  • Tunisia is considered a microcosm of the Mediterranean world. On his journey, Jaafar Abdul Karim has fascinating encounters with all sorts of people, including a male belly dancer and a researcher who interprets the Koran from a female perspective.
Together with the Tunisian belly dancer and choreographer Rochdi Belgasmi, Jaafar Abdul Karim explores the capital’s Medina quarter, discussing masculinity and the stereotypes that exist about it in the Arabic-speaking world.
He also meets Dr. Sellin, a scholar who argues that the role of women in the Koran must be re-examined. In terms of women’s rights, Tunisia is the region’s most liberal country, but reforms are still needed.
Jaafar also meets young Tunisian designers hoping to conquer the international fashion world, and start-up entrepreneurs who solve environmental and sustainability problems in innovative ways.
After visiting a traditional hammam, Jaafar heads to Djerba, the largest island in North Africa. While tourists flock to its coastal resorts, life in the interior is still quite traditional. For example in Erriadh, where he visits the "La Ghriba" synagogue. Just under 2,000 Jews live in Tunisia today, half of them on Djerba.

We went to Tunisia 20 years ago for our summer holidays when I was a teenager, we stayed in tourist hotel with a massive water slide which was really cool.
However the thing I remember about it mainly was going to Sousse one evening it was such a beautiful city, felt like I'd take a step back in time and got to experience an old style arabic city.Walking down the small streets with all the little shops was a really different experience than you would get on most Mediterranean sun holidays and I'd love to go back to Sousse again some time.

Tunisia and Morocco have a lot of old city wall, old city gates, old fort, tower, citadel, castle, palace, old Moorish mosque, old church, old university, old medieval traditional Arab and Berber houses, old Roman and Carthage ruins, old medieval city and town. beautiful old paving, street and road. old market. Its sad to look Syria and Iraq today it ruins, many castle, old city, old thousand years temple, mosque and church, traditional houses, city wall and palace destroyed.

Why is every video of this series about LBGT or homosexuality? I thought it would show landscapes, cuisine and popular culture of those countries but it never does.

People have always lived in peace and tranquility in Tunisia, or as the Romans, Vandals and Arabs knew it as Africa. It's spots like Tunisia and Andalus where prosperity and cultural richness flourished for centuries. Tunisia is easily in my opinion the most under-rated country in the whole world. because its size and voice does not represent its true value as a nation. Perhaps the next generations of Tunisians will fix it.

its an ancestral tradition that's been going for several centuries. People over there don't need nivea and all the diy stuff. In rafraf beach you can find holes where you pick the clay and ask your grand mother for some orange blossom water to mix it and you're all set. some people mix it with sea water at the beach and do it right there. Great memories!

Tunisia seems similar to Morocco. I love Morocco so much that I visited in 2015 and 2017. Some part, especially the island shown here reminds me of chefchauen with the distinct blues.
My second African countries visit was in September 2021 for 29 days all over Egypt and the Sinai peninsula, the Red Sea is beautiful. I love the Mediterranean countries so much that I don't have time to visit other countries. I visited Turkey 4 times but still have not seen My Nemrut, so I have to visit again! My favorite part was sailing on a Turkish wooden yard for 2 night and swim in the Mediterranean along the Turkish riverea!
I visited the Bahamas years ago, but it lack history so it didn't draw me back. I guess I am amazed by the former Roman empire.
