Developer Team Ninja returns once more with its excellent combat design - this time taking its in-house engine to the open road. Rise of the Ronin presents a huge landscape to freely explore, all built to suit PS5 as a sole platform target. However even with the dedicated PS5 development, the game's frame-rate has issues on all three of its modes - as Tom covers in detail.

Whoa 900p for a PS5 only title? That's taking nostalgia a little too far 😭
Ryse has entered the chat
PS5 is too weak these days. even 60fps feels like shit after experiencing 144hz on pc.
But a non Sony studio.
@@susangzryse is og xbox one game duh, that still looks good tier
900p Thats good these days, alot of aaa games are now 720p.
Sub 1080p on a PS5 exclusive in 2024 is absolutely pathetic
Bullshit. Its upsampling. Ps5 pro games that will have min native res about 1080p you also will say its 1080 or you say its 4k with upsampling? Native res is useless.
@@user-qg7oq6qw5cthe most funny part that it is 900p after upscaling already
they should port this game to the ps3 while theyre at it
@@randyrrs7028 they are incompetent to do so. Real Sony's internal studio probably could port it to PS3
If you think a ps5 can run 4k native then you should really do some more research😂
Polished games are getting rare.
That will happen as games get more and more technically complex
Honestly, we should just mentally add 2 years to every release.
@@jackkenny4194What is complex about this game? Or even Dragon’s Dogma 2? You fanboys will say anything. Lol

I remember Demons Souls looking so beautiful at the launch of ps5
Well the level architecture were originally designed with the ps3 in mind. Even with the graphics update, it's not going to compare at all to a open world game.
It's 3D audio and good use of Dual Sense too.
Hell even more relevant NiOh2 is better looking with better performance
Clearly in need of a 120Hz, 40FPS mode.
I’m the correcting Nerd guy so here I go (pushes glasses up the bridge of his nose); Um actually it’s a 120hz/40fps mode🤓

