From Mount Etna to Palermo: Exploring Sicily, Italy - Mediterranean journey | DW Documentary

- As she travels the Mediterranean, journalist Sineb El Masrar visits Sicily, Italy’s largest island. She meets citrus farmers and puppeteers, and journeys from active volcano Mount Etna to the regional capital, Palermo, a hub for marine rescue efforts.
Sicily produces some 1.5 million tons of citrus fruit annually. Near Catania, Sineb helps organic farmer Manfredi Grinaudi with the winter harvest. She also meets Enrica Arena, whose company "Orange Fiber" makes clothing from citrus peel.
Sicily has a dramatic history, and nobody tells it better than the "Fratelli Napoli", a long-established family of puppeteers from Catania. In the "Piccolo Teatro", Sineb learns all about this famous performance tradition.
Sicilians have a special bond with "Mama Etna," as they affectionately call Europe’s highest active volcano. Sineb accompanies volcanologist Giuseppe Salerno up the peak to a chilly 3,000 meters above sea level. Then it's back to the milder temperatures of the Mediterranean: Palermo is Sicily’s capital, and has a population of almost 700,000. It was long considered a stronghold of the Sicilian mafia, until residents fought back. Sineb meets Chiara Utro from the anti-mafia movement "Addiopizzo", as well as Palermo Mayor Leoluca Orlando, who helps people rescuing refugees at sea. Finally, Sineb visits Modica, where she tastes the exquisite products of a local chocolate manufacturer. That’s enough to tempt her colleague Jaafar Abdul Karim to join her, and the two compare notes on their Mediterranean journeys.

Italy is so special! Full of art, history and natural beauty!
It is the dream of all those people who love travelling, to get there in Italy.A wonderful country which had been a well known place even in the ancient time .Thanks for the video.
Please Anto, let's me allow correct you, better say "there in Sicily".
You know Sicilian people doesn't love to names as italian.
Sicilians have a huge proudness and them heart belong at own Island
@@thewebhorse I get what you are saying. I’m American, but my Grandmother was from Sicily and my Grandfather was from Naples and they always explained it as they were from 2 separate worlds! Lol
NUATRI SEMU SICILIANI!@@thewebhorse
Love love love DW's DOCS!!!!!
I really enjoyed my time in Sicily. The food is so fresh and bursting with flavor probably because of the volcanic soil. You forget what farm fresh food tastes like as we are all used to shopping at grocery stores. Also the architecture on the island is fascinating, with many different time periods on display, sometimes mixed together in the same building. And any WWII buffs will appreciate visiting sites where battles took place as Sicily was a strategic milestone in the war.
Yes I agree but also it can get very hot in Sicily so unfortunately you can’t always see the volcano clearly
Wonderful insights, clothes from citrus peel. Amazing
Thanks a lot to show like this my island.Mamma Etna everywhere in my Heart!!!❤️ti amo terra mia❤️🙏
Another Mediterranean journey : Sicily, Italy🇮🇹.
Small country.
From orange fibers to fashion industry, migration problem everything nicely explored DW.
Good.
I Love the - " Mediterranean Journeys " a paradise waiting to be discovered 😍
I was there a year before the pandemic, amazing place.
It looks like an new documentary, from winter 2021
I love the Mediterranean countries! I have been to Italy 6 time's but I mostly spend time in Napoli, Pompeii, Capri, Rome, Florence, Torino, Milano and 4times to Venice. Next time it's be the Adriatic coast+ Sicily 😊
visit calabria too, is wonderful
Visit molise too, does it even exist?
italy is not all a med country! North Italy has nothing of mediterranean... The climate is Alpine, the culture is far from mediterranean... People are more closed here.
Weekdays rest to watch some documentaries of the world is always relaxing and charming.
Thanks for your share.
Love respect and support Italy and its beautiful people from Pakistan 🙂. Love respect and support Italy sovereignty and territorial integrity from Pakistan 🙂

always love mediterranean documentary. Thanks DW for bringing this up
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
You can tell the journalist had a packed day by how she kept her sunglasses on through every scene, incl. in a snow blizzard
This Mediterranean documentary is fantastic!
DW is the best! Thank you always.
Here because of the Netflix series From Scratch. Though I have known Sicily for quiet a long time (just a little knowledge though), but the movie awakens a little awareness of this beautiful island.
Wow great video my friends thanks for sharing your time with us 2 Canadians 🇨🇦 living in Mexico Yucatan Peninsula ✌️🐶🥰
Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our channel for more content. :)
Love your documentatories . Thank you so much.❤️🌹
Palermo has everything, it can rule itself. Agriculture, Mountains, treater and so much more, that's why Hightower is loved. every district, county is magnificent stable, no need to migrate anywhere, resources are equally distributed across the county.
But it also has big unemployment and criminality
@@vincenzostr4488 yes but during a nuclear war threat period, if shit hits the fan and society/capitalism would suddenly kollapse, I'd rather find myself in Sicily where the soil is so fertile that will keep you alive and well fed very easily.
@@yaylah7314 If there is a nuclear exchange there will be a nuclear winter to follow and everyone will be screwed when it comes to growing food and surviving. This notion that the planet will easily survive a nuclear war is fiction.

