Exactly this. Poor management of resources. One of the advantages of having a rookie QB is that you only have to pay them a paltry sum of money (as a % of the cap) for the first 3 years of their careers. In the first 3 years of Penix's career they will not be able to take advantage of how little he is earning given that Kirk will have a $25M dead cap hit 3 years from now.

Well when you look at a deal. Kirk Cousins contract is only for about 100 million guaranteed, and realistically for two years. Which means assuming Kirk Cousins stays healthy and wins a minimum of ten games the Falcons would be needing a quarterback as a backup in two years, but their drafting position in the first round would be something like 22 to 26 in the first round draft. At that pick you not going get good 1st round quarterback, and you will overpay for a bad second round quarterback.

Dan said the Falcons had the 11th best defense as if that’s really good and can’t possibly be improved on. Imagine if you draft an impact defender and that becomes a top 10 defense, and you’ve got Cousins to spread the ball out to the weapons you already drafted. That would be a logical strategy.

No look at Kirk Cousins contract, his guaranteed money is only for two years. Which means means you only have a two year contract. This forces the owner and GM to start looking for a college quarterback in two years. But assuming that Kirk Cousins stay healthy and wins 10 games each season in a weak AFC South division the Atlanta Falcons would be drafting in the 22 to 26 position of the first around draft. That position will not get you a top 1st round draft pick at quarterback coming out of college. You would have to overdraft a bad 2nd round draft pick in the late 1st round, and hope he can be a starter for you in Atlanta.

Plus, 72% of the teams last year were forced to play their backup QB bc of an injury or poor play...and with Kirk coming off a complete achilles tear, it's smart to have a quality backup...why did they give Kirk that money? Cause they do believe he can carry this team to the playoffs...why did they draft Penix? Bc they are likely not going to have another 1st round pick for the next 2-3 years bc of the tampering, rn is their best chance to get a QB.

So did Dan, multiple times. I think my favorite was when he brought up Jordan Love as if that proves he was right, when in fact the Packers didn’t win a Super Bowl after that, which means it was a failure if your goal is to win a Super Bowl. He also said QBs play longer which means Penix could be sitting longer, and he said drafting defense in rounds 2-4 was a good move but drafting defense in round 1 wouldn’t have been? This pick makes no sense which is why no one can make sense of it.

@@erikdayne5429 Wrong, It's a fact that no player at 8 puts them over the edge, they don't get to the Superbowl this year no matter who they could have picked. It's also a fact that Pitts, London and Bijan are all 22 years old and have not had a good QB to take them to the next level. Another fact, Kirk will do that for them just in time for Penix to take over in 2 years. The final fact is that this move is for the FUTURE not this upcoming season, you and 70% of this comment section seem to think that this next year is the final NFL season and the Falcons ruined their last chance to win.
I'm also not a Falcons fan, could care less what they do as a franchise, just find it amusing how confidently asinine people can be with their opinions when it comes to something they don't understand.

It might have worked with Love, but they wasted the last couple years with Rodgers because you didn’t go all in with him. Maybe getting Rodgers weapons would’ve taken that team over the top.