@@radry100This game can be made pretty accessible on its lowest difficulty. Heard a lot of people who don’t like hard games are really enjoying that.
I always felt like Nioh was a huge downgrade from even Dark Souls 2. Really bland level design and cheapo bosses.
@@Dogsineedits better than all dark souls and demon souls in terms of gameplay design is totally different because its not a souls game its a ninja gaiden if you can understand
@@DogsineedCheapo bosses? They're orders of magnitudes better than anything From Software has ever managed to make.
900P for unstable 60 FPS? This generation has been a major disappointment.
Its not 900p. Its upsampling.
@user-qg7oq6qw5c They said it in the video my guy. It drops lower actually, but the presenter stated performance spends most of it time around 900P. Upsample or not, it's 900P.
Team Ninja's games always had a problem with resolution. The frame rate was good for Nioh and Wo Long. Felt like a perfect 60 fps. Rise Of The Ronin's frame rate is terrible.
This gen is well disappointing, consoles struggling no way they can do any game with 4K native at 60fps then there’s raytracing which it simply doesn’t have the power to do
And the game doesn't look impressive at all.
1:44 Not just that it's 4 years later, it's also the fact that it was originally a PS4 game.
13:47 Btw, the ray-tracing chapters should start here in the viewfinder, but it's much later for some reason.
Ghost of Tsushima was Triple-AAA game, which have more budget (to spend more $$$ on optimizing & polishing)
Also, they used much stronger optimizations since PS4 console was weak at that time, so they done super high optemzations
While in Rise of the Ronin, it's AA game & they did meh optemzations since they rely heavily on stronger PS5 hardware
But overall, any Samurai game is welcome, might improve a little bit with updates (only time will tell)
They really need to upgrade their engine. Definitely isn't ideal for open world, as they've been able to hit 4k60fps on older Nioh titles. That being said, with a VRR tv, this runs super smooth for me and is an absolute blast to play.
Didn't they make Wo Long as well? That game looked pretty good to me.
@@rabbyd542 they sure did. That looked great as well but wasn't open world.
@@benchandler7007 I had a pretty great time playing that with my friends.
I just finished it and it was a good game but damn it looks bad with awful pop in and not so good graphics. Their engine is ASS!!
Ps4 nioh 2 had checkerboard, not true 4k and still nowhere near locked 60fps.
Ps5 mode is 1800p
PS5 4k mode isn't a locked 4k, it drops into the 1900's quite often
Ps5 120fps mode is at 1080p and doesn't hold 120fps at all.
Nioh games dont actually perform as well as you're remembering
It’s crazy the level of optimization and performance first party vs third party get out of the consoles. I know team ninja is essentially AA and have like a 2-3 year turnaround for games, so that adds context. But still Spider-Man 2 runs locked at 60fps, has a higher base resolution, better upscaling, more and better RT. Such a vast difference. Even ghosts of Tshushima runs at essentially locked 60fps at 1800p resolution.
Spiderman also cost so much money to make that sony issued a mandate afterwards capping all productions at $300 million moving forward lol - what they achieved isn’t sustainable
@@itsalwaysdarkestbeforethes1198 I agree with that. That’s why I gave the context of team ninja being AA and game output is also much higher and cheaper. Just find it crazy how much the difference can be on the same hardware. It’s essentially just about dev time, talent and optimization. But obviously that comes with a cost. And I don’t disagree with team ninja’s financial and dev choices
Ghost of Tsushima uses checkerboarding to reach 4k on PS5, but even so the pixel count of checkerboard 4k is twice the amount of pixels of 1080p and looks way cleaner than upscaling 1080p to 4k with FSR. Seems like an open world game was too ambitious for Team Ninja’s engine
@@itsalwaysdarkestbeforethes1198 most of that budget was paying for licensing costs though. Marvel is bleeding Sony dry in that regard.
The few dudes at insomniac working on engine and graphics are wizards, they shouldn't be considered the norm. However, TN's engine is just much worse than it should be.
Performance mode seems fine. I’m sure they’ll patch it up a little more in the coming months to smooth it out more. I feel like the game is selling well enough.
Dev should definitely lock to 40fps in Graphics and RT modes (assuming the detected display can handle it, otherwise stay as is) and fix the frame pacing in all modes.
Totally disagree if you mean that you can unlock the frame rate. I would much rather meet high frame rates and have it drop occasionally, than be fixed to a lower one. Even now the game in graphics mode unlocked is at 45-52 fps, why would I want it to be at 40 because of the occasional drop?
@@NatetheGr891 Consistency makes for a good experience as well. I would appreciate the option of having both.
@@NatetheGr891 I wasn't clear enough. Added more context to my post.

That looks miles better than dragons dogma 2 interior lighting, the hate on this game is ridiculous
Or when he says “bustling town centres” 😂
They all look like ghost towns
The entire game looks to have flat, unimpressive lighting so I'm really confused where that performance impact is coming from.
Love DF, but theyve really been stretching the positive sayings I'm reference to some things in this video and Dragons Dogma 2
At this point, dev should add 40fps mode for those having 120hz monitor/tv as a sweet spot between 30fps and 60fps, especially if the gsme cannot sustain 60fps all the time,..i play RnC Rift Apart and playing most games on Steam Deck by setting up 40hz / 40fps and its amazing

Nah, I'd rather take 50-60fps in the performance mode on a VRR display. Give me them frames.
I love the look of the snowy areas. But from what I've read, there isn't an open world region that has snow?
That is incorrect. Matter of fact in "act 4" snow will come and go and it accumulates on the ground and melt away when the sun comes out. Its not perfect but its probably the best snow in any game I've ever played since you can be walking around and the sky goes from sunny to grey sky to snowing to snow forming on the ground, roofs, your clothes, etc.... Pretty cool....
5:20 RoR: Asset popin quite visible
Dragons Dogma II: hold my beer.
I'd honestly prefer pop in over CPU stutter in npc crowded cities
Thx for this. Appreciate the effort in making this video.
I feel a 40 fps mode in a 120 fps container would be a good fit for this game.
Do you think the devs did not consider it? The close pop ins indicate the PS5 CPU is not good enough like Dragons dogma II. In other words very bad and old engine or lazy devs.
@@ivofixzone6410 No it's just an engine limitation, we saw the pop in issues in team ninja's previous games as well, it's just more noticeable in an open world game.