I haven't been to Sciliy , I awhile being part. I really love the heritage
DW DOCS ARE SPLENDID 🔥
Thank you DW again. The message at the end was beautiful and extremely important. All people want freedom, democracy, and the chance to develop their talents. Dictators in search of power beware!!!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, Barry.
14:48 As a Mexican this resonates with my soul.
Thank you for educating the world about Sicily! We do the same on our channel. One of the additions would be about Archimedes from Siracusa.
The mayor is a true humanitarian❤
great work
Sicily is the secret gem of Italy that we still didn't realise its potential. In the past,. Muslims and Christians lived here together in harmony. I can see it in the near future as the Arab migration is increasing rapidly. I think that illegal immigrants is destroying the country's economic. But more legal immigrants and giving the chance of illegal immigrants to stay in the southern Italy can really make a positive difference for the both parties. Integrating in an Italian society is very easy and fast. As my parents are Bangladeshi immigrants, I always felt that I am an Italian. (I didn't knew about Bangladesh that much)
You can say I was a full Italian. Also, love Italy very much- because I never felt any islamophobia here. Italians are real people. From heart
As a Sicilian with an interest in History, I can assure you that muslims and christians didn't live in harmony. The muslims tried to submit and destroy christianity many times in Sicily, and when the christians conquered again the island, after a brief period of peace, they expelled (or worse) the remaining muslims. The idea that these to religions lived here in harmony is a common mistake, I have to say
@@esti-od1mz I didn't know this fact. But I heard when the nomads controlled Sicily, both religion lived together. Also in that time Sicilian architects were on the peak. Just think if the Muslims stayed another 1-2 century. I see a mind blowing city with mosques and church scattering together.
Yes, the ruler didn't let this both groups to live in peace. But it is true that in that time, all people lived in concord.
As a Sicilian what do you think 🤔 about making the southern Italy great again?
Can we see this in our lifetime or is it fairly tale?
And the bridge connecting Sicily?
Do you see an economic miracle in the Sicily near future?
@@MainulWasTaken to be fair, churches were not allowed during the muslim period. The muslims took over the churches and made them mosques, and the christians had to attend mass in segret. Unfortunately, no muslim architecture remain in Sicily, since the architecture we call arabonormand actually was ddveloped during the norman rule. I would not say that the islamic era was a "golden age" for Sicily, since it was after all a foreign rule. The kingdom of Sicily, which developed later, was really the golden age for Sicily
@@esti-od1mz It is a common myth, indeed. Some even think there is Arabic architecture in Sicily - there is not. I don't really like the spread of historical myths in the name of integration.
No, f4ck multikulti
I love Dw documentary it gives more knowledge
Will love to see such documentaries from DW about Indian culture, tradition & people. Discovery plus has made several good documentaries depicting India. Will wait for DW creative team to describe India.
Incredible India remember. You don't need DW documentary, you already known to the world because of Bollywood

Thank you for watching, Mohammed. 😊
Class! Bravo!👏👏
See you again Sicily
Am I the only one to get disturbed by MUZAK at the same time as talk - and DUBBING with two languages simultaneously - instead of subtitles?????? Or JUST hearing the translation!
Agrigento is fascinating, and Taormina is beautiful shame you didn't cover both
I know, no one is intrested in technical issues but give it a chance: 1. az the beginning of the video the background music is so loud even the narration is supressed. Not a singular case, I have experienced it in other dw docus. 2. Later on, when ones talk in a typical interview situation the ambient sound is as much loud as the human voice therefore it is challenging sometimes to grip the point of the interviewee.
The orange pill is eatable ! I always put in the juicer the entire orange for years!
Dw covers up so many countries yeah the Mediterranean climate is giod theres plenty of fruits n the people r good thank ❤🌹🙏u DwTeam n the journalists too ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm watching from Bangladesh.
DW, will there be a documentary on Sardinia?☺️
I live in Syracuse. (Syracuse, NY).
Very nice
I cast these video's too my tv, and use the tv remote to zip through the ads.
17.10.2022.Very good and best.
I wonder how Sicilians feel about the way their Island was presented by the two journalists of DW. The Sicily I visited many years ago was enchanting. The one I saw in the documentary is uninteresting. The journalists spoke about the democratization taking place in the South, yet they ignore that this is an island with deep democratic roots from the antiquity. In my opinion they did not do the island justice, they presented a gray soup.
Most people think that Mount Etna dominates the whole island. But Sicily is so large, Etna has no impact on the western part of Sicily. From Palermo to Mount Etna is a distance almost 300km
Love the moroccan girl views.
Too many ads. I may watch later.
Reporter are very nice
Catania 🌋💙♥️

