- A playthrough of Sega's beat 'em up game for the Sega Genesis, Streets of Rage, as it appeared in the 1992 pack-in title for the Sega CD, Sega Arcade Classics Collection.
Played through as Adam on the normal difficulty level.
I'm using the original 4-in-1 disc here, but the game was also included on the the 1994 5-in-1 version.
There's overall not much difference between the original cartridge game and its "enhanced" Sega CD re-releases, but the collection versions replace all of the digitized voices, grunts, and screams with new samples recorded at much higher quality. It sounds strange - to me they sound wrong because they're almost too clean sounding compared to the Genesis version, and they all tend to be pretty goofy.
I'm not sure why they went to this amount of effort to improve the clarity of the audio when it doesn't seem as if they've touched anything else in the conversion, but I suppose that's alright. It's still Streets of Rage, after all, and it's still excellent.
If you'd like to compare it to the original, here's my recording of the Genesis game: • Streets of Rage (Genes...
It's a minor novelty, sure, but one that I felt was worth documenting through this new playthrough.

That soundtrack, man, that soundtrack. It's gonna be FOREVER one of my favorites. Love this game.
Lol. There's a mobile version and I came to the originals just to listen to the soundtrack, ahhh the memories!
I was born in 74', and I grew up in that glorious time. Wouldn't change it for anything in the world, and I still enjoy streets of rage to this day
I wa born in 83, and still play these amazing classics, now with my sons heh.
89 and Street of Rage best game.
+ 2000's, 2010's and 2020's suck.
There's not a ton of difference between the Genesis and the CD versions, but just listen to those ridiculous voice samples! Man I love Streets of Rage!
What's your thoughts on Street of range 4
0:34 [😌Sighs in nostalgic relief] *_"God, does this song always manage to bring back some great childhood memories!"_*
*_Streets of Rage_* . What can you say about this classic series of Beat em' Ups that hasn't been said a million times before? The colorful graphics, the fun and memorable characters and foes, the NOT Final Fight weapons like the Pipe and Knife, and *ESPECIALLY* the kick-ass soundtracks that these games have... and by that, I mean the first 2 game's soundtracks.
Still, Anyone who had a Genesis/Mega Drive back in the day should immediately remember these gaming greats. As it was one of the best early Genesis titles at that time.
While Beat em' Ups aren't my personal favorite genre of gaming, I really do get a kick out of most games that lie into that genre like, *_SoR_* , *_Golden Axe_* , *_Final Fight_* , *_Captain America & the Avengers_* (Genesis & Arcade), the often forgotten *_Dungeons & Dragons_* Beat em' Ups, and even the *_Sailor Moon_* Beat em' Up games are great.
I have *LOADS* of great childhood memories of playing these games with my friends at our local Arcades and at sleepovers. (Though, most of my guy friends were always not up to playing a Sailor Moon game... It's a good thing that I've always had some cool female gamer friends that were not like the many douchebags back in the 90s that made fun of or bullied people liking things like Sailor Moon).
But enough about my reminiscing childhood... *_On With SoR on Sega CD!_*
POSITIVES
• *Great Graphics* (Would've liked to see a little more color, given that this is on the Sega CD, But better safe than... taking a bad risk... Ah, whatever! It's the best I could think of!)
• *Great Music* (Also unchanged from its Genesis counterpart. *HERE* , it's really a let down. Just imagine the already great Genesis OST as if it were given the redbook CD quality audio treatment. It would be freaking *awesome!* )
• *Still 2P* (... Yeah... it really doesn't do much to update from its original version... it's still a fine way to play SoR, no doubt... but...)
NEGATIVES
• *Doesn't Really do Anything New* (We got updated voiceovers that oddly enough sound pretty bad. The original Genesis counterpart somehow manages to win with its distorted voiceovers. You'd think it would sound a lot better, but these sound *INCREDIBLY* goofy and not as charming. Seriously, try to *NOT* laugh at Adam's jump kick.)
Final Rating: 9/10
No doubt a good way to play SoR, but I really wish that more effort was put into enhancing the original version with stuff like CD audio or more stages, characters, etc.
Definitely one of the most "play it safe" conversions I've ever seen.
