  • This is a high-level overview of Korea's Sangyoung Park. He is one of the most exciting epee fencers to watch and one of my personal favourites.
    Please like this video, share it, and subscribe to my channel if you'd like me to make more of these.

    First of all, I love that Epee experts are making these kinds of vids and people are watching them. This is a big advancement of the game. Would love to see more content on this peculiar fencer who seems to defy convention. I think if Svichkar from Ukraine had a better tech coach and tightened up his game about 50% he'd be an interesting comparison.

    • @LelandGuillemin
      @LelandGuillemin  4 года назад +1

      Svichkar has definitely caught my attention. He has found his groove and he has some tricky left-handed actions that create hopelessness in his opponents. You might be right that he could approach Park level.

      @@LelandGuillemin yeah I'm like the biggest svichkar fan out there, but he's so sloppy tactically and technically compared to other world class guys. Like watch his bout with Borel and you're like ok the guys a hell of an infighter and has a good classic sweep parry defense among other tools but he just makes so many little/ unnecessary mistakes and like everyone else in the world got dumb and convinced themselves that you beat Borel by attacking him.

      @LelandGuillemin  4 года назад +3

      @@adamfrank3370 He seemed to be pretty nervous vs Borel in the semi-finals. Pretty big stage against a pretty big (literally) opponent. In his match against Steffen just before he seemed so calm and poised. I'm looking forward to big things from him!

    Clear, objective, insightful, straight to the point. I wish every video analysis about fencing were like this. Can't wait for the next one. How about a female fencer? Moellhausen maybe? 😁😁😁

    • @LelandGuillemin
      @LelandGuillemin  4 года назад +7

      I'm not sure I'll dive into Women's epee soon. I have a list of content I'd like to make, but I can revisit it at a future date. Moellhausen is an amazing fencer, and I've been fortunate to train with her in St. Maur a bunch of times. Aside from her being one of the hardest working, most dedicated individuals I've ever met she is very humble and eager to improve.
      Her fencing is very risk-adverse as are most of Levavasseur's students, and she has an excellent mastery over controlling distance. If your hand is in range, it will get hit. One of the things that I find very underrated with Moellhausen is how deep her lunge is. Her lunge might be one of the most technically perfect lunges in the game. Her hand is high and her whole body hides behind her guard when her arm is extended. It is deceptively long and incredibly precise. I'll keep this in mind for the future. Cheers!

    at 4:36 he DECEIVES the opponent while he dashes to attack foot. His foot is not holding his weight briefly while he accelerates forward collapse to attack the foot but it looks like holding his body weight just like his normal forward foot.

    Thanks once again-some great stuff in there. He is such a dynamic fencer.
    For a request, as a very tall left-handed French gripper, I would love to see an analysis of this type of fencer. Obviously Grumier is great but anyone really tall?
    Lots of stuff around about how to beat tall fencers but not so much with ideas for us to use.
    Thanks again,
    Nick

      @LelandGuillemin  4 года назад +2

      As a pistol grip fencer I don't want to give you French grippers more tools to beat you with!! 😂
      Gustin might be a good fencer to analyze, I'll put him on my list. Also, I'll talk to Sam Gallagher-Pelletier and see if he'll make a French grip video for you in the meantime.

      Leland Guillemin that would be amazing-thanks!
      I live in France so watch Gustin (as well as Cannone etc) as much as possible.
      I have been watching some old Srecki matches which are great as well as a youtube lesson to Mazzoni (I think?) which is really good even though right-handed because he seems to really be posting.
      As a veteran, I try to pick up as many ideas as possible to make the most of what I have got (height/lefty) and hide all my weaknesses (slow/dodgy knees etc)😁

    after watching some Park's bouts, I vehemently agree that Park's second line parry riposte is terrifying and demoralizing, especially if he set up a feint before (which effectively makes it a second intention)

    A small lunge followed by another one (like at 3.07 and the next clip, I also see it often with his attack on the opponent's foot) - is it Park's signature move or a common technique?

      basically most parry can be used to defend or to attack.timing is the key on when you need to execute this attack or defense.
