To clarify some confusion, this video was made using a retail release version of the game, obtained at midnight on release day. The metrics in this video represent the day one release version of the game on Nintendo Switch.
We've had worse handheld ports, compromises so extreme they have to make an entirely different game out of it.
Just because we've had worse, doesn't make this good. And we've also had better. Switch games that run at 60 fps, look better AND run at 1080p at times as well (like Smash Ultimate). A $60 platformer being pretty much 0 effort like this is unacceptable. The Switch version misses pretty much all effects present in the other versions... which is pretty stupid. The Switch should be more than capable of running this game in 1080p at 60 fps with all of those effects turned on. It pretty much looks like a Wii game and Generations on the PS3/Xbox 360 actually looks better.
@@thenonexistinghero I actually perfer they make a unique switch version the same way 3DS and DS ports were handheld versions of their released games.
that prob wont work well today@@JsYTA
@@TroboTicTac I think an original handheld version of the game would do better than an inferior version of the same game, the likelihood of people buying two versions actually increases if the Switch version were more unique to its hardware.
@JsYTA the switch isn't that much weaker
The GBA got unique ports because like a gamecube version would be impossible on GBA
Thats why they got different ports then
Sweet. I ordered both Sonic and new Mario in Physical. I play almost always in handheld. So, definitely good news for me.
Based on some of the other early impressions ive read about, the earlier stages indeed run at an almost constant 60fps, like what was stated in this video. However, once past those initial stages, especially the stages near the end, the frame rate reportedly tanks big time due to their increasing complexity.
At this point, while I would have loved to buy and play the Switch ver, I think I'll just wait until I get a Steamdeck or Ally or Legion go and enjoy the game at higher frame rates and higher resolutions.
Steam version has denovo and forced epic games online services
I don’t understand how anyone thinks the steam deck or lenuvo is a handheld. It’s more a portable big ugly clunky pc
@@_Imagimation_ I have had no performance issues with denovou
good video, thanks for the detailed info!
One issue is when I'm playing both docked and handheld as any character in their Super form, the game starts to lag like crazy. Hopefully that's patched out in the future, as it doesn't make a good gameplay experience.
This looks and plays great. I'm okay with 720p docked as long as it's 60fps
Forces also seemed 720p/30 both handheld and docked. They just can’t be bothered to put resolution switching into their engine.
Ive seen ppl mention that Forces was rushed on Switch since they had no idea when the console was cominf out, so the game was just the PC version with everything at low
But Superstars its build in unity
A lot of switch games that run at 720p on dock mode look really good when you set your switch resolution to 720p on the settings.
Holy crap thank you so much this helped my games look amazing
Im hoping we get a Patch for a 1080p Mode while docked
In my opinion,
The Graphics aren't that bad on docked mode or handheld mode. The only graphic issues i have are
1) some textures look really cheep.
Now that, i can let of the hook since ur not going to be seeing those textures for long.
2) the comic (cel shaded) skin outline does look pretty pixelated even in docked mode. My tv is very big so with the zoom feature of switch on a big screen, i can pretty much analyze each pixel.
My solution, dont focus much on it.
What im trying to say in short is:
We need graphic settings built in the game rather than depending on the switch for a graphic improve.
3:59 Np on my end as I'm using the mclassic with the 4kgamer pro to get the best resolution when dock & its look great.😂
I own a PS5, Series S, and a Switch. I feel like this game is supposed to be played on the Switch for some reason even though the graphics aren't as crisp.
Best game to play on a boring 4 hour plane ride. I am getting it for Switch.
@@misterlexx2721one thing . Switch in handheld mode is not only for traveling . I play my switch oled in handheld mode even at home I don’t go out a lot
I feel like it would be best on something like a Steam Deck or ROG Ally (probably more so the ally since it has a 100% sRGB range)
@@le_epic Those devices are niche devices for a small group of people. They are handheld gaming PC's that cost even more than a PS5 or Xbox Series X. The makers of those devices are actually not making a profit. They are not affordable for alotta people. Most families especially working class families have at least one Switch in the house.
Oh shit, I actually really like how it looks on Switch. The sharp, un-blurred 3D backgrounds and the simpler real-time lighting especially look a lot better with this art style. As it is on Xbox and PlayStation the game's look reminds me of those ugly ass Disney and Pixar movies, how they've looked since about 2008 with this gorgeous fantastic and ultra realistic lighting and materials, but on these stylized character designs, and it makes the characters look like clay while the environments look realistic for the most part, it's super uncanny and I hate how it looks.