This must be the only time you'll see the arcade port of Streets of Rage despite not having an arcade release in the first place.
WHOYAH! I'm cracking up at this.

I love your comment reviews!
I love the whole vibe of this game
A shame they didn’t give this the same treatment as Final Fight CD, hearing cd-quality renditions of Yuzo’s score alongside cheesy voice acting for the intro cutscene and dialouge would’ve been great
Maybe it would have received that treatment if it was released on the PC Engine CD. Pretty much every game from that console had cd-quality music, animated cutscenes, and voice acting.

It's a good option to play the original SoR, but I still wish that more effort was put into polishing it with new content or even enhanced audio.
Sega was rather lazy here.
This is how I was introduced to Streets of Rage, when I got my Sega CD for Christmas 92, as I had somehow not played it before then on the Genesis. Became an immediate fan, though, and I think this was one of the many pack-in games that came with the Sega CD that I played the most.
Can’t go wrong with SOR music.
That version of Golden Axe had enhanced music that sounded a little better than the cart or arcade, I think. Although I like SOR's music a lot, I kind of wish some of its CD version could have been put on that collection too for this game.
@@msd5808 Yeah, Golden Axe's soundtrack was replaced with a recording of the arcade one.
I first encountered this on the Six Pak.
Me too lol,that's pretty cool having a 6 in 1 cartridge. 😁😁😀😀
Same here! Christmas! 1995 I think.
@@rockandrolf8611 A great way to get started on the system.
@@Desmaad heck yea definitely
I still have streets of rage 1 and 2 on my sega genesis, and just watching this brings back memories of those hot summer nights under the ac unit, me and my brother playing the hell outta this when we were kids, man the nostalgia is extremely real and goddamn the music was dope af,I'm definitely about to purchase streets of rage 4 very soon
Duuude, I love full play throughs. Excellent quality and run dawgy!
SoR1 has by far the best soundtrack in the entire series. It's like we're clubbing to Electro/Dance while beating up bad guys. Violent Breathing is my absolute favorite tune, with The Last Soul my second favorite.
I agree. Especially stage 2 and stage 8 music.
I prefer 2’s but this is awesome too. 3 is ok.
2 had the best bro. 2,1,3
Came for the gameplay, stayed cuz of badass music. I haven’t seen or listened to this game for far too long.
I was literally going to say the same thing. But I own it both on cart and the PS3.
yep
The yelling and screaming here might be my favorite thing.
I thought the voice samples were edited in! That scared me! But all's worth to play streets of rage I suppose...
Un clasico de los 90 los street of rage junto con los final fight , cadillac dinosaurios, el capitán comando
Brings back memories of 1993
I always love how Mr. X sends everyone barefisted or with pipes and knives and at the end he's like, "Ahahahaha sucker" and pulls out a machine gun.
Oooooooooo WOW NOSTALGIA (Thanks :)
One of my favourites
Also the best sound track videogame best nostalgia
Enemies whenever they get defeated in the Sega Genesis version: Argh!
Enemies whenever they get defeated in the Sega CD version: Eh.
any way you play it, always a classic. Best quadrilogy beat'em up of all time.
Quadrilogy? Like the old Alien box set? ;p
@@NintendoComplete yassir
@@NintendoComplete You should check out the new SoR 4. Totally different art style but same game in fun and spirit.
@@GrumpyBearRawr I bought it the day it came out, I loved it!
@@GrumpyBearRawr I am not a fan of the new art style, but I *LOVE* the game.
I wouldn't say that it's *SoR 2* , but *JESUS* is it good!
Now, this game's has looks even better.
The soundtrack from started was
kill it God damnit
Yeah it sounds really odd now, like a person in the room is playing along with the game and doing the voices. Who DID do these? I hear Yuzo Koshiro himself did the voices in the original Genesis version (just pitching it up for the women screaming, for example), is it him here too?
Yes, but modifie
I had this, I used to play *"Columns"* more than any other game on that Disc.
After Noticing Golden Axe, gotta say it's a Darn Shame *"The Revenge of Death Adder"* never made it to any Home Console.
Gaming is where it`s at.. and Hip-Hop ! nice video
Well played.....thanks!
