    As a submariner I have always wondered how long does it take to do a combat reload on both CIWS systems.
    Seems like with the influx of drones like the Iranian drones being used in Ukraine. It seems the small boats Iran uses could each deploy with 2 dozen or more on board. So a combat reload would be desired.

      15-30 mins usually at least for the phalanx, depends on how well trained the gun crew are at reloading it, and I also believe older Model cwis's take closer to 30mins. One of my old HS friends is actually onboard one of the Ticonderoga class cruisers and that's his job, or at least one of them

      Sadly, all vertical launch missile reloads can't be done at all at sea. Destroyer has to rotate out with another destroyer just to return to base for reloading missile box modules. Only the CWIS RAMs and 5 inch gun can be reloaded at sea

U.S will show force when need to. sometime they downplay it to let the foe think its not as good as it seem to test how much they push it.
      they used sm-2 to shoot down a drone. think about it.. thats like throwing million dollar away to take down a paper airplane. thats a show of force. also its israel. U.S keep a close tie with israel for geographic strategies. giving if it were other countries, U.S would probably track it without shooting it down.
      donald trump show an image from satellite when they scout a target. the image was very clear. you can see wheels on a car or door of a cabinet. being president he show classified image that show the cutting edge technology to the world. thats nothing new they had that tech prob early 80's. the EU used ground base radar to track a satellite with very clear image of an object. you can actually see the satellite spinning in space. dont expect UFO technologies or robot as a secret tech. it really goes down to how well it works. as you can see russia system although very good - still not as good as you think it is.

      @@bigstuff52 Yes there is lol. Raytheon has been producing interceptors for these types of threats for years now. Plus laser systems have evolved to the point they can start being deployed on Burke class destroyers to easily intercept hypersonic missiles targeting a fleet. Also what a lot of people seem to fail to realize is that naval warfare is more complicated than they think. It's a lot more than just "lol just shoot a fast missile at them lol" and win like Chinese propagandist would have you believe. The United States has invested tens of millions into anti-satellite technology for this reason. You cannot kill a carrier if you don't know where it is, and you certainly can't maintain a course and lock without that kill chain. The United States is the global leader in satellite warfare by a landslide. As long as they maintain that astronomical advantage, hypersonic missiles are next to useless against carrier strike groups.

    My concern is inventory. The destroyers can only carry so many missiles at a time. They are also consumable and expensive. There are a lot of parties in the neighborhood that have stockpiles of weapons to overwhelm.

      Seriously.

    • @Rob_F8F
      @Rob_F8F 11 месяцев назад +17

      @jimfrazier8611 Phalanx is a modular "bolt-on" system that is self contained. As such, there are limitations to amount of ammunition that it can carry.
      That said, in engaging an incoming missile, Phalanx may only have a few seconds to shoot it. Therefore 15 seconds of ammunition means it has enough to engage several missiles before its magazine is depleted.

    • @Rob_F8F
      @Rob_F8F 11 месяцев назад +15

      @jimfrazier8611 I take your point. I don't pretend to have any special knowledge about the Phalanx or the Kinzhal. I'm just going through the publicly available information.
      The latest Phalanx model is Block 1B andq has a 4,500 rounds/minute rate and a magazine drum of 1,550 rounds. That equals 20.67 seconds of firing time. The maximum range is 5,500 meters.
      A hypersonic missile travels at a minimum of Mach 5. That equates to 1,715 meters/second.
      If a Phalanx begins fire at maximum range and continues all the way back to the ship, it has 3.2 seconds against a Mach 5 missile.
      At that rate, a Phalanx can engage 6.45 times before running dry.
      The question for which there is no public answer is: how many hypersonics does it take to swamp a carrier strike group's electronic warfare, multiple Aegis systems shooting 100s of SM-2s, 3s, 6s, and ESSMs to get 7-8 missiles into Phalanx range?