The frame rate even tanks at the loading screens which is super annoying considering the switch can play games like Astral Chain flawlessly lol fix your game Sonic Team
I have it on Xbox and it feels like I'm being gaslit cause the whole thing is a stuttering mess. I saw two twitch streams(for some reason there's no gameplay in youtube is that odd for AAA games that aren't fps's) that weren't in English having the same issues on their Xbox series. Apparently it's playable for them, my threshold is different cause reasons. One issue that always happens is the loading screen lag.(but it's pretty much stuttering the whole game)
In the digital foundry Xbox backwards compatibility fps boost with sonic generations video the hedgehog engine has had this issue day 1, same with Sonic Origin's plus and with many of the release bugs being the 3D island issue I think
As long it's plays on the Nintendo Switch. I'm satisfied with the game
Oh, it runs just fine, and is a good game, from what I played on my Switch. However...there is one glaring issue with this port: when exiting to the home screen in the middle of a stage while the timer goes, it leaves a flickering timer input in the upper portion of the screen. That's why I quit playing it until they can get that fixed.
Does this constitute as a 'port' though when they all released same day?
When you think about it, it kinda does 'cause you can tell a lot of the lighting, contrast and blur effects from the other versions are missing, even the shadows underneath the player models. So the devs most likely made all the assets with PC specs in mind before they had to downgrade the visuals in order to keep the stable 60fps on Switch.
This also becomes VERY apparent when you look how dark the clones are during the avatar ability tutorial or how hard they tank the framerate in pre-release footage
"One of the best performing Sonic games on Switch thus far." It's a literal simple Unity game that can run on a mobile phone.
I don't know why they're lying. This game looks terrible and doesn't particularly run too well for some reason. It wasn't optimized for Switch at all. It's especially noticeable when you look at any other full price Switch game. Forces came out 6 years ago and looks good on Switch yet is a much more demanding game.
@@broom673 It's also a terribly designed game, with awful boss fights and no soul.
@@broom673This game at least runs at 60fps on Switch, it's fine. Sonic Forces was a game developed at the same as the Switch. Sonic Team was probably trying to get used to the new console but saw something was wrong so they had to compromise the game, including dropping the framerate to 30. It's not completely their fault.
I played this on the dock and even in its 720p it's still looks good on my 65 4k TV, it's much better than Xenoblade 1 or 2 for example which are awful to look at on big TV.
Many smaller tv sizes are still 720p. Your quality could also be lowered by the cheap low end 4k tv. Samsung, Sony and LG have excellent A.I image processors to upscale all content to near 4k.
Dope
Looks fantastic on switch
I can't wait to play Sonic Superstars... When it goes on sale for 29.99. they've gone crazy if they think I'm paying $60 for a Sonic game
Same.
Pretty sure it will have a black Friday sale
I totally agree $40 yea
I agree. If it was Sonic Adventure 3 though I'd probably quickly buy it. I don't think $60 is a fair price for a 2D Sonic game though.
Throw a bunch of Sonic clones on screen and you'll see eventually some nasty frame drops...
All great, until you unlock Super Sonic and notice that the game limit the framerate to 30 anytime Super Sonic is active, even if he is not moving, what a end game bumer
it looks terrible on Switch, I played and completed the entire game on Switch, and it looks horrible, textures are extremely blurry and effects like fire are terrible, giving it a cheap look similar to Mighty No.9, not only that but sometimes I experience drops in framerate (specially using Super forms) flickering in objects and a lot of glitches
I'm not someone who's picky about graphics, I completed Frontiers, Doom and Doom Eternal on Switch, and those look great, but in this game it really negatively affected my experience with the game
Every one will get Mario wonder on the switch instead of sonic
This game looks absolutely disgusting docked. Disappointed. would've refunded if I could but sadly got it digitally.
If u run this game on switch emulator at 4k it smokes ps5 version , it looks way better with n switch emu, I did side by side and switch at 4k looks way better than ps5
Switch oled is better than that dumb emulator
@@ghosttiee9212 ohh yea can it do 8k or even 4K , 1080 if that even that is too rich for it more like 720p
At that point just play the PC version lmfao
,
everyone dose realize this video it pointless since demo and screen shots do do not determine what we get in the final game "GOLLUM" and this is sega after all.
This video was made using the final game. John went and got it at midnight. It is out today.
Why play on 4k that's just stupid
