New! RAY DAVIES compilation coming out August 11th on Jem Records! See link here! This is going to be Epic! propermusic.com/products/variousartists-jemrecordscelebratesraydavies
Love the Kinks! I started out with just 2 albums; the Kinks Greatest Hits from Rhino and Lola vs the Powerman and The Merry go round and that was it for many years until I heard Face To Face and that was a reawakening and then I moved on to Something Else (my favorite Kinks album), Village Green, Arthur and Muswell Hillbillies which are all amazing albums. Better late than never. Thanks Matt!
Hey Matt! I grew up with the hits, but the first album I bought was Sleepwalker, and I liked everything after that. And then in 2010 I decided to buy the book; The Kinks: All Day and All of the Night: Day by Day Concerts, Recordings, and Broadcasts, 1961-1996. If I'm reading about a band, I like to own their entire discography. I'm glad I did because I had been depriving myself for years. Thanks for the heads up on this!
Great Steve! I had the Greatest Hits first, but Sleepwalker was my first purchase with my own money! Great band, wide ranging and diverse catalog. There's something for everyone with The Kinks! Cheers Matt
Matt, great video, I have to get this set, very interesting, I have to listen to them , the memories fantastic, I wanted to mention Matt, I purchased The Sorrows Album, I like this one, it is great, Thank You Matt, TakeCare,BeSafe, enjoy the Kinks album, can’t wait to get mine, Steve
The Kinks are my second favourite British group. The Kinks released some fantastic singles from 1964-70. Ray Davies I feel is a vastly underrated songwriter, who is in my top ten. Several singles have very good B-sides.
Great video! Love the Kinks got into the around 1977 Low budget Album. I am going to pick it up on vinyl I don’t have much of the RCA years ! My favorite is The Hard Way! Have fun planning the cd’s Matt🎸🎸🎸
@@matthewstreet1961 Absolutely Matt! It was great to see them up close "Rockin' The House"! And, finally meeting all of the guys in the band! Wish I was able to get a picture of you and I, with all of The Midnight Callers..Hopefully next time! 🍻 Allan
I preordered my cd from the Kinks website so I'm still waiting for it to be delivered. My first Kinks lp was a hits comp put out on the Ronco label in the 70's. Played it endlessly. Favorite albums are Village Green from the 60's and Low Budget from the 70's/80's. Saw them in concert a couple of times in the 80's.
I bought the high res version and it's a great compilation! What works surprisingly is the fact it's not chronological and they have divided the songs into four themed sections which is a great idea.
This looks like a nice compilation. I don't know that it beats Kinks Kronicles which was a wonderful 2 record or 2 CD set. The 1966-72 period is prime Kinks for me. I've been buying all the deluxe box set reissues as they come out. This one is for more casual fans. Nice package though (that's what she said).
So this one spans a long era. I would've thought it would have been up to Lola or so. My favorite era personally is anything from Something Else to Muswell Hillbillies. It seemed Ray Davies was on a roll. Dave had the licks. Peter Quaife was missed when he left before Arthur. Mick Avory was a solid drummer. Though most of the songwriting was Ray's, the Kinks were a team.
I spent my last weekend listening to this lovely new Kinks album. Great musical experience, tasteful compiled and garnered with insightful linernotes. In my opinion the most satisfying compilation on The Kinks on the market. Thanks for this video, I share your enthusiasm on this 100%!
Really enjoyed this video. I am a lifelong Kinks fan as well. My dad bought me that Greatest Hits LP at a shopping mall in Des Moines. I have to disagree with you however. I believe the early releases up to Muswell Hillbillies were the real cream of the crop when it comes to the band, Nevertheless, I own every Kinks LP ever released and have enjoyed them all with my favorite being Arthur. Keep up the good work!
Hey Matt! LONG time Kinks fanatic here. I have all the albums and reissues, solo albums, Ray's three books, Return to Waterloo on video, etc, etc. If Ray is not a songwriting genius, then the term has no meaning. And brother Dave invented the garage rock lead guitar sound. Saw them on the Phobia tour! And while I agree that their 60th anniversary is cause for celebration, for me the problem is they have been inactive as a group for the last 29 years. And during that time we've had tons of deluxe and super deluxe reissues, box sets, and compilations - most of them have been done extremely well. The Picture Book and BBC boxes were amazing. The SDEs (aside from the most recent one) all offered something fresh. But after all of that, there just isn't much they could put out at this point that would excite me. Okay, they're giving us two thematic collections with staggered release dates and commentary from Ray, Dave, and Mick. And they're trying to replace some of the more frequently recycled hits with lesser known tracks. Fine, but some of these selections are real head-scratchers. I think this is great for the casual or new fan. But for the old diehards who were hoping for something really different or new - like a few reunion tracks - this falls short. And the less said about the cover art, the better. For all of you who are enjoying this set, don't let me rain on your parade. This is just my 1.417 cents (adjusted for inflation). Cheers!
