funny how hasbro started making figures in those god-awful colors to increase sales, but sales steadily declined because no one wanted yellow and orange colored figures. i wonder if any of the execs at the time look back now and think that maybe they shouldnt have made 50 versions of snake eyes and cobra commander and kept the figures to more realistic military colors?

I interviewed at Hasbro in Cincinnati in the late 90s. They asked me about what my favorite line was and why. That's exactly what I told them, all the silly mutants, space monsters and Dayglow colors needed to be buried in the dump, and the military theme should comeback. I had some concept Battle Force 2000 figure (Think Landwarrior project) and vehicles designs I submitted in my portfolio. I didn't get the job and got a lesson in the waste of money an associate degree is.

You're a terrible G.I. Joe fan, what makes a realism or a military theme elitist like you think that you can tell me I wouldn't be a real G.I. Joe fan for enjoying the Mega Marines or Star Brigade concept.
Y'know what? I'm starting to think you Military G.I. Joe elitists are just as worst as the G1 Transformers-only elitists, I'm glad my first introduction to G.I. Joe was the Sigma 6 show I use to watch on 4Kids and the 2 flawed Bay films lmao.

@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 i just looked thru all the comments to this post and not ONCE did anyone say anything about what makes a real fan. you sound triggered. do you need a safe space to go cry at? lots of people like the other "styles" of joe. i think thats dumb, since gi joe was a MILITARY toy line, not a scifi one. and we see how sales went when hasbro went that way. so my point may be proven. not 100% because we dont know if sales would have went up or not if they stayed with the main line.
either way, you're delusional. go back to your gender-neutral coloring books.

I think my favorite is that Cobra submarine - that would have been terrific (and much more satisfying than the powerful but awkward Hammerhead that we got). It's a real shame the Mauler didn't get rereleased in green.
With so many toys products considered, including some very large ambitious ones, I am surprised that there's no evidence they ever considered the Cobra transport chopper that was so ubiquitous in the comics.

Hasbro was on the fence for toy creations for a long time... I drew up a vehicle when I was 8 and it was so cool my teacher urged me to send it to them. After about a year of hearing nothing about my creation I saw it on a commercial. It was the Rolling Thunder. They completely took my idea and didn't even send me a thank you note or anything. The only difference was mines had a boxed shark face. Mines didn't have the mini drone vehicle, but everything else was exactly how I drew it. I drew it after I saw an airport crash fire truck and thought it would be cool as a military vehicle. Shame.

I can believe that. I wrote a letter to Kenner about how it would be cool if the stomach of the Tauntaun could open so you could recreate the scene from the movie. I got a letter back saying good idea, but sometimes things are just not possible. Then a few months later they come out with a Tauntaun with a slit in the belly. I grumble about it. Then one day I get a package with the new Tauntaun, and a Hoth Han and Luke, and a letter thanking me for the idea. Looking back I wish I would've kept that letter. That would've been something to include in my resume.

  • @Straun30
    @Straun30 Год назад +12

Interesting food for thought. I think what it highlights is why the line died. I think the final years were creatively bankrupt and were making things that lost the greatness of the line. Like the bad colors, the playsets that made no sense at all. I walked away from the line when they put out all this garbage. GI Joes main advantage over all other action figures was their mobility and pose ability. This was clearly being thrown away. Second, had to goet more grounded they could have revitalized the line. Kids find military awesome, more realistic military, the stuff kids were seeing in movies I think would have been awesome. Playsets that were like functional buildings rather than these bizarre abstract bases that were also vehicles and had no functionality. I mean lets be honest, almost all left mounted figures in the back wash of missile launches and completely vulnerable to enemy fire. It was just so much junk that got away from fundamentals. When they sold the 12" line with all the real world eras it did exceptionally well. Had they done sets and guys who looked like the team from predator they would have sold better. Had they went sci fy but used the template of Aliens- they would have sold better. No kid wanted a alien fighting marine who was fluorescent pink!

And the aliens should have been patterned on deadly looking ones like Predator and Alien rather than the 1950s throw offs they made. And dont get me wrong, I love retro, but it should be in its proper place, GI Joe wasnt the line for that. Had they stayed more hard core military I think it would have given new life to the line.

