keep in mind: this is only the first part in a series that will go on to have a handful of videos in it!
what groups do you want to see in part 2?
p.s. - the groups in this video were taken from the community post, and of course young posse will remain #1 for a while (unless they stop doing this trend of never repeating genres) but i wanted to get part 1 out and use the comments on here to see what groups i should include in the 2nd part :)
nct! (all units)
SHINee!
Billlie!!!!
nct, skz and shinee
Treasure are pretty diverse. If ppl bothered to get into their discography
I instantly thought of dreamcatcher and gidle
Yesss!!! My all time favourite group (G)I-DLE is on the list❤ Great video!
I wonder how much diversity Shinee has
Yea, I thought they will include SHINee in it, as known for experimental group ever
I think because shinee has so many songs, that alot of the genres are used again and again. So the genres arent quite diverse-- and theyre doing mostly contemp. pop or some rnb or electro music.
I think its harder for older groups to constantly do new genres everytime they comeback. Imagine 100+songs that is unique. The fanbase won't be able keep up/vibing because of the constant (image/concept) change.
-Its easier for new groups to show their potential and adaptability and diverse genres, esp since this generation of kpop has been reached and influenced more by western music and has a wider catalogue of genres compared to pre 4th gen.
Rather than shinee, im surprised nct wasnt here 😂
sorry for not replying sooner - shinee are one of my ults and i was going to include them, but i started with their discography and their early songs (starting with debut and only ending around misconceptions era) are almost entirely 3 genres - contemporary r&b, electroclash and electropop. this not only was gonna hurt their numbers and look a little sad for me as a hardcore shawol but also its a super tedious task. i have their recent albums in my masterlist (story of light thru hard eras) and those are definitely more diverse, so i would love to at least include them in pt2 to showcase their diversity in later releases!
plus, they have some genres that are super uncommon and those would be cool to mention, i.e. cøde being trouse!
Tbh not that diverse
DREAMCATCHER MENTIONED !!! great video
@@thatshrianI’m screenshotting this

Yeah, but the genres are mostly wrong though
dreamcatcher also got jazz genre in a few songs, (rainy day, jazz bar, for (yoohyeon))
EVERGLOW for the part 2 !
When I immediately saw the title my mind was screaming ✨ Red Velvet ✨ The discography 👑💖
OMFG FUCK YEAH YOUNG POSSE!!!!!
Billlie also should be included in this conversation, as they have a very diverse discography but no one ever talks about them 😢
Yes it would be awesome to see a video JUST about Billlie's discog diversity!
The channel “momosunrise” is a big Billlie fan! Right now, she seems to be concentrating more on XG but it was because of her “guide to Billlie” video that I became interested in the group. 🙏🎃👻
Seconding this hard.
Yesss I came to comment this!!
Was just about to say this. I think Billlie is indeed in top5
SKZ was the first group I thought of when reading the title tbh
Honestly it's MAMAMOO that has they have every genre songs
From rock to jazz
From Latin to Arabic influences , hip hop , trap , R&B , ballads, jack swing , house
Agree!!!
beat me to it🙃 btw please stream a memory for life it’s so good

Bro txt being in top 3 is actually soooooo true💙proud moa
i understand where youre coming from but at the same time i dont really think a group is that diverse if their different genres are all mostly subgenres of the same genre
exactly thats what i thought
💯💯💯
SO DAMN PROUD OF YOUNG POSSE!!! They deserve more recognition. I hope they get more successful in future! Also proud of TXT's discography as well
older groups like Super Junior, Girls' Generation and Brown Eyed Girls would be interesting to look at, overall amazing video and I can see all the work you put into it!
thank you!! i agree, i especially wanna do BEG their discography is amazing :D
@taemteez Indeed!! Most of their albums have a distinct sound and concept
Great video! The only point you missed is this: to make a fair analysis you should've compare only groups with similar discography lenght. Groups that just debuted (like Aespa or any 4th to 5th gen group, for exemple) will appear to have more diversity than older groups when in reallity they don't have that much diversity at all. (No hate guys, but when we are working with statistics we need to compare in a fair way or the data will "say" something that is not true.). This might happen because of 1 of 2 reasons:
1) Groups that consciously made/make a lot of "experimentations" but doesn't have a extense discography; OR
2) Companies that monitor the market to know what music style is trending in order to make their groups to explore those style to "win the market" right away everytime they lauch something ( that was practiced more carefully from 1st to 3rd gen groups cause they focused on their own "style" and on domestic public only most of the time now become almost the norm for 4th and 5th gen groups in order to conquer globa market share).
Exemple of a fair comparison: Lesserafim x Loona - if you count both Solos, subunits and the group (if I'm not mistaken both groups has around 30~32 songs +/-) both groups are know for experiment a lot with their song. This will make the analysis more fair.
true!! thank you for the suggestion!! will definitely utilize this in coming videos
I knew gidle had one of the most diverse choreographies,
but 60%??? damnnn... thats pretty good honestly. thats actually very impressive.
Especially considering they have already released over 100 songs by now.
if you do a part 2 you should definitely do an analysis of
shinee