Hi Alan, and welcome to my channel so happy you're here! You know I was thinking about it and reading your post a few times and I can't disagree with you. I too have been waiting a long time for some possible new material from the band. They are one of my favorite bands of all time and I am disappointed that it's been so long since they attempted anything new. I realize Dave was sick for a while. But he has recovered and they could be doing so much more to make this 60th anniversary that much more special. I loved your post and I thought up you brought up some fine points and insights. All the best you and take care, Matt

Yes, The Kinks are one of the best bands ever. I dug them since the Beatles, they were on the am radio back in the hey day. They stood out over bands, they rocked hard in those days. Looks interesting Matt, now vinyl or cd?......🍁
Hi Matt! I have all of those Kinks albums from the 60s on CD. I even reordered special editions of face-to-face something else by The Kinks and actually by coincidence ordered the debut album special edition yesterday. The main reason being that the sound quality on them is superior to the ones on the original single CDs. Could you post a review when you have the time on the sound quality of this CD? I wouldn't mind shelling out money for it if the sound was more improved then on my single CDs which were probably pressed in the 90s or late 80s. I know that the sound quality on the special editions is improved. Thanks!
Yes, me too Joe. Maybe on part 2? Are you going to be getting the new Ray Davies compilation? See link. propermusic.com/products/variousartists-jemrecordscelebratesraydavies
Hell yeah Mike! Give The Kinks a shot. They have such a wide-ranging and diverse catalog that I am 100% sure you will find some of their albums to your liking. Maybe not everything, but definitely there is stuff you'll love. Take care. Cheers Matt
Hey Matt, I have more Kinks hits collections than many people have albums. They are certainly in my top 3 bands of all time. I hope more than a few folks pick this up. Take care...
They are my # 4 BI band. Sounds like it's worth buying for the book and b-sides alone! If you ever get a chance check out there live at the BBC collection!
Nice job on this new compilation review, Matt. 👍 Your entry into The Kinks was the same as mine and at about the same age. This new comp looks good and getting the band's comments, love it. There was another excellent 2-cd release in 2014 that had an amazing track list AND excellent sound. "THE ESSENTIAL KINKS": (2014/Sony) 48 tracks 2-CD Jewelbox. Billed as: "The definitive carreer-spanning collection, personally selected by Ray Davies. New liner notes and testimonials, plus vintage photos and more." Worth seeking out as well. I have actually gone back and collected the original albums (on cd). Take care and thanks for another informative review.
@@MickBokulich-gg1ro I would just have left off Don't and Babies for b sides. Otherwise, the album is superlative. Word of Mouth, Low Budget and Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround are the only others that approach its greatness.
Does this mean that Ray and Dave aren't going to do a Kinks' farewell tour? Remember when they were talking about that before the world drastically changed 3-and-a-half years ago? ... :(
Hi Mike, it doesn't specifically say anywhere I can find that it's remastered. But I imagine it's from the remastered series that has been released already. Because these tracks sound great. Cheers Matt
I’m 72, and with you. Loved the Kinks since I picked up their first album in 1964 when I was 14. However, they fell out of favor with me from their Preservation Rock Opera period in the early 70s onwards.
Yeah! That's great? I will check them out. I always liked the kinks. The only problem is that they are having the same problem as Paul McCartney . Their voice's are are going out?, But still I like that they did some updated versions of their old songs. Lola is one of my favorites. Come dancing? I think from the 1990's is okay? So anyway? Thanks for the info.
This is okay. But, if you're really serious about The Kinks, it's better to go with their original albums from 1964 - 1972, with added CD bonus tracks. The Kinks' albums from 1966 - 1971 are especially good. Right up there with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Bob Dylan.
Dose the world need another MONO rehash of the classic stuff. WHERE are the STEREO studio tapes. I wouldn't waste any money on yet another MONO master.