    • @richardconway6425
      @richardconway6425 11 месяцев назад +9

      @@Rob_F8F interesting think through. I wouldn't dispute your logic or math, but the the ciws was never designed to engage hypersonic targets. They are best used against slower moving targets, such as mortar, artillery and rockets (as in land warfare). And missiles too, but a supersonic missile would be the limit of its capabilities. Hypersonic projectiles are a relatively new paradigm of warfare, and are going to require a whole new paradigm of defensive strategies. Currently, many people consider it an impossible task to intercept and destroy a hypersonic missile once in flight.
      Thinking about the sinking of the Moskva missile destroyer in the black sea, I believe that it's defences were overwhelmed by a large number of small (and presumably slow moving) drones, before it was hit by two Ukrainian made Neptune anti ship missiles, which I would assume were travelling at supersonic speed. It seemed to be a very cost effective way of doing things, to sink a ship that the Russians considered invincible. It too had a multi layered system of defences, making it supposedly immune from any and all attacks.
      Incidentally, in your first comment you questioned the idea of the region of the Red Sea being full of 'bad neighbours', but I would say that's true. The region is full of well armed and funded (by Iran) militant groups, who have a surprisingly capable arsenal of weapons and technologies, such as surveillance/reconnaissance drones and guided missiles. That's all you need to have a go at a ship. There are militant groups in the sinai adjacent to the red Sea, in parts of Egypt that the government does not control. These groups also present a threat to Israel, a country that the US is currently trying to defend, so I think it's perfectly reasonable to state that us navy ships are going to be a target for these groups.

    Fire a barrage of of missiles, and eventually one will likely get through, with severe consequences.

They would be used to further confound the terminal guidance systems of anti-ship missiles beyond the Burkes' and Ticonderogas' current EW and other capabilities. In a peer fight the incoming warheads could be nuclear. It will be critical to have a way to confound those guidance systems, because, as you know, all the missile needs to do is get close.

    Let's say there's 6 US Destroyers with one in the middle of a 5 pointed star formation, they can set the one in the middle to be the command and control ship and that ship would consolidate all of the radar data from all 6 ships and launch weapons from all 6 ships to engage multiple threats at the same time using whatever asset is closest with the highest probability of intercept...

    Is it rational for the U.S. and various media to inform the entire planet about American offensive and defensive capabilities? Even IF other major adversaries have some idea of our military capabilities, isn’t it “aiding and abetting” or even treasonous to make military capabilities widely known to anyone who could use that information to plan and develop counter technologies? Or is military and civilian leadership of the U.S. just a cadre of juveniles wearing uniforms or civilians so stupid as to make things easier for adversaries for some other unfathomable rationale?

      It's a standard part of deterrence to publish the basic facts so that potential enemies know that it wouldn't go well for them to attack. Similarly to demonstrate that it works having done acceptance tests and sea trials. USN rocks!

      Don't worry. The Russians and Chinese know a lot more about these subjects than the American public. However, as we see in Ukraine, they haven't necessarily figured out how to make and use these things as well as the highly paid US MIC. I didn't hear anything that was a serious revelation. USAF vet, Avionic Sensor Systems, Electrical Engineer, PE.

      @@lonpfrb I can appreciate the thinking behind what you describe. However, I still think it's better to keep potential enemies in the dark about military capabilities. Keeping them guessing and in doubt about capabilities I believe is just as good of a deterrent and keeps potential enemies in the dark about our capabilities. It's better for defense purposes to keep others guessing. But these videos given them detailed information about what we're doing or even ideas we have that others may never have thought of. So I still think is a stupid mistake. Look at the Manhattan Project, did they advertise what the US was doing? All the US has to do is inform potential enemies the US has the capability to counter anything they may come up with without giving them any details. I think American leaders are naive and stupid.

    Id like to know how they know what is a threat and what is a UAP? Spy-1 radar tracks "fleets" of UAPs just hanging out a few dozen miles away so we dispatch f18SH's and we get those videos released, when they (jets) get there ,.the arleigh burke radar shows them maneuvering in ways that cant be explained, how do we differentiate these things from threats? We can dispatch a jet for every UAP as there are too many of them

      There’s actually a lot of factors that go into it. It’s not just the system itself making the decisions it self there are operators that sit at consoles that decipher what’s real and what’s not…. To get some what if a concept refer to the movie battleship.
