Thanks for the video! I've always been able to remove the trim ring by grabbing it and turning it counterclockwise to unscrew it, per Schlage installation instruction manual, but maybe there are different types. Also, there is a special plastic castle nut wrench tool that comes with a new Schlage commercial handle set for removing and installing the castle nut bushing. You can purchase the tool separately. Part number 40-017. I think someone also makes a steel one, which is nice if you are working on a lot of door handles like in an office building. Always start the castle nut by hand to avoid cross threading it. It should go on and come off with little effort. You can use a small Allen key to insert in the hole to remove the handles.

Can't thank you enough for this. I had to really pound on the ring to get it to turn. Eventually I worked it off. Thanks again for putting this together to show how it's done.

Thank you for showing me this procedure. I picked up a nice solid-core door out of a Dumpster to use as the top of a very sturdy workbench I'm building. The door weighs 100 lbs. including the hardware, and after lugging it all the home I was dismayed by the apparent lack of screws for removing the lockset! I was seriously considering using a hack saw or a hammer.... Now, thanks to you, I have successfully taken it apart without causing any damage.

Just so everyone is aware - This also works for the ones that have a key-hole on one side, and a twist lock on the other.
Also, thanks for the video my dude. Absolutely no other video on RUclips shows this exact model with the tension/spring plate on the frame beneath the faceplate and I couldn't figure out how to get past it. Didn't realize that ring was screwed on. Appreciate it man!

Kitchen knives made of foundry sludge metal are likely to not work, a decent hand screwdriver, and thin steel nail will do. I sometimes use a pebble as hammer. A stiff piece of sheet metal piece with a thin enough edge can do.

How would you remove an unlocked lever handle (so, we are missing the key but the door is unlocked, attempting to remove to take to a locksmith). We have removed the interior handle, the part that you insert into the side of the door, and have gotten as far as removing the face plate on the exterior handle (the side with the lock), but can’t actually get the rest of the outer mechanism apart. Any help would be appreciated!

WD-40 or whatever liquid oily stuff or oil to make things easier to move.
Optionally, hammering: vibration may clear or loosen up gunk seizing parts together. Just don't deform anything critical, so 5 taps is about max.

Just FYI...that "small" screw gun is an impact driver. These are meant to drive anchors into resistant substrates. Such as concrete anchors and self tapping screws into structural and cold formed non-structural steel framing. They do so with a mechanical hammer continuously striking a geared drive as opposed to the constant, and measurable, force applied by typical cordless drills where the torque can be set and managed. I have seen HUNDREDS of hinge screws, panic device mounting screws, and countless other hardware mounting screws stripped, sheared, or otherwise ruined by these. Don't get me wrong, they are great tools for construction, but they should NEVER be used when installing any door hardware short of using self tapping screws to mount door closers and/or mechanical door stops onto steel frames, but never on doors of any sort, or wooden frames. Always use a normal cordless drill that allows you to control the torque applied to the fastener.