OPEMM
DW, please listen to an old Denmark journalist and former tv-producer, giving you some constructive criticism:
The mayor of Palermo is almost impossible to understand, because he doesn't speak proper English. So DW, you should put sub-texts under those, who are interviewed, to ensure they're being understood.
That goes for the entire documentary - Instead of having annoying narrators speak over those who are interviewed.
Thank you
The Völve
The female narrator explaining the blood orange is the relaxing part of DW travel documentary. Whenever I hear her voice, I knew it will be an interesting journey. It's hard to understand the mayor, I still got what he meant by playing back with "CC' for the most part, listening to the Italian dialogue reminds me of my holidays in other parts of Italy
Absolutely correct Heid !!
If the majoris almoust impossible tò understand ,couldn't you read the subtitles ?What Orlando Is saying Is something revolutionary nowadays even It you don't like it!
Rather underdeveloped, therefore interesting for travelers.
Other thing is to live there 😱
What do you mean by rather underdeveloped? It is not underdeveloped at all. You are another jealous foreigner, no doubt from a nothing country compared to any place in Italy and when in Italy must always come up with a negative, for the most part imagined. How come you don't do it in other countries? Don't come back, you hateful bigot!
From which point of view Sicily isn't developed in your opinion? and why it's such a nightmare to live here?
@@dariopalumbo5860 High unemployment, not well industrialized, and still a heavy Mafia presence.

If youre a politician from Netherlands or UK, you CAN retire in Spain. But they want Sicily. Currency is a social contract, they can type whatever number in the bank and thats money. nobody is selling anything
Re over dubbing. The producer has to make up their mind whether to have the local spoken language with English subtitles or simply over-dubbed in English but not someone speaking in the local language and someone else speaking English at the same time.

My italian chief engr on container ship live there .
My travel itinerary was basically birthplaces of mobsters lmao
I've been Sicily in 2011 it was great I went to see the statue of La Mafia, Toto Riina you were much better than the government Mafia.
Sicily is poor with big unemployment. Malta is much better for job opportunities
HAHAHAHA!!!
A very good dw show without climate change hullabaloo
Beautiful country. Let's hope it doesn't turn more fascist.
Well, in that case, I have news for you, mate.
Agreed 💯👍
Don't worry, the government is already about to fall even before it is voted in
Right government != fascist. Stop using that word for anything that you dislike.
Italy has a constitution, a president, judiciary system separated by the political system, two separated chamber of government (Senate and Chamber of Ministers) and 2 different police forces created just to avoid any authoritarian shift.
Everything has been split in 2 and no branch can rule without the other, so it is impossible for Italy to become a fascist regime , although it is also impossible to rule without almost 70% of agreement between everyone, which is why italy has so many government every year
Don't worry, it's time for ITALY to be great again with the RIGHT government.
How did Mexicans exchanged chocolate for mafia?
In many Mexican towns there are "plazas" or "comisión" collectors.
Tell her 2 learn English!
That store has got to be the most delusional person in the world if she thinks that a piece of sign alone is what’s keeping the mafia from coming to collect money from her 😂
That would be like someone wearing a shirt that says “don’t shoot me” and walking around the wrong neighborhood in Chicago late at night and thinking “geez…. The sign on this shirt works 👍”
😐
Because you are not sicilian and you don't know really what means run a business with mafia on your shoulder. Very esay to criticize.
this girl seems impatient whenever people she interviewed is speaking. so annoying.
08:55
I don't know how tactful this is for the host to entertain an Arab speaking guest with a puppet show of a knight killing a Muslim fighter.
It was several centuries ago and she didn't seem to mind it.
haha true, but history is history and I am sure in arab countries have the same dramas. In a way I think these crossed stories just make us closer to each others.
She had no problem lavishing praise on israel as Palestinians are being murdered and brutalized just a few miles away, so there's that. >_>
It's a puppet show about sicilian legends from centuries ago and it's actually a beautiful rare cultural display. Get a grip please.
I am sure you meant two knights fighting each other
She is the amongst the few I want to mate with
Good up until it becomes shit at the 17:30 mark.
Didnt even mention the mafia once lol
