My introduction to the broader "dark music" would be 'Music For The Masses' by Depeche Mode which, predictably, led on to The Cure, Siouxsie, The Sisters, The Mission etc. back in the mid-Eighties(yiiiekes! I am now 47!)
These days, there are lots of sounds to choose from, not all Goth: Mercury's Antennae, Hante, Gitane Demone Quartet, Pleasure Symbols,The Eden House,Oake, Factice Factory and more...

Live performance of a band can really change someone's opinion of the music of a band. Some bands sound amazing live while others sound awful.

Hey there. I was the one who originally started this tag to answer the question of who started it. The original draft for the tag was actually gonna be 22 questions but my friends suggested that I whittle it down to a more digestible amount and I ended up settling with 14 questions instead LOL. And to answer the other question, I wanted the tag to be strictly on Goth and it's 4 other sub-genres (Deathrock, Darkwave, Coldwavw and Ethereal Wave) and nothing more because it's already bad enough that a good many people don't know what actual Goth music sounds like so part of the reason why I created the tag was to bring attention to actual Goth music for those who don't really know what Goth music is and that's why I didn't include questions about non Goth genres like Gothic Metal, Symphonic Metal, Black Metal, and Industrial (and it's many various sub-genres like EBM, Futurepop, Witch House, and Industrial Metal to name a few). Here's the original video if you wanted to see and can stomach my voice lol ( ruclips.net/video/L9liPDIbEgo/видео.html )
And I noticed you said that the 90s era of Goth was Industrial but that isn't true. Industrial was it's own music sub-genre and fun fact, it even predated Goth by 2 years, it was just even more underground than Goth was when it was starting. And the whole "Cyber Goth" thing, it wasn't actual Goth. It was spawned out of the Industrial and Rave scene, specifically EBM & Futurepop (which were Industrial sub-genres). The 90s had a lot of Goth bands coming out from all over the world ushering in the second wave of Goth music which was bands like London After Midngiht, Rosetta Stone, Miranda Sex Garden, Requiem in White, Switchblade Symphony, Love Spirals Downwards, This Ascension, Trance to the Sun, Paralysed Age, Lycia, and many others. The biggest thing that the 90s Goth brought was more of the fusion of Goth rock and Darkwave or Goth Rock and Ethereal Wave. The whole "Industrial was the new Goth" of the 1990s was a huge misconception that mostly spread from clueless mainstream media who didn't know (and didn't care) about what Goth actually was and assumed Goth died out when Goth's initial 80s boom was dying down towards the end of the decade and in actuality, the music scene went back underground and when the second wave bands (90s Goth) came out, not many people knew about them because they didn't get much mainstream attention like the 80s bands got and because the internet was still in it's early stages of development, a lot of these bands went unnoticed only to be discovered by more people many years later thanks to music archive sites like Discogs or SoulSeek.
On question 10 when you mentioned how you couldn't get into the Cocteau Twins because the ambience makes up the majority of their songs, I totally understand what you mean. This is why with that band, I only really like their first two albums Garlands (1982) and Head Over Heels (1983) because when they first started out, they were using straight up 80s Goth Rock / Post-Punk while the Ethereal was used as a undertone until they changed to outright Ethereal. If you haven't checked out their early stuff, I highly recommend it as I think you may like it. Try out songs "Blood Bitch", "In Our Angelhood", and "Five Ten Fiftyhold". :)
Also I see that some of the questios weren't interpreted right haha. These were the questions just to clear up any miscommunication.

Kai Decadence hello there. Firstly, thank you for creating the tag it truly was interesting.
However seeing many other people who do your tag I noticed that they have took the concept of your tag and loosely based their expression in regards to your questions.
As you mentioned you wanted to keep it to the four main genres, which is understandable and I can see where you are coming from, but to exclude other sub genres from the umbrella in my view seems like deliberate pigeonholing. Regardless if it’s goth metal or goth rock, as many people who started on goth metal ended up finding themselves to the basics of gothic rock, through the name.
As your comment about industrial and EBM culture I am aware that they are not directly related to the goth music genre (hence I made a video about this) but regardless no one can deny that the imagery and connotations of both genres have found themselves merged with the goth music label ( as many people wish it didn’t)
As for your questions I noticed after I was editing I did misread them without knowing as I genuinely think quicker than I speak, and tried to correct a couple.
Regardless. Thank you for the tag!