DF -- I'm glad yall continue to be honest and direct in evaluations.
This game absolutely does look like a PS4 game around half the time.
It seems like a trend with Team Ninja where they are always going to steps forward and one step back when it comes to graphics: the lackluster HDR implementation of Stranger of Paradise, the 30 fps cap on cutscenes (even on PC) and the uneven frame pacing found in Wu Long and now here. The strange implementation of Ray Tracing , the 4x Anisotropic filtering, FSR2 looking extremely blurry... These peoeple are more than capable of delivering better, so what's stopping them from doing so?
You don't get it haven't you noticed most japanese games are not that great graphicaly. Western made games have better graphics and engine its know facts these days.
@@Falcos01Japanese software development in generql is a decade or 2 behind.
The combat and game system is what got me hooked. The graphics are good enough, if they get it to work in stable 40fps woulde be nice
Combat alone had me hooked. Everything else is a bonus.
That horse running like it‘s holding a shit still kills me 😂
Absolutly hilarious
Does this game allow higher framerates with the 120hz mode?
Why is pop in still an issue with the speed of the PS5 SSD
Its nice that they were inclusive and gave an all abilities horse time to shine. 😂 Joking aside, if they can improve performance mode to a more even 60fps then I will buy it. The only mode I ever is use is performance this gen. For me games are 60fps or I don't buy them.
Same for me. 60fps minimum is a must for me unless it's on a handheld.

@@johnwoesthoff2259It can have abysmal horse animations and still be a good game.
it doesn't look that out of place as the animations in this game are not entirely realistic
At this point, AMD or the console manufacturers should really consider limiting some upscaled resolutions to some specific base resolution? Want to upscale to 4k from below 1080p ? No dice. Consumers should not be treated as beta testers.
But wasn't everyone saying that it was the Xbox Series S holding back development? 🤔
The Series S couldn't run this tho. Series X and PS5 are the only the only ones who can attempt to run it
@@Fusion05 this game was developed only for the PS5. What's your source that the series s couldn't run this? It'll run GTAVI but can't run this, are you for real?
definitely someone that couldn't afford the Series X. Keep coping. If the PS5 gets downscaled to 900p, Series S would be like 400p. I mean, if that's what you're into, you do you.
At this point it's all because of the developers, the PS5 is clearly powerful enough to do 60 fps, but these people have no idea how to optimize or limit themselves.
If the PS5 can run Horizon 2 in 60FPS without sacrificing too much quality, then yes the PS5 is clearly powerful enough to run Rise of the Ronin
These developers haven't got the talent to optimise. That's clear now.
it can do 60 but its no way near as powerful as people think. Its a gimped 3700 which is showing its age on PC ( its also like what? 5 years old already? ) and a 2070 super to 2080 super depending on game... All of which are old and showing their age. I see some say 6700xt as well so its a toss up between wtf GPU is close in FPS.
@@lilpain1997 people seem to forget that this is a 500$ console.

