- Henry Red Allen is probably in my top 3 favorite trumpet players of all time. This is clip is an example of his greatness. Accompanying him is his all star band: Coleman Hawkins on saxophone, Rex Stewart of cornet, Jo Jones on drums, Milt Hinton on bass, Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, Danny Barkerand on banjo, Vic Dickenson on trombone. This is taken from the Sound of Jazz, a CBS special which appeared in the 50s.

What an incredible Band and performance!
Fantastic,I love these old clips.Jo JONES has such a deep pocket and REX STEWART is unbelievable everybody is great!! Thanks for posting this.
Vic Dickenson on trombone, my God, that boy can play! Everybody's good in this, damn good!
Henry Red Allen is probably one of the most underated greats. I saw him many times at the Metropole in New York. He was great. This mainstream music, is the mainstream of what came latter.
Yes Lenard your right on man at the metro pole write back man I'll tell you something ok
Beyond words Thank You
Oh my God!!! Pee Wee soars..growls...Red..superb....Takes it to the heights!!! What a JAM SESSION...AND THEY ALL KNOW IT!!!! I have never seen my heroes before..it was magic. Thank you so much...How do you come down from a natural high like that! I am finding it difficult.....I want more. What we missed out on in Australia..
One of the best and brightest young trumpeters in New Orleans by the early 1920's.
Man Oh Man … What a swingin' group. Perfection !!!
Fascinating, how these guys visibly enjoyed their playing.
One of the best jazz group ever heard in a jamming session. All (and I repeat.. all) included, and what a wonderful tune.. I particularly love Vic this time.
isn't it just pure joy to even glimpse
the balletic elegance of papa Joe Jones on drums ? and
maybe only Billy Higgins since has such a magical smile -
Rex stewart is so amaziiing in this video !!
Red and Hawk, I love their 1933 recordings. On top of their legendary playing, Allen's vocals are really something special on those recordings.
It's a miracle it was made and we still have it to enjoy. I would get to the T V in the late 1950's for the Robert Herridge theatre and any related programs and this was so intense, moving, I had to take it up. Nothing is more spirited and genuine than this gang of stars.
An absolute masterpiece !!!!
What a BAND!!!!!!!;;;
They put classy stuff like this on the air at one time!
Amazing audio!
Everybody is absolutely brilliant here but my man is Coleman Hawkins, angry and plaintive at the same time....And Pee Wee?....What can one say?...Sublime!
THIS SONG IS PHENOMENAL , REX STEWART SOLO IS TOO RAW
Fantastic!
I love this so much! One amazing solo after another! And they are all so distinctive and individual.
Thank you to my "Wise" family for introducing me to this great genre
of old jazz.
Yes ... Pee Wee, and Red, at their best of their later days. They, both died in the late 1960s, but their contributions to jazz ... incl. their LATER days ... are captured on film, and on recordings.
Thanks so you much for posting The Greats. It reminds me of the time when I met Jo Jones and we sat at the table together with another friend at the Jazz Work Shop in Boston,Ma. We were checking out Rahsaan Roland Kirk another Great and that night Rahsaan introduce Mr Jo Jones as one of the GREAT! Jazz drummers and ask him to sit in which he did. That was a night I will never forget.
Thanks again,
NK
Wish I had been there!
Great trumpet player and vocalist. Thanks for posting.
this is great - wish there had been a lot more jazz programming like this on tv in the 50s - back in the days when we could only get 2 channels in our part of South Carolina...
Henry Red Allen is wonderful, gorgeous !!
goosebumples
Love it. I kinda hear the "Summertime" chord progression.
What magic it is, very wonderful stuff
Papa Jo Jones on the drums
Holy smokes, I am so pleased that this was filmed. Thanks for posting.
Hello
I can't believe there aren't more comments about that solo Pee Wee played here. MAN ALIVE that was great!
The Thelonious Monk of his instrument
@@postatility9703 more or less :)
I forgot that second trumpet player s name ...what a soulful solo...very creative
Rex Stewart!
Also saw him at the Metropole, they played early evening and it was fantastic!
Thank you. Great Jelly-Roll-Morton-Composition, originally entitled Ted-Lewis-Blues (1927). Greetings from OK-Dreamband. CD "Clarinet-Dreams" is available for download (iTunes, eMusic).
Ilove this. What a rythm section!! And a laughing Rex Steward after his first frase.
Also, Danny Barker is definitely playing a guitar there.
Great video , valla combo puro talento
Oh boy!! They sho are cookin 😎
unbelievalbly AWSOME -thank you -I too love Louis - but hey the Sax gets my applaude too ----THNKYOU N
mind blown.
Vic Dickenson kicks ass
I bought a 16mm print of the show -probably illegally - in 1979 and showed it to everyone I knew for years. The program dates from a Sunday afternoon in 1957. Lester Young appeared in the Billie Holiday segment, so ill he could barely stand for his solo. It's a magnificent musical treasure available on DVD.
The Sound Of Jazz is amazing from start to finish, in its entirety.
Fantastic band thanks for vid.
Estilo muy personal...intrigante...inesperado...hermoso...!!!
J'ai le 33T mais je ne connaissais pas la vidéo. C'est bien aussi!
Bean is unsurprisingly wonderful. Rex Stewart completely blew me away! In fact, what am I doing singling out certain players? This entire group and number are killer!! Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. That's Danny Barker on banjo. And Papa Jo Jones on drums.
The mans birthplace is in my neighborhood🎶
Bellissimo!!!
Love this video
wow!
The same group does "Rosetta" next, the best version I've ever heard, with Red telling the group, "Don't drag the tempo this time", as they had with "Wild Man Blues" (notice Vic Dickensen's intro to his solo and Jo Jones impatience with the tempo).
Such great players, and men!Terry Teachout's great biography of Ellington led me to search for clips of Rex Stewart, who is incredible in this. And check out Rex's biography. He was an extremely versatile and interesting cat...
Delighting! thanks for sharing the info!!! I loved this! I just recently listened in iTunes and blown my head out of this dimension! :D
Thanks ! Thanks!! PeeWee!!!
Amo este sonido