I have done your tag too, and it's really interesting. I really liked that you made a tag that's specific for goth music, and it's subgenres. You did a good job with the questions, and they are very thoughtfully made. It's clear that you took your time to make the questions relevant.

@@sweeneydeville598 I actually said 5 (Goth Rock, Deathrock, Darkwave, Ethereal Wave, and Coldwave in total) but I digress. And I know doing it this was is limiting but that wasn't a coincidence, I called it "Goth music tag" for that reason of keeping it strictly on Goth music and uh yeah, from the outside looking in it does look limiting but it really isn't because within the actiual Goth music genre, not all the bands sound the same and each of the different sub-genres has a certain spin on the foundation of Goth rock like Darkwave being more danceable or Ethereal Wave sounding more calm and atmospheric. A band like Sisters of Mercy does not sound like Diva Destruction or Christian Death or She Past Away or Mors Syphilitica or The Frozen Autumn and so on for example. And Gothic Metal is just Metal with classical (or rather neoclassical) mixture. It doesn't really use any actual Goth instrumentation hence why it's not a Goth sub-genre and is a Metal sub-genre because it draws all it's main focus from Metal (the heavy guitars and drumming) with the added in classical instruments and synth to add atmosphere. And it's the same with Industrial. The name for fans of Industrial are Rivetheads (used to be Industrialists) and the thing about the clubs back in the 90s catering to both scenes was not implying that they were the same, it was just a way to bring two subcultures together and make a profit in the clubs. It's like going to a music festival like Lolapalooza or Coachella where these events cater to multiple music-based subcultures. In their case, Alt. Rockers, Metalheads, Hip Hop Heads, Ravers, and Punk rockers.
But anyway that is why I structured this tag to be purely basedo n Goth music because Goth music unlike Metal cannot afford flimsiness because like I mentioned earlier, more than a good many people already have a confusing time learning what actual Goth music is and this tag is meant to help remedy that. It was mostly meant for the people who are into the genre and just want to nerd out about it. I mean there is already a Metal / Metalhead tag out there that lets people gush about their likeness for Metal so I just took the plunge and did this kind of thing for the Goth genre.
      Nonetheless, glad you enjoyed. :)

Kai Decadence Kai Decadence my apologies I misread when you said an additional four music sub genres.
In your response I will have to politely disagree as the structure of any music label doesn’t stop after a certain period. As any music genre has to adapt . I completely agree that genres like gothic metal and Industrial have to direct relation to the first blue prints of gothic rock but to limit and say metal can’t cross over, take the same illiteracy influence and lyrical references as it’s rock predecessors, is miss-underlining the point of a music genre.
That’s similar as saying as dark wave and cold wave is more synonymous as a gothic us genre but due to that reason is not allowed to be related within the new wave or synth label.
I don’t wish to drag out this debate any longer and I see where you’re coming from with your ideology, and whilst it seems like a cleverly thought out video where you talk within those five sub genres ( although I personally believe the goth sound is more expendable than five distinctive sounds)
But my point in bringing up the metal accept is because most people who did start off listening to ‘’goth” music at some point during their beginning stage was introduced to the gothic metal style first (especially during the baby bat era), that or emo , but hopefully more punk than the previous mentioned.
Please do not think of this as an attack on your tag, I think it’s a really fun tag (and a good debate is in order)
As much as I can agree that deathrock sounds completely different to darkwave but then you’ll only find yourself swimming around the same 5 fishballs and the water will merge.
But once again thank you for the tag :)