Why would you rver have fps cap enabled ? Genuinely asking here
Shadows in Graphics mode, especially foliage shadows look so bad that given a choice between how they look and just turning them off, I would choose the latter without hesitation. It is SO frustrating how often, in 2024 we are still seeing terrible looking shadows!
It’s not really exactly like Sekiro tho. I was playing that game to get ready for this one. I would say it’s even slightly different than Wo Long.
There is actually a small window of time you have to deflect BEFORE the attack actually hits you. In Sekiro you deflect AS the attack hits you. It really does feel different in action too. Took some getting used to.
As far as the back and forth goes it is slightly different as well. It definitely has very similar rhythms and timing, but the way depleted health increases stagger in Sekiro is one major difference.
I haven’t tried Nioh yet but sorely need to. Deflecting is a big part of RotR, but it also has a “Blade Flash” technique that allows you to regain stamina after a swing by cleaning the blood off your sword. (Really cool in action). It’s more about just pressing your enemy and using combat styles that counter theirs, while deflecting when needed.
The amount of combat styles and weapon types in this game can seem overwhelming at 1st but once you get into it, it’s AWESOME. You are encouraged to switch to weapons and styles on the fly, depending on your opponent’s weapon and style. After a little practice it becomes fairly intuitive and the controls can be pretty seamless. (Which to me is paramount in a game like this)
TLDR; this game is its own thing and somewhat unlike Sekiro or Wo Long. While the open world wasn’t the “best” in execution, I found the story and its historical context to be very intriguing. Then you add SICK combat and an overall GENUINE atmosphere, and Rise of the Ronin is one of the best samurai/ninja titles I’ve had the pleasure of playing 😊 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think this sold me on it.
This game should have purely focused on it's combat, the open world is mostly boring fluff slop that is obviously tanking the performance on team ninja's engine.
dont compare Sekiro with this crap
I wish they'd make a pure Shinobi Ninja game one day, and not Samurai.
OK, now this guy GETS IT. 😎
Very well said.
for the life of me i don't understand why still games use any lower than 16x Anisotropic filtering even in ps5/series x games, is still that much of a performance hog on consoles? in PC is barely a concern. Imo it makes games specially on 4K screens look noticeably worse.
i love the art design but the technical limitations are quite obvious, very reminiscent of from software titles in that regard.
in the end, yeah some of the drawbacks like the unsteady fps, frame time problems and generally low res. are a bummer but i think the overall look can come up for the issues.
though i still hope the performance problems get fixed eventually.
That final difficulty is awesome!!
Honestly this may not be perfect in terms of performance but I feel it’s better than Dragons Dogma 2 which is wild unstable frame rate on consoles, though honestly I was expecting better from Rise of the Ronin

GTA6 is inevitably coming to PC eventually too, just not immediately, because not the whole world revolves around you and the PC audience. Taking extra time to actually optimize the PC releases is a good thing if anything, instead of rushing it out the door when it's not ready and takes extra work than the console versions. PC gamers always want to have their cake and eat it too, and then review bomb the Steam page for some arbitrary reason anyway. Hard to believe this is the same Team Ninja that made the first 2 Ninja Gaiden games. I can't imagine this having the same team members as back in those days.
This is a Japanese company, people rarely move onto another employer over there. I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of the Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 reboots were still there.
Actually, labor laws are pretty strong in Japan, meaning if a company doesn't go under nobody's getting fired. Remember how Satoru Iwata had to sacrifice his salary because the Wii U underperformed? That was not his choice, Japanese law required this action to be taken.
i dont understand how low anisotropic filtering settings are still a thing on console, when the difference on pc between off and 16x is like 1 frame per second even on a toaster
Hoping for an inevitable PC version at some point in the future, will wait a year or two for that...
No surprise that the best mode for a Team Ninja game will be the 60fps Performance mode. They just need to work on pairing their graphics department to higher standards, and they'll be top-tier studio. This game really does look last gen, especially if you compare it to a stellar Assassin's Creed Unity which released in 2014 (10 years ago).
Yea but better graphics means longer development times and cost. I don't think they want or was made to be a top tier studio.
I think they should focus more on optimizing the graphics they are making.
VRR is a must this generation... Rip to everyone with a fixed panel when the game stumble around 55-60fps
Nice that at least the frame lock is optional even for the graphics mode. It may not work great now on PS5, but it may one day.
All games should do it this way, even if unlocked is currently near completely unplayable.
i'm starting to think part of the reason we aren't getting truly impressive current gen games (apart from how long dev cycles are) is because a lot of studios don't seem to be able to develop/optimize their games well enough at the current level. let alone being able to aim higher
I can say that pop-in on my PS5 was actually minimal. So much so that when he showed it on here I hadn’t really seen anything like that yet. I got the game on release as well.
As far as the graphics go, I agree it is no Ghost of Tsushima. But it has a feel and beauty of its one once you allow yourself to be immersed into the story, characters, timeline and world.
I usually play games with Graphics preferred because I LOVE how good the PS5 can look sometimes. That being said this game gives a sort of “film quality” when enhancing the image, but I actually didn’t like it. When I switched to Performance the entire game looked and played a lot smoother.
….TLDR; FOR ANYONE ON THE FENCE ABOUT THIS GAME I SAY DONT LET THE GRAPHICS DETER YOU. It really has been a fun game that I have played consistently since it came out. I can’t remember the last time I played a game as long of sessions as I have this one 😊👍👍. 4 out of 5 stars
I remember a few weeks before this game the discourse was about how every game doesn’t need massive triple A budgets
Times sure change quickly
People were saying games didn't need AAA budgets AND 70 price tags. This game only got half of that right
It's almost as if people are impossible to please, and are often contradictory. Especially gamers.
Ignoring OP's strawman's comment on what the issues with this release actually are...
Considering every Team Ninja game is incredibly deritivative of already existing games (not influenced by, theyre way too similar) and always have issues with optimizing their titles, yet they still charge $70, yeah I think people have a right to be annoyed. Is it the worst thing in the world? No. But people are allowed to complain
The game's been in development for 9+ years so ya I think people wanted a bit more.
@@TheSparkynutsThere was not any talk about price tags that I saw. I think that’s just an excuse for not wanting to seem hypocritical