ive and kiof respectfully how?
Gwsn for sure omg yes 😭
@@winniejung imo maybe not kiof, but IVE hasn't made a single thing similar to their prior release; the middle eastern sound of Eleven, the anti drop electro minimalistic Love Dive, the gay anthem disco sample of After LIKE; girl crush with Kitsch, the ballad Either Way, Baddie specially; Heya and Accendio don't have anything to do with each other, and same for I Am.
They got their identity, but their titles are VERY versatile in sound imo
@@chromaticasforecast4419 I can see it now I guess it's because I listen to their music in albums and their albums are very cohesive so they I just thought they sounded similar ifykwim
@@winniejung I mean, I get what you're saying but I'd disagree to an extent; the album is COHERENT more than cohesive, bc I think each of their projects are rich in variety. Cherish, Blue Blood, Kitsch, I Am, Shine With Me, Hypnosis and Lips are SO different.
I've MINE it's the titles bringing in the diversity, but even their latest is proof as well.
The common denominator aside from their talent and concept is the AMAZING MUSIC lol
When I saw the title i immediately thought of Straykids, so if you make a part 2 you should definitely include them
Where is my NCT? Almost all units could be in..👀 And I think Seventeen could be too

nct genuinely takes the cake cus its not only the units that are different from each other, but within each unit they cover SOOO many genres its crazy
Red Velvet, next.
i think this put into perspective just how much alternative r&b i like
If you like alt R&B in kpop you might like SZA's debut album or some of FKA Twigs earlier songs (two weeks and video girl specifically remind me of Underwater by Red Velvet)
ofc txt should be one of the leading groups when it comes to diverse discography 😎 btw after watching this I am kinda getting interested to check out young posse!
Immediately thought of txt
genres/songs
I think that math favors newer groups or groups with a small discography. For example, a group with only 4 songs in 2 genres would be 50%?
Probably adding a factor of songs per genre would help but I do understand that would make the calculations more complex
Actually a lot of songs are missing so it doesn't even matter 😅
exactly it makes no sense. this + them categorising all the subgenres into one broad main genre makes this video highly inaccurate. (for eg categorising dreampop and synthpoppop songs, which sound completely different into one main genre pop). how are u putting a group like red velvet, that has done 75+ genres over 100~ songs below a group that barely has 13 songs out 😭 make it make sense 😂
@@adelinedelacroix6608 yeah, I also feel there was heavy emphasis on hip hop sub genres in the analysis. To be fair though, these subgenre analysis on groups like Twice and Red Velvet truly is a daunting task. Like hours of your life gone 😆
I was gonna mention tripleS in the community post but I didn't think it was "diverse" enough. Boy was I wrong lol. Thank you for putting them on the list 😊
🗣️: So... What's your fav genre?
Me: Rage
THANKYOUUU SM FOR INCLUDING ITZY
i'd like to see skz, mamamoo, nmixx, bts and xg (not kpop but still) bc tbh i feel like their discography is insanely diverse
BTS
As a loona, young posse, and tripleS fan I can safely say my favorite artists have some hits
Omg i knew le sserafim would be here, what i love about le sserafim is how none of their songs sound the same but they still stick to a concept
Hi, what about MAMAMOO and Purple Kiss
Ofc EXO
Idk what the process of analysis was but I wondered how you would categorised songs like Savage by aespa which have a lot of mix of genres. Did you consider all the genres. A lot of kpop songs actually have a mix of genres and don't necessarily always stick to one specific genre to begin with. It would be cool to actually make a video on how you analysed this. Personally I think this would be a fun idea for a video .
y'all are sleeping on skz... they have one of the most diverse discographies in all of kpop and in every album there's at least 4 different genres. plus they have some really unique genres, like psytrance with side effects.
exactly i listen to some of the songs and i go like this can't be skz
my exact thoughts 😭
And txt is on the list like what a joke
literally
loona queens keep on extending their diversity specially with dall having bossa-nova like sound, candy crush/plastic candy being city-pop like and Loop being house like