What I like about this version is that the voice clips don’t interrupt the music cause it’s probably playing off of the Sega CD’s Ricoh sound chip (which is actually very similar to the snes sound chip)
Still my favourite scrolling beat em up game on any system. I got this on cartridge when it came out after seeing it in a game shop being played. Always loved the special attack with the police car. As I always played in one player mode I didn’t realise for ages that in two player the police car has a different attack. Got this as a cd pack in game with my multi mega which I bought in 1995 as they were selling them off in curry’s store for £99, and at that time I couldn’t afford a Sega Saturn at £400.
I feel like watching someone play it is better than playing it yourself.👊
One of the Best games every created on the genisis
Congratulations, you're a quite impressive player, getting almost no hit at all!
Request: can you also do the CD playthrough with the other playable characters in other videos? I wonder what their voice lines sound like in it.
I will NEVER forget the 1st time I played this on the genesis when it was new...the opening track of level 1...just "hit you" and you knew you were in for something special. NOBODY forgets the combination of thrill and fear the first time they heard that BOSS music track thump to life!
5:31 they ended up using that death cry on streets of rage 2 just slightly lowered
This, Final Fight CD and Golden Axe. My all time favourite side scrolling beat em ups.
Man, you are raging, in the streets.
It really looks the same as the Genesis version. It’s like they made no effort.
I agree that some of the voice samples are strange, but they are less funny than the « woooo » from Batman Forever : The Arcade Game on PS1.
Or the woo from Moonwalker
NintendoComplete i heard that. It’s nice.
To be fair, it came in pack in collection. If it was a standalone release, it would probably have more features.
Big Boy thanks for the information😊.
4:42 oh no... ms. hunter's scream 😁😁😁
Sound like whistling
Damn, that soundtrack is nice. Completely forgot about it
Love the opening music....epic!!!
Dude I loved the sega cd version of streets of rage. When axel did his jump kick he sounded like jean Claude Van damme going baaaaagggggghhhhh
The grunts sound different...
0:22 funny how we had Sega classics back then. We still get them now. No Sega ages phantasy star but I'll take fast forward/rewind/save state PS4
Cheater
@@tartuffethesprywonderdog5883 it's just an RPG. Not like I'm saying I'm setting a record. Let Alone those functions are quality of life. Even switch online for nes and snes have rewind and save state for offline play.
@@MrVariant being able to walk faster in PSII is not cheating :) Well, it may ruin the Zen-like experience the game originally had :D
@@msd5808 those dungeons and having to frequently return to power level was a pain. PS4 had far better pacing
Não tem como irmão, continuarei a jogar a versão de Sega Genesis, pois aqueles sons roucos é nostalgia pura, tamo junto 😉👊👊👊
the fact they kept the soundtrack unaltered in the sega cd port is while a little bit dissapointing goes to show how legendary this soundtrack is, not needing a high quality remaster
I really wish you had selected axel! I wanted to hear his Van damme voice when he performs his jump kick
Beautiful 🌷🌷🌷
Classic :)
Awesome game!!
4:02 Sounds like the music that played in Space Jam when the cartoon basketball stadium is shown and the Looney Tunes start wearing their basketball uniforms. The music was an instrumental of the song "Pump Up The Jam."
ruclips.net/video/oJbOLMvKk1E/видео.html
Oh wow, I forgot about the re-recorded voices. And this is the version I grew up with.
Um grande jogo sou do Brasil e aqui jogamos muito esse jogo aliás jogo até hoje valeu
This may sound crazy, but I prefer the less clear voice overs (aka the original ones on the Mega Drive/Genesis)
I do too. They fit better.
It matches the music and sound effects better.
Same as my thoughts. They just don't fit
I wish it were the other way around (music is more clearer than the sounds)
@@Aerosplinter
That might have worked if they cleared the music and sound effects. It might be for a nostalgic reason, but I prefer the original 😊
This was my Streets of Rage back in the 1990s. Bought a Sega CD, not even knowing about this classic being included.
you made me cry
Son pocos los juegos en qué me guste el 100% de las musicas y Street of Rage es uno de ellos
best game ever
Oh, my childhood!