Called it since announcement. Rise and DD2 were bound to be those types of ambitious mid-generational titles that would require a mid-generational console upgrade to really shine. Now that it appears as though the PS5 Pro is going to release as early as this holiday season or beginning of 2025, it all falls into place. That's also one of the reasons I believe Ubisoft scheduled the release of AC Codename Red for around February or March of 2025. They want it to be well optimized for the PS5 Pro at launch the way HZD and AC Origins were for PS4 Pro and XB1X. For their time, mind you. Back then, checkerboard rendering and dynamic resolution were state of the art technologies and it was considered a breakthrough for consoles to deliver a locked 30 fps with checkerboard or Dynamic 4K.
16x anisotropic filtering doesn't cost more than 1% performance these days. It's baffling that game devs still leave it at 4x.
It costs a lot of memory bandwidth, something an APU does not have an abundance of due to the shared memory.
on pc it doesn't bc it's running on rams, but on consoles it's costly since consoles don't have rams only GDDR shared with cpu.
@@MLWJ1993 You sure you're not mistaking this with MSAA?
@@ramymimouni6639 Anisotropic filtering happening in CPU visible RAM outside of the GPU on PC? What the?!
It doesn't cost much when you're not bandwith constrained. Usually on PC you aren't since GPU VRAM and System RAM don't share bandwith. On console bandwith is much scarcer. That's why it is pretty much the norm that console games have bad anisotropic filtering even today. It's kinda like textures not having performance impact unless you're out of VRAM.

