- What's it like living in the shadow of the most active volcano in the world?
Simon Platts explores volcano tourism and the complicated relationship Sicilians have with Mount Etna, the volcano affectionately known as 'Mama' by locals despite its huge destructive potential
In the grip of mother nature, science and faith intertwine, but volcanologists relentlessly monitor the site for signs of eruptions. So, what measures are in place to protect tourists and locals?
My wife & I went to the summit of Etna in July 2019. An incredible experience the sound of explosions & constant rumblings are unbelievable.
We had a fantastic guide put in on your must do list.
Seems like a bad idea....
@@octavius8562 how many tourists have died? 0
I happened to watch live streaming from Skyline cam when the eruption suddenly blew and lots of people were hurt near the eruptions. A piece of molten rock hit a British news reporter. I never forget that. From the Skyline cam, I knew it was massive and began to see many "buses" going down the mountain. The next day, I read about this event.
aside from the extreme drama of this video, yes there are a few dangers, as come with any volcano but, as someone who lives around the "Muntagna" (that's how we actually call it), i can confidently say that Etna is one of the safest volcanoes to visit and live under. The vast majority of lava flows end up in the old caldera, called Valle del Bove, which shields us from most eruptions. As they also said in the video, it's one of the most monitored and studied volcanoes in the world and its constant activity makes for less pressure in the magma chamber, which means less disruptive earthquakes, shorter, less expansive effusions and a spectacle out of your window almost any other day.
FANTASTIC
Imagine all of you that I live right here. 😍
Typhon is in the volcano if you know about Greece that Zeus fought typhon
And prison him in a mountain and mountain became a volcano name etna
Mt. Etna makes big boom sound then Mt. Vesuvius, Etna is dangerous. Etna rains Gravel.
i'll be there next week, i'll need warm clothing too..... almost 10 thousand feet
Liked for Boris. And because Etna is cool.
Etna is not a "mama", its not a person.
We italians (sicilians) call it like that, you don't agree on this?
Vatican will sink in a giant sea of boiling hot magma.
Vatican is in Rome, Central Italy... 🤯
sheesh... anthropologists really did screw us over convincing us we monkeys evolved somewhat
They Say in Greek Mythology, Etna was considered to be a Prison that held one of the most powerful monsters. The father of monsters "Typhon" who was created by Mother Earth "Gaia" to overthrow the King of the Gods "Zeus".
But Zeus was able to defeat Typhon by smashing him with an entire mountain which is Mount Etna.
Every time when Etna starts spitting lava or Showing Smoke, It was Typhon trying to get out of the mountain.
Wow I didn't know that, thanks!
Thanks for this...Simon Platts..I am Scottish living in Sicily and I adore Etna I see her from my villa everyday and she takes my breath away :)

Taormina?
Bless Ur beautiful heart. She means so much to us. I live in Australia and wear her around my neck
I live in Catania (the city at the beginning of the video), and this video makes it look like I live in the most dangerous city in the world XD it’s not that bad really, I love living next to Mt. Etna
😍Love To Live by Mama!! 🌋
@@abbaruah9685 what?
@@abbaruah9685 its fine, I’ve been living here since I was born, and so my family, and friends and everyone else… it’s one of the most populated areas in the country still, it is pretty much safe, we go skiing and do hiking on the volcano normally
bet you won't be thinking that when it erupts for real pompeii style
Never having visited Sicily, I had no idea Etna was so active. Thank you for sharing.

Respecting Mother Nature is the Key..
My Blessings for Italy!!
Typical bbc acting, driven above all by greed to get alluring material. Got well deserved lesson from nature this time
No mother nature. It's God who created nature.
Mother nature is some form of witchcraft.
@@MrJuulia01 your quite right cause Zeus put a huge mountain on a creature name typhon which is etna
Italy is dynamic like the south Asia.
Man... You needs guts to be a Italian... Now i learn
If that thing Blows Its Top everybody's gone. You won't be able to move fast enough before that shit comes down on top of you. I was in Colorado and Mount Saint Helens went off. That made a big mess
sicilian or, even better, "catanese" mostly, because the rest of the nation and cities of the region are far away from the etna...
@@rockodibiase6805 the typical activity of the etna have nothing in common with mount St helens (or vesuvio etc)...the most destructive eruption recorded, back in 1669, reach the city of catania with lava after about three months from his start...
Italians: living under the most active volcano
Ecuadorians: Casually living in between 17 volcanoes
In Italy there are more and more active volcanoes on the land and other very dangerous submarine (for now very little active, fotunately) and a super volcano (campi Flegrei). The difference with your volcanoes is that Etna and Stromboli are continously active
Sicily, which is an island, not Italy.
@@aimee-lynndonovan6077 What?! Ahahah!!
@@elisabettacarrubba2957 And Etna is worrying because it shouldn't happen almost every day like it shouldn't have snowed that much in Apulia. Global warming signs.. I know it is supposed to erupt frequently, but not that much.
@@aimee-lynndonovan6077So by your logic Hawaii isn't part of the Usa,your level of stupidity is astounding.
The highlight of my trip to Sicily 💜 can’t wait to return some day...
There is a German expression for maniacs that get excitement from being close to danger. 'Tanz auf dem Volkan' or 'Volkan Tanzer' The people could move away but they feel comfortable there.
We feel comfortable because it's our home. Generally, you don't want to move away from your home. And also because it's well monitored. The last fatality is from 1987 (2 tourists). And it's also great for your instagram ;)
@@UncommonSense-wm5fd if there's one fool here its you, active volcanoes are the least problematic to humans, dormant and supervolcanoes are the most dangerous like yellowstone in the Usa or the Phlegrean fields in Italy.
@@UncommonSense-wm5fd You certainly don't know Italy well, the people who consider themselves religious is in steep decline in the last 30 years especially in the north, people live at the foot of Etna even before christianity was born, about covid, you do realize that we were the first western country to be hit with the pandemic, right?how about The UK then they got hit later and got more deaths, are they too religious too?
Nice documntary. However at 4:07 we see the town of Zafferana Etnea, not Nicolosi! Errata corrige is needed, thanks.

