  • One of the great pioneers of jazz trumpet, Red Allen suffered from comparisons with 'Pops' but in truth was a superb stylist himself - one of the great New Orleans trumpet players. Band includes: Al Cay - tenor sax; Fred Hunt - piano; Lennie Hastings - drums; Jim Douglas - guitar. Bass? Trombone?

This is SO good. Red blows his socks off, and fair play to the Alex Welsh band, the best traditional jazz band ever to come out of the UK (well, Scotland mostly). Great stuff. Can listen to it all day. R.I.P. all you guys. See ya soon!

What talent they all had. Red was an original. And here he is shown with some of the greatest musicians England ever produced...."Herr Hastings" on drums - priceless!

Nice anecdotes about the great trumpet player Red Allen (and other US visiting tourists in the '60s) in Jim Douglas's excellent memoir about his years with the Welsh band...available on Amazon and well worth buying.

As Louis Armstrong said "you can't live without jazz". Red is one of the greats.

It doesn't get any better than this. Red is in great form- just listen to his phrasing on the last chorus and of course the great Lennie Hastings on drums driving that rhythm section. Nice solos by the rest of the guys. Good one Bob!!

So nice to see and hear my cousin Al Gay on tenor sax. This was never his real name and like me changed it many years ago.

Red was a "scat singer" (on some sides) , as was his contemporary - Louis A (Armstrong). BOTH men embodied some of the best of jazz, trumpet playing of their times, and BOTH had "scat singing" that very-closely resembled their, own TRUMPET playing! This point, about Red, was brought-up by the late Whitney Balliett, of The New Yorker. So, THANKS, for this example of Red, in his later days - still as FIERY and inventive, as ever!

Definitely Roy Williams on trombone. I did a few gigs with Roy and Jimmy Douglas many moons ago. Jimmy still lives near me in Bedfordsire, Roy used to live in Luton. I also gigged with Roy's son Andy who had such a promising career on guitar, wonder what happened to him? Going back 20 odd years, hehe perhaps even 30 years. don't time fly when ur havin fun !!

I'm afraid it was not Roy Williams it was a Trombone player called Roy Crimmins who played with the Welsh Band early on Williams came later and the Base Player was Ron Mathewson

@msailors exactly , I don't understand this tendency to compare and contest as if we are watching a football game. The good point is the joy of that moment now long gone yet recorded for us here where we can once again share in the pleasure together, strangers over time and distance. Stay on the good foot ,swinging ,man!

Fantastic performance. But there doesn't seem to have been a camera rehearsal. The director misses Al Gay and Jim Douglas's entrances by a mile. There's a camera nowhere near being on either of them.

mr HARDY, I dont agree with your critique or with many other white critics who throw an all enveloping shroud over an artist. Art is only an opinion. Many black artists have opinions about their fellow players and are very different from a critical point of view. Did Henry Allen suffer. NO. He was stylistically very different from ARMSTRONG and to a large extent went his own way. An individual and amazing style that was not slave to the ARMSTRONG legacy. I would think a comparison here does not fulfill many criteria. Armstrong a great man was awe inspiring and great. ALLEN as far as I am aware did not have what is called PERSONALITY and was not the want of film producers etc. Perhaps his entertainment skills were governed by fashion of the times. Inperspective I think Mr RED ALLEN in his playing was different in approach and manner to LOUIS but musically gifted. His own man and almost certainly very appreciated by his black contemporaries who were lucky enough to remember his live horn blowing. He did not suffer because of Louis, and comparison to him. This sort of analysis and silliness is a white thing....usually.

I'm inclined to agree with you Ian. I think Allen was his own player with his own style. I just don't accept this belief that he was somehow in Armstrong's shadow. Allen worked his nuts off with many bands and came from a jazz family. His style is different to Armstrong. He plays far less rubato

The bassist is quite likely Ron Mathewson. Too bad he didn't get a solo on this one. He's all over that instrument!