We're at least one console generation away from RT being viable. I don't know why they even bother to include it, the added visuals don't nearly overcome the framerate drops that it brings.
Game is artistically pleasing. It looks a bit flat for sure but the combat and traversal mechanics makes it interesting for me. Unfortunately i can't play it.
Why can't you play it
@@Satsui_No_HadoProbably no PS5. I wish TN stopped with the stupid exclusives that prevent PC players from buying them lol. Having to wait on Sony and then Epic games 😴
I will buy it maybe on PC. Want to play full details + max graphics/fps settings.
Sakai (GoT): come out and fight, you can use all the power of the PS5. 😅
I hope they really work for some optimizing and hitch reduction. I know that it's significantly easier said then done but any improvements would be nice. I was really looking forwards to this game but this is kinda disappointing.
Hopefully a decent PC-Release will follow eventually ..
Sadly I wouldn't expect it, Wo Long is still a mess I believe :(
@@popcornadvisor3193It worked fine for me on steam. I don't have the best specs and I play on a laptop but still played at 60fps lol
@@popcornadvisor3193Nah. They patched up Wo Long and pretty much fixed it.
Also added 3 DLC's, 3 new weapons, and some new/tweaked gameplay and combat mechanics.
But I'd still suggest getting it on sale if possible.
For me, I bought it a while after release for $47 off CDkeys, and I don't regret it at all.
Its going to be ok if you use controller prob. With mouse and keyboard its going to suck as per Wo Long. Meaning even the minimum level effort for a pc port of a third person action game wont be met.
@@popcornadvisor3193 They patched out the incompatibility with e-cores, which essentially fixed all performance issues. locked 60 4k max for me, never dips when it was pretty much unplayable before.
There is no excuse when Ghost of Tsushima looks way better, runs at a flawless 60 FPS and a solid render resolution. This is not due to hardware limitations, just developers being lazy.
This will eventually come to PC right?
Occasional lurches? Mine has a consistently sub-60 fps. Rarely hits 60 and VRR doesn’t help
Another technical review with absolutely no mention of the sound in the game.
I'll get this game when I get PS5 Pro. Hopefully it'll get somewhat better by then. I don't currently have PS5 to play with anyway lol
It’s not gonna make it any better lmao
0:18 what game is this?
Its real DNA is Nioh, not Wo Long. I can clearly see some animations similar to Nioh1/2.
Ghost of Tsushima has superb graphics at a locked 60 on PS5 but it has terrible input lag. Nioh2 in that regard is very responsive. It would have been nice if Tom shared some tests on input lag.
It’s actually more of a melding of Nioh and Wo Long. Not one or the other. It uses multiple styles/stances like Nioh, but the core combat loop is heavily HEAVILY centered around parries, which is what Wo Long was ALL about.
Is it input lag or does the game just feel heavier and slower?
@@PSspecialist Right? theres no input lag on GoT
RIP Mathew Perry btw. Wasn't he a gamer?
Not sure personally.
Yeah. He was a huge Fallout fan and went so far as to pursue a voice acting role in New Vegas. He was Benny.
Is this ps5 exclusive or just console.exclusive? I wanted this on my PC.
The performance mode should be way better for those of us who have a 120hz tv/monitor. Hopefully they can improve the performance.
Plat done, enjoyed every minute.
Imagine the free time
Damn!!!!!!!!!
now go outside
55 hours not a big deal lmao@@islandboy9381
Now touch grass 😁
I feel like 900-1080p at 45-60fps with RT on is not actually so bad especially for an open world title
The graphics mode being 1152-1512p at 30fps seems low, I would have expected 1800-2160p at 30fps
Yeah the resolution is pretty low for a 30fps mode. Horizon runs at native 4k.
I've only played a few hours so far, but I'm enjoying it. After playing nothing but my Steam Deck for a couple of months, the visuals look fine to me. 😂
That's saturn daytona levels of pop in
That horse animation 💀💀💀
😂😂
@Kagehisa_ChanI'm pretty sure they motion captured a rocking horse
Not gonna lie, seems somehow superior to DD2 on a graphical level and massively superior to performance. Far from perfect, but we are in "acceptable level". (Of course, the acceptable is only because the whole game is good.)
This is the perfect game to play once PS5 Pro comes out, Graphics mode should run at 60 on that system... Sub 1080p and not even stable 60 is inexcusable for an exclusive title.
40fps modes should be a standard by now.
Console scrubs tripping over each other for a low graphics, dynamic '4K' (1440p), 'smooth' 30 FPS experience on their 8K capable consoles.
@@DBTHEPLUGyou’re still stuck on the whole console vs PC debate? grow up man, that’s so 2015
@@jawknee4088 I remember that debate in the 90s. It was pathetic even then 🤣
For me personally always frame rate over fidelity.
In my humble opinion a smooth frame rate makes the game look better and play better.
To bad Dragon's Dogma 2 got the same fate and even worse 😞
Thanks for the coverage Tom 👍🏼
I loved the stable framtimes in FFVII Rebirth, feels SO GOOD compared to other AAA games, even if the textures suck absolute ass
I agree
Console scrubs tripping over each other for a low graphics, dynamic '4K' (1440p), 'smooth' 30 FPS experience on their 8K capable consoles.
'I'm playing at 4K 120 FPS', said the console scrub calmly while hovering between 90-110 FPS and running the game at a dynamic 4K resolution, averaging out at around a 1080p internal resolution.
@@DBTHEPLUG I have a PC too and PC gaming fucking sucks ass these days
This game has been a lovely treat between the awesomeness of FFVII Rebirth and the upcoming Stellar Blade and FFXVI: The Rising Tide.
What a year!