i love songs like piano man, words dont come easy, i miss you
theyre just tew good
@gelesic6757 their discography truly embodies their jazzy and confident concept up until Purple album. And even though I didn't listen their b-sides from what era yet, I still stand with the fact, what their discography is truly a masterpiece from the very start.
@@gelesic6757 oh my god words don’t come easy especially, as well as a memory for life, and piano man may just be their best songs and I’m glad someone else loves them too😍
Imagine the amount of diversity tripleS will have in a few years💀
I was a bit surprised seeing Dreamcatcher at 10, but I think for a group whose main niche is rock, they are super diverse. If I’m not mistaken, they blend genres quite a lot, like for example Diamond is moombahton and rock.
I really recommend people to listen to stray kids Full discography if you didn't. Stray kids is have most diverse and unique music discography. They have like 50+ genres in their discography search
I can't believe you didn't include the reggaeton banger that is antifragile
TRUEEEE its so funny how kpop loved reggaeton for like 5 minutes and now there are barely any reggaeton songs coming out, antifragile is rly that girl
so what kind of music do you listen to? oh pretty much solely romanian popcorn, what about you?
What is Romanian popcorn
What Is "Will I ever see you again" genre by Red Velvet ?
progressive house!
@taemteez thanks!
if you ever think about doing a number 2 you should try billlie!
I love this, but also some of these genres are insane 😂 I feel like there has to some middle between "it's all just kpop, the genre is pop" and this, but I don't know where that line should be drawn, and I know for certain that wherever it is drawn, there will be disagreement. In this video, some broad categories of music seemed to have a lot more fine-tuned categories than others. It's so complicated...
I'm pretty sure many of these genres probably come from Everynoise, which uses AI to map genres and create names. But what ends up happening is regional differences get created where there isn't a difference in sound, entire genres are made for one artist, and female artists are given different labels than male artists. Like, female artists get "bubblegrunge" instead of grunge, "trap queen" instead of rap, "country dawn" instead of country. It does this with gender, race, country, region, city - everything. It's AI, and it takes the slop we put in and produces slop (not that all the genres it produces are slop, but they have the racist and sexist biases we fed into it).
I got more into this as I went on and did research into it. If anyone is interested I recommend reading "The Mediation of Gender, Identity, and Difference in Contemporary (Popular) Music Streaming", if you can manage academic writing, since this stuff is dense and ngl I haven't finished. It's upper division social sciences college homework stuff. good luck
thank you for the long comment! first of all, absolutely zero of these genres come from everynoise (i can't stand that website lol, ai can be such a disease sometimes) - id say 90% are from wikipedia and the other 10% are from rateyourmusic, which are both limiting yet vast methods of categorizing music genres. i've been very interested in genres for a little over 4 years now and i can't exactly describe how to draw the line but there definitely IS a line - for example, to differentiate between midi and chiptune is a bit silly... i would also say anything with more than 2 words in the name of the genre (save for the two prog house subgenres, deep & festival, and anything with drum n bass in the name) is kind of a stretch. if the genre is called "neoclassical darkstep garage" i probably don't care and i'm just gonna classify it as 2-step or altpop LMAO
also, thank you for bringing that writing up!! and i will definitely give it a read; finding out about the era of "putting urban in front of the name of a genre to denote it was made by black people" made me so aware of the actual racist and sexist stereotypes that tend to stem from earlier music genres. i'd say the only gendered music genre that makes sense at all is diva house - which is awesome because it is mostly about empowering women and originated in the 80s when womens rights were a (somehow) controversial topic.
tldr, thank you for the comment, screw everynoise, and i will definitely give that a read cuz it sounds interesting
@@taemteez That's so awesome that it's not everynoise!!!! I'm so pleased. I really respect that you really put a lot of thought into it! To be honest, I don't know how I would even approach the problem of categorizing music. I just get overwhelmed entirely. I know there's all these issues, and I know that the divisions are complicated and fuzzy, and that just makes my brain shut down. The fact that you were able to see through some of the bs out there and create a system that works and specifically suits you is incredible. That's the kind of careful, calculated human intuition that should be present when making these decisions.
Anyway, thanks for replying and great video!

My favorite discography in all of kpop is definitely BTS, it's simply diverse and very well done... I love it!
f(x) - Queens of Kpop discography. Without f(x) these groups never exist.
true!! f(x) are great
Saying a group with 17 different sub-genres of Electronic music is more diverse than a group that has produced music under every major genre, is just silly. 😂
Giving equal weight to sub-genres is far too granular. A truer test would be to start with the major genres, then if you wanted to pit each of those against one another, I could see that being interesting and much more of an actual portrayal of diversity.

thank you for the great video!! looking forward to the next part as i've been interested in trying to differentiate genres in kpop and i'm learning a bit from your videos :D do you have tips on how to be more familiar with genres?
of course! when i started out, i watched mostly kpop stuffs channel as they were the only youtuber i knew that was doing stuff like that, and equating genres to familiar songs is always helpful. i will ALWAYS recommend taking into account songs that sound familiar and are the same genre, maybe even writing them down in a google doc or sheet or something? you can use text color to indicate whether its just a guess, or youre pretty sure, or youre 100% certain about the genre, and practice makes perfect! its all about tuning your ear to get to know what each genre's defining characteristics are.
for starters, you could go thru every prominent house genre and try to identify which of the genres a house song falls under. also a huge tip: define genres in your own terms!!! for example, hyphy is defined as "hip-hop with an energetic, up-tempo beat" but thats so vague so i remember it by the "pungent" bass and the "clicky" snares which, if i described it like that to someone else they would get a good gist of the genre. so maybe it's helpful to also have a section where you define genres??? IDK it really all depends how much you enjoy genre specification and how much time you want to put into it :D
I like to watch your videos and look foward to find new songs to add to my playlist, thanxx🧡
You made this video in one week?! This is absolutely amazing!