In the late 90s a bunch of my navy buddies and I hiked to the craters edge it was amazing!
Oh man thought you were talking about liberating Europe last century, it was a nice talk but you still here there and everywhere, ffs you all over the places exporting peace friend
I was just thinking, "Anyone down to hike Etna?" lol, smh I don't think i could.

I've been to Mt Etna, thank God those all terrain boots was too much to pay for in a one time use situation. Its beautiful.
Very nice documentary! Salve Boris! :)
Italy at its finest 🇮🇹
I went to see this stunning volcano i think it was in 2007 she was erupting off and on. There was a little activity when we ascended. She was magnificent and not only that but the beautiful island of sicily and all the gorgeous towns and the lovely people that reside there. Just an entirely wonderful experience. I hope to one day return to this beautiful and and Its wonderful volcano again ❤️
Three years ago the explosion was caused by contact between lava and snow.
those tourist is crazy taking risk on Enta when it erupted well that teaches them a lesson for getting too close, insurance doesn't cover that lol 😂🤣😂
Heard they filmed one of the eruptions for a Star Wars film once. It’s where Obi Wan fights Anakin in the volcano planet
Most people think that Mount Etna dominates all of Sicily, but Sicily is a very big island! Mount Etna is on the East Coast, we on the west coast are over 200 km away from Mount Etna! Palermo and all the other cities on the West Coast have no issues with Etna!
Yep,Sicily is the largest island in the mediterrean, very few people know that.
If Etna blows, 200km wouldn’t be near enough
Me being a absolute scaredy cat with volcanoes, how people can live in Catania I will never know
Greetings From iceland :)
Io vivo li' , e non mi sento in pericolo
I'm sicilian and I'm so proud of INGV but the teacher with imaginary friends scares me!
Just nature is too scary for a lot of people, so they search for a reason.
Breath taking ' Mama ' Etna ! I am so Blessed to watch God's wonderful creation from my home INDIA ! No need to ware the heavy boots ! God bless and protect the people of Etna !
WOOOOOW MIS RESPETOS PARA ESTA GENTE CIENTÍFICA!
Volcanos do exact a sometimes drastic pain and suffering "tax" on humans getting too close. Don't expect anything else.
There's so much more than that tax 😂
i wonder if science has made people more faithful in catania and in villages around etna. or maybe the gap between science and reality (the beta if you will) is still large enough to leave space for prayers and religion?
my 'volcano' is my childs mouth. very unpredictable what will be ejected.

2:29 current objective: survive (ironic comment)
Don't know exactly, but from a prophet of The LORD (paraphrasing) soon part of Etna will sink and tilt on it's axis. This act of GOD is against the evil dealings in Italy's government leaders...
Excellent new around the Etna volcano. I live in Valparaiso city port in Chile country. In this moment the north to Chile in the south to Atacama desert -between Loa river to Choapa river- is a red zone from physical geography and the new activities de volcano in the Andes Mountain; for example, the Licancabur volcano, the Ollague volcano, the Llullaillaco volcano and the Socompa volcano in the desert puna to Antofagasta Region.
And then in Mediterranean Region to Chile is very necessary the new station around the volcano activities near Teno lake into the Andes Mountains to Curico province and de Maule lake near the international rute to "Paso Pehuenche", the conection by card and bus to Malargue in Mendoza province and Talca city in Chile. In this moment is frecuenty the volcano activities in the Chile country and the south west to Sudamerica in front the Pacific ocean.

So if you're getting data, why were tourists unaware and on the slopes? Tourists were still caught in an unsafe situation.

I thought the worlds most active was in Hawaii. But then again. What if its Yellowstone that's most active? There are times when etna is not erupting so I disagree with the title.

Kilauea has been active only for decades. Etna has been highly active since written history exists, taking only few and briefs pauses in all his centuries of history. I went last summer and it was very windy, was this a normal occurrence?
yes, why shouldn't it be?
Even when you go to the tourist rendezvous at the restaurant and souvenir shop, you're 1.8km above sea level, it's windy near the top of a mountain.
And it's pretty cold, too, one young lady who was with us had come in a crop top and a thin cardigan, she was awfully cold; we'd brought fleeces and windcheaters, as we would for a day out in the Derbyshire dales.
