. The difference is night and day. It works great!
I was just wondering though, there isn't any chance of the paper heating up and catching fire is there? 0_0
FromPlsNerf No, if that would happen the rubber and plastic would melt. As long as it is not touching the board there is no chance that could happen.
*Whenever I say southeast position I mean the position between the left d-pad button (>) and the down d-pad button (v). I don't know which are the correct terms.
Anyone know if it negatively effects diagonals enough to make a big difference in platformers?
thanks that was amazing you solved my problem, God bless you. there is one more problem my back button dont respond unless i press very hard, can you tell me how to resolve this problem
Great video. It helped fix my controller
Simple and clear. That fixed my problem. Thanks. 👍🏻
i bought this crappy shell from amizon andthe buttons were iresponsive, when i saw this i was amazed, after finding this out i finally finished doing it to all my buttons as well, ty.
thank you, it helped :) i had to push really hard to get the left dpad to work, now it works better (not great, but better) :)
Thanks, it feels much better.
So awesome. I did it and I does really help. Thanks a lot man. As a fighting game play I always use the pad and it helped a lot.
Thanks buddy It really help me.
Thanks dude holy crap this worked miracles
do you recommend these controller for the fighting game?
were can u oder joysticks bumpers triggers d pad abxy buttons and the trim
I got the left side and bottom to be clickly but the top and right aren't. So close but it feels better anyway.
CAN PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON HOW TO FIX LEFT ANALOG AND RIGHT ANALOG STICK!!!! PLZ!!!
This mod is fantastic. My Dpad works great, but the thin piece of paper didn't work for me. Also you have to play around with the diameter of the cardboard just right. Make sure its not too big
Nice tip man....Good work
works for me perfect but i used paper all around not only on the bottom. Thanks
the cardboard thing helps a lot thanks
Hey, my controller's dpad down btn does not work. Period. Will this help, or will i have to replace the board
I ask as it's a limited edition Reach controller that I really like
I did this with my other xbox 360 controller 13 years ago. And another one. Easy fix. You ask agents for help they tell you to buy a new one.
my d pad dosnt stick but when im playing mw3 the right dosnt work so when i click to the right on thr d pad no responce but its not stick
Great find! This helps a ton.
did u do the sanding mod before doing this?
holy shit this is perfect. now i can finally press left on my controller!!
Wow thnx im tryin to get like a pro controller without paying a lot like adding a ps2 joystick and such so thnx
Could you do this with a wired version?
what if you don't have the screw driver thing to take out the screws
You can use a 2mm Flat head and it will fit between the torx part(hard to explain better then that without a diagram but if you look at a torx screw you will see what i mean)..Worst case scenario with the flat head is you will break the little peg inside the screw (plus side a regular torx bit will now work). Just be careful about applying to much power as you may bend your bit. I've done it this way many times
@DanieLDude1554 he probably did not properly discharge his self of static.
Thank you so much! Now it is also a great controller for emulators! Thanks!
Whenever I press right on on my D-pad controller it acts as if I am pressing the Y button. How can I fix this? Thanks for the help.
Man i have a problem its on left d-pad when i try to hold it it doesnt work. I mean the pad is not responding until releasing it i need to hold it for games like gta v
Thanks so much it works so good
Ty bro, worked fine.
my control stick came out of my control and i need help to got it back in it
awesome quick and easy fix. tremendous improvement to the D-pad so that its actually usable in fighting games.
previously had to make precision left or right movement or else i would and up jumping back or forward.
thanks for the guide.
I fixed my 3 xbox 360 directional pads by cleaning them with q tips and rubbing alcohol and q tips
Hmm ,i will give this a shot first instead of cutting away plastic for the transform d pad.
Works like a boss!
Helped me SO MUCH + i love your voice :p no home, subbed!
this is brilliant, thanks.
I just put in a black d pad in the xbox 360 controller and put controller back together and works fine
