Steffen's accolades and medal record really don't reflect how good of a fencer he is. Heinzer and Kauter took most of the spotlights for the Swiss team, but without Steffen, they wouldn't be as successful as they have been in the past decade.
I think it's more simple then this - Garozzo let him too close, and not fast enough to respond to flesches. He allowed Steffen to come close enough for him to commit to flesches that are comfortable for his body height.
These are awesome videos. One suggestion: could you repeat the phrase (either in real time or slow motion) after analyzing it, so we can see how it all fits together?

I believe the flashiness of Max's fencing overshadows him. They are all great fencers.
