- Happy World Goth Day! For the occasion I've decided to finally do The Goth Tag. I've actually had trouble answering these questions in the past, which is why I haven't done it until now. I suppose, though, it's better late than never. I just hope I didn't waffle on too much for you! Please let me know if you have any questions and I will happily answer them.
I would also love it if you'd answer the tag questions yourself in the comments below, or make your own video and comment that you did so that I can watch it!

Maybe it's because I'm old (not really but old enough to be an elder goth) and have been goth forever but I also hate the term baby bat. It discredits and devalues people who are new to the subculture. I feel like it pushes them away instead of being welcoming or inviting. It's cool if someone wants to call themselves a baby bat but I don't use the term to describe others. Calling someone a baby bat sort of sounds like they are on their trial period to see if they end up accepted in the group. It feels weirdly sort of elitist to me.
Also, I love how you navigated these questions in such a kind and accepting way. Some of these things can be controversial and divisive but you managed to handle it all in a way that wouldn't leave anyone feeling excluded. I wish more goth RUclipsrs and goths in general would take that approach.

I mean, even if you're 12 and getting into the scene, you're still not an infant. I'd definitely never want to use it in a way that made someone feel less than equal to me or anyone else. 🖤

"Baby Bat" is one of those things, like the "goth types," which started up on Usenet's alt.gothic newsgroup, the old 1990s bulletin and message boards, etc..., that was kind of a net.goth in-joke, back in the day, very tongue-in-cheek, and not really intended to be taken seriously.
Then, for some reason, the next generation who got into goth when LiveJournal started being a Big Deal (so early to mid-00s?), I dunno, it slowly became a Real Thing, and here we are, today.

I kinda like the term. It seems like an endearing way of referring to those who are new to the scene, but are still knowledgeable enough to become an actual Goth.
It isn't derogatory in the same way "mallgoth" or "poseur" are. I see it the same as referring to someone as an eldergoth.

I loved your answers to the questions! I’m always fascinated to hear everyone’s stories of how they came into the subculture. Why? Because the scene is so diverse and everyone is different and has different stories of how they fell in love with and became goth. I loved your answer about “what is goth?” And I love your no-nonsense response about sub genres. It’s so fucking unnecessary!

Wow I did hear you say mid eighties. We must be in the same age group. I started taking imterest and hanging with friends when I was about 15. I discovered more and more about the scene and how awesome it truly is. The darker the bettet was the way I felt. I had and still have no desire to fit in. We all hung out as a bunch of misfits and that's the way it was. Still part of the scene and will be for life. Thanks so much for this great video.

Haha chat rooms were a big thing when I was 12 too. I got catfished when I was 13 and this kid told me he was Vision from tragic Black. Probably one of the first people to ever be catfished but I did discover one of my favorite bands that way.

Yeah.... the baby bat term is kinda weird. I hear lots of other people use it and it’s not something I care for but it is a cute term just not my go to word to express my young goth years lol.

In regards to the Baby bay term I had never heard of it until the recent years from the Internet, mainly RUclips
I think it’s pretty lame but I’m someone who always rejected labeling myself a goth or having other people labeling me as goth. I’ve never felt gothic even though I listen to a lot of goth music and dress in black. I really don’t like the use of labels because I feel like if I want to change up my style or listen to music outside of the “normal” it’s looked down upon? Idk. I just didn’t see any benefits to using labels on myself.

I was 13 when I was introduced. My friends were all different. I was mostly in the Eugene, Oregon scene...but too young to go anywhere like a club. We hung at one another's homes, parks, Coffee houses, the mall...places our parents or the bus could take us..lol. We walked around town and drove in our older friend's cars, too. And CHAT ROOMS!!! I was on Real vampires, too...lol There was so much...I am 35 this late October, so I'm with ya...haha

I never heard of baby bad before this video lol. And you look so pretty! And I never had someone to talk to about being goth. I’ve always been surrounded by work out people and nerds and gamers. If I had to label myself it would be a gamer nerd goth. Sadly I live in an area that does not have goth people around so I never really got to hang and learn from them. I’m happy that you had a nice introduction to goth and has other friends that see eye to eye. : )

Even though a lot of people devalue the internet these days(especially when it comes to the Goth scene) I think it's SO essential for people who live in certain areas and may feel isolated. I probably could have found some goth people to hang out with but I already had my friends and was very shy so making new friends was super scary. I would say if always had an edgy side but also bohemian sometimes too. Weird.

Myself is an elder one. Gonna be 50 in August. Think I already had the most intrests before I even knew what goth was. More into clubs were first when I was around 25-30. So I was late when it comes to the club scene.
Nowadays most friends are gone from that part. Some went over to more vintage style from the 50s and 60s.
Myself haven't changed inside. But I'm not that extreme looking nowadays. But I'm still a goth.
For me It's not just a phase.

First....that thumbnail is everything, ahhahahaha! XD Second....yes, yes, YESSSS on the fucking "baby bat" term. The way you described it as being something that was more said in jest is very true. I'm 35, NO ONE wanted to be called "baby bat" back then in a serious way, or even kidding really. That was a term you wanted to avoid in yourself, lol. I can't stand that term in the way it has become either.
As for Manson, agree! I was obsessed with him and NIN back in my high school days. From his early days in the Spooky Kids up until Antichrist...and then Mechanical Animals happened. -_- Like you, I only liked a couple of songs off that album, and then things just went downhill. Even though I still to this day adore his stuff pre Mechanical, he kind of died musically for me after that. Although I did like some songs off of Pale Emperor, surprisingly. But that's about it.

....and until about a year ago I had only heard baby bats...the flying creature...referred to as such. Now I call my kids this because they love dressing dark and love Hotel Transylvania..so they wamte to.
I got into the net.goth scene through waningmoon.com and they did have a dating site and message boards, plus the corporate goth mailing list - oh my god, anyone remember mailing lists? Thank God nobody uses those now, my email us too full as it is! We all met us yearly at Convergence. I'm friends with many of those folks still :)

SaraMonster -I’ve never heard any of my goth friends say it in the real world. I’ve only heard it said on RUclips and the internet. Even in the 90’s when I was heavy in the goth scene in San Fran. I don’t necessarily hate the term but it’s something I’ve never heard spoken until I started watching goth RUclipsrs.
Sara Monster - I asked my sister (who’s heavy in the scene) and lives in a bigger city than me if she had heard of the baby bat term in the real world. She said yes, but the term used back in the day was kinder goth. (Kindergarten) Which is worse? Lol.

I listened to Manson in the late 90's-2000's. Not a lot, but some. My musical taste is quite scattered. My favorite band isn't goth. Oh no! Haha!

Sara Monster I do listen to mostly goth music and classical...which is my favorite type on the regular. My favorite band is Sting and the Police...and I love Björk, Peter Gabriel, NIN, Tool, Cyndi Lauper...etc. My most favorite thing to listen to is very involved, dramatic, solemn, complex choral singing! I literally shudder and cry and get goosebumps. My son has the same reaction. I watch royal weddings so I can skip to musical parts...oh my heck I cry. Not ashamed. I was also born to musician parents in 1983, so...there's that. I have a lot of their tastes in Led Zeppelin, old Metallica, Jazz, Blues, anything old New Orleans...(omg Anne Rice), and yes..I do shut up....when I'm sleeping. I wish we could just sit and have lunch or something in the future. Haha! Fini