I grew up in a military family (Dad was enlisted crew of the Blue Angels), so everything related to the military fascinated me. GI Joe wasn't where I wanted to see monsters and whatnot.
A few years after walking away from the line, I got into playing the first Command and Conquer. In my opinion, alot of stuff from that game would have made for good GI Joe toys. The GDI Mammoth Tank, Orca attack aircraft, NOD Stealth Tank, NOD Buggy, and for a massive playset, the Temple of NOD. Hell, Kain, the leader of the Brotherhood of NOD, seemed like he belonged in Cobra already.

Ngl, I am kinda bummed that the unproduced GI Joe toy lines from the Battle Corps-to-Star Brigade and the Extreme themes weren't made since besides my 3 favorite guilty pleasures of G.I. Joe like Spy Troops,Sigma 6, and the 2 Bay movies, I actually found the Battle Corps-to-Star Brigade and Extreme G.I. Joe lines enjoyable than the original G.I. Joe that the elitists only cared for and nothing else for 3 reasons.
    1. I was always a sucker for Armored Suits,Monsters, and Mechs in my youth
    2. I have always had respect for the 90's and 2000's along with the early 2010's alot more than the 60's,70's, and 80's combined (*Deal with it, old geezer original G.I. Joe military fans who read this comment XD lol.)
    and
    3. I also always never liked the original Barbie doll-sized G.I.Joe Military theme's popularity that much to begin with except for it's Kung Fu Grip game I use to play on Monkey Bar TV back then, it's so 60's lmao.

they should have done rocky anyway not like stallone would have thrown out money (unless you count his marriage to bridgette nelson) sgt slaughter drove me away as I felt like he was yelling at me all the time
so they lost the mold to the old hq? that happen with snake eyes V2too? as he should have been reissued at some point instead of V3 and they could have bought an old one off ebay and do what mattel did with motu or maybe make it like an office playset
theres also a band named manowar and they are cooler you should give them a listen
also the other problem was no cohessive narritive between the cartoon and the comics
they also could have reissued the whale and called it the ex wife

GI Joe had a wierd aircraft, weapon that was like a small 1 man helicopter. Not quite a Cobra Fang 🚁 but it had air to air missiles, guns.

Although this video was long, it wasn't bad! However, I was disappointed with this video not spending more time on Joe-characters and vehicles both before and beyond the 1980s. For example, I would have liked to see something on Robojoe, and I thought he was going to be mentioned after the Star Brigade review. I was also disappointed with the mention of Joe-Extreme and Mayday without Sergeant Savage. My last disappointment with this video is the lack of not mentioning Atomic Man, Bullethead, and/or Garrison Kreiger.

      Ah, I remember Sgt. Savage.
I never had the toys but I did enjoy watching that VHS Adventure of him and his Screaming Eagles that I thought was cool on YT tho' lol.
Too bad that the G.I. Joe fandom however who's stuck on either the 60's or 80's never had the appreciation of it as I did with both Sgt. Savage and G.I. Joe Extreme since I'm a half 90's half 2000's kid after all lol.

@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 , do you know that Sergeant Savage is Hasbro's version of Marvel's Captain America? In comics, Savage was put into stasis during WWII. After he was released in the present, he fought alongside the Joes plus UK's Action Man. The only thing I'm unsure of, is if Savage has abilities like Marvel's Captain America.

@@seanholmes7482 I mean, I usually grew up with Hulk,Spider-Man, and Wolverine more than Captain America but yeah I suppose so but I wasn't upset over that because tbh I think I prefer Sgt. Savage over him anyday XD lol.

@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 , does it baffle you why out of all the Joes Paramount and Hasbro select to make movies out of, this guy Savage is always left out of it? Also, do you know about Joe-characters like Atomic Man, Bulletman, Kreiger Garrison, and Robojoe?

The armored transport is the only decent thing there. Much of the concept art looks far superior to what became inferior products, or they were simply just inferior designs to begin with that just stayed inferior. Plus 90% look like third party toy lines, which Hasbro was purchasing at the end of ARAHs run.

I don't know how Bench press's G.I.Joe would've been, but since Larry was involved, it would've been far bettter than Devils dues catastrophie of a comic book run! Those f**kers had the liscense, and we let them have it, shame!
