This is the Mazda 767B, as raced in the 1989 and 1990 Sportscar World Championship. The 767B was also entered in the 1989 and 1990 Le Mans 24 hours race. In 1989 the best 767B finished 7th overal and 1st in class.

Extreme reliability absolutely could have gone for another 24hrs but terrible fuel economy these things guzzle fuel for the displacement
That's a myth mate.
In truth, it was killed by Bernie Eccleston, because apparently Group C cars were more popular for privateer teams than Formula 1 was.
If, you claim that the 26B Wankel was "Banned" from Le Mans, then you also have to claim that the Porsche Type 935 twin-turboed Flat-6, as used in the 956 and the 962 was "banned" from Le Mans.
Truth is, Group C1 cars got new regs that mandated engines be 3.5 Formula 1 style engines, and Group C2 got shut down.
It wasn't the 787B in particular, it was the Mercedes-Dauber C9 and C11, Porsche 956 and 962, and Jaguar XJR-9 that got "banned", because all of their engines weren't legal in the new regs.

@@ShadowFalcon Yes the rule changes were what killed this car but poor mileage was not myth. A rotary engine produces a combustion cycle on every crank rotation therefore twice as often as a "standard" four stroke engine layout.

Well, I doubt the Wankel in the 787B had any worse fuel economy than the engine in the Mercedes Sauber C11 (a 5 liter, twin turbo V8, running silly horsepower).
Also my point was, it wasn't the 787B specifically that was killed by the rule changes, but all the great Grp C cars.
The only one that soldiered on was actually the Porsche 962, but that got relegated to a class of its own, thanks to even more restrictive rules, (basically, they weren't allowed in FIA's WSC, but they were allowed in the Interserie championship, and therefore the ACO allowed the 962s to compete). They were privateer teams though, and couldn't compete with the works teams (Peugeot, Toyota and Mazda) running in the new 3.5 Formula Grp C.

C9 one of the greats, C11 the greatest group C racing car ever conceived. The 767b sounded great but that's about it.

This diminutive little car won the GTP class at the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, not to be confused with the 787B which won the race outright in 1991. It's tiny, almost unbearably loud, but very quick and beautiful to look at. I just love it. Seems like it beats the hell out of the driver though.

miller chassis no. it was the predecessor to the eventual 787B. It’s not like the 787B was mazda’s first attempt at this; it was an evolution, so to speak, from this car

The sound! The light flywheel combined with the notchy gearbox appears to be why the driver is blipping the throttle on the upshifts. What a track! I have driven it in the wet!

Absolute Beautiful Beast. Shows what MAZDA can do if they choose to. A MAZDA rotary hyper car. Those Rotary engines are perfection. THAT SCREAM IS SUBLIME.
Unforgettable engine. Despite its staggering consumption (80L / 100km) this car was far from being ridiculous and reached the holy grail in 1991 (her eldest sister 787b).

787B: I was lucky to win 24h of LeMans because all other favorits struggle with accidents and technical problems in the same race, in the rest of the season I did not woi a flower loosing against privat raced old Porsche 962...but the JDM fanboys hype me today not knowing that i was a unreliable slow race car with one day of great fortune

From the spectators viewpoint it looks very smooth and fluent. But in reality, when you see the cockpit view you can tell how jerky and violent it is. Like trying to balance a bowling ball on the top of a needle.

If it had sequential gearbox , it would make best V12 sound of any car (I know that it has 4 rotors , but that has same fire order as V12)
Firing order and revs are what make an engine sound great after all

I bet this is the one car you can hear when standing on the inside of spa near Pouhon. That 787b with its 4 rotors screaming near 9k rpm...I can only imagine hearing that in person...what I'd give...
