These TV commercials for Hasbro toys' 12" G.I. Joe action figures date to 1966. Featured are the new U.S. Army G.I. Joes including a machine gunner and mountain ski troops. At :30 the Green Beret G.I. Joe with bazooka is shown. At :45 the G.I. Joe Army Jeep is shown complete with searchlight. At 1:09 the new G.I. Joe Navy dolls are shown including the deep sea diver and Sea Sled with frogman. At 2:11 the U.S. Marine Corps series of dolls are shown including a mine sweeper doll and footlocker. The Let's Go Joe game is shown at 2:45. At 3:11 the new space capsule is shown along with U.S. Air Force dolls, including a firefighter and astronaut (3:45). At 3:59 a 45 rpm record player is shown playing an accompanying record of a space launch. At 4:15, a TV commercial promotes the Action Soldiers of the World including a WWII Russian infantryman, German infantryman, Imperial Japanese infantryman, French underground fighter, Australian jungle fighter, and British commando. These dolls included custom equipment for each nation's army. At 5:11, large collections of G.I. Joe dolls are shown in diorama type settings, emphasizing the "own them all" aspect of the toys.
The G.I. Joe line of action figures was developed in 1963 by Stanley Weston, a licensing agent, who pitched the idea of a 12" military doll to Hasbro. The initial product offering in 1964 represented four of the branches of the U.S. armed forces with the Action Soldier (U.S. Army), Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Pilot (U.S. Air Force), Action Marine (U.S. Marine Corps) and later on, the Action Nurse.
Due to public dismay at the course that the Vietnam War was taking, G.I. Joe dolls eventually were distanced from the military, and a new "action" line introduced featuring adventurer and explorer dolls. These were sold under the moniker "The Adventures of G.I. Joe". By 1976, with the high price of oil influencing the cost of plastic toys, and waning interest, G.I. Joe was discontinued. It would later be revived in a smaller format. The toy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2004.

With the international GI Joes, I’ll never forget getting my Canadian Commando. My Dad was a Staff Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Artillery, and at that time they still wore the WW2 battle dress and Brodie helmets. I thought he looked just like my Dad going to work. The attention to detail was amazing.

My parents never bought me any GI Joes because dolls were for girls & tricking me into playing with dolls simply because they represented men at war was another issue they had a problem with. So i had to run next door & play with Barbie & Ken instead- teaching me the values of how to be a gold digger & a fake boyfriend. Thanks Hasbro.

I was born in 1963. GI Joe was the toy to have around 1970, along with Matchbox cars and BB guns. I dreamed about having some of the stuff portrayed in this video, however, we didn’t have the money for it. Dad did get me a GI Joe finally and it was the best thing ever ! Man it would have been so cool to have the footlocker and the Jeep ! I did get a BB gun at eight and a .22 rifle at twelve so that was cool. Right of passage in the family along with hefty firearms safety instruction. Still have that .22 after all these years !

I'm from 1963 too. I saved money for Action man - quiet the same as Gi Joe - and had 5 of them at the end. Had a lot of fun, they're all still with me, and I'm updating them, repairing, buying new stuff on fairs and design new tools and weapons for them, printing them on my 3D printers...
All that fun for so long!

Of course no GI Joe went to the moon & NASA claims to be a separate entity of the military, but when you're a kid, its those childhood memories we confuse as adults to invent wild conspiracy theories. Such as the claim we have secret moon bases. And i guess they're all run by GI Joe in someones imagination.

I sell on eBay and just bought a collection. The detail on these early figures is amazing. The spaceman has 2 working zippers and it is hard to see how they could be sewn at such a small size. It is fun to see the ads showing them going into the water and that might be why finding these in good condition is hard.

In the UK we got Action Man. As far as I can tell identical to this, but a 1/4 or less of the choice. It was expensive, but the catalogues were free, if you could find them. I spent more time playing in my head with stuff I couldn't afford than with the stuff I had; but I never even saw Aussie, British or Japanese outfits!

    • @williamhiers1280
      @williamhiers1280 2 года назад +1

There were Action Man British military figures beyond the first "Soldiers of the World" figure. Action Man at first was just rebranded G.I. Joe but after a while they started doing their own figures that were available only in the UK for British kids.

I got the army guy for my birthday when these first came out. My rank was General because I liked that name. Over a few years I got several more plus a ton of gear through trades and as presents. I think my favorite one overall aesthetically was the Navy blue crackerjacks with the white belt, Garand, and accoutrements. Very sharp looking military uniform. We had neighborhood get togethers with 4 or 5 of us playing GI Joe complete with battles. Even had a solemn burial of one tattered army GI. Weeks later, we realized we had not reterived that guy but try as we did we could not locate him. I am sure one day someone will uncover the body in the treeline behind their house. Hopefully not for another 50 years - to make it a century.

Me and my stepbrothers could've used that GI Joe with the fire extinguisher and the flame retardant suit.
We used to set our GI Joes on fire and blow bits off them with firecrackers, sometimes when they were nailed or tied to a tree. It was the mid 70s, so we were going for that whole Nam vibe.

I did the same with my brother. Firecracker landmines! We made many 1 legged vets playing. We also made parachutes and threw them off the roof of our house and from tops of trees. Yes, we were fearless boys. GREAT TIMES. Come July 4th, some unlucky Joes got a ride on a big rocket . MUCH better than video games inside.

I don’t rember those foreign infantry uniforms. I'm a bit surprised they did Japanese, Wehrmacht, and Soviet Red Army--the memory of WW2 was still very much an open wound in the 1960s, not to mention the Cold War. On the other hand, I do recall having small plastic Germans and Japanese from Marx and MPC. My Joe was strictly American, with a Green Beret, and also the Mercury capsule set. So much fun!

And look what Kenner did to GI-JOE, they turned it into a Marvel-ish Happy meal toy, so disgusting, they should have bring back the original classic back the way it was meant to be.

G.I. Joe was made by Hasbro, not Kenner.

@@PeriscopeFilm That’s what I meant, Hasbro GIJoe, I used to have the mod beard version many years ago, it was after when Kenner took over etc.

Ahhh back when toys taught you how to do things the proper way, nowadays with today's woke military it would be GI Joe in red stiletto pump heels wearing a push-up bra, and as an added bonus you get the transgender action kit 🤦

Bullshit on that one; I've got a G.I. Joe that was made in the 2000's and it's a Navy Seal frogman (my second is a female G.I. Joe doll which is a combat nurse, circa the Vietnam War.) none of these are woke in any way, and you're just exaggerating things.
