keep in mind: this is only the first part in a series that will go on to have a handful of videos in it! what groups do you want to see in part 2? p.s. - the groups in this video were taken from the community post, and of course young posse will remain #1 for a while (unless they stop doing this trend of never repeating genres) but i wanted to get part 1 out and use the comments on here to see what groups i should include in the 2nd part :)
I think because shinee has so many songs, that alot of the genres are used again and again. So the genres arent quite diverse And theyre doing mostly contemp. pop or some rnb or electro music. I think its harder for older groups to constantly do new genres everytime they comeback. Imagine 100+songs that is unique. The fanbase won't be able keep vibing and stay because of the constant change. Easier for new groups to show their potential and adaptability, esp since this generation of kpop has been reached more and influenced more by western music.
sorry for not replying sooner - shinee are one of my ults and i was going to include them, but i started with their discography and their early songs (starting with debut and only ending around misconceptions era) are almost entirely 3 genres - contemporary r&b, electroclash and electropop. this not only was gonna hurt their numbers and look a little sad for me as a hardcore shawol but also its a super tedious task. i have their recent albums in my masterlist (story of light thru hard eras) and those are definitely more diverse, so i would love to at least include them in pt2 to showcase their diversity in later releases! plus, they have some genres that are super uncommon and those would be cool to mention, i.e. cøde being trouse!
Honestly it's MAMAMOO that has they have every genre songs From rock to jazz From Latin to Arabic influences , hip hop , trap , R&B , ballads, jack swing , house

If you like alt R&B in kpop you might like SZA's debut album or some of FKA Twigs earlier songs (two weeks and video girl specifically remind me of Underwater by Red Velvet)
I was a bit surprised seeing Dreamcatcher at 10, but I think for a group whose main niche is rock, they are super diverse. If I’m not mistaken, they blend genres quite a lot, like for example Diamond is moombahton and rock.
@gelesic6757 their discography truly embodies their jazzy and confident concept up until Purple album. And even though I didn't listen their b-sides from what era yet, I still stand with the fact, what their discography is truly a masterpiece from the very start.
Idk what the process of analysis was but I wondered how you would categorised songs like Savage by aespa which have a lot of mix of genres. Did you consider all the genres. A lot of kpop songs actually have a mix of genres and don't necessarily always stick to one specific genre to begin with. It would be cool to actually make a video on how you analysed this. Personally I think this would be a fun idea for a video .

I genuinely love young posse so much just for having a gta concept, even if it’s not the type of music i listen to regularly :D that game was my whole childhood (honestly shouldn’t have lel) i still remember playing it on my friends ps2
Of course the experimental siblings F(x) and Shinee>>>>> The blueprints, they introduced a lot of instrumental and genres like acoustic guitars, city pop, EDM, dubstep, doo wop, rock ballad, xylophone and many more.
It’s crazy cause all the groups i Stan are here. (I only Stan properly like 5 groups but I listen to like everyone) so I guess that means I just like genre exploration 😭😭😭
Young posse is a pleasant surprise! I love most of their songs so much despite the different genres. They just have this signature sound that just works so well
Definitely check out Mamamoo they have a lot of different songs, if you include their solo and subunit work it's even more. Jazz, hiphop, Rock, ballads, Funk, raggaeton, rnb, Latin, blues,... Their isn't much they haven't tried

The rule to count the diversity isn't the best. What with for example Twice? They have hundreds of songs, so they need hundreds of genres to have good diversity? 😅
i definitely agree! but its hard to quantify genre diversity without this sort of formula, and it's been used to quantify diversity for as long as i can remember
I was not expecting that no. 1 but they are so far quite unique as a group bridging kpop with khiphop quite well even with collabs that were unexpected.