Ive only played this game once my whole life. SOR2 tho, ive played it about a million times lol
"OOAHH!"
It was bare knuckle ❤️
Our ps4 just be catching dust these days lmfao. Too busy playing our Sega, Gamecube, N64 etc lol.
Streets of Rage didn’t NEED a CD quality update😇 this would make it so the sound effects won’t cut off the drums tho
Street of rage
Street of rage
Street of rage
oh hey, at least they remastered the voice sfx
This version is better than genesis version. The voices sound much well.
If streets of rage 2 was on sega cd, do you think it would be better? I just noticed some of the music in the first level almost sound like the song “pump up the jam” pump it up. Lol
No there wouldn't have been any effort put into it. Also lots of developers struggled making action games of the Sega CD. The Sega version of SOR has more slowdown then the Genesis. The Golden Axe Sega CD port cut the 2P option.
The one standout game for the add-on as far as beat em ups go is FF CD. Nothing else is even close from a technical standpoint. Huge sprites minimal slowdown and 2P at once.
This is pretty much the arcade version of Streets of Rage even if the original game first came out on the Sega Genesis.
Well I just send this to the movie. So we have all in the cinema.
I wish I want to do Sesame Street: Big Bird's Hide and Speak (NES) Playthrough!
RSP Inc. (the development guru behind Win, Lose or Draw and Remote Control)'s take at Sesame Street, is no far better or worse than Rare's Sesame Street efforts.
:\
It's just the Genesis music with some voice clips?
*EDIT:* Okay, I kind of take that back. It uses cleaner samples but it sounds so similar it's hard to tell without having both games available to you.
I didn't even know there was a version for Sega CD lol
Back then I really had wished Sega had added extra content to SOR like extra characters , multi path, extra levels , and this SOR could have been SOR remix or something such a shame missed opportunity
It is on sega classics on the sega CD/mega CD
This game is about today
Yeah, the part when you call in the police cruiser to fire a rocket into a crowd reminds me of when the president wants to go to church.
A voz melhora !!!
Hopefullly streets of rage 5 has a lit soundtrack they're working on it now.
I didn't know this was a thing...What's up with the voices? Japanese version or just modded for the Sega CD for no reason?
They were just stuck in the CD version. Maybe they were trying to show off that they could use better quality samples?
BLAZE
Esse jogo é monstro
wow the music is incredible. but the character moves so sluggishly. is this the normal game code imported to sega cd? or just a sega cd issue?
This probably would not have been feasible, but Sega really needed a team on hand to make some retro sequels and remakes for the Mega CD instead of the all new titles designed to bring in the casual gamer. This version of SOR is kind of like they threw a bag of peanuts at their old school fans while they were making Filet Mignon for the masses. Weird new voices that are not better than the cartridge version is a pretty dubious upgrade...
The digitized voice samples got better than genesis version
I hope there would be a sega cd version of altered beast.
There was one on the PC Engine CD with some sweet cutscenes.
Any reason why the voices in the CD version are different to the Genesis version?
Early squad
Haha, why does this remind me of Portland? 😆
Those twin sisters are hard even if it’s on easy
My inner child is crying
👍🙂
is it just me or does 0:15 sound like the sonic mania intro
Got Adam sounding like he Chinese...Lol
In all honestly you are just better off playing the Megadrive version of this one, I find the voice samples in this quite jarring and also there is slowdown in places not present on the 16 bit cart.
Streets of Rage :
= Bare Knuckle.😉
Also on Master System, Game Gear, Megadrive, PS3, Xbox 360, Switch, PS4, Xbox One.😍😋😘
shame the new game doesn't sound as good as this one :( and my sega cd broke :(
48:55- wonder what would've happened if the player said yes?
If player said yes, he'll be sent back to the first stage (edit: Stage 6). If 2 players, one yes and the other said no, both players will fight each other.
It's kinda corny, but Mr X opens a "trap door" and you fall back down below to the construction area. Stage 6 if I remember correctly
@@Ajie03 one correction, the player would be sent to level 6.
@@natethaskate351 Yes. My mistake. You guys are correct. Player will be sent back to Stage 6.
What’s the difference between this and genesis other than the sound?
Just sound. That's all.