Thanx - i'm collecting performers to try, in a quest to discover my taste. (Not sure my previous comment reply got through...)
My man thanks for that cause that is my step granddad Joe I'm Lawson Henry Paul Allen son
+Lawson Crumpler God bless your step granddad and the other fine musicians who played along side him on this gem of a recording.
Words fail me---where can I find a semblance of this genre of music in the NW of England
The banjo player is Danny Barker, giant of New Orleans jazz. Put his name in the tags....
I've favourited this, a delight to find. :0)
Red Allen in your top three of all time - so who would the other two be?
P.W. просто гигант джаза, Аллен сотоварищи тоже 'коты' такого же уровня, но в кларнете PW для меня авторитет! Спасибо за историческую правду о великих...
Hello

@unmand Dizzie and Louis (although of late i've been getting into James Andrews and Trombone Shorty they're both very good JA has a much more traditional sound but sits well along contemporary artists too)
Hey I am doing a school project and I wanted to know if there are lyrics to this song.
Evelyn L - Well, you can Google "wild man blues lyrics" ... and I think you'll find a good source. CD Universe has an MP3 download, plus the lyrics.
Louis Armstrong
Sweets Edison
we are taking care of henry allens wife rn.
Nat Pierce on piano.
HRA never sounds dated.
The tag is wrong that's Papa Jo Jones not Johnson
and what about Dizzie and Miles? and Fats Navaro?

@@ducciocastelli7560 you can dude..
OOOOYEAHAHAHA
... danny barker swings on guitar .... (»more than on banjo«)
Hello
@djmane1 - No Bix Beiderbecke, Buck Clayton, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, et. al.? Edison was fine, but the others were probably better, overall. opinions only, of course.
For God's sake, Danny Barker is playing GUITAR, not banjo ! The unsighted pianist is Nat Pierce.
